2. First things first!
You will need to start by going to Twitters home page (shown in the
background) www.twitter.com
From there you have the choice to log in or sign up. If you don’t have a
previous twitter account go ahead and follow the directions to make your
account.
3. Build Your Timeline
Once you’ve chosen your username and password Twitter will take you
through several pages to help get your profile started. Search and find
friends, groups, TV shows and celebrities you want to follow.
4. Now your
home page
should look
something like
this!
Don’t worry if
you don’t find
lots of pages to
follow straight
away, you can
always add
more as you
go.
Now start
clicking!
5. Time to Explore!
Now that you have your home page set up (hopefully you already uploaded a
profile picture!) it’s time to explore and learn your way around the site.
Notice the “who to follow” section on the left, it’s a good place to find pages
to follow, hitting the refresh button helps.
There are many different pages on Twitter, from celebrities, to news
companies, to local businesses. Follow what you are interested and involved
in. If you have your own local business find companies that might be
interested in you, or that you want to support yourself
6. Confirm Your Account!
Don’t forget to confirm your account. You do this by
logging into the email account you used for Twitter, you
should find an email from twitter in your inbox, read and
follow the directions! It’s easy, just one click!
7. Time to Tweet!
Now that you have some followers and have explored the site, it’s time to
write your first tweet! You might announce your new presence on Twitter, or
share some exciting news.
For a business Twitter is a great place to share upcoming events, sales, new
items etc. For me as a dog breeding I might tweet new health clearances for
my dogs, new titles, trial results or upcoming litter announcements.
8. What the heck is that #?
Well on Twitter the pound symbol (#) is known as a hashtag , you’ll see it
included in most tweets.
The hashtag may seem complicated at first, but really it’s just a way for you to
search for tweets with a common topic. For example I like the show Reign,
so all I have to do is search #Reign and I will find a list of tweets about the
show.
If I tweeted about the show I might write something like “Love this new
series, first episode was awesome! #Reign”

9. How the @ Works
You might see some tweets around started with @, usually accompanied by a
name. You can use the @ sign to tweet to a specific person and they will be
notified of the tweet. For example, if someone wanted to ask me a question
they might type “@Fhbordercollies love your dogs, do you have any
upcoming litters?”

10. Add Your Website!
Go to the top of the page and find “Me”, then on the right side you should
find the “Edit Profile” button, click that and it gives you the choice to add
your location and website link.
Even if you only have a few followers at the start go ahead and add your
website to your page, it’s a free and easy way to help get more traffic to your
website!
11. Go get started and have fun!
As someone new to twitter myself I’ve gone through all the steps above,
hopefully this PowerPoint will help you to get started and be able to use the
site. Like me you’ll learn more as you go, and build a long list of followers
over time.
Good luck and happy twittering!
