A shortened form of a word or phrase
- N.Y. for New York, Mr. for Mister, or ctn for carton.
There are millions of common abbreviations used every day.
When you write the date and month ;
(Mon, Tues., Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat., and Sun.)
(Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.).
Tons of industry specific abbreviations that you may be unaware
of unless you are in the industry, such as medical
abbreviations or dental abbreviations.

Animation/ Visual Effects
1) Animation: A medium that creates the illusions of movement
through the projection of a series of still images or
frames.
2) Archetype: An original model or type after which other similar
things are patterned
3) Blocking: An animation technique in which key poses are created
to establish timing and placement of characters and props in a given scene or
shot
4) Codec: Software that compresses and decompresses a digital
video signal
5) Compositing: The process of combining multiple visual elements into
a single image. This is often performed in films to make a live actor appear on
a computer-generated background, or vice versa.
6) Pipeline: Structured process flow, listing out all the function
involved and how they interact with each other.

7) Render: To generate actual viewable images from a 3D model or scene
8) Staging: The presentation of an idea so that it is clear. This idea
can be an action, a personality, an expression, or a mood. The key idea is
that the idea is made clear to the viewer.
9) Story line: The plot of a book or play or film
10) Storyboard: A series of small consecutive drawings plotting key
movements in an animation narrative, and accompanied
by caption-like descriptions of the action and sound.
11) Storyreel / Animatics: A filmed, taped or computer-animated version of the
storyboard that runs the same length as the finished animation.
12) Thumbnail Sketches: Art directors and graphic designers use the term to
describe a small drawing on paper (usually part of a group) used to explore
multiple ideas quickly
13) Visual effects (VFX): Various processes by which imagery is created and/or
manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot

6. ACRONYM
Must spell out another word. However, this rule isn't always
rigidly enforced;
ASAP is an acronym although the word "asap" is not in many
dictionaries.
- the first letters of each of the words "As Soon As Possible" are used to form the
acronym ASAP.
NY is the acronym for New York.
Since this acronym is a shortened version of the phrase, by
definition the acronym is also an abbreviation.

Acronyms are used daily, and most people can interpret the
meaning of common acroynms without much thought. For
example:
ATM (automatic teller machine)
BRB (be right back)
LOL (laughing out loud)
ROFL (rolling on floor laughing) when texting.
Abbreviations and acronyms are shortened versions of words
and phrases to speed up our communication, a misuse can lead
to a big miscommunication.

8. ELLIPSIS
Three dots used to show that words have been omitted from a
quotation or to create a pause for effect.
An ellipsis can be used:
i) To show an omission of a word or words (including whole sentences) from a
text.
ii) To create a pause for effect.
iii) To show an unfinished thought.
iv)To show a trail off into silence.

Examples;
i) The brochure states: "The atmosphere is tranquil ... and you cannot hear the trains."
(omitted text)
ii) A credit card stolen in London was used to pay for a Chinese meal five hours
later ...
in Bangkok.
(pause for effect)
iii) "Yeah? Well, you can just…."
(unfinished thought)
iv) Standing tall and with the Lord's Prayer mumbling across our lips, we entered the
chamber…."
(trail off into silence)
When an ellipsis ends a sentence, four dots are used (three for the ellipsis and one for
the period / full stop.

Using Square Parentheses (Square Brackets) with Ellipsis
- when using an ellipsis to show that words are missing from a quotation, it is a
common practice to put square parentheses ; [ ]
- to differentiate it from an ellipsis which appeared in the original text or to make it
clear it's not a pause for effect.
For example:
He would eat [...] jam, ham, spam, lamb, and cram...berries by the tram load
