1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
texts?
Branding
2. Logo
One of the most important factors of branding is the logo. Throughout the process of making the music video i
had to do some independent research on the band’s song that we used in me, and my groups music video.
From my research of the band i have found that the logo is quite simple yet it is easy to remember so it is
effective for marketing.
For designing my own logo i decided to take Bastille’s into consideration which i thought the use of a triangle
was quite interesting and fascinating to look at. My view of the symbolism of the triangle is that it would
represent the artist as a strong character. The theme of the music video is relationships and my view on the
shape represents the theme which a triangle is that type of shape that is pretending to be a square and is
missing a side that it’s missing . I used the symbolism of a triangle and taken it into my work to represent the
type of artist i was creating; someone that needed that special person that can make them complete.
3. Linking back to task 21 (storyboards), i have taken that into consideration for when i was creating my logo
because the narrative me, and my group created using a storyboard had our male artist and actor in the music
video to express himself as a bit lonely and depressed. The use of hands in prayer was contributed to this
because the character in the narrative realises that his partner isn’t coming back to him so he decides to sing
about his sorrows which gives the audience a sense that he is pleading or almost praying for her to take him
back.
For creating my logo i have taken these to elements into the branding of my artist. The colours that are
involved in the lighting are low key because of the genre of the song. The genre is Indie/Pop so a stereotypical
narrative was going to be a relationship however, the Indie part gave it a dark effect which the syntactic
elements of the music video made me think of the type of colours to go into the logo. I chose to use black and
white for the hands in prayer in my logo because it represented the relationship in the narrative as the good
times and bad times of their relationship which i have taken this idea from Strauss’s binary opposites. I have
chosen to use the colour purple for the colour of the triangle. I used this colour as representation of the our
artists personality. The colour purple represented the artist as a person who is sad and frustrated.
4. Poster
Linking back to task 5 (Branding research), i have researched pictures of Indie/Pop artists and different music
videos for facial expressions and poses in posters and advertisement. This was useful in creating my poster
because i was able make my artist to make a facial expression that will show how the artist feels. The
typography i used was quite bold and had a interesting design to which was key for my poster because it had
to be a stand out element for marketing which using the face of the artist is important however, the artists
name and song is just as important to the branding of the artist.
Linking back to task 5, the impact of social media was
also a key factor in a rise for the popularity of an artist.
For my poster i decided to include the top 3 biggest
platforms of social media as it is a branding technique
that almost every artist uses.
Linking to task 24 (Photoshoot) I was able to use an image
of our artist for my poster which the use of facial
expressions allowed me to express the artists emotions to
the audience making them appealed to the poster
because they want to know why he is pulling a shocked
facial expression
5. Digipak
From starting off with task 3 (Music video research analysis of digipaks) and task 4 (analysis of digipak adverts),
i was able to use my research and take it into my own by using different codes and conventions. I have taken
inspiration from artists such as Rihanna, Olly Murs and Jay Z as their digipaks have a variety of elements that
make their digipak’s successful. Jay Z is a good example of what make a successful digipak which the use of
typography and low key lighting stands out. I have used micro-elements of mise en scene for my own creation
of a digipak which a big and bold fonts will make it easier to read for the target audience. Researching and
analysing websites also had an impact on the branding of my artist which different layout’s and mico-
elements of mise en scene gave me key points on how to make my own product successful.
Linking to task 22 (Ancillary task I was able to
use to create the layout and use different
tools as it helped me to create quite a unique
looking digipak. Different tools such as filter
and layout allowed me to get the best out of
my digipak
