SELF-MANAGEMENT
Strategic Thinking
What do you want to accomplish with your life? To be successful, you need to be proactive, look ahead, anticipate change, and analyze opportunities. In other words, you need to plan and think strategically. This will help you to determine the potential impact of your actions on other individuals. As a result you will make better decisions.
Strategic thinking involves the gathering and use of data to make significant long-term decisions that will affect future business performance. This process requires examination of the mission, core functions and current performance of a business, the industry in which it operates, and the external environment. An important step in becoming a manager is to think strategically. For each of the following statements, circle the number which indicates your level of agreement. Rate your agreement as it is, not what you think it should be. Objectivity will enable you to determine your management skill strengths and weaknesses.

Vision is a dream what a company wishes to become or aspire or intend to be in future.
Kotler defines it as a “description of something in future.”
A vision answers the question “where we want to be”.
It gives us a reminder about “what we want to develop”.
A vision statement is for the organization & it’s members, unlike the mission statement is for the customers & clients.
Example: the vision of “Wal-Mart” is to become the worldwide leader in retailing.
Generic Electric: “We bring good things to life”.
Ranbaxy Laboratories: “to become a research based international pharmaceutical company”.
FEATURES
The vision must be clear.
It must be unambiguous.
It must harmonies with organization’s culture & values.
It should be realistic.
It should be concise to be memorised.
It incorporates a shared understanding about the nature and aim of the organization.
It prepares the foundation for mission & describes that on achieving the mission, how the organization would be placed in a particular position in future.
Mission is states that “what the company is, why it exists & the unique contribution it can make”.
The mission can be defined as the fundamental or unique purpose that makes it apart from other firms of its type.
It indicates the nature & scope of business in terms of product, market & technology.
The mission states its core ideology which can be divided into two parts: core purpose & core value.
Core purpose is the reason for which the firm exists & the firm stands on core values which it holds.
The mission can be reflected through the “mission statement”.
The Mission Statement distinguishes one business from other similar firms.
It is the statement of the role by which an organization intends to serve its stakeholders.
It describes why an organization is operating, what the organization does, who all it serves & what makes it unique.
It differentiates an organization from others by explaining its broad scope of activities, its products & technologies it uses to achieve its goals & objectives.
Example: Microsoft’s mission is to help people and business throughout the world to realize its full potential.
Wal-Mart’s mission is to give ordinary folk the chance to buy the same thing as rich people.
NTPC: To make available, reliable & quality power in increasingly large quantities.
BHEL: A world class innovative, competitive & profitable engineering enterprise providing total business solutions
Characteristics of Mission Statement
Both vision & mission statement always exist at top level of an organization and flow towards middle and lower level hierarchy.
It should be unique or distinct that every one keeps it in mind.
It should be feasible & attainable.
It should be clear enough so that actions can be taken.
It should be inspiring for the management, employees & society a large.
It should be precise & analytical.
It should be credible for all the stakeholders.
The mission statement of the firm wants to maintain its distinct image & characteristics
A vision states what the organization aspires to become in the future. A mission reflects the organization's past and present by stating why the organization exists and what role it plays in society. Goals are the more specific aims that organizations pursue to reach their visions and missions.

Difference between vision and mission statement
Vision and mission statements are the marketing tools that help an organization grow by aiming at where they are heading, and answering what the organization's culture and values are. They are the most helpful in small-scale organizations but also benefit large and medium scaled organizations. Vision statements and mission statements are always placed together but are different from one another. They both are created for different purposes. We have previously seen how a vision statement helps in looking forwards to where an organization wants to reach whereas; a mission statement clarifies what an organization wants to do now.

Financial Analysis of the Indian FMCG IndustryNavitha Pereira
Fast-moving consumer goods or Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) are products that are sold quickly and at relatively low cost. FMCG sector is the 4th largest contributor to Indian economy with a market size of more than US$ 51.4 billion in 2017. This sector will continue to see growth as it depends on an ever-increasing internal market for consumption, and demand for these goods remains more or less constant, irrespective of recession or inflation. Availability of key raw materials, cheaper labor costs and presence across the entire value chain gives Indian FMCG industry a competitive advantage. Penetration level as well as per capita consumption in most product categories like jams, toothpaste, skin care, hair wash etc. in India is low, indicating the untapped market potential. Increasing Indian population, particularly the middle class and the rural segments, presents an opportunity to makers of branded products to convert consumers to branded products

Influence Of Technology On Human Resource ManagementNavitha Pereira
Technology has transformed our lives and the way we communicate, how we learn, how we work and spend free time, in essence-it has more or less changed every aspect of human society one can think of. Undoubtedly it also affected organizations' employees and their workplaces in job design, conditions of work and other (numerous) ways. Today’s information technology has shown continuous development. Technology and HRM have a wide range of impact upon each other and therefore human resource professional should be eligible to adopt technologies that allow the re-engineering of the HR action, be prepared to maintain organizationally and work project changes caused by technology, and be able to maintain a proper managerial climate for innovative and knowledge-based organizations. HRM should be focused on the strategic objective and these strategic objectives are preparing information technology strategies to plan to fulfill the human resources strategies plan in the field of technology.

1. Introduction
India is rapidly growing as the biggest centres of IT industry and is preferred choice over
other countries for IT related services as many reputed Indian companies are competing and
thriving in the global market. Infosys, Wipro, and HCL Tech etc. are the pioneers in revenue
and profit generation and are well versed to the needs of their global customers while
operating from India. These companies aspire to achieve maximize profits, business
excellence, provide customer delight/satisfaction while fulfilling their societal and
environmental duties. Vision and Mission statements of most companies are the reflections of
the objectives such as technology and transformation while working on some other objectives
such as client satisfaction and innovation.
2. Purpose of Vision and Mission Statements
Mission and vision statements reflect the purpose of a business to employees and
organization leaders. A strategic plan is developed keeping these statements as foundation.
There are various aspects to consider in making an organizational strategic plan. Strategic
plans may mean a change in organizational structure or an organizational change. Change can
be a difficult and sometimes requires time. It’s important to get employees together for the
decision making process to induct. This can be articulated through the mission and vision
statement of the organization. Articulating and repeating the positives of the move toward
change in the organization will help employees stay engaged and motivated in the process.
Strategic planning will likely have its successes and failures. Leaders should celebrate the
little successes toward meeting objectives, which are part of the mission and vision statement.
The mission statement will help measure whether the strategic plan aligns with the overall
goals of the agency. The vision statement helps to provide inspiration to employees.
Employees who feel invested in the organizational change are more likely to stay motivated
and have higher levels of productivity.
4. 2
3. Importance of Vision and Mission Statements
Vision and mission are key elements of an organization’s strategic planning process. They
must be approved by the board of directors and should be effectively communicated to staff,
volunteers, members and other stakeholders for transparency.
The vision sets out what the organization wants to accomplish, and should inspire members,
staff and supporters.
Vision statements may describe that how things would be different as a result of the
organization’s activities and how the organization wants to be seen by others?
Good visions are aspirational. Some are hard‐to‐reach ideals while others are more modest or
describe objectives that are achievable in the near future. In either case, the vision helps
establish the unique contribution that the organization makes to society.
From a practical perspective a vision can be a quick, memorable way to describe the
organization’s reason for being. This can be valuable in times of crisis when it helps to
remember what is really important. The vision and mission are often published in the
organization’s annual reports, brochures and fund‐raising materials.
The mission typically describes what the organization does to achieve its vision. Because the
vision is often expressed as a dream or ideal, the mission helps clarify the practical aspects of
what the organization will actually do. Most missions emphasize action, using such words as:
involve, assist, support, provide, promote, contribute, etc.
The organization’s mission must be compatible with its legal purposes and must meet the
requirements for not‐for‐profit and if applicable, charitable status. A good mission statement
is concise and precise and it should identify the organization’s key stakeholders and set out
how the organization will serve them.
5. 3
4. Distinctive features of a Vision and Mission Statement
4.1. Distinctive features of a Vision Statement
The distinctive features of a vision statement are:
Inspirational: The vision statement is supposed to challenge, enthuse and inspire. Use
of powerful words and vivid phrases to articulate the kind of organization you are
trying to become. This motivates to lift the organization’s gaze above the grind of
day-to-day gripes and problems and to focus attention on 'the bigger picture' and the
potential rewards that await.
Ambitious: What targets you set and how high you aim will, in themselves, also say
something about you as an organization. Ambitious, perhaps even audacious targets
will help create the impression of an organization that is going places, that aims high
and demands high standards from its staff and students in a way that comfortable,
'middle-of-the-road' benchmarks will not
Realistic: This may sound odd following on immediately from a call to 'Be ambitious',
perhaps even contradictory, but it is an important part of the balancing act that is
required. For just as the purpose of the vision is to inspire and enthuse, it is equally
important that this ambition is tempered by an underlying sense of realism. People
need to believe that what is envisaged is actually achievable; otherwise there is no
reason for them to believe or buy in to it. It is perfectly possible to be both ambitious
and realistic and it is through successfully using these two forces that the best vision
statements will be formed.
Creative: Just like a commercial company may need to think creatively in order to
identify gaps in the market, there is a need to think imaginatively about what the
vision is and how it is described to help stand out from the crowd.
Descriptive: The ideal case is that to be concise but there is no need to enforce an
arbitrary limit on its length.
Clear: As with your mission statement it pays to avoid jargon, keep sentences short
and to the point and use precise, uncluttered language. Otherwise you risk diluting or
losing your message amongst the background 'noise'
Consistent: Though bearing in mind their different purposes, there should still be an
element of continuity between your mission and vision statements, or at least some
6. 4
careful thought and discussion given as to why this is not the case. At the same time,
the vision need not be constrained by the current remit of the mission. Perhaps the
institution is keen to explore new areas in the future: to become the region's
conference venue of choice, for example, in which case this would need to be
reflected in the mission statement in due course
4.2. Distinctive features of a Mission Statement
There are no rigid rules to developing a mission - what matters most is that is generally be
considered to be an accurate reflection and useful summary and what follows though are
some general features that we could bear-in-mind:
Concise and Precise: A mission statement should be as short and snappy as possible -
preferably brief enough to be printed on the back of a business card. The detail which
underpins it should be mapped out elsewhere.
Memorable: Obviously partially linked to the above, but try to make it something that
people will be able to remember the key elements of, even if not the exact wording
Unique: It's easy to fall into the 'motherhood and apple pie' trap with generic
statements that could equally apply to any institution. Focus on what it is that you
strive to do differently: how you achieve excellence, why you value your staff or what
it is about the quality of the student experience that sets you apart from the rest.
Realistic: Remember, your mission statement is supposed to be a summary of why
you exist and what you do. It is a description of the present, not a vision for the future.
If it bears little or no resemblance to the organization that your staff know it will
achieve little make sure it's current. Though it is not something which should be
changed regularly, neither should it be set in stone. Your institution's priorities and
focus may change significantly over time - perhaps in response to a change of
direction set by a new, or major changes in state/federal policy.

6. Technique for Analysis of Vision and Mission Statement
Content analysis is the technique for analysis of the vision and mission statements of the
Indian IT companies as it is a very effective tool; here certain set of themes or keywords are
identified in the vision and mission statements and then their occurrence is taken into account
and is recorded in terms of simple frequency and with the frequency data available, the
percent of occurrence of the different themes/keywords in the total set of different statements
is determined.
Content analysis is a research tool used to determine the presence of certain words or themes/
concepts within texts or sets of texts. Researchers quantify and analyze the presence,
meanings and relationships of such words and concepts, then make inferences about the
messages within the texts, the writer(s), the audience, and even the culture and time of which
these are a part. Texts can be defined broadly as books, book chapters, essays, interviews,
discussions, newspaper headlines and articles, historical documents, speeches, conversations,
advertising, theater, informal conversation, or really any occurrence of communicative
language. Texts in a single study may also represent a variety of different types of
occurrences. To conduct a content analysis on any such text, the text is coded, or broken
down, into manageable categories on a variety of levels- word, word sense, phrase, sentence,
or theme and then examined using content analysis.

7. Study Objectives and Methodologies
The technique of content analysis is used to do the analysis of the vision and mission
statements of the different Indian IT companies with the purpose of: (i) identifying
substantive themes contained in the vision and mission statements of Indian IT companies
and (ii) conduction of content analysis of these statements. The extraction of the main
themes/keywords from all of the vision and mission statements such as: technology,
sustainability, operations, growth, etc. These are listed as soon as they are read and there
frequency of occurrence is recorded for vision statements (Table 1) and mission statements
(Table 2). All the vision and mission statements may not be specific, selection of the
themes/keywords is done on the relevance to the business aspect.

The vision and mission statements of the different companies were sourced from the websites
of the companies namely Infosys Limited, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Hexaware
Technologies and MPhasis. These statements were subjected to the content analysis and
different themes/keywords with their frequency of occurrence was recorded.
Technology is the most prominent theme in the Vision statements as it appeared 4 times in
the 5 statements with a percentage of 80%, followed by the theme Transformation which
appeared 3 times with a percentage of 60% while Global Operations appeared 2 times with a
percentage of 40%.
