Introduction
For over fifty years, computing technology has been a part of business. Organizations have spent trillions
of dollars on information technologies. But has all this investment in IT made a difference? Have we seen
increases in productivity? Are companies that invest in IT more competitive? In this chapter, we will look
at the value IT can bring to an organization and try to answer these questions. We will begin by highlighting
two important works from the past two decades.
The Productivity Paradox
In 1991, Erik Brynjolfsson wrote an article, published in the Communications of the ACM, entitled “The
Productivity Paradox of Information Technology: Review and Assessment.” By reviewing studies about the
impact of IT investment on productivity, Brynjolfsson was able to conclude that the addition of information
technology to business had not improved productivity at all – the “productivity paradox.” From the article1
He does not draw any specific conclusions from this finding, and provides the following analysis:
Although it is too early to conclude that IT’s productivity contribution has been subpar, a paradox
remains in our inability to unequivocally document any contribution after so much effort. The
various explanations that have been proposed can be grouped into four categories:
1) Mismeasurement of outputs and inputs,
2) Lags due to learning and adjustment,
3) Redistribution and dissipation of profits,
4) Mismanagement of information and technology.

How are IT infrastructure and emerging technologies important to organizations? In the last unit, we
talked about the role that information technology (IT) plays in organizations and business strategy. In this unit,
we will discuss a natural continuation of that topic with a focus on emerging technologies and communication
technologies such as wireless technology, the Internet, and telecommunications.
What is IT infrastructure? If you remember from the textbook reading in Chapter 1, our IT infrastructure
includes the shared technology resources that provide the platform supporting our information systems
applications. IT infrastructure includes everything technical that supports the business. It supports both the
business and IT strategies.
Think of it this way: If our strategy is to offer our customer a specific service such as electronic invoicing
(EDI), how can we do that without the infrastructure in place to carry out that goal? The IT infrastructure in this
case is the EDI software, the hardware (a server, database, and the Internet), the personnel, educational
services, management services, and so on.
How has the IT infrastructure evolved over time? Most of us have a sense of the scope’s answer to this
question. It is enormous! Just look at computers—the first ones were huge. Businesses used mainframes the
size of trucks, and now servers are the size of a desktop.
Simple applications of the past have now become suites, or bundles of applications that can work together.
Now, there are enterprise-level applications that help improve an organization’s productivity and efficiency via
a collection of programs with common business applications. They are designed to be customizable to solve
enterprise-wide problems rather than personal or departmental problems.
In addition, there are newly emerging enterprise-level tools such as enterprise database management
software. Again, this concept of enterprise level takes the already existing tools to a different level to answer
the need for more storage and enterprise-wide sharing.
Years ago, dialing into the Internet meant using a slow modem. Now, businesses can use fiber-optic and

Evaluation – After the model is created, it is evaluated by a team of experts to check whether it satisfies business objectives or not.
Deployment – After evaluation, the model is deployed and further plans are made for its maintenance. A properly organized report is prepared with the summary of the work done.

Information technology surrounds you-on your campus and in local businesses.
When you order merchandise over the telephone, chances are your sales represen
tative is using an information system to check inventory and to trigger the ship
ment of your goods. Increasingly you will order products using the Internet, dis
pensing with the telephone and becoming a participant in electronic commerce.
When you use an automatic teller machine, make an airline reservation, or rent a
car, information technology (IT) is working for you again.
Information technology is pervasive in modem organizations-from the largest
manufacturing firms to your comer drugstore, and the stakes are high, as busi
nesses confronted with global competition strive to succeed. Some organizations
will flourish; others will fail. Those that succeed will understand how to use and
manage information technology to their advantage.
The purpose of Information Technology for Management, Seventh Edition, is to
help you learn enough about technology to play an active role in managing infor
mation technology. It is important to understand the strategic uses of IT and how

8 reasons you need a strategy for managing information..before it's too late
The document discusses 8 reasons why organizations need an information management strategy: 1) Due to information overload from a tidal wave of data, 2) Ubiquitous computing means information is everywhere, 3) Social media is prevalent and collaboration is key, 4) Unmanaged collaboration leads to disaster, 5) Simplicity is important for solutions, 6) Sustainability is increasingly important, 7) Organizations can no longer manage alone and need intelligent tools, and 8) Risks of mismanaging information are rising. Non-HR Perspective: What is the manager’s role in establishing a compensation strategy? How do managers influence the compensation process?
