Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University believe they have found a viable rare earth-free magnetic material called cobalt iron carbide (CoFeC) that maintains its magnetic properties over time. As China controls 95% of the world's rare earth supply and has been driving prices up, this provides an alternative. The material could be useful for applications like targeted drug delivery and competing in the market now China's illegal trade practices are being phased out.
