Pharmacology is the study of drugs and their actions on living organisms. It involves three phases - the pharmaceutic phase where drugs become solutions, the pharmacokinetic phase involving absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs in the body, and the pharmacodynamic phase where drugs produce physiological responses. Drugs act on the nervous, cardiovascular and other body systems. The autonomic nervous system consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions which generally function antagonistically. Cholinergic drugs mimic acetylcholine while anticholinergic drugs block its effects. Adrenergic drugs mimic norepinephrine.
