Scrum is simple. It has 11 elements. 5 Events, 3 Roles and 3 Artifacts. But even though Scrum is simple, it is hard. Hard to do right. Daily scrum’s only on Tuesdays? A Sprint Demo? The team asking for approval from their Product Owner at Sprint Review… These are only a few of the ways scrum can get corrupted. Let’s scan out collective Scrum hard dive and run chkdks /f on it to get rid of some of the bad sectors, rebuild some of the indexes and resolve the lost files.

Five people at one computer? How can that possibly be productive?
While this seems like a reasonable question, it's not easily answered - until we begin to understand the power of flow.
Mob Programming grew from the quest of one team to learn how to work well together. Once we started We almost immediately noticed that working this way provided better results in a variety of ways:
We were getting more done, and they were the more important thing
The quality of our work was increasing dramatically
Our Knowledge, skills, and capabilities were improving rapidly
And all while we were having a lot of fun as well!
While we noticed these benefits and more, and it was clear this was in a large part due to working well together throughout the day - we didn't have an understanding of why this was working so wonderfully for us.
A hint came early on when we recognized we were achieving a one-piece flow - but we didn't realize the importance of this until we started exploring the meaning and power of "flow".
In this presentation, we'll share the results of that exploration, and see if we can get a better understanding of Mob Programming and the power of flow.

Green chemistry in chemical reactions: informatics by designAlex Clark
Chemical informatics technology can be of assistance to chemists for describing reactions in numerous ways, including calculating green chemistry metrics such as process mass intensity, E-factor and atom economy. To facilitate this, chemical reactions have to be described in more precise detail than is the norm for most chemists. There are also numerous practical ways to add more green chemistry functionality to lab notebooks, such as enumerating searchable reaction transforms for environmentally favourable reactions, automatically looking up toxicity and hazard information, and others which are mentioned in the slides.
This presentation was given at the Green Chemistry & Engineering conference in 2015 (Americal Chemical Society Green Chemistry Insititute).
The importance of data curation on QSAR Modeling: PHYSPROP open data as a cas...Kamel Mansouri
This presentation highlighted how data curation impacts the reliability of QSAR models. We examined key datasets related to environmental endpoints to validate across chemical structure representations (e.g., mol file and SMILES) and identifiers (chemical names and registry numbers), and approaches to standardize data into QSAR-ready formats prior to modeling procedures. This allowed us to quantify and segregate data into quality categories. This improved our ability to evaluate the resulting models that can be developed from these data slices, and to quantify to what extent efforts developing high-quality datasets have the expected pay-off in terms of predicting performance. The most accurate models that we build will be accessible via our public-facing platform and will be used for screening and prioritizing chemicals for further testing.
The Data Driven University - Automating Data Governance and Stewardship in Au...Pieter De Leenheer
Data Governance and Stewardship requires automation of business semantics management at its nucleus, in order to achieve data trust between business and IT communities in the organization. University divisions operate highly autonomously and decentralized, and are often geographically distributed. Hence, they benefit more from an collaborative and agile approach to Data Governance and Stewardship approach that adapts to its nature.
In this lecture, we start by reviewing 'C' in ICT and reflect on the dilemma: what is the most important quality of data being shared: truth or trust? We review the wide spectrum of business semantics. We visit the different phases of growing data pain as an organization expands, and we map each phase on this spectrum of semantics.
Next, we introduce our principles and framework for business semantics management to support Data Governance and Stewardship focusing on the structural (what), processual (how) and organizational (who) components. We illustrate with use cases from Stanford University, George Washington University and Public Science and Innovation Administrations.

Is Pay Hindering Your Company’s Performance?
A culture of performance is one where success patterns have taken root throughout an organization. The company is winning and you see it manifest in every part of the business. However, for too many companies, the culture is not “firing on all cylinders.” Performance is lagging. As a result, breakthrough growth remains out of reach.
Pay can either drive or inhibit the success patterns that fuel business growth. If your company’s rewards strategy is hindering more than enabling a performance culture, you will not want to miss this presenation

· What are you good at?- am very good at using good personal judgement and decision implementation. I can take a situation and make a decision for an effective alternative route.
· What do you need to improve? I need to work on not second guessing my self. This causes me to have uncertainty.
· What do you enjoy doing? I enjoy making a difference in a positive way. I like feeling involved in important decisions.
· What are some of the things that you find unpleasant? I don't like dealing with conflict. It is hard for me to make decisions that can negatively impact others.
· Give examples that support your ideas for each statement. when I worked with United healthcare's training department I discovered much about what I was good at and what I was not good at. I was tasked to make group decisions on how to improved the training material and process. I was also faced with walking trainees in not so pleasant processes such as QA.
· Identify career opportunities and threat by researching (cite them) job prospects in the industry you’re interested in. The biggest threat I found in my research would be technology.

What are you good at? Within the workplace I am good at staying on task and focused. I am good at following directions given and helping out others that are confused or overwhelmed. I have always been good at following directions which has helped me to learn so many new things about cooking in the kitchen.
What do you need to improve? I can improve on multitasking, working quickly and efficiently, and striving to move up in the workplace. I talk quite a lot and I find it hard to talk to the servers and work at the same time so i need to find the happy medium.
What do you enjoy doing? I enjoy helping others, completing tasks from start to finish, and bettering the environment around me any way possible. Every time I come into work I create a to do list and it is very satisfying being able to cross stuff off of the list.
What are some of the things that you find unpleasant? I don't like drama, a dirty workplace, liars within the workplace, and cheaters. The kitchen that I work in can get very dirty sometimes and a dirty workplace leads to messy products.
There are career opportunities as a cake decorator or assistant bakery manager at a company called Nothing Bundt Cakes. This business has been open for a while and they do wedding and party cakes. This could possibly be competition for the bakery I am looking at opening. There are also positions available at Sam's club, Walmart, and Panera. Nothing Bundt Cakes would be the most competition for the bakery.

Crowdsourcing your documentation: Managing a crowdsourced documentation projectSusan Griffin
Crowdsourcing is defined as “the act of taking a function once performed by employees and outsourcing it to an undefined (and generally large) network of people in the form of an open call” (source: "The Rise of Crowdsourcing," June 2006, Wired magazine). If you look online, you’ll find many examples of this concept at work in forums and websites designed expressly for the purpose of shared content creation: Wikipedia, IMDB (internet movie database), and reddit, just to name a few.
What I am talking about here, crowdsourcing a documentation project, is a little bit different. It is document creation that is outsourced to a group of internal users, and project managed by someone with a writing/information architecture background. I would describe this as more of a “controlled crowdsourcing” scenario, with a smaller group of contributors, and contained within a single organization. If you haven’t experienced this yet, chances are that you will, and soon. With more companies needing the writing staff they have to “work smarter and more creatively,” I would argue that this is something we all need to adapt to as professional content creators.
A firm grasp of scientific method and ability to write clearly and convincingly is a great assert to any professional in sciences.
Conducting research and publishing peer reviewed papers train professionals in both scientific method and writing. Moreover, having research papers in your resume is considered a huge plus in both industry and academia. However, conducting research and getting them published requires professionals to approach the problem and present their solutions form a unique angle. The talk will address research in general and writing research papers. Specifically, the talk will cover peer review process, what is a contribution?, and basic composition of
a research paper, describing potential pitfalls.
