This document proposes and evaluates a split protocol technique for migrating web servers. It allows the connection and data phases of TCP to be handled by different servers. This enables a new connection server to take over active TCP connections and pending HTTP requests from an original connection server during migration. The technique is implemented using bare PC web servers without OS or kernel support. Experimental results show migration using this split protocol approach has low latency and overhead.
