literary works I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and Harper Lee s To Kill a
Mockingbird can be seen as mockingbirds that have flown over fields of prejudice and repeat what
they have seen for all to hear. Jem Finch, a young boy and lawyer s son from To Kill a Mockingbird
clearly symbolizes a mockingbird because of his youth and innocence, and because of his
innocence he cannot fully understand the racism in the story. Jem also has many similarities to the

While Jem was a young boy he acted very similar to the free bird in I Know Why the Caged Bird

Bravery, a simple word that means so much. To speak up, even when it would be easier to be
quiet. There comes a time in all of our lives where we make a decision in a certain situation to do
the right thing even if we are scared of the consequence. I remember when I was in seventh grade I
had this friend, Amanda, that would get picked on by this bigger girl. Now, I know it is not up to me
to fight battles for others but bullyingis wrong. Amanda did not acknowledge this girl at all, and
usually the girl would just say mean things but one day it escalated. I guess the girl was tired of
being ignored so she decided to make a scene in front of everyone, and i was tired of my friend not
wanting to come to school because of this.
I decided it was time to do something. This girl was following Amanda in the hallway with her
finger pointed and her mouth scolding and everyone watching. I politely said, hey Jess, hows
your day? Are you ok? I do not think Amanda wants you in her face! She replies, she looks like
she wants me in her face. She slides a little closer to Amanda who is stuck in the corner. So I
slide in between them and let it be known that I was not moving and that she needed to leave

The movie Damnation showed conflict in values by groups such as the Elwha tribe, people who
worked at the dam, and environmentalists. These groups all had their reasons for why the dam
should be taken down or not. In this paper I will argue that the values held by the different groups
involved in the conflict over these dams have shaped those conflicts: first, the Elwha tribe need
abundant resources and have a spiritual heritage to follow: second, the dam workers need their jobs
to support their families and themselves: third, environmentalists encourage the use of
hydroelectricityand the government use the dams as a renewable source of energy and finally, the
environmentalists who believed hatchery fish is an inefficient way of bringing abundant resources
