Editor's Notes
Why do computers annoy so many? When does IT get the call?
Scientists for the RAND Corporation have created this model to illustrate how a “home computer” could look like in the year 2004. However the needed technology will not be economically feasible for the averae home. Also the scientists readily admit that the computer will require not yet invented technology to actually work…With teletype interface and the Fortran language, the computer will be easy to use…
What we’re good at is delivering bits - most of the time.
Harder is getting the desired information to the right place at the right time.
Leaders, be they corporate, government, or in the non-profit sector, seek the best information available. The problem is that the supply is, in many ways, outstripping demand. There’s lots of information, too much perhaps, but we must sift through it to make better decisions. We are considered by some in economics to be rational maximizers, seeking the best information upon which to base decisions regarding the use of resources.
Networks are a new organizational form, not just in IT, but in society as a whole. In this form, need to know is replaced by a bias toward horizontal sharing.
Data > Information > Knowledge > Wisdom Wiring the world was fairly easy…getting the right content where it is needed, when it is needed. That is harder.
NOTE: Meher Baba, guru to Pete Townsend. What is our vision of IT Nirvana? Is it reliable hardware and software? Is it outsourced operations? Is it input in the strategic direction of the company? Argument - the best run companies and organizations will figure out how to learn from the flows of digital information within them and see operations in a more holistic manner.
This is the key challenge for software engineering and IT for the next decade or more. Comp301 Script Anecdote The new questions for computing are how algorithms can be written not just to optimize processing efficiency or data transmission latency, but rather to understand biological and social phenomena like traffic, conflict or cancer. Recommend reading the NY Times piece on Olin College in Massachusetts. Computer science must become more of a social science. Algorithms should not

An inspired Edison. The corporate sector (and everyone else) seems to recognize that innovation is important, but few organizations actually know how to do it. IBM does…they have research labs. 3M does…they budget thinking time into their work schedule. Everybody else is a mixed bag, and often enough we rely on the little guys to have good ideas and then the big guys buy them out.
Great ideas aren’t always hatched in isolation. Rice has existed largely behind the hedge, a monastery of knowledge in which individuals think individually. That has changed. Now thinking must extend beyond the hedge, with collaboration between disparate and seemingly unrelated groups producing new ideas. Tell story of Derek and bioinformatics.
