1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. This is the second part of the first shot within my music video
and it shows the artist lip syncing the first line of the song. I
thought this was key in order to follow the codes and
conventions of real media products as for indie artists and
especially within the first music videos the artists’ make the
first shot will usually be one that includes there face and them
lip syncing this is a way for the audience to instantly know
who said artist is and recognise them throughout the video to
elevate and doubt that it could be an actor in the artists place.
I took inspiration from this shot from artists such as coldplay
and specifically the video to ‘Fix you’ where lead singer Chris
Martin is seen from the beginning of the song lip singing.
1.
3. 2. This is the second shot I have chosen from
my music video. It is a scene taken from the
chorus and shows the artist lip syncing and
during this scene he is walking along the
path seen in this screen shot. This is another
shot I took inspiration from a Coldplay video
for. In this case it was from the video yellow
that shows artist Chris Martin walking and lip
syncing throughout the entire video. This is a
way in which I have followed codes and
conventions as I have taken this aspect used
in many Coldplay videos but only used it for
the chorus in my music video. I wanted to
take this aspect because I felt it would lend
its self to the lyrics of the song.
4. 3.
This is the third shot I have chosen to take from my music
video and it shows the artist using physical action to explain
their internal emotion. This is something very prevalent in
indie genre music videos as the lyrics can tend to be about
things such as a break up, love or their feelings towards
another person this is clear again in many Coldplay songs as
well as songs by artists such as the 1975. As my music video
is the part of the amplification category in Goodwin's theory
which is the case for many indie music videos I wanted there
to be aspects of what is seen that derives directly from the
lyrics and some that doesn’t. this is one of the case where the
action derives directly from the lyrics as at the time they are
‘cause I just can’t stop this pendulum in my head’ and what
can be seen is the artist with his hands on his head. This fits
the codes and conventions of real media products as physical
action to show internal emotion is something very prevalent.
5. 4.
This is the fourth shot I have chosen from my music video. In
two separate moments throughout the video there are
moments that are filmed very candidly that show the artist just
walking and looking as if they're not being filmed. These are in
many ways flashbacks to when the artist felt happy with the
protagonist of the song however I chose to use the same outfit
as some as the sadder shots. This is very unconventional as
normally any scene that shows a memory will be shown with
different costuming. I chose to do this in this style because I
wanted to show that there have not only been bad times in
this location but good and felt that the shots of the artist
looking back and smiling at the person filming shows that that
person could have been the person the song is written about.
However this is very unusual and a way in which I wanted to
bend the codes and conventions but this does take away from
the image that real media products present.
6. 5.
This is the fifth shot I have chosen to take from my music
video. It is most likely the most creative scene within the
music video and shows someone looking up into the trees
and spinning round during the part of the song where the
only thing said is ‘ohh’ and ‘noo’ over and over again. This
is a way in which I chose to follow the amplification
category as this scene does not derive directly from the
lyrics. This scene does fit the codes and conventions of
indie music videos as there are often scene in which there
is confusion in the lyrics which is the case here.
7. 6.
This is a scene taken from the last chorus within the song and
is totally different from the previous scenes depicting the
chorus. As a lot of the time the last chorus is slightly different
to the chorus’ within the song whether that just be some
extended notes or a change in lyrics. This however will
normally not change the total style of the scene within the
chorus. This is a way in which I have taken away from the
codes and conventions.
8. 8.
This is another scene in which the lyrics are just
‘oh’ and ‘no’ and I chose to use the same image
of the spinning trees however this time in order
to reiterate the confusion. However in this shot I
chose to use the cutaway tool and have a
repeated image where the physical actions
represent the internal emotions. This does fit
codes and conventions as the same image will
often be shown but in a slightly different way.
9. 9.
This is the final scene within the music video and is a
way in which I have gone away from the codes and
conventions as usually in the indie genre the final scene
will include a shot of the artist. However I chose to use a
shot of final lyrics of the chorus burning which are
repeated at the end of the song ‘either your head or
your heart you set the other on fire’ this shot of the
burning paper with the lyrics written on It derives
directly from the lyrics of the song but again does not
fit codes and conventions as usually there is a final shot
of the artist at the end of the video.
