Diphtheria Research Paper
Diphtheria is a highly contagious disease that causes inflammation in airway passages. Diphtheria
also has a connection with the infection pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Diphtheria
dates back to the early 1700 s, and was known for being a plague among children. Not until 1826,
was diphtheria given it s name. In 1885, the idea for intubation was finally brought up by a
physician by the name of Joseph O Dwyer. Many years later, a man by the name of Emil von
Behring, stated that a mixture of both the diphtheria toxin and antitoxin produced an immunization.
In 2009, it was declared that since 2004, there had not been one single case of diphtheria in the
United States. The diseasehas almost disappeared in the United States now, but sadly there are still

Diphtheria is spread (transmitted) from person to person, usually through respiratory droplets,
from coughing or sneezing. Rarely, spreading may occur from skin lesions (like an abnormal
sore) or clothes that are contaminated with discharges from lesions (like a sore) of an infected
person. ( Diphtheria : Causes and Transmission 1). Diphtheria used to be a widespread childhood
disease, but because of advanced technology and medicine, it has become even more rare (
Diphtheria World of Microbiology 1). After 1988, all of the cases of diphtheria in America have
been confirmed that the people who have it are immigrants or tourists from other countries (
Diphtheria World of Microbiology 1). People who have not been immunized may get diphtheria
at any age. The disease is spread most often by droplets from the coughing or sneezing of an
infected person or carrier. ( Diphtheria World of Microbiology 1). The largest outbreak of
diphtheria was in the Soviet Union from 1990 1995 resulting in about 5,000 deaths. There have
been other outbreaks in different countries like India and France( Diptheria Gale

Women In Media Essay
Women in Television, and what can be said.
Skinny, blond, ditzy, annoying, un educated, easy, and considered a typical women. If you re a
women and you hear these words, does it make you think of who you are, or your mother or
sisters? I think not...but I do think about the people I see on television and in magazines or in
movies. What I want to know is who is writing the scripts for some of the television shows that I
watch. I would like to hope that it s not women putting these stereotypes on their fellow sisters .

Monica Bing (Courteney Cox Arquette) plays somewhat of a bitchy Character and is tends to be
very bossy and sneaky. Cox seems to be to also be very much so like Aniston s character in the
sense of physical perfection. Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) plays absolutely the most stereotypical
female. She is a blond who doesn t understand anything...but it s a good laugh right? It seems to
me that America finds it funny when we watch these blond women on t.v, the way they are
portrayed makes it seem as though that s the way all women of that kind are. A friend, a very
highly rated show, seems to be doing something right...and I can guaranty you that a lot of the
viewers are women. I watch friends...but there are times that it just can t keep it on that channel due
to the effect of stomach illness it has on me when Monica won t shut up and is ridiculously
annoying.

centered lady, or is it because of the fouled mouth drunk who married rich? Ally McBeal, a women
who wins court cases because of sexual appeal or because of un thought tactics. Ally also a very
thin woman, some say sickly, but it seems at though all the women I have mentioned with the
exception of the character Karen (who is perfectly healthy looking) seems to be extremely

Cain Was The Firstborn Of Adam And Eve Essay
Cain was the firstborn of Adam and Eve. In him were deposited all the desires of restoration of
the original state of the man and mainly of the state of intimate communion with God the all
powerful. Therefore, Cain shows himself to be a person who did not please God with his
offerings, because his motivation was different from the motivation of his brother Abel, as he
sought to present the best of his flock to the Lord as we can see at Genesis 4:3 5 And in process
of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had
respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And
Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell . It happened at the end of a time Cain brought
from the fruit of the earth an offering to the Lord; Abel, for his part, brought of the firstfruits of
his flock and the fat thereof. The Lord of Abel and his offering were pleased; While Cain and his
offering were not pleased. It is understood that Cain would have offered an offer thankfully and not
voluntarily as was the case of Abel. This form of offering of Cain displeased the Lord, who came to
pay attention to Abel s offering. Writing about the punishment God applied to Cain, which was
intended to lead him to repentance, shows how much his heart was blacked out by sin and rebellion
against the Creator. But nevertheless punishment

Commentary On The Book Blue Bloods By Melissa De La Cruz
Where to begin? Well, to start things off, Blue Bloods is the first book in the Blue Blood Series
written by Melissa de la Cruz. The series itself is realistic fiction as the setting in this series takes
place in New York City. As for the main characters in this book, Schuyler Van Alen, a sophomore
at a private school in New York City who has experienced several changes when she turned 15.
Oliver Hazard Perry is a human that is assigned as a Human Conduit to Schuyler and was aware
that Blue Bloods exist, despite being a mortal. Benjamin Jack Force is a Blue Blood and is
described as the most popular at the school. His twin sister, Madeleine Mimi Force, is rather harsh
against Schuyler. At first, it was just jealousy at first, but when Jack started to show interest, she
begins to hate her for real. To start things off, everything... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite the trouble I had to understand what s going on, I would recommend it to a very
minimum number of people. From what I read, it has vampires, so anyone who enjoys novels
with vampires would enjoy to read this novel. But I would also recommend this to people who
would like realistic fantasy. It has a nice feeling to read a novel made up of fictional things while
adding realistic places such as New York City. To my belief, the ideal readership Melissa is
aiming for is for readers who like realistic fantasy. When you think about it, fictional beings in
the realistic world is something interesting to read, at least for me. Fantasy has been an
inspiration for me and I m sure others would feel the same as well. I wish it would ve been more
easy for me to comprehend what s going on to truly enjoy it, but alas, it didn t for me. As for
what to read next, I have been putting thought about reading a novel from a different series and
from a different genre. If I truly want to enjoy reading more novels, I need to be able to read
different books from different genres. I can t be picky on my

Alexander The Great, King Of Asia
Alexander the Great, King of Asia, King of the Four Quarters of the World, King of Babylon,
King of Macedonia, etc. Born in 356 B.C., he died in 323 from a sickness at age 32. In
Alexander s short life he became one of the best military tacticians in the world. His military
genius allowed him to create and rule an enormous Western empire in the ancient world. He was
successful in all his military endeavors and his empire, stretching from Greece to India, shows
that. He changed the course of history with all that he did. Without Alexander we wouldn t have
the Alexandria Library and many other things. He created a new culture which was a
combination of Greece and Persia cultures, new or improved war tactics, changed the way
people thought and so much more. He may have had a short life, but that didn t stop him. He
managed to do so many wonderful things that his legend and legacy still live on today. Early

How Did Lenin Gain Power
The first two leaders of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin had very different
methods in commanding their country. Differences can be seen in the way they achieved their
political power and how they dealt with their political opponents. Similarities can be seen in the
way that these men were unwilling to share their power. Vladimir Leninachieved his political
power by rallying fellow Bolsheviks to seize government installations and storm the capital. The
plan made Lenin the visible figurehead of the Bolsheviks and the new government that was put into
place. While Lenin overtly planned his seizure of power, Joseph Stalinwas able to achieve his
power behind the scenes. Stalin used position as general secretary of the... Show more content on

Of the delegates who attended the National Congress of the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet
Union) in 1934, fully 70 percent had been executed by the time of the National Congress in 1939
(pg. 90). Through this purge, Stalin solidified his control over the communist party and the
country. Lenin differed by allowing his Bolshevik opponents to remain in their posts, but was
mindful of their activities. He took action to prevent these opponents from ousting him form
power. This action can be seen when Lenin, weary of his opponents turning to the Romanov
family for leadership had the entire family executed. A similar characteristic that both of these
leaders shared was their refusal to share power. This can be seen in Stalin s accumulation of
powers as the general secretary, which lead to his complete control of the country. Lenin also
maintained this trait as he actively tried to subvert the leftist that had opposed the coup before it
had occurred. I think that if Lenin had lived another twenty years that the country may have had a
completely different government in place. Lenin was able to guide the party through the civil car
that solidified his power in the new government, but he had a lot of opponents with differing views.
I think it is possible that there could have been another coup to try to

The Massacre Of Israeli Delegates At The Summer Munich...
The events of the past have a way of transforming themselves over time. Something that occurred
mere minutes ago can evolve over the next few hours, and an event that seemed so straight
forward many years past finds itself a new meaning within the greater context of the period. The
same concept applies to a specific event a mere 45 years ago, namely the massacre of Israeli
delegates at the summer Munich Olympics of 1972.
This event is now portrayed in standard textbooks as being part of a larger event of the time
period, one of the lingering effects of the Jordanian Civil War of 1971, an event that has been
dubbed Black September in the history books. As a result of the efforts of the Jordanians placed
against various Palestinian groups during the war, the Fatah, a militant Palestinian group and PFLP,
another radical group, jointly created a terror group named after the conflict. The Black September
Organization attempted to force revenge on both the Jordanian authority and the Israelis, who had
occupied their lands in Palestine. The organization became known to assassinate Israelis abroad in
an act of revenge (Smith).
However, at the time of the Olympics, the world s reaction was not as cut and dry as it is today.
In both the political and public worlds, the attitude was one of shock and horror. The Secretary
General of the United Nations said that while the event was, on its own, one that was terrible, it
was made worse by infringing on the idea that the Olympic Games

Niccolo Machiavelli s The Qualities Of The Prince And Lao...
Government: A Profound Leader
Since the being of time, humans have sought out law, or government. Governments have been set
in place all throughout the world to try to maintain peace and order. As easy as it sounds,
governments can be demolished without the right leader. However, that is the catch, what makes a
good leader? Niccolo Machiavelli s The Qualities of the Prince and Lao Tzu s Tao te Ching gives
some ideas on how a leader should control their government. Although Machiavelli s and Lao Tzu
s ideas do not quite go hand and hand, there are some similarities. They both spoke similarly on
how people should feel about their leader. Lao Tzu views one of the best qualities of a leader is
being loved by his people. On the other hand, Machiavelli believes the best is to be loved and
feared, but sense he thinks that is impossible he had rather just be feared. Machiavelli and Lao
Tzu are more opposite than alike. According to Machiavelli, war should be a profession of a
prince. He suggested a prince to think about war all the time and know the surroundings
constantly. However, Lao Tzu suggests a leader not to force war on anyone because the outcome
will result in revenge and not to waste time preparing for war. Also, they had different views on
what to do with their money. Machiavelli insisted on saving his income for preparation of war,
whereas Lao Tzu believed in sharing his money throughout the people.
Although Machiavelli and Lao Tzu would probably get in

Response to Literature
The free bird thinks of another breeze....a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams... The two
literary works I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and Harper Lee s To Kill a
Mockingbird can be seen as mockingbirds that have flown over fields of prejudice and repeat what
they have seen for all to hear. Jem Finch, a young boy and lawyer s son from To Kill a Mockingbird
clearly symbolizes a mockingbird because of his youth and innocence, and because of his
innocence he cannot fully understand the racism in the story. Jem also has many similarities to the

While Jem was a young boy he acted very similar to the free bird in I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings. He lived life to its fullest never stopping to think of the racism he was being shielded
from. The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own. (Angelou, 14
18) In this stanza of the poem you can infer that the free bird is very happy with life and never
thinks of anything upsetting. The upsetting things in this instance would be the racism in the
story; the free bird never stops to think about the caged bird. As the summer progressed, so did
our game. (Lee, pg. 52) When Jem and his sister Scout meet Dill, a boy in their neighbor s yard,
they get to know him and play with him. They are always thinking of improving their game,
living life to its fullest as much as a kid can. When they are playing said game, Jem never stops
to think about the racism in the world and is shielded from it by the fun of being a kid.
Concluding that they are similar characters because both Jem and the free bird enjoy their lives.
Another reason why the free bird and Jem , the symbol of a mockingbird are similar is they are
both able to do what they please. A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream

Early Church Worship Practices And The Psalms
3. Early church worship practices and the Psalms The purpose of this section is to clarify major
historical foundations of Christian worship practiced by the early church and its relation to the
book of Psalms. The primary objective is to explain the influence of the Psalms on the worship life
of the early church. By analyzing the New Testament context, believers can have a clear perception
of the meaning of the book of Psalms in the worship life of the early church. Therefore, scholars
assume that is fundamental to learn about the interaction between the book of Psalms and the New
Testament in order to define Christian worship in the New Testament context. Moreover, this unit
will exemplify aspects that influenced worship in the New Testament. Scholars support the
argument that Christian worship is definitely associate with culture. A research on church history
must also consider the cultural aspects of the early church period. Indeed, cultural influences
affected the worship life of the early church. Furthermore, culture involves a style of life where
tradition, religion, and moral values are particularly interrelated. Music was a major part of the
cultural life of the early church. Moreover, there was a spiritual emphasis on music and on worship
in the New Testament period. Early Christians were responsible to adapt and accept the main
principles related to worship. Additionally, the worship principles from the Old Testament had a
significant influence on early

Maximum Phonational Frequency Range Case Studies
Maximum Phonational Frequency Range (MPFR) is described as the maximum range of
phonation between a client s lowest modal/chest register tone and highest loft tone/falsetto register.
The MPFR is typically determined by using a pitch matching procedure. Ms. Noid will be
instructed to sustain a vowel (i.e. /a/) matching the pitch of a presented tone (i.e. sine wave). She
will start phonation at a comfortable frequencylevel, and will incrementally increase her frequency
range production, until she can no longer sustain phonation. Then, Ms. Noid will be instructed to
incrementally decrease her frequency range until her modal phonation can no longer be sustained.
The rationale for using an MPFR measure is to explore the physical condition of the phonatory
mechanism. Furthermore, it is a way to quantify the client s frequency variability, measured through
an entire range of frequencies (i.e. highest to lowest), which are produced with maximal effort.

Ms. Noid will have a constrained phonational frequency range of approximately 1 2 octaves,
reflecting a physiological limitation and impaired vocal mechanism, due to a unilateral vocal fold
paralysis. She will be unable to transition between low to high frequency ranges, and exhibit a vocal
quality characterized as breathy and hoarse.
3.Frequency Perturbation (jitter) is an indicator of the stability of phonation. It is a measurement of
cycle to cycle variability in fundamental frequency. Typically, results are acquired from a three
second mid segment sample of a sustained phonation task, avoiding phonatory onset and offset.
Fundamental frequency and intensity values should be specified since they vary, affecting the
Frequency Perturbation (jitter) values.
The rationale for measuring jitter is that it provides objective measures for distinguishing a normal
from a disordered voice, and estimates vocal

Analysis Of The Novel Uncle Tom s Cabin
Catlin Hetrick
Literature and Culture
In Uncle Tom s Cabin, Stowe not only tackles the structure of slavery itself, but depicts femininity
through the development and representation of good, Christian values. Stowe designates the role of
mother and homemaker to said females present in the novel, both living and dead. Frequent
establishment of the portrayal of the female figure furthers Stowe s pro domesticity stance and the
woman s ability to indirectly undermine the structure of slavery. These descriptions serve as
testaments to solidify the notion that Stowe s end goal, getting people to feel right, is dependent
upon the potential of the Christian mother figure. While the shortcomings of the mother/child

and Mrs. Byrd, for example. These female/male comparisons illustrate Stowe s faith in the maternal
role and the power that women possess.
To elucidate the aforementioned ability of the maternal figure it must be known that the ideal
nature of this influence is an indirect one. Rather than direct action from the women, Stowe
emphasizes the ability of women to exert a positive moral influence over the men around her.
Moral guidance from the women, then, may serve to subtly sway the actions of men, who can

Urbanization In The Progressive Era
The Progressive Era
The progressive era was a time period in America after reconstruction that took place from 1900 to
1920. The progressive era focused mainly on social and political reform, trying to fix America s
economy by working towards equal conditions for individuals, stopping political corruption and
increasing government intervention on social and economic issues. Progressivists were social
activists and political reformers working to improve conditions and the treatment of the American
people. The progressive era was successful in the fight to reform the United States by improving
industrialization, urbanization cities, and reforming America s social and gender classes.

Urbanization in the progressive era was a huge factor, with millions of immigrants flocking to
America for jobs. African americans flooded north also in search of jobs. Cities exploded
outward and upward, condensing people into building and houses. This, given the time was
highly unsanitary, with waste and filth in the streets, disease spread rapidly. Pollution caused
poor living conditions often crowded and unsafe. Often there was little clean water or paved
roads for transportation. Many people in the city s began to push for urban reformers. A
Progressive reformer named Jane Addams stepped up and opened one of the first settlement houses
in Chicago with Ellen Gates Starr, which greatly helped out local immigrants by producing
education and even social services. Many reformers supported laws that would improve living
conditions in the center city and fought to get rid of political corruption, which had been widely
spreading.
During the progressive era social, racial, and gender boundaries limited the country. The
progressive era kick started the modern American middle class. One of the progressivists and
socialists main goals was to reform the social society. They wanted to provide education and a safe
place for people to work, live and learn. A well known progressive governor named Robert La
Follette was the leader of a progressive movement called the Вґlaboratory of democracyВґ and by

Black Colleges And Universities ( Hbcus ) Essay
Introduction
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the
United States that were established before 1964. As amended by The Higher Education Act of
1965, a part B institution refers to any Historically Black college or university that was
established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans,
and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by
the Secretary to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such
an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation. Though in 1837
Cheyne University of Pennsylvania and 1854 Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) had been
established for Black education, Black Colleges and Universities became recognized by the United
States Government in the 1890 s.
The second Morrill Land Grant Act specified that states using federal higher education funds must
provide an education to Black students, either by opening the doors of their public universities to
those of African descent, or by establishing schools specifically to serve them. Integration for white
public and private institutions was completely out of the question due to the substantial racial
divide within the United States so, many Southern states created a completely separate set of
institutions serving Blacks. Thus were born many public and private Black colleges. Of the 100+

Analysis Of The Boy Died In My Alley
Published first during the decade of the 1990s The Boy Died in My Alley remains a significant
poem of Gwendolyn Brooks as she moves from traditional forms of poetry such as sonnets,
ballads to the most unrestrictive free verse and includes the sad rhythm of the blues. This poem
offers an amazing juxtaposition of dramatic poetic forms, narrative, and lyric (Guth Rico). The
story is most often simple but with the last line, they transcend the restriction of place and cover
universal plight. Most often the characters of the people are memorable only due to fact that they
are trying to survive the trials and tribulations of daily living. For example, in the poem, The Boy
Died in My Alley , the author narrates an incident when a black boy is murdered in her back alley
and the policeman asks her whether she has heard the shot. As she was passionate about the bad
experiences of black community in the United States, her poetryis mainly about their plight in the
society (Guth Rico). The main focus of the poem, The Boy Died in My Alley is to study and
analyze the reasons behind the violence that is associated with African American children who live
on the street.
Like her other poems, the story of the poem, The Boy Died in My Alley is very simple, but the
narrator gradually narrows down the incident described in the poem to the general plight of the
black children who live on the street. The poem starts when a policeman informs poet about a
black boy who was shot behind

Home Ownership By Millennials
Figures lie and liars figure is a quote that means people can turn numbers around to suit their agenda
/purposes. Absolute salaries and/or prices may be higher today than in 1997 but that statement does
not specify whether it takes into account inflation, paying a larger percentage of health insurance
costs or the decrease in other benefits like relocation expenses and tuition reimbursement. So,
assuming the statement to be true, is it accurate?
The data supporting a slow adoption rate for home ownership by Millennials may be due to
financial factors such as increased student loan debt upon graduation or inability to find higher wage
jobs to meet debt to income ratios or non financial factors such as job mobility, the ability and ...

The alternative is to go to a sub prime lender offering high interest rates.
Home prices are skyrocketing. It s a seller s market. With higher home prices come higher down
payments and higher mortgages. It almost requires a two person income to afford a home. Entering
into a legal mortgage contract with someone who is not a significant other is dangerous. With the
prevalence of divorce, even buying a home with a life partner is risky business. The partnership
deteriorates and there goes the home because one income can t support the debt.
Assuming Millennials can overcome the financial factors working against home ownership, then
they must look at the non financial factors which are equally as rough to navigate. Start with job
mobility. If a Millennial is lucky enough to find a well paying job that will support student loan
debts and a mortgage, the job is likely non entry level within an organization. The job may
require frequent travel which would decrease time available to maintain one s house. The job
may require relocation which can be costly if the company is not picking up the cost (and fewer
companies are these days). Additionally, technology is creating a more mobile work environment
meaning employees don t necessarily have to live near their places of employments any more.

Final Reflection Paper
1.Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a person has to make in their life. It is
so important because that is what we will have to do to support ourselves throughout life. My
whole life I have always wanted to do something where people will remember me. Throughout this
course, I have learned that I do not know what I want to do with my chosen major. I do not regret
majoring in Criminal Justicebecause I m positive I want to do something within the criminal

course, I have learned that I m a great multi tasker, I m always prepared ahead of time with my
deadlines and I never had to give excuses as to why something is not done on time.
a.I never expected to learn more than what this class had to offer. Even though the semester is
over, I feel I ve learned a lot about myself, and life after college. I spent about half of the year
wearing sweatpants, baggy, flashy clothing, and I was okay with that because it s important to
feel comfortable. This semester, I have also learned that if you dress well you get the
respectable attention and needed. When I had the interview and had to dress up, I noticed many
people looking my way and praising me, I felt respected and felt good about myself as well.
Stepping out of my comfort zone has never felt so good. I believe this would help me in my

many unanswered questions continue to fill us with such a sense of wonder, awe, and immense
curiosity.
Stonehenge is perhaps the worlds most famous prehistoric monument. This remarkable monument

complex, sacred landscape.
Building began in the late Neolithic period around 2500 3000 BC, as a simple earth work enclosure
where prehistoric people buried their cremated dead. When people think of the Neolithic era, they
often think of Stonehenge. There were two types of stone used at Stonehenge: the larger Saracens

Voltaire s Criticism of Leibniz Essay
Voltaire s Criticism of Leibniz
The Enlightenment, or Age of Reason, was a time of great intellectual and moral growth for
humanity. In part because of the increasing effect of the Protestant Reformation, people were
starting to turn to reason for the answers to life s questions, rather than to the dogmas of the
Catholic Church. Scientific inquiry became widespread and accepted as the standard for inquiring
into the nature of the universe. The scientific method was developed. For the first time in the history
of art, perspective was used in paintings. (Now people who were farther away looked farther

(World 11 33) The implication was that the king could perform any action that he wanted to
perform, that this action would be sanctioned by God, and that the people had no recourse in the
event of injustice. During the Enlightenment, the Social Contract theory of government became
popular, in part due to abuse of power by European monarchs. This doctrine was popularized by the
political and philosophical writings of Locke, Hobbes, Kant, and Rousseau, among others. It held
that humanity had originally existed in a state of nature, without any sort of government or law, and
that people entered a compact with other individuals. The people, in entering into the contract, gave
up some personal liberty to gain security and the other benefits of government intended to secure
law and order. (Government 7 22; Philosophy 19 22)
The social contract justification for the existence of government led to the establishment of the idea
of government by the consent of the governed, a view which now forms the basis for the
governments of the United States and other democratic countries. (Government 7 22)
Another philosophical idea which arose and was popular during the Enlightenment was the

Perhaps the greatest threat to Krispy Kreme is the health conscious consumer. With around 240
calories in each donut, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are by far one of the unhealthiest treats you can

their personal health. Failure to be proactive in addressing consumer health concerns, such as
obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes; could result in a significant loss of it s 24.6% of the market

They remain to be the top competitor in the market because they are constantly changing their

Analysis of Prospero from The Tempest by Shakespeare Essay
Prospero, the male lead of the Tempest, starts out as the victim of the play, but as the story goes
on, it becomes apparent that he is actually the cause of all the problems and plots within the play.
Prospero is important because he is the puppeteer that leads all of the characters to complete his
orders. He strings all of the characters along to do his bidding, and by the end of the play, he is the
only one who wins. Prospero is interesting because, without him, there would be no plot. He is the

Prospero also punishes Trinculo and Stephano for no reason. Trinculo and Stephano have no reason
to be on the island besides aiding and abetting Caliban in his plot to overthrow Prospero. Because
Prospero originally made the different groups of people who stayed on the island, he must have
wanted Trinculo and Stephano to meet Caliban, and in turn punish them for a crime that he made
them commit, implying that Prospero wanted to use his magic to further harm more people.
Prospero enslaves Caliban and Ariel, seizing the island for him and Miranda, just like Alonso
and Antonio had done to him. The rightful ruler of the island is Caliban, and although Caliban at
one time tried to rape Miranda, Prospero repeatedly punishes him for this one event that occurred
much before this play takes place. Prospero initially helps Caliban by educating him and in
exchange, Caliban taught Prospero and Miranda how to survive on the island. Prospero uses the
act of attempted rape to justify his seizure of the island. This take over should have been enough
punishment but Prospero enslaves Caliban, threatening to hurt him if he does not do his bidding.
By endlessly punishing Caliban, Prospero inadvertently shows his malicious side. Although
Prospero freed Ariel from the tree he was bound inside, Prospero blackmails Ariel and essentially
enslaves him too. Prospero repeatedly tells Ariel that he will set him free but, it seems as if that is

Hampton s apartment, he was at home sleeping. The police took it upon themselves to go into

Mark Clark. Mark Clark was another leader of the Black Panthers during the time, and he just so
happened to be in Hampton s apartment with him the night of the raid. This was not justified
because Hampton had done nothing to harm the police officers that night. It was already horrible
enough that they decided to raid his home, but then killing him took it over the edge. If they were

like they had to shoot him. Although, the Black Panthers were known for killing cops and
revolutionary politics, but unless Fred Hampton was in the act of trying to kill a cop, there is no
reason why he had to be killed. In conclusion, Fred Hampton s assassination

Gainsborough, A Story of a Painter and an Era Essay
Gainsborough, A Story of a Painter and an Era
To be able to appraise the originality of eighteenth century English art, one must recognize its
importance in history. A great painter to research is Thomas Gainsborough. His artwork was an
important aspect of the art community of the middle seventeen hundreds. His paintings seem to
bring brightness and color to a period in art that needed his creative boost. His combination of
portrait paintings along with beautiful landscapes was not recognized in his time, but would be
recognized as remarkable later in history.

He was fond of drawing trees grass and other objects that would not be found in an indoor studio.
He was not the first to draw backgrounds in his paintings; many have done this before him. His
task was to paint a background that was just as important as the subjects do but not distract either.
By painting outdoors, his paintings became much more colorful that most paintings of the past

Brighter paintings were much improvement over the paintings of the past. They were very eye

People began to start noticing his artwork even though he did not have a degree or formal
education in art; this was very promising to the young painter. His work slowly moved up into the
great artwork of the city. His name was becoming known all around. He can begin his career with
the bright colors he added to the scenery of the painting.
One superb example of where the colors and scenery effected a painting is in the painting Mr. and

Comparing Clothing in Knight s Tale and the Miller s Tale...
One of the striking differences between the Knyghts Tale and the Millers Tale (which is supposed
to quit(e) the Knyghts Tale) is that of clothing (the former tale) and lack of clothing (in the latter).
Upon an inspection of the General Prologue s description of the Knyght, I found that clothing is a
very signifcant part of the Knyght s Tale. Chaucers decription of him may forshadow (or, since
Chaucer wrote the tales after they were told, color his perceptions of the Knyght) the importance of
clothing in the Knyght s Tale. Special attention is paid to the Knyght s coatof mail.

But this ornament may in fact hinder the tale. When Chaucer began the Tales with the Knyght s
Tale, he was probably quite aware that he was going to borrow heavily from other tales.
...Scholarship has uncovered and stressed his strong relationship to conventional rhetoric...
(Finlayson 133). Chaucer probably felt as if he was about to be bound by the fact that he was
borrowing from another tale (from Boccaccio s Il Teseida delle nozze d Emilia), and that he would
have to change it to make it his own. The characters that he uses are bound by literary stereotypes
and narrative function which they fulfil rather than transcend or reject. (Finlayson 147). Chaucer
transcends the Romantic stereotype, but the characters don t. The characters are bound to
convention and the ornament of Romance, much like they are bound by thier clothes that define
them, keep them from true human (flesh) contact, and that ultimately destroys them.
The first significant mention of clothing is when, after Theseus has conquered Thebes, the soldiers
go through the pile of corpses.

Analysis Of The Movie The Cheeks Were Red
Long before Woody Allen s jasmine was blue, his cheeks were red over an allegation about a
midnight not in Paris, but in his attic. He was called an irrational man within the halls of his own
home in Manhattan, putting Allen in a new kind of spotlight. After ending his twelve year
relationship with Mia Farrow, accusations arose claiming that Mr. Allen had molested the couples
adopted daughter Dylan when she was seven. However, despite the precarious circumstances in
which the allegations arose, both sides continue to maintain their respective arguments. Mr. Allen
objects to said accusations, claiming he is innocent. Mia, on the opposing side, is in defense of
Dylan (now thirty) who did not speak on the issue publicly until February of 2014... Show more

Even though the accusation were ludicrous in nature Mia pushed and charges were being sought
for Woody Allen. A progression of police investigations followed, in which the Connecticut Police
enlisted the help of the Child Sexual Abuse Clinic of the Yale New Haven Hospital. After
evaluating all parties involved they summed up their conclusions by making a public statement
that follows thus; It is our expert opinion that Dylan was not sexually abused by Mr. Allen.
Further, we believe that Dylan s statements on videotape and her statements to us during our
evaluation do not refer to actual events that occurred to her on August 4th, 1992 (Allen). Due to
these finding Mr. Allen was not charged with any crimes, but found the judge irresponsible for
his verdict of we will probably never know what occurred (Allen). As a result of the scandal, Mr.
Allen lost custody of his children. Twenty years after the accusations, Dylan Farrow makes her
first public comment on the incident in an open letter published in The New York Times. In the
letter she states her firm belief that Mr. Allen is guilty, in addition she shames many celebrities by
name for continuing to work with Woody Allen. In response to this letter; Woody Allen published
his own open letter in The New York Times. He

Damnation Conflict Analysis
The movie Damnation showed conflict in values by groups such as the Elwha tribe, people who
worked at the dam, and environmentalists. These groups all had their reasons for why the dam
should be taken down or not. In this paper I will argue that the values held by the different groups
involved in the conflict over these dams have shaped those conflicts: first, the Elwha tribe need
abundant resources and have a spiritual heritage to follow: second, the dam workers need their jobs
to support their families and themselves: third, environmentalists encourage the use of
hydroelectricityand the government use the dams as a renewable source of energy and finally, the
environmentalists who believed hatchery fish is an inefficient way of bringing abundant resources
to the river. As you can see the values held by these groups have shaped those conflicts on why the
dam should be either removed or not.
Firstly, the values held by the Elwha tribe shaped the conflict over these dams because they needed
abundant resources in order to follow their traditions. Certain fishes such as sockeye salmon were
not able to get upstream because of the dam; moreover, this resulted in sockeye salmons not
being able to migrate and have offspring. The values held by the Elwha tribe shaped this conflict
because sockeye salmon is a traditional part of their lifestyle and they need to be able to catch and
cook these fish to follow their traditions. As stated by Steve Ralph, the Elwha tribe considered the

Cultural And Historical Significance Of The Film 12 Years...
The Cultural and Historical Significance of the Film 12 Years A Slave The cultural and
historical significance of the film has changed and reshaped the views and cultures of African
Americans with the roles that they have as a race in society as a result of the racial formation
and performance portrayed in the film. The movie presents a verifiable and precise account of
the collective experience of slaves in the United States of America in the late 18th century. The
basic facts of the movie from the start to the finish concern events about the places, the time, and
the practices that took place during the slave era in detail. The movie is inspired by a book
written by David Wilson about the narrative events of Solomon Northup as a slave. Both the
book and the movie share the same title. In the book, he speaks with a lot of authority on all
subjects especially enslavement of black Americans and in the process, he names popular
leaders as well as several other landmarks without fear of contradiction because we understand
that public records have enough knowledge to defend his position. In the movie, the slave trader
is accused of keeping slaves as captive in a slave pen in Washington DC. Not only is the name of
the slave and the slaver mentioned, but also their accomplices in addition to the location where the
slave pen is located, the structure of the slave pen, an all details that allow one to imagine the
scenario that of the poor slaves had to undergo, all stacked together

How Did Marie Curie Contribute To Society
Marie Curie once said nothing in life is to be feared: it is only to be understood. Now is the time
to understand more so that we may fear less. Her words are very relevant to the contributions she
did to today s society. Marie was very persistent and dedicated when it came to her work that she
even risked her health to pursue her studies. She was one of the first scientists to work with
radioactivity and she, along with her husband, discovered two elements of the periodic table,
polonium and radium. Marie went through a couple obstacles but was able to complete her studies
and pursue her dreams, making a big impact.
Marie Curie changed her name after she moved to France and married, but originally her birth
name is actually Maria Salomea SkЕ‚odowska. She was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw,
Poland. Marie lived in Warsaw, Poland along with her sister Bronya and three other siblings, until
she graduated high school. She later moved to Paris, France to pursue her dream of attending
college, where she adapted the French writing of Maria. Curie was the first under many categories

Mmr Vaccine Can Cause Autism Spectrum Disorder Essay
It s more than likely you ve never had measles, mumps or rubella (MMR), all serious viral
infections, In the 19th and early 20th centuries, these illnesses struck hundreds of thousands of
people in the United States each year, mostly children, and tens of thousands of people died
(National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases 2). These diseases, today, have mostly been
eradicated by the use of vaccinations. Although vaccines are said to reduce the chance of receiving
certain infections or diseases, controversial ideas believe that the MMR vaccinecan cause autism
spectrum disorder. Autism is a developmental disorder that impairs communication and interaction;
it has no confirmed cause. Usually, a child begins to show signs of autism around 12 to 18 months,
which is also the same age when a child receives the MMR vaccine. Because of this correlation,
apprehensive parents are choosing to not vaccinate their children. Now, an increasing amount of
children are receiving certain diseases that have been dormant in the United States for years.
Nervous parents should educate themselves about the risks of vaccines, but should also know that
the consequences of not vaccinating outweigh the minor side effects. Studies, stories and statistics
have shown that vaccinations do not cause autism spectrum disorder. Autism spectrum disorder
hinders a child s capability to interact and communicate with others; ASD is now defined by the

Differences Between Worldliness And The Church
Terms floated in Christians circles often. Words such as worldly , flesh , lust , and more thrusted
their glare at Christians. Their message echoed together. Stay away from these things. These three
words together compile a concept common and criticized in the church. Even the Bible referenced
this concept called worldliness. Christians debated it. Gray areas encircled the concept. Regardless,
worldliness endangered the Christian with enticements but strengthened them in Christ.
Worldliness, a synonym of materialism, meant an interest in, concern with, or devotion to things of
this world as especially as opposed to a future stage of existence. The worldly minded person
focused on life s pleasures whether good or evil. The focus of worldliness encircled their passions
and pleasures before them in the moment. I John 2:16 defined what encompassed the world as
those things which leave God out of the picture. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and
the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Therefore the
term world referenced fleshly lusts, eyes of lust, and pride. Anything that straggled away from God
s principles could be defined as worldliness.
Materialism in the form of fleshly lusts directed its arrow at the target of the sensual or carnal
nature of man. According to Wayne Jackson, Worldliness elevates the urgings of the flesh over the
teaching of the Spirit. Worldliness in fleshly lusting craved

The History Of The World Wide Web
The history of the World Wide Web was created on August 6th, 1991 by Tim Berners Lee.
(Bryant, 2012). Due to the creation of the World Wide Web, many things have changed. Websites
have made everything either easier or more complicated. But, we will talk about the easier this
world has gotten. Some websites that have made life easier are Facebook, Strayer University,
Amazon, EBay, Google, Gmail, Yahoo, PayPal, Walmart, Schwan s, Myspace
, Pogo, Trip Advisor,
and Home Chef. These are just to name a few of the websites that have made our lives easier.
I could not agree more, that technology is like the Devil to many households making parents
divorce due to lack of person to person communication, and it makes partners want to have
infidelities in their relationships. But, nonetheless, websites like the ones I listed above are to make
our lives easier.
We will start with Social Networking sites. Social Networking sites, like Facebook, and
Myspace, are to bring people closer to each other from distances away. I have known of many
relatives finding each other after many years of not knowing each other, due to adoption and
other circumstances. They always help connect business to the users. You will always see ads
on the sides of Facebook while playing a game, if it is not full screen, of business that you might
like. Social Networking can be the cause of distraction with family as well. There was a report of a
lady playing Farmville, a very popular game on Facebook and it used to

Artificial Insemination and the Rights of Women, Men, and...
Women have adamantly battled for political and social reproductive rights since, in particular

However, with the womenВ№s liberation movementof the 1970s, physician assisted and self

Women, usually healthy and fertile, enlist the help of physicians because they do not have access
to the one element that will yield them a child. And so, doctors prescribe a cure of sorts sperm. The
procedure allows women increased power to regulate the reproductive processes of their bodies.
Ironically, artificial insemination was not created as a method of empowerment for women. Rather
for men. Male scientists and researchers developed the technology for eugenic purposes, not to
alleviate the pressures of alternative lifestyles of women. That is, to improve the human species.
With the onset of research in genetics in the beginning of the twentieth century, scientists
entertained theories of quality control with respect to human reproduction. Scientists such as
Francis Crick and Dr. William Shockley believed that the growth rate of the population was
increasing too rapidly, and most importantly certain unfavorable demographic clusters were
increasing. In short, the wrong classes and races were reproducing with more frequency than was
desired by these men. They hoped that future progeny would be of the same superior caliber as
themselves. To yield this, they proposed schemes to tax children; to provide cash incentives for
sterilization; to license women for the number of children they may bear and men for the sperm
they may deposit in seed banks;

The Differences Between Calvinism And Arminianism
Has God decided whether or not you will be saved and go to Heaven? Is there anything you can
do in determining your place in either Heaven or Hell? Calvinism and Arminianism are two
differing theological standpoints that have been and are being debated frequently. These stances
give an answer to the question of whether or not people are subject to predestination. Both sides
hold that they are correct and backed by biblical proofs. Upon having a first look towards both
views it is immediately clear and evident that it is rather difficult to discern which of the two have
strong biblical support. Calvinismand Arminianismare held by all sorts of Christians from all

This means that without God granting us faith we cannot choose to have it and therefore not
receive a key to paradise. So Calvinism rose as a new way of viewing salvation in response
towards the Catholic Church s twisted and deformed teachings to gain money from the common
man. What does Calvinism teach exactly? According to David N. Steele and Curtis Thomas in
their article The Five Points of CALVINISM Defined, Defended, Documented Calvinism holds
that Salvation is accomplished by the almighty power of the Triune God. The Father chose a
people, the Son died for them, the Holy Spirit makes Christ s death effective by bringing the elect
to faith and repentance, thereby causing them to willingly obey the gospel. The entire process
(election, redemption, regeneration) is the work of God and is by grace alone. Thus God, not man,
determines who will be the recipients of the gift of salvation. Calvinism can be better understood
when taking a look at the five points of Calvinism commonly referred to as T.U.L.I.P, which stands
for Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and
Perseverance of the Saints (Slick The Five Points of Calvinism ). The first point, total depravity,
states that man is completely affected by sin. However, this does not mean that man is

  • 2. Diphtheria Research Paper Diphtheria is a highly contagious disease that causes inflammation in airway passages. Diphtheria also has a connection with the infection pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Diphtheria dates back to the early 1700 s, and was known for being a plague among children. Not until 1826, was diphtheria given it s name. In 1885, the idea for intubation was finally brought up by a physician by the name of Joseph O Dwyer. Many years later, a man by the name of Emil von Behring, stated that a mixture of both the diphtheria toxin and antitoxin produced an immunization. In 2009, it was declared that since 2004, there had not been one single case of diphtheria in the United States. The diseasehas almost disappeared in the United States now, but sadly there are still many cases of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Diphtheria is spread (transmitted) from person to person, usually through respiratory droplets, from coughing or sneezing. Rarely, spreading may occur from skin lesions (like an abnormal sore) or clothes that are contaminated with discharges from lesions (like a sore) of an infected person. ( Diphtheria : Causes and Transmission 1). Diphtheria used to be a widespread childhood disease, but because of advanced technology and medicine, it has become even more rare ( Diphtheria World of Microbiology 1). After 1988, all of the cases of diphtheria in America have been confirmed that the people who have it are immigrants or tourists from other countries ( Diphtheria World of Microbiology 1). People who have not been immunized may get diphtheria at any age. The disease is spread most often by droplets from the coughing or sneezing of an infected person or carrier. ( Diphtheria World of Microbiology 1). The largest outbreak of diphtheria was in the Soviet Union from 1990 1995 resulting in about 5,000 deaths. • 3. Women In Media Essay Women in Television, and what can be said. Skinny, blond, ditzy, annoying, un educated, easy, and considered a typical women. If you re a women and you hear these words, does it make you think of who you are, or your mother or sisters? I think not...but I do think about the people I see on television and in magazines or in movies. What I want to know is who is writing the scripts for some of the television shows that I watch. I would like to hope that it s not women putting these stereotypes on their fellow sisters . Television is so different today in so many ways than what it was when it first started to blossom. Cox seems to be to also be very much so like Aniston s character in the sense of physical perfection. Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) plays absolutely the most stereotypical female. She is a blond who doesn t understand anything...but it s a good laugh right? It seems to me that America finds it funny when we watch these blond women on t.v, the way they are portrayed makes it seem as though that s the way all women of that kind are. A friend, a very highly rated show, seems to be doing something right...and I can guaranty you that a lot of the viewers are women. I watch friends...but there are times that it just can t keep it on that channel due to the effect of stomach illness it has on me when Monica won t shut up and is ridiculously annoying. • 4. Cain Was The Firstborn Of Adam And Eve Essay Cain was the firstborn of Adam and Eve. In him were deposited all the desires of restoration of the original state of the man and mainly of the state of intimate communion with God the all powerful. Therefore, Cain shows himself to be a person who did not please God with his offerings, because his motivation was different from the motivation of his brother Abel, as he sought to present the best of his flock to the Lord as we can see at Genesis 4:3 5 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell . It happened at the end of a time Cain brought from the fruit of the earth an offering to the Lord; Abel, for his part, brought of the firstfruits of his flock and the fat thereof. The Lord of Abel and his offering were pleased; While Cain and his offering were not pleased. It is understood that Cain would have offered an offer thankfully and not voluntarily as was the case of Abel. This form of offering of Cain displeased the Lord, who came to pay attention to Abel s offering. Writing about the punishment God applied to Cain, which was intended to lead him to repentance, shows how much his heart was blacked out by sin and rebellion against the Creator. But nevertheless punishment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Commentary On The Book Blue Bloods By Melissa De La Cruz Where to begin? Well, to start things off, Blue Bloods is the first book in the Blue Blood Series written by Melissa de la Cruz. The series itself is realistic fiction as the setting in this series takes place in New York City. As for the main characters in this book, Schuyler Van Alen, a sophomore at a private school in New York City who has experienced several changes when she turned 15. Oliver Hazard Perry is a human that is assigned as a Human Conduit to Schuyler and was aware that Blue Bloods exist, despite being a mortal. Benjamin Jack Force is a Blue Blood and is described as the most popular at the school. His twin sister, Madeleine Mimi Force, is rather harsh against Schuyler. At first, it was just jealousy at first, but when Jack started to show interest, she begins to hate her for real. To start things off, everything... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the trouble I had to understand what s going on, I would recommend it to a very minimum number of people. From what I read, it has vampires, so anyone who enjoys novels with vampires would enjoy to read this novel. But I would also recommend this to people who would like realistic fantasy. It has a nice feeling to read a novel made up of fictional things while adding realistic places such as New York City. To my belief, the ideal readership Melissa is aiming for is for readers who like realistic fantasy. When you think about it, fictional beings in the realistic world is something interesting to read, at least for me. Fantasy has been an inspiration for me and I m sure others would feel the same as well. I wish it would ve been more easy for me to comprehend what s going on to truly enjoy it, but alas, it didn t for me. As for what to read next, I have been putting thought about reading a novel from a different series and from a different genre. If I truly want to enjoy reading more novels, I need to be able to read different books from different genres. I can t be picky on my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Alexander The Great, King Of Asia Alexander the Great, King of Asia, King of the Four Quarters of the World, King of Babylon, King of Macedonia, etc. Born in 356 B.C., he died in 323 from a sickness at age 32. In Alexander s short life he became one of the best military tacticians in the world. His military genius allowed him to create and rule an enormous Western empire in the ancient world. He was successful in all his military endeavors and his empire, stretching from Greece to India, shows that. He changed the course of history with all that he did. Without Alexander we wouldn t have the Alexandria Library and many other things. He created a new culture which was a combination of Greece and Persia cultures, new or improved war tactics, changed the way people thought and so much more. He may have had a short life, but that didn t stop him. He managed to do so many wonderful things that his legend and legacy still live on today. Early Life Alexander the Great, ruler of Macedonia, Babylon, Persia and most of Asia, was exceptional all throughout life. He was born in the summer of 356 B.C. in a town called Pella. He was of average height and had deep set, dark eyes and dark, curly hair. Alexander was the son of King Philip II of Macedonia and Queen Olympia, who was the daughter of the Molossian king Neoptolemus. He also had a sister a year younger than him named Cleopatra. • 7. How Did Lenin Gain Power The first two leaders of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin had very different methods in commanding their country. Differences can be seen in the way they achieved their political power and how they dealt with their political opponents. Similarities can be seen in the way that these men were unwilling to share their power. Vladimir Leninachieved his political power by rallying fellow Bolsheviks to seize government installations and storm the capital. The plan made Lenin the visible figurehead of the Bolsheviks and the new government that was put into place. While Lenin overtly planned his seizure of power, Joseph Stalinwas able to achieve his power behind the scenes. Stalin used position as general secretary of the... Of the delegates who attended the National Congress of the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) in 1934, fully 70 percent had been executed by the time of the National Congress in 1939 (pg. 90). Through this purge, Stalin solidified his control over the communist party and the country. Lenin differed by allowing his Bolshevik opponents to remain in their posts, but was mindful of their activities. He took action to prevent these opponents from ousting him form power. This action can be seen when Lenin, weary of his opponents turning to the Romanov family for leadership had the entire family executed. A similar characteristic that both of these leaders shared was their refusal to share power. This can be seen in Stalin s accumulation of powers as the general secretary, which lead to his complete control of the country. Lenin also maintained this trait as he actively tried to subvert the leftist that had opposed the coup before it had occurred. I think that if Lenin had lived another twenty years that the country may have had a completely different government in place. Lenin was able to guide the party through the civil car that solidified his power in the new government, but he had a lot of opponents with differing views. I think it is possible that there could have been another coup to try to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Massacre Of Israeli Delegates At The Summer Munich... The events of the past have a way of transforming themselves over time. Something that occurred mere minutes ago can evolve over the next few hours, and an event that seemed so straight forward many years past finds itself a new meaning within the greater context of the period. The same concept applies to a specific event a mere 45 years ago, namely the massacre of Israeli delegates at the summer Munich Olympics of 1972. This event is now portrayed in standard textbooks as being part of a larger event of the time period, one of the lingering effects of the Jordanian Civil War of 1971, an event that has been dubbed Black September in the history books. As a result of the efforts of the Jordanians placed against various Palestinian groups during the war, the Fatah, a militant Palestinian group and PFLP, another radical group, jointly created a terror group named after the conflict. The Black September Organization attempted to force revenge on both the Jordanian authority and the Israelis, who had occupied their lands in Palestine. The organization became known to assassinate Israelis abroad in an act of revenge (Smith). However, at the time of the Olympics, the world s reaction was not as cut and dry as it is today. In both the political and public worlds, the attitude was one of shock and horror. The Secretary General of the United Nations said that while the event was, on its own, one that was terrible, it was made worse by infringing on the idea that the Olympic Games ... • 9. Niccolo Machiavelli s The Qualities Of The Prince And Lao... Government: A Profound Leader Since the being of time, humans have sought out law, or government. Governments have been set in place all throughout the world to try to maintain peace and order. As easy as it sounds, governments can be demolished without the right leader. However, that is the catch, what makes a good leader? Niccolo Machiavelli s The Qualities of the Prince and Lao Tzu s Tao te Ching gives some ideas on how a leader should control their government. Although Machiavelli s and Lao Tzu s ideas do not quite go hand and hand, there are some similarities. They both spoke similarly on how people should feel about their leader. Lao Tzu views one of the best qualities of a leader is being loved by his people. On the other hand, Machiavelli believes the best is to be loved and feared, but sense he thinks that is impossible he had rather just be feared. Machiavelli and Lao Tzu are more opposite than alike. According to Machiavelli, war should be a profession of a prince. He suggested a prince to think about war all the time and know the surroundings constantly. However, Lao Tzu suggests a leader not to force war on anyone because the outcome will result in revenge and not to waste time preparing for war. Also, they had different views on what to do with their money. Machiavelli insisted on saving his income for preparation of war, whereas Lao Tzu believed in sharing his money throughout the people. Triginhall Mrs. Teacher Honors English 10 18 November 2012 Response to Literature The free bird thinks of another breeze....a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams... The two literary works I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird can be seen as mockingbirds that have flown over fields of prejudice and repeat what they have seen for all to hear. Jem Finch, a young boy and lawyer s son from To Kill a Mockingbird clearly symbolizes a mockingbird because of his youth and innocence, and because of his innocence he cannot fully understand the racism in the story. While Jem was a young boy he acted very similar to the free bird in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. He lived life to its fullest never stopping to think of the racism he was being shielded from. The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own. (Angelou, 14 18) In this stanza of the poem you can infer that the free bird is very happy with life and never thinks of anything upsetting. The upsetting things in this instance would be the racism in the story; the free bird never stops to think about the caged bird. As the summer progressed, so did our game. (Lee, pg. 52) When Jem and his sister Scout meet Dill, a boy in their neighbor s yard, they get to know him and play with him. They are always thinking of improving their game, living life to its fullest as much as a kid can. When they are playing said game, Jem never stops to think about the racism in the world and is shielded from it by the fun of being a kid. Concluding that they are similar characters because both Jem and the free bird enjoy their lives. Another reason why the free bird and Jem , the symbol of a mockingbird are similar is they are both able to do what they please. • 16. Maximum Phonational Frequency Range Case Studies Maximum Phonational Frequency Range (MPFR) is described as the maximum range of phonation between a client s lowest modal/chest register tone and highest loft tone/falsetto register. The MPFR is typically determined by using a pitch matching procedure. Ms. Noid will be instructed to sustain a vowel (i.e. /a/) matching the pitch of a presented tone (i.e. sine wave). She will start phonation at a comfortable frequencylevel, and will incrementally increase her frequency range production, until she can no longer sustain phonation. Then, Ms. Noid will be instructed to incrementally decrease her frequency range until her modal phonation can no longer be sustained. The rationale for using an MPFR measure is to explore the physical condition of the phonatory mechanism. Furthermore, it is a way to quantify the client s frequency variability, measured through an entire range of frequencies (i.e. highest to lowest), which are produced with maximal effort. ... Ms. Noid will have a constrained phonational frequency range of approximately 1 2 octaves, reflecting a physiological limitation and impaired vocal mechanism, due to a unilateral vocal fold paralysis. It is a measurement of cycle to cycle variability in fundamental frequency. Typically, results are acquired from a three second mid segment sample of a sustained phonation task, avoiding phonatory onset and offset. Fundamental frequency and intensity values should be specified since they vary, affecting the Frequency Perturbation (jitter) values. Frequent establishment of the portrayal of the female figure furthers Stowe s pro domesticity stance and the woman s ability to indirectly undermine the structure of slavery. These female/male comparisons illustrate Stowe s faith in the maternal role and the power that women possess. To elucidate the aforementioned ability of the maternal figure it must be known that the ideal nature of this influence is an indirect one. Rather than direct action from the women, Stowe emphasizes the ability of women to exert a positive moral influence over the men around her. Moral guidance from the women, then, may serve to subtly sway the actions of men, who can transform societal structure. An example of said notion in action is found in the aforementioned Mrs. Byrd berating her husband for his support of the Fugitive Slave Act. Black Colleges And Universities ( Hbcus ) Essay Introduction Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before 1964. As amended by The Higher Education Act of 1965, a part B institution refers to any Historically Black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation. Though in 1837 Cheyne University of Pennsylvania and 1854 Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) had been established for Black education, Black Colleges and Universities became recognized by the United States Government in the 1890 s. The second Morrill Land Grant Act specified that states using federal higher education funds must provide an education to Black students, either by opening the doors of their public universities to those of African descent, or by establishing schools specifically to serve them. Integration for white public and private institutions was completely out of the question due to the substantial racial divide within the United States so, many Southern states created a completely separate set of institutions serving Blacks. This poem offers an amazing juxtaposition of dramatic poetic forms, narrative, and lyric (Guth Rico). The story is most often simple but with the last line, they transcend the restriction of place and cover universal plight. Most often the characters of the people are memorable only due to fact that they are trying to survive the trials and tribulations of daily living. For example, in the poem, The Boy Died in My Alley , the author narrates an incident when a black boy is murdered in her back alley and the policeman asks her whether she has heard the shot. As she was passionate about the bad experiences of black community in the United States, her poetryis mainly about their plight in the society (Guth Rico). The main focus of the poem, The Boy Died in My Alley is to study and analyze the reasons behind the violence that is associated with African American children who live on the street. Like her other poems, the story of the poem, The Boy Died in My Alley is very simple, but the narrator gradually narrows down the incident described in the poem to the general plight of the black children who live on the street. Not only did they kill Fred Hampton, but they killed Mark Clark. Mark Clark was another leader of the Black Panthers during the time, and he just so happened to be in Hampton s apartment with him the night of the raid. This was not justified because Hampton had done nothing to harm the police officers that night. It was already horrible enough that they decided to raid his home, but then killing him took it over the edge. If they were attacked by Fred Hampton that would be a more sufficient reason as to why the police officers felt like they had to shoot him. Although, the Black Panthers were known for killing cops and revolutionary politics, but unless Fred Hampton was in the act of trying to kill a cop, there is no reason why he had to be killed. By comparing and contrasting the multiple facets of both themes, only then can one truly realize the thought behind each and every word is the novel. There comes a time in all of our lives where we make a decision in a certain situation to do the right thing even if we are scared of the consequence. I remember when I was in seventh grade I had this friend, Amanda, that would get picked on by this bigger girl. Now, I know it is not up to me to fight battles for others but bullyingis wrong. Amanda did not acknowledge this girl at all, and usually the girl would just say mean things but one day it escalated. I guess the girl was tired of being ignored so she decided to make a scene in front of everyone, and i was tired of my friend not wanting to come to school because of this. I decided it was time to do something. This girl was following Amanda in the hallway with her finger pointed and her mouth scolding and everyone watching. I politely said, hey Jess, hows your day? Are you ok? I do not think Amanda wants you in her face! She replies, she looks like she wants me in her face. She slides a little closer to Amanda who is stuck in the corner. So I slide in between them and let it be known that I was not moving and that she needed to leave Amanda alone. Starting today we are officially all friends and friends do not treat people this way. Gainsborough, A Story of a Painter and an Era Essay Gainsborough, A Story of a Painter and an Era To be able to appraise the originality of eighteenth century English art, one must recognize its importance in history. A great painter to research is Thomas Gainsborough. His artwork was an important aspect of the art community of the middle seventeen hundreds. His paintings seem to bring brightness and color to a period in art that needed his creative boost. His combination of portrait paintings along with beautiful landscapes was not recognized in his time, but would be recognized as remarkable later in history. He was fond of drawing trees grass and other objects that would not be found in an indoor studio. He was not the first to draw backgrounds in his paintings; many have done this before him. His task was to paint a background that was just as important as the subjects do but not distract either. By painting outdoors, his paintings became much more colorful that most paintings of the past (Woodall 32). Brighter paintings were much improvement over the paintings of the past. They were very eye appealing and much more noticeable. Gainsborough s untrained painter s eye did not effect the outcome of his paintings; he was painting from his heart. He painted whatever his eyes saw; in most cases the outcome of his paintings were a perfect mix of background and foreground. People began to start noticing his artwork even though he did not have a degree or formal education in art; this was very promising to the young painter. His work slowly moved up into the great artwork of the city. His name was becoming known all around. He can begin his career with the bright colors he added to the scenery of the painting. One superb example of where the colors and scenery effected a painting is in the painting Mr. and Mrs. Andrews. In my first examination of the painting, many questions were brought up. Upon an inspection of the General Prologue s description of the Knyght, I found that clothing is a very signifcant part of the Knyght s Tale. Chaucer probably felt as if he was about to be bound by the fact that he was borrowing from another tale (from Boccaccio s Il Teseida delle nozze d Emilia), and that he would have to change it to make it his own. The characters that he uses are bound by literary stereotypes and narrative function which they fulfil rather than transcend or reject. (Finlayson 147). • 44. Damnation Conflict Analysis The movie Damnation showed conflict in values by groups such as the Elwha tribe, people who worked at the dam, and environmentalists. These groups all had their reasons for why the dam should be taken down or not. In this paper I will argue that the values held by the different groups involved in the conflict over these dams have shaped those conflicts: first, the Elwha tribe need abundant resources and have a spiritual heritage to follow: second, the dam workers need their jobs to support their families and themselves: third, environmentalists encourage the use of hydroelectricityand the government use the dams as a renewable source of energy and finally, the environmentalists who believed hatchery fish is an inefficient way of bringing abundant resources to the river. As you can see the values held by these groups have shaped those conflicts on why the dam should be either removed or not. Firstly, the values held by the Elwha tribe shaped the conflict over these dams because they needed abundant resources in order to follow their traditions. Certain fishes such as sockeye salmon were not able to get upstream because of the dam; moreover, this resulted in sockeye salmons not being able to migrate and have offspring. The basic facts of the movie from the start to the finish concern events about the places, the time, and the practices that took place during the slave era in detail. Mmr Vaccine Can Cause Autism Spectrum Disorder Essay It s more than likely you ve never had measles, mumps or rubella (MMR), all serious viral infections, In the 19th and early 20th centuries, these illnesses struck hundreds of thousands of people in the United States each year, mostly children, and tens of thousands of people died (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases 2). These diseases, today, have mostly been eradicated by the use of vaccinations. Although vaccines are said to reduce the chance of receiving certain infections or diseases, controversial ideas believe that the MMR vaccinecan cause autism spectrum disorder. Autism is a developmental disorder that impairs communication and interaction; it has no confirmed cause. Usually, a child begins to show signs of autism around 12 to 18 months, which is also the same age when a child receives the MMR vaccine. Because of this correlation, apprehensive parents are choosing to not vaccinate their children. Now, an increasing amount of children are receiving certain diseases that have been dormant in the United States for years. Nervous parents should educate themselves about the risks of vaccines, but should also know that the consequences of not vaccinating outweigh the minor side effects. Their message echoed together. Stay away from these things. These three words together compile a concept common and criticized in the church. Even the Bible referenced this concept called worldliness. Christians debated it. Gray areas encircled the concept. Regardless, worldliness endangered the Christian with enticements but strengthened them in Christ. Worldliness, a synonym of materialism, meant an interest in, concern with, or devotion to things of this world as especially as opposed to a future stage of existence. The worldly minded person focused on life s pleasures whether good or evil. The focus of worldliness encircled their passions and pleasures before them in the moment. I John 2:16 defined what encompassed the world as those things which leave God out of the picture. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Therefore the term world referenced fleshly lusts, eyes of lust, and pride. Anything that straggled away from God s principles could be defined as worldliness.
