The Course
Prelim:
Create a radio show based on the 2014 film Pride.
Coursework:
Create a documentary on a subject of your own choice.
A2 So Far…
Pride
Analyzing Representation
Mediation
GarageBand
Pride
 So far this year we have watched and studied the 2014 film pride, which
was based on the true story of the gay activists in the UK who worked to
help miners during their lengthy strike of the National Union of
Mineworkers in the summer of 1984
 We studied the film because of its various representations, the main one
that we focused on being the representation of the working class
 Although the film Is based on a true story we have to take into account
that some of the representations were not true representations, as the
director was from London and therefore had a different representation of
the working class
 Working class is represented in a positive way in the film, this is contrary to
the modern day media in which the working class are seen as lazy.
Representation
When analyzing representation some questions you would ask are:
 Who or what is being represented?
 How is the representation being created?
 Who has created the representation?
 Why is the representation created in that way? What is the
intention?
 What is the effect of this representation
Representations are re-presentations. The media re-presents
people, ideas and events. Everything we see in the media is in
some way a second hand version of the actual thing, what we do
see in the media is clearly not the thing itself. These kind of
representations are made by the use of media language. This links
in with mediation.
Mediation
Mediation is the process that media text goes through to get to
the audience. Mediation is when you change something in the
media to give it the representation of the “Real thing”. An
example of mediation is the picture at the bottom, in real life
they are all models who probably don’t know each other, but
because, through mediation, the are made to all smile and
touch, it gives the representation of a happy family.
GarageBand
 We have learnt how to put an audio file onto GarageBand
 We have learnt how to cut parts of that audio out or shorten
different parts of it
 We've also learnt how to loop an audio file
 We have learnt how to add music to GarageBand and also control
the sound levels of that music, by learning how to change sound
levels we were also able to fade music in and out using the same
techniques.
 We have also learnt how to export what we have made as an
audio file.
