Development Of The New Waterfront
2. History Of The Place (400 Words)
Wellingtons land surface became scarce in 1857 with little space for urbanization to occur.
Therefore the idea of reclaiming land was portrayed through the development of Wellington. By the
19th century the entire 1840 s shoreline had disappeared from sight, which was represented with
rapid urbanization along the waterfront with growth in skyscrapers and the inner city. (Wellington
City Council) With rapid development in Wellington towards the mid 1900 s, the additions of
motorways along with the multi lane roads through the city were introduced. Additionally in 1989,
The Wellington Harbour Board merged into the Wellington City Council and for the first time since
1880, the City had direct control over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore with the addition of adding a significant cultural feature to the project, it helps to tell a
story of exploring the early arrivals of nations. This was significantly seen with the addition of
Maori artist Paratene Matchitt to push the idea further through his sculptural profession within the
bridge. This sculptural aspect links back to the heritage of the land as it was once completely
covered by water but now it is a significant feature, which develops its distinct inner meaning. It is
a point of arrival, a gateway between the distinct reclaims of Wellington harbour and Wellington
city (Gray 28 30).
3. Current Physical Location (200 Words + 400 Words)
Rewi Thompson (of Ngäti Raukawa descent) was born and raised in Wellington and began his
initial carrier in engineering. Thompson worked at Structon Group as a structural draught person
before transferring to Structon s architecture department. Thompson eventually left Structon s to
study architecture at the University of Auckland, where Thompson later gained a job with Structon
in Auckland after gaining his degree. After gaining his architecture registration through working,
Thompson established his own practice in 1983. Thompson rose to prominence very quickly
through his architecture and states his work as Focusing on two things land and people (REWI

Effects of Concentration on Enzymatic Activity of Salivary Amylase
Rose Cruz
Arapahoe Community College
The purpose of this lab was to see if there was a relationship in the amount of concentration of
salivary amylase to the amount of time it took to break down starch. To determine if varying
concentrations affected the reaction time of the breakdown of starch, we used 4 different dilutions of
salivary amylase and used 2 controls (positive/negative). Amylase is an enzyme responsible for
breaking down starch into sugars. It is hypothesized that a lower concentration of amylase would
cause the breakdown of starch to take a longer period of time or a slower reaction rate as opposed
to a higher concentration of amylase. The results of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the concentration of the reactant (substrate) changes and is increased while the enzyme
concentration stays the same, the higher the concentration, the lower the reaction rate will be for
the enzyme to break down the increased amount of reactant (Factors affecting Enzyme Activity,
n.d.). The same applies for if the concentration of enzyme changes and is increased while other
factors stay the same. The higher the concentration of enzyme, the higher the reaction rate will be
as the enzyme breaks down the reactant. In this experiment concentration affects the enzymatic
activity increasing or decreasing the amount of concentration of amylase in a solution (Factors
affecting Enzyme Activity, n.d.). If there is more concentration of enzyme there are more active
sites available for a reaction to occur (Phenix, n.d.). To see the reaction and breakdown of starch
we used Lugol s Iodine Reagent since it turns black in the presence of starch (Bauer and Norman,
2015, p. 92). We placed mixtures of the amylase and starch solutions in each of the wells
containing Lugol s Iodine at 30 second intervals. Depending on what solution was used and how the
amylase broke down the starch, the color change was noted over time. Due to the information about
how concentration affects the reaction rate of an enzyme and substrate, we figured that a lower
concentration of amylase would cause a slower reaction rate meaning that with a

Representation Of Indian Literature And Film
Representation of Maori in New Zealand narratives; literature and film, has been a criticised
problem by Maori and academics for centuries. I will explore the representation of Maori in film
and literature through a mana wahine context, directed by leading national and international
mana wahine scholars. My aim is to shed light on issues that surround Maori representation and
issues within the Maori community. My capstone project aims to give Maori a strong, self
affirming voice. I want to reclaim my identity and empower other Maori through my personal
account of being Maori in a low socio economic suburb. I believe that representations of Maori are
stereotypical, derogatory, and false. Therefore, these images reflect us to the wider community in
vast negative lights. Most importantly, these deceitful depictions negatively affect views Maori
have of themselves. Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith is a pioneer of Kaupapa Maori Research. I
will utilize her second edition of her book Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous
peoples(Smith 2012) as a framework. I will compare and contrast what Smith has said in relation
to other indigenous women academic s discourse of race and gender such as Bell Hooks, Leonie
Pihama, and myself. Decolonizing Methodologies is an analytical investigation of the role Western
academic research contributed to the process of colonization of indigenous peoples, specifically
Maori. It also explores intersections of imperialism and history;

The Great Depression By Albert Ellis
Albert Ellis was one of the most influential psychologists in American history, who lived between
September 27, 1913 and July 24, 2007. In junior high, Ellis had his sights set to become a great
novelist. His original plan was to study accounting in high school and college, retire around the
age of 30, and write without having to worry about finances. Unfortunately, the Great Depression
stopped Ellis from furthering his dream. However, he managed to finish college with a degree
in Business Administration from the City University of New York in 1934. In Ellis spare time,
he wrote short stories, plays, comics, essays, and novels. At the age of 28, he had written over
two dozen manuscripts, but he could not get them published. It was then Ellis realized that his
future did not involve being a novelist Ellis decided to start a part time private practice for sex and
family therapy after he was awarded his master s degree in 1943. By the time he was awarded a
doctorate from Columbia in 1947, Ellis truly believed that psychoanalysiswas the best form of
therapy. He quickly decided that he wanted to manage training analysis. Sadly, none of the psycho
analytic institutes would not accept anyone without M.D. s, so Ellis had some trouble finding a
group to work with. None the less, Albert found a group that agreed to work with him. In a few
years time, Ellis had successfully completed a full psychoanalysis and began to practice classical
psychoanalysis.

The Effect of Enzymes on Hydrogen Peroxide Decomposition
What is the function of enzymes in a living system?
Enzymes speed up metabolic reactions necessary for life. Without them certain vital processes
would not take place and the body would be unable to function.
Difference enzymes work better under different conditions. Where in a human body might it be
beneficial to have enzymes work in very acidic environments?
In areas, like the stomach, that have a pH of two would benefit by having enzymes that function
well in acidic environments. An example of such an enzyme is pepsin.
There is a large amount of catalase found in a human liver. Does the liver break down more

Potassium permanganate used to titrate and determine the amount of decomposed hydrogen
peroxide.
Sulfuric acid was used to stop the reaction with catalase and hydrogen peroxide. It denatured the
enzyme (catalase) and halted the reaction so the amount of hydrogen peroxide decomposed could
be measured.
Before performing part D of the experiment, why was it necessary to establish a baseline?
The baseline is a control and shows the amount of decomposed hydrogen peroxide in the initial
sample.
You may have observed the reaction of naturally occurring catalase in tissue from either liver of
potato. Design an experiment to determine if the amount of catalase varies from tissue to tissue
(e.g. 200 g of liver compared to 200 g of potato).
Put the 100 g of potato in 1 petri dish and 100 g of liver in another petri dish. Then put equal
amounts of hydrogen peroxide for an equal period of time in both dishes. Drain the dishes and
titrate them with potassium permanganate simultaneously. The numbers can now be compared
using the steps in the sample calculation above in the lab report. In order to compare perform a
potassium permanganate titration on pure hydrogen peroxide.
Of the thousands of enzymes known, there is a family of enzymes called proteases that catalyze a
reaction of breaking down proteins. What do you think would happen if you added a protease to
your sample of catalase before proceeding with your experiment?
The catalase would be broken

Comparing The Wife s Lament And The Seafarer
In the Anglo Saxon epic poems The Wife s Lament , The Wanderer , and The Seafarer , the authors
make their poetry much more interesting and enjoyable by inserting literary devices that add
meaning and cohesiveness to each line. Each poem contains multiple literary devices such as
kennings, caesuras, and imagery. These tools work together in order to add mood and transparency
to the poetry.
The Wife s Lament is a poem that was translated by Ann Standford, and it uses numerous literary
devices to convey the pains and emotions being felt by the narrator, an exiled wife. The author of
the poem uses a metaphor to compare the cave the wife has moved into to an empty hall: under an
oak treein this den in the earth. / Ancient this eath hall. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kennedy, utilizes literary devices to make the plot clear and organized, while also adding imagery
to the poem. The first example of this is the flashback used in the first paragraph: Homeless and
helpless he fled from fate / Thus saith the wanderermindful of misery, / Grievous disasters, and
death of kin (Kennedy 5 7). This flashback provides background information for the readers that
is necessary to understand what is happening through the rest of the poem. The next literary
device appears in the second stanza of the poem: Over wintry seas, seeking a gold lord (Kennedy
23). Gold lord is a kenning in this line, and it is meant to point out the fact that the wanderer is
hoping that his life will return to how it was before; however, it is too unrealistic, just as finding
a gold lord or perfect king would be impossible. Alliteration is used to highlight the wanderer s
feelings during his time of exile: Fettered my feelings, far from my kin, / Homeless and hapless
(Kennedy 19 20). By using alliteration only for certain phrases, the author makes those phrases
stand out to the reader. These particular lines were important because they portrayed the narrator s
emotion and establish the uneasy mood in the

Types Of Whole Life Insurance
Types of Whole Life Insurance
As I mentioned a few paragraphs ago, I m using whole life as a blanket term for an entire
category of insurance products, which some agents refer to as permanent life or universal life. I
like the term whole because it fits well with my approach to investing, which is, if I may be
permitted the phrase, holistic. I m concerned with all of you your mind, your emotions, and your
overall state of being. In the following section, I ll review the fundamental characteristics of this
class of insurance products, then briefly discuss some of the variations therein.
Basic Facets of Whole Life Insurance:
Fixed Premiums: With some notable exceptions, your premium is set when you buy the policy, and
will not change ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Participating and Participating Whole Life: Participating and Participating Whole Life policies are
special types of permanent life insurance policies wherein the policy holder is paid a regular
dividend from the insurance company, similar to that which a stockholder might receive. These
dividends can be used to pay policy premiums, they can be redirected into the investment portion
of the policy, or they can simply be kept the policy holder decides how he or she wants to use
them. Participating and Participating Whole Life policies are generally less complex than universal
policies, since the premiums are almost always fixed. With variable and participating policies, the
death benefit may grow or shrink, but there is almost always a guaranteed minimum payout.
TIP: The ins and outs of universal and whole plans are very complex, and need no, MUST be
discussed with a qualified life insurance agent.
Comparison of Investments
By now I hope you re convinced about the value of whole life insurance as investment tool. The
proper use of a whole life policy can put you on a path to financial security and wealth creation.
But in case you aren t convinced yet, I ll take a moment to compare an investment in a whole life
policy with other investments. I m going to keep it simple, though. I don t want to throw a bunch of
numbers at you and talk about

Pink Floyd Research Paper
Today (March 6) is the birthday of legendary Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. Gilmour
replaced founding member Syd Barrett on guitar after Barrett left the band due to mental illness
exacerbated by excessive psychedelic drug use.
The band went on to become one of the most phenomenally successful groups in history, selling
over 250 million albums world wide.
Though Gilmour is mum when it comes to the band s personal drug usage, the music of Pink Floyd
remains heavily drenched in psychedelic overtones.
In celebration of David GIlmour s birthday, we present to you the 10 most psychedelic Pink Floyd
songs.

A personal favorite of mine, Remember A Day evokes imagery like a sonic painting, rendered by
the likes of someone such as Salvador Dali.
Bike is a Syd Barrett masterpiece which appears on The Piper At the Gates of Dawn (1967).
Ostensibly written for Syd s then girlfriend Jenny Spires, we take a quixotic notion that the song
references, if not deliberately, then synchronistically, the first self administered dose of LSD.
In 1943, inventor of LSD Albert Hoffman intentionally ingested 250 micrograms of LSD to
determine its effects. He subsequently took a bicycle ride during which he succumbed to the drugs
effects causing him to feel anxiety, a sense of going insane, and the belief that his neighbor was a
malevolent witch.
The events of this first LSD trip have come to be known as Bicycle Day.

The Successful Failure Of NASA
A few decades ago, going to the space seemed impossible to man but after many technological
advances, man found a way to get to the space. NASA, NASA primary has improved its space
mission shuttles and on each one, they were getting better and gaining confidence about sending
shuttles to outer space until the thirteenth mission to space, also known as the Successful Failure,
made them realize that going to space is a risk, even with the most advanced technology.
Before NASA started sending astronauts to space, they first sent a chimpanzee because of all the
doubts that they had about humans being able to resist the extreme conditions on space. After the
chimpanzee came without problem from space; NASA started to plan the first manned mission to
space, while planning it they had to decide which pilot they were going to send. ... Show more

The Irony of Education in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
The power of education in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is one of the most important
themes in the entire work, but it is not a theme with a consistent meaning. Although Frederick
Douglass understands that the only path to freedom, both for himself and fellow slaves, is through
learning to read, write, and have an educational base to build on, he is at the same time disgusted
with education because it causes him to understand the full extent of the horrors of slavery. At one
point, he states, It [education] opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but offered no ladder upon ...

It proved to be true and is played out as Douglass finally acts out violently. It is by far in the best
interest of the slave owner to keep the slaves ignorant of concepts of freedom or education
because it might not only make them wistful, and thoughtful, but by proxy, less useful to them as
slaves. In order to keep slavery as a stable institution, it was important for many of the slave
owners in the text to make educating a slave something that could be punished. Well meaning
slave owners were heavily criticized for assisting a slave in his or her education and the fact that it
was illegal to teach a slave to read indicates the danger the white slave owning establishment sees as
inherent to education. In other words, by their fierce protection of the practices of education, the
slave owners were admitting that through education there is some kind of freedom, some way of
circumventing their absolute power.
Frederick Douglass became the most successful abolitionist who changed America s views of
slavery through his writings and actions. Frederick Douglass had many achievements throughout
his life. His Life as a slave had a great impact on his writings. His great oratory skills left the
largest impact on Civil War time period literature. Overall, he was the best black speaker and writer
ever. Illiteracy was an instrumental tool used to deprive slaves in an attempt to keep them ignorant

Nick s Love for the Gatsby in The Great Gatsby
During the 1920 s American culture was centered around status and wealth, especially in the
east, in hopes of living the true American dream . Although most people became shallow, empty,
and careless in their paths to wealth, often hurting those who have less then them, and making
them pay the consequences of their immoral actions. But Jay Gatsby was unlike every other
hollow person in the East, because he had something to live for, fight for, and dream for; Daisy

the drive to accomplish it. Gatsby restores Nicks faith in the people of the 1920 s by showing
him that not everyone is shallow and selfish, and that in order to live the American dream, hope
and determination can not be lost. Nick s love for Gatsby became more and more apparent

Descriptive Essay About A Friend
I see the school in the distance and quickly head towards the entrance, to be greeted by my one
and only friend; Ashley James. More like the only person in the whole world who actually talks to
me out of choice. Well, at least without ulterior motives. At first people used to crowd around me,
being the daughter of the Beta couple meant that there was a huge chance that I d be powerful and
definitely loaded.
After they found out I was an Omega they disappeared and Elena became the better/popular sister.
After that some people still crowded me in hopes that Elena would noticed them through me but
soon enough they realized her hatred for me and left. Funny how people change and judge you just
because of your position in the world and not you, for just being you.
Ashley is also one of the prettiest girls in school, with ginger hair that reaches down to her hips
and hazel eyes that are always full of cheer and happiness. I feel lucky to have her as a friend, even
if our personalities and tastes are vastly different.
While she likes to go out to parties and hang out with friends, I like to stay home and read. She
also goes shopping a lot, hence her fashionable outfit. Today she s wearing a ivory flower lace

Motivation, Motivation And Intrinsic Motivation
With highly developed science nowadays, people still not quite understand how we motivate, and
what actually support us to attain our dream in daily life. Although huge numbers of scientists keep
researching on how motivation works in our brain, we cannot make a conclusion about the truth of
the motivation in the past century. Luckily, Daniel Pink announces his latest results, The Puzzle of
Motivation, on TED in 2009, which gives us a brand new idea about our motivation and how we
could improve us by learning his method. In this essay, I will illustrates the main point of Daniel
Pink, the evidence given in his speech, also the benefits I get from his idea which increase my
self motivation and helps me improve my study experience. According to The Puzzle of
Motivation , the speech given by Daniel Pink (2009) on TED, Pink demonstrates idea that our
motivation has many different methods, which well known as extrinsic motivation and intrinsic
motivation. But it also could have even more complex motivation methods, such as extrinsic and
intrinsic combined motivation, depends on different tasks. Reward could give us positive
motivation and improve us work efficiency, however, it is limited on easy job, and people given
a clearly direction on how to complete the mission. For creative and complex task, rewards can
narrow our views, or even harm. Based on the experiment done by Sam Glucksberg, professor in

Fluoxetine Research Paper
Fluoxetine is also known as Prozac, common antidepressant drug (1). It works as selective,
competitive reversible antagonist of serotonin receptor that prevent reuptake of serotonin from
synapse (2). Due to selectivity, little effect on other neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and
noradrenaline. It increase the concentration of serotonin at the synapse and serotonergic neuronal
transmission strength, and it triggers negative feedback loop of serotonin, which reduce the
conversion of tryptophan to serotonin (3). Fluoxetine does not display species difference, but effect

30mg did not affect the elimination or area under the curve (AUC) of diazepam 10mg, tolbutamide

the elimination of diazepam, but physiological responses to diazepam were unaffected (3). Also,
fluoxetine might have enhanced the toxic effects of other drugs, such as, cocaine because of its
weak pro arrhythmogenic properties (10). Therefore, the concentration of fluoxetine and
norfluoxetine is important.
The concentration could be altered due to level and activation of CYP450. Fluoxetine is substrate
of CYP2D6 and CYP2C9, and potent inhibitor of CYP2D6, and moderate inhibitor of CYP2C9,

Igbo Fear
Achebe uses the Ibo fear of white society to prove how fear can tear apart a society, by causing
individual submission and destruction. The Ibo had heard myths about the white men which lead
to their initial fear. The quote But I am greatly afraid. We have heard stories about white men who
made the powerful guns and strong drinks and took slaves across the seas, but no one thought the
stories were true. was Okonkwo s friend Obierika discussing the fear that he now had of the white
men, after learning stories about their practices. This illustrates how fear can lead to the crumbling
of society because when the Ibo fear the white men and the uncertain myths they have heard about
them, it leads to submission through fear of a superior power.

Slavery And The United States
In modern society, people often try for minority groups to feel equal to majorities, however, when
slavery existed, blacks were undermined and denied many freedoms entitled to them under the
Constitution. There were many topics argued about, but slavery caused the most dispute within
the country. In the 1850 s, the pro slavery South and the anti slavery North collided when the case
of Dred Scott, a black slave who attempted to gain liberation, was brought to court. The North and
South had vastly different views on the subject of slavery, Scott had resided in the free state of
Illinois with his master, illegally, after being taken from the slave state of Missouri. His residency

Because he had been held as a slave illegally, and ultimately denied the nullification of his status, he
was therefore entitled to petition his liberation and gain freedom.
Based on the slavery laws in Illinois where he resided, Dred Scott should have been liberated as
he had legal standing to file a lawsuit against the government. His freedoms had been denied and
when he was held illegally as a slave in the state of Illinois, these facts were not acknowledged
when he proposed his freedoms, and therefore, had every right to petition his liberation. Debate of
the constitutionality of The Missouri Compromise caused controversy within the Dred Scott case.
The Missouri Compromise came about in 1818, when Missouri petitioned to become a slave
state. At the time, there were 22 states, 11 slave and 11 non slave states; there was balance of
representation in senate. The house of representatives, however, proposed an amendment that
would ban the importation of slaves, and eventually all slavery. This bill was passed, and then
moved on to senate where a modified version was passed that did not contain any restrictions on
slavery. The house refused to accept the modifications made, and the bill was never passed. In
1819, Maine petitions for acceptance into the union but as a free state. When both petitions passed,
Missouri was then reconsidered. Slavery

Environmental Policy Of Vietnam s National Parks
Vietnam is home to 10% of the world s mammal, bird, and fish species, and over 40% of local
plant species are endemic (IUCN, 1999). However, accelerated deforestation, habitat loss and
illegal poaching (TRAFFIC, 2005) has led to the rapid depletion of endangered animals, such that
Vietnam has become one of 10 countries suffering from a remarkable biodiversityreduction (VNN,
1999). As such, biodiversity conservation has become an important policy device in Vietnam s
environmental sector (Zingerli, 2005). Conservation practices and priorities have changed over
time in response to changing societal needs (Vasseur Hart, 2002). Likewise, Vietnam has taken
various approaches to conservation since its 1986 renovation policy of doi moi. In this essay, we
will be reviewing the effectiveness of current approaches of a community based approach to
conservation in resettlement projects conducted in Vietnam s national parks.
Community based Conservation
Community based conservation refers to turning more human beings into conservationist (Robert et
al., 2012) such that locals can form networks with each other, community based organisation, Non
Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and government agencies for the conservation of biodiversity
and ecosystems (Robert et al., 2012). It creates a stake for local communities in conserving
resources (Brown, 1998) such that the interests of conservation and development can be
simultaneously achieved (Berkes, 2004).

Five Variants Of Christianity
The traditional beliefs that are traditionally associated with Christianity are the founded from their
sacred text, the bible. Which is believed to be divinely inspired and authoritative. This is going to
focus on the major five variants of Christianity. The five major variants are: Orthodox, Roman
Catholic, Anglican, Protestant and last but not the least by far, Pentecostal.
The principle beliefs can be broken down into 5 points which are: The Divinity and Humanity of
Jesus Christ, the Death and Resurrection of Christ, Nature of God and the Trinity, Revelation and
Salvation.
The Divinity and Humanity of Jesus Christ refers to the statement that Jesus was fully human and
fully God. This statement can vary largely for the major variants. Orthodox ... Show more content

However, some of the more liberal churches take a different approach and discard different pieces
of the Bible which they do not think are inspired by God, they think that the Bible is flawed with
human imperfection.
Salvation is believed by all the major variants of Christianity. Pentecostals believe in an afterlife
and that you can only enter through belief in Jesus. They believe that there is heaven and hell and
people will be divided up in the end times.
Protestants and Catholics have a similar belief about salvation. They both believe that they are
saved by God s grace alone. However, the difference between Protestants and Catholics is how they
respond to God s grace.
The protestant belief is that they are saved by faith alone. Some Protestants even say that there is
nothing one can do to earn a spot in heaven. All you have to do is accept Jesus Christ into your
soul as your personal lord and saviour and you are saved. Works are not mentioned in this, some
denominations say, once saved always

Overall, it is clear osCommerce has a huge support network and community to help you out in
customizing and troubleshooting your website. If you have website or plugin problems, there
will definitely be at least a few people to help solve them. The downside to osCommerce is that
it is 15 years old, the keyword here being old . This means that the platform does not have as
much capabilities or capacity as newer options. It is also not as scalable, and lack features that you
can find in newer platforms.
5.Zen Cart
If you have a decent number of products to offer on your ecommerce site, then Zen Cart is
probably one of your best options for an ecommerce platform. One of its biggest advantages is
its product management system. You can manage and control inventory, make specials and
sales and do much more with ease. But the system also tends to be slow if you add several new
products, so it is not that good an option if you have a huge volume of products. Zen Cart is also
not the best looking platforms out of the box. You can work on it to make it more presentable,
with lots of templates on offer. If you are good at coding, there is a lot more you can do. But if you
want something that looks good right off the bat, you may be disappointed when you open Zen Cart

Stereotypes Of Women In Great Expectations
In Manners Makyth Man, Reverand E.J. Hardy said Sweetness is to woman what sugar is to

with a smile on her lips, (Haluk). Women in the Victorian Erawere expected to be everything a man

Joe and Miss. Havisham are terrible representations of a Victorian woman. A woman was
literally the servant of her children and husband, and she was required to be domestic, nurturing
and docile, (Haluk). In Mrs. Joe s home, she is the boss and takes great pride in the fact that she
raised Pip by hand and has threatened to do the same to her husband. This shows that Mrs. Joe is
quite the opposite of what the everyday Victorian woman was like in the home. Instead, Mrs.
Joe is more like some women today where it is not unacceptable for a woman to order around
her children and husband . Miss. Havisham didn t take care of Estella the way most mothers
would have. Or, said Estella, which is a nearer case if you had taught her [Estella], from the
dawn of her intelligence, with your utmost energy and might, that there was such a thing as
daylight, but that it was made to be her enemy and destroyer, and she must always turn against
it, for it had blighted you and would else blight her if you had done this, and then, for a purpose,
had wanted her to take naturally to the daylight and she could not do it, you would have been
disappointed and angry, (Dickens, 326). Instead of nurturing her and teaching her what love feels
like, she showed her what pain was and created a weapon that would kill any man she touched. In

Krasner International Legal Sovereignty
The standard of the popular sovereignty implies, that the authority of a state is to govern itself or
another state. Further, under our constitution, those who wield the executive power of the
Government are responsible to the legislatures and through them, to the people.
Krasner: According to Krasner it can be stated that governance and transitional administration are
inadequate. For this reason Krasner created three elements in which he viewed conventional
sovereignty, however, each still may contain their own violations of conventional sovereignty.

to the alien smuggling in Milan stated in this article. I have recently studied abroad in the Italy

undeniably grueling experiences of these aliens. They are forced from their homes and sold to the

How Does Police Brutality On Children Affect How Society...
Imagine a young child screaming at the top of their lungs while being carried away, at what
looks like to be against their will. Many children have been removed from areas and even arrested
by police officers who have used unnecessary physical force on the child. Majority of these
altercations between the child and police, the child was unarmed, being cooperative, and not being

note that the young boy is terrified while being forcefully removed by authoritative figures, and
one of the officers seem to find the situation to be humorous. The boy was so scared that he

but yet the officers choose to handle the situation with unnecessary force. How does police brutality

Folktales and fables which are often told orally help to teach children of different cultures and
people. Books such as rhyming stories and poetry can aid children to develop phonemic

Health Of Health And Wellbeing
Health, as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (1946), is the state of complete
physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity . Alternate
definitions include a dynamic state of well being characterised by a physical and mental potential,
which satisfies the demands of life commensurate with age, culture, and personal responsibility
(Birscher, 2005). Healthand wellbeing statistics are vital information as an indicator of the health of
the nation. The statistics produced are observed to vary between countries as different methods and
standards of measures are applied. The extent of measurement also depends on the social awareness
of the implications of health and wellbeing.
One measure of health and wellbeing looks at the average life expectancy and mortality rates of
the population. Most countries use this measure as it is easily accessible through hospital records
and self reporting health (SRH) surveys. One of the most frequently used health status indicators,
life expectancy at birth is defined by the estimated life span of a newborn, on average, if current
mortality rates are unchanged. However, the actual age specific mortality rate of any particular birth
cohort cannot be known in advance. If rates are falling, actual life spans will be higher than life
expectancy calculated using current mortality rates. Improvements in life expectancy at birth can
be attributed to a number of factors rising living

Qiansongzi Chen 1. How might the constructive nature of your perceptions play a role in what
you experience while you re walking at night through a graveyard said to be visited by spirits of the
dead?
Constructive perception is in part something that our minds manufacture. Thus what we perceive
is determined, not only by what our eyes and ears and other senses detect, but also by what we
know, what we expect, what we believe, and what our physiological state is. Just because
something seems or feels real doesn t mean that it is real.
2. What are some of the factors that could influence the accuracy of your memory of an event that
happened three years ago?
Our memories are also constructive and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s reasonable to accept personal experience as reliable evidence only if there s no reason to doubt
its reliability.
Personal experience alone generally cannot establish the effectiveness of a treatment beyond a
reasonable doubt.
6. What is confirmation bias? How does it affect our thinking?
Not only do we have a tendency to ignore and misinterpret evidence that conflicts with our own
views; we also have tendency to look for and recognize only evidence that confirms them. We tend
to look for confirming rather than disconfirming evidence, even though the latter can often be far
more revealing.
7. What is the availability error? How does it affect our thinking?
The availability error occurs when people base their judgments on evidence that s vivid or
memorable instead of reliable or trustworthy.
8. How do confirmation bias and the availability error lead to superstitious beliefs?
The availability error not only leads us to ignore the relevant evidence, it also leads us to ignore
relevant hypotheses. For any set of data, it is, in principle, possible to construct any number of
different hypotheses to account for the data. In practice, however, it is often difficult to come up
with many different hypotheses. As a result, we often end up choosing among only those
hypotheses that come to mind, that are available. In the case of unusual phenomena, the only

The Doctor Of The Future
As Thomas Edison once said, the doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his
patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease (
Alternative Medicine Quotes ). This quote is gradually becoming a popular philosophy among
American citizens and holistic physicians who prefer alternative medicines to traditional medicines.
In short, this quote explains how the clinicians of the future will practice preventive medicine.
Physicians will instruct their patients on how to live an enhanced lifestyle, and also how to nurture
their bodies physically so that they can avoid illness and disease in the first place. The alternative
medicinephilosophy is solely based upon the reality that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, many Americans distrust American drug companies, which seem as if they just aim
to overmedicate American citizens in order to gain dollars. Society would prefer more natural and
harmless remedies. A recent report concluded that 25 million Americans made an estimated 425
million visits to alternative care providers annually, which is more than the visits that were made to
primary care physicians ( Alternative Medicine ). This statistic alone showcases American citizen s
desire for alternative medicine care and treatment.
Americans are without question, the most heavily medicated people on the Earth. When most
Americans ponder about drug use in America, they immediately think of illegal drugs such as
marijuana or cocaine. However, pharmaceutical drugs are far more widely used than illicit drugs
are, and the use of such medications has skyrocketed over the past few decades (Thompson 12).
According to a 2006 study by Boston University, eighty two percent of American adults and more
than half of children take at least one medication (prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or
herbal supplements) every day (Thompson 7). However, the forces that shape these statistics are
highly controversial. The driving force is the pharmaceutical industry. With $291 billion in annual
sales, the pharmaceutical industry is the fastest growing and most profitable sector of the American
economy and spending on prescription drugs is the fastest

The Invention Of The Steam Engine
Steam Engine
The invention of the steam engine served as a vital building block to the success of the first
Industrial Revolution. At first steam engines harnessed the power of coal to streamline the
manufacturing process. The invention led to the creation of mills and factories that were once
filled with manual labors. Meanwhile ships and trains fueled by steam engines soon moved
manufactured goods and people more efficiently than horse and buggy. The improved engines were
soon used in every industry from agriculture to textile production. In the textile industry it allowed
for faster and more efficient production without the threat of human error. By the end of its
illustrious run, steam power was instrumental in the development of waterways and railroad
systems that led the Industrial Revolution.
At the time though, the world feared industrial use of steam power would soon lead to greater
joblessness, replacing hard physical work and animal force that powered many industries. The
Luddites, in particular, protested that machine and automations would make humans redundant,
however after the steam engine replaced water wheels as a power source in manufacturing,
employment expanded from 1.2 million jobs in 1830 to 8.3 million by 1910. The overall success
of steam technology led to many new innovations and effectively its own demise

At around the same time, scientists were working on a new engine powered by diesel fuel or
gasoline. In contrast

Relation Between Gender And Infants
Researchers have hypothesized that the hormone that makes an infant a male also organizes the
brain in a masculine way. Studies have shown when testosterone is blocked in the developing fetus
then the male child engages in less rough and tumble play. If the brain plays a part in masculinizing
a male infant then one can obviously see that genderassignment before the child decides their
gender would not be the best treatment option. Studies have shown that boys as young as thirteen
months like to play with so called boy toys such as trucks and girls prefer dolls. Social interaction
also forms the infant s gender, parents interact different with boys versus girls. For example parents
tend to be more vocal with girls. Infants born with congenital

Julius Caesar Unification
Subsequently, Julius Caesar himself had hardly recorded history of forcing himself or his army
upon others. In actuality, much of the trouble led to him, and many of his offerings were for
signs of peacefulness and meant for unification; it was Julius who knew how to get rid of a
threat if he were to be opposed on any front. Julius s most famous unification would be the First
Triumvirate, built for power, but soon falling due to death with an unrelated cause, and jealousy.
Caesar s daughter died, and soon after did Crassus in the Battle of Carrhae. Pompey grew
frightened of Caesar s power and grew jealous, thus Pompey began to work with the senate to
combat him. (Funk Wagnalls 1). These all contributed towards a person of great leadership,

Osteoporosis And How It Begins
Osteoporosis and How It Begins
Common fractures that occur in the spine, hips, and wrist are frequently related to osteoporosis.
Sometimes mild stressors such as coughing or bending over may cause a fracture of brittle and
weakened bones related to osteoporosis. Bone is live tissue that is continuously damaged and
repaired.
Out with the Old, In With the New
Osteoporosis takes place when the removal rate of the old bone tissue is faster than the
formation of new bone. Normally in the beginning stages of bone loss there are no symptoms
exhibited. When weakness has developed in the bones due to osteoporosis, some signs and
symptoms that appear are: height loss, forward bent posture, back pain or fractures that occur
easily. Bones are regenerated continuously, the aged bone is destroyed as the new bone is
created. As the body ages, and the process of old bones being broken down occurs at a quicker
rate than new bone being formed, this process decreases bone mass. The chances of developing
osteoporosis is influenced by the amount of bone mass developed in adolescent years. An elevated
bone mass at peak level indicates the amount of bone present and indicates that you have less
chances to develop osteoporosis with age (Mayo Clinic, 2014).
Bone Density Test
A common test used to determine the health of bones is a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test. This
test can detect osteoporosis, risks for fractures, and assess treatment response. A dual energy x ray

Dexter Research Paper
Dexter is a televesion program that debued in 2006. It follows a middle aged man named Dexter
Morgan who works for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department as a blood splater anilyst.
To his friends and co workers he seems like a normal man albeit a little socially awkward. This is
far from the truth however as Dexteris actually a serial killer. Thourghout the series we are given
insits into Dexters past to explain how and why he became a serial killer. The main reason is
reviled to be the fact that when he was three years old he witnessed the brutal murder of his
mother in front of him. This lead to him being adopted by the police officer who found him. Its
was not long after he was adopted that his adoptive father started noticing signs that Dexter had
antisocial personality disorder such as killing animals. Instead of taking Dexter to get the help that
he needed he decided to take matters into his own hands. He trained Dexter how to kill people and
get away with it; however, he tought him to only kill murderers who he thought had escaped

being admitted into the dining hall of Olive Garden, I decided to order an exquisite meal,
consisting of three courses. To start off my eatingrampage, I asked for a minestrone soup. As soon as
the soup arrived, the pungent scent engulfed my senses, leaving a tingling sensation inside my
nose. Composed of various vegetables and beans, the soup was healthy, providing vital nutrients.

companies new prototypes. CBF implements a large automated process that follows standard
codes to produce these circuit boards efficiently and with above average customer service;
however, recently CBF has been experiencing losses. CBF believes that the loss s the company is

Establish Performance Requirements
In order for CBF to produce high quality circuit boards, the following requirements to establish
performance are recommended:
Extended hours of operation
Additional Machinery
Decrease initial inspection time
If the company were to extend production hours to 12 hours a day with an addition of a machine,
the production and production cost would increase but so would the number of produced circuit
boards. In addition, if the factory could shorten the initial inspection process time, this would allow
for more boards to be produced and lessen the bottle neck affect the company currently faces.
Process Improvement Opportunities
After a full examination of the case study, the top three process improvement opportunities include:
As examined, the top three process improvement opportunities include:
1. Increase the factory s hours of operations to 12 hour days
2. Increase machinery to reduce human error
3. Create a new initial inspection process to decrease time
Final Recommendation
My current workplace is not in the manufacturing industry. The only improvement that my company
does currently implements is increased hours of operation. This increases the cost of operations;
however, creates potential through availability to earn capital. Our company cannot add machinery,
but does use other non human resources to aid in the decreased risk of human error through

Media Based Interaction Started Long Before The Internet
The study of media based interaction started long before the Internet by looking at feedback as a
concept (Wiener, 1948; Shannon Weaver, 1949; Kiousis, 2002). Ultimately, online story comments
online connect to the idea of feedback (Wiener, 1948; Nordlund, 1978). As it relates to digital
environments people have been more likely to seek feedback online compared to those engaged in
person to person conversations (Ang Cummings, 1994). In addition, feedback is one method that
community media outlets could use to provide cohesive representation of the community (Lowrey,
Brozana, Mackay, 2008). Feedback loops represent the pattern of communicationwhere journalists
produced content and then a member of the public responded, this version... Show more content on

Synchronous and asynchronous communication
In the past, there was an issue of public expectation and the consumer should not presume
continuous or immediate feedback (Schudson, 1978). This partially explains why the ability to
engage in interactivity has been considered one of the advantages of digital media (Morris Ogan,
1997). Immediacy within communication has not been necessary to support common action, but
the ability to communicate in real time could make a digital community feel more tangible to its
users (Marathe, 1999). Therefoe, a need remains to understand the differences between synchronous
and asynchronous communication as it relates to digital communication. For example, synchronous
communication tools because of their expectation of quicker retort can lead to additional interaction
(Shirani, Tafti Affisco, 1999). Meanwhile, with asynchronous communication tools the
communication can deeper and more detailed, yet there is less interaction (Shirani, Tafti Affisco,
1999).
The ability to engage in synchronous communication may represent an important part of the
maintenance of virtual communities (Porter, 2004). There are some websites that engage in
synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid (both synchronous and asynchronous) communication
(Porter, 2004). Early studies on digital interactivity suggested the immediacy of response was only
part of the potential for online interactivity; there also existed the possibility for discussions to

  • 2. Development Of The New Waterfront 2. History Of The Place (400 Words) Wellingtons land surface became scarce in 1857 with little space for urbanization to occur. Therefore the idea of reclaiming land was portrayed through the development of Wellington. By the 19th century the entire 1840 s shoreline had disappeared from sight, which was represented with rapid urbanization along the waterfront with growth in skyscrapers and the inner city. (Wellington City Council) With rapid development in Wellington towards the mid 1900 s, the additions of motorways along with the multi lane roads through the city were introduced. Additionally in 1989, The Wellington Harbour Board merged into the Wellington City Council and for the first time since 1880, the City had direct control over ... This was significantly seen with the addition of Maori artist Paratene Matchitt to push the idea further through his sculptural profession within the bridge. This sculptural aspect links back to the heritage of the land as it was once completely covered by water but now it is a significant feature, which develops its distinct inner meaning. It is a point of arrival, a gateway between the distinct reclaims of Wellington harbour and Wellington city (Gray 28 30). 3. Current Physical Location (200 Words + 400 Words) Rewi Thompson (of NgГ¤ti Raukawa descent) was born and raised in Wellington and began his initial carrier in engineering. Thompson worked at Structon Group as a structural draught person before transferring to Structon s architecture department. Thompson eventually left Structon s to study architecture at the University of Auckland, where Thompson later gained a job with Structon in Auckland after gaining his degree. After gaining his architecture registration through working, Thompson established his own practice in 1983. Thompson rose to prominence very quickly through his architecture and states his work as Focusing on two things land and people (REWI DOCULEMNT). • 3. The Effect Of Concentration On Enzymatic Activity Of... Effects of Concentration on Enzymatic Activity of Salivary Amylase Rose Cruz Arapahoe Community College The purpose of this lab was to see if there was a relationship in the amount of concentration of salivary amylase to the amount of time it took to break down starch. To determine if varying concentrations affected the reaction time of the breakdown of starch, we used 4 different dilutions of salivary amylase and used 2 controls (positive/negative). Amylase is an enzyme responsible for breaking down starch into sugars. It is hypothesized that a lower concentration of amylase would cause the breakdown of starch to take a longer period of time or a slower reaction rate as opposed to a higher concentration of amylase. The results of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the concentration of the reactant (substrate) changes and is increased while the enzyme concentration stays the same, the higher the concentration, the lower the reaction rate will be for the enzyme to break down the increased amount of reactant (Factors affecting Enzyme Activity, n.d.). The same applies for if the concentration of enzyme changes and is increased while other factors stay the same. The higher the concentration of enzyme, the higher the reaction rate will be as the enzyme breaks down the reactant. In this experiment concentration affects the enzymatic activity increasing or decreasing the amount of concentration of amylase in a solution (Factors affecting Enzyme Activity, n.d.). If there is more concentration of enzyme there are more active sites available for a reaction to occur (Phenix, n.d.). To see the reaction and breakdown of starch we used Lugol s Iodine Reagent since it turns black in the presence of starch (Bauer and Norman, 2015, p. 92). We placed mixtures of the amylase and starch solutions in each of the wells containing Lugol s Iodine at 30 second intervals. Depending on what solution was used and how the amylase broke down the starch, the color change was noted over time. Due to the information about how concentration affects the reaction rate of an enzyme and substrate, we figured that a lower concentration of amylase would cause a slower reaction rate meaning that with a ... • 4. Representation Of Indian Literature And Film Representation of Maori in New Zealand narratives; literature and film, has been a criticised problem by Maori and academics for centuries. I will explore the representation of Maori in film and literature through a mana wahine context, directed by leading national and international mana wahine scholars. My aim is to shed light on issues that surround Maori representation and issues within the Maori community. My capstone project aims to give Maori a strong, self affirming voice. I want to reclaim my identity and empower other Maori through my personal account of being Maori in a low socio economic suburb. I believe that representations of Maori are stereotypical, derogatory, and false. Therefore, these images reflect us to the wider community in vast negative lights. Most importantly, these deceitful depictions negatively affect views Maori have of themselves. Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith is a pioneer of Kaupapa Maori Research. I will utilize her second edition of her book Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous peoples(Smith 2012) as a framework. I will compare and contrast what Smith has said in relation to other indigenous women academic s discourse of race and gender such as Bell Hooks, Leonie Pihama, and myself. Decolonizing Methodologies is an analytical investigation of the role Western academic research contributed to the process of colonization of indigenous peoples, specifically Maori. It also explores intersections of imperialism and history; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Great Depression By Albert Ellis Albert Ellis was one of the most influential psychologists in American history, who lived between September 27, 1913 and July 24, 2007. In junior high, Ellis had his sights set to become a great novelist. His original plan was to study accounting in high school and college, retire around the age of 30, and write without having to worry about finances. Unfortunately, the Great Depression stopped Ellis from furthering his dream. However, he managed to finish college with a degree in Business Administration from the City University of New York in 1934. In Ellis spare time, he wrote short stories, plays, comics, essays, and novels. At the age of 28, he had written over two dozen manuscripts, but he could not get them published. It was then Ellis realized that his future did not involve being a novelist Ellis decided to start a part time private practice for sex and family therapy after he was awarded his master s degree in 1943. By the time he was awarded a doctorate from Columbia in 1947, Ellis truly believed that psychoanalysiswas the best form of therapy. He quickly decided that he wanted to manage training analysis. Sadly, none of the psycho analytic institutes would not accept anyone without M.D. s, so Ellis had some trouble finding a group to work with. None the less, Albert found a group that agreed to work with him. In a few years time, Ellis had successfully completed a full psychoanalysis and began to practice classical psychoanalysis. • 6. The Effect of Enzymes on Hydrogen Peroxide Decomposition What is the function of enzymes in a living system? Enzymes speed up metabolic reactions necessary for life. Without them certain vital processes would not take place and the body would be unable to function. Difference enzymes work better under different conditions. Where in a human body might it be beneficial to have enzymes work in very acidic environments? In areas, like the stomach, that have a pH of two would benefit by having enzymes that function well in acidic environments. An example of such an enzyme is pepsin. There is a large amount of catalase found in a human liver. Does the liver break down more hydrogen peroxide in the summer or winter? Explain your answer. More hydrogen peroxide will be broken down in the summer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Potassium permanganate used to titrate and determine the amount of decomposed hydrogen peroxide. Sulfuric acid was used to stop the reaction with catalase and hydrogen peroxide. It denatured the enzyme (catalase) and halted the reaction so the amount of hydrogen peroxide decomposed could be measured. Before performing part D of the experiment, why was it necessary to establish a baseline? The baseline is a control and shows the amount of decomposed hydrogen peroxide in the initial sample. You may have observed the reaction of naturally occurring catalase in tissue from either liver of potato. Design an experiment to determine if the amount of catalase varies from tissue to tissue (e.g. 200 g of liver compared to 200 g of potato). Put the 100 g of potato in 1 petri dish and 100 g of liver in another petri dish. Then put equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide for an equal period of time in both dishes. Drain the dishes and titrate them with potassium permanganate simultaneously. The numbers can now be compared using the steps in the sample calculation above in the lab report. In order to compare perform a potassium permanganate titration on pure hydrogen peroxide. Of the thousands of enzymes known, there is a family of enzymes called proteases that catalyze a reaction of breaking down proteins. What do you think would happen if you added a protease to your sample of catalase before proceeding with your experiment? The catalase would be broken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Comparing The Wife s Lament And The Seafarer In the Anglo Saxon epic poems The Wife s Lament , The Wanderer , and The Seafarer , the authors make their poetry much more interesting and enjoyable by inserting literary devices that add meaning and cohesiveness to each line. Each poem contains multiple literary devices such as kennings, caesuras, and imagery. These tools work together in order to add mood and transparency to the poetry. The Wife s Lament is a poem that was translated by Ann Standford, and it uses numerous literary devices to convey the pains and emotions being felt by the narrator, an exiled wife. The author of the poem uses a metaphor to compare the cave the wife has moved into to an empty hall: under an oak treein this den in the earth. / Ancient this eath hall. ... The first example of this is the flashback used in the first paragraph: Homeless and helpless he fled from fate / Thus saith the wanderermindful of misery, / Grievous disasters, and death of kin (Kennedy 5 7). This flashback provides background information for the readers that is necessary to understand what is happening through the rest of the poem. The next literary device appears in the second stanza of the poem: Over wintry seas, seeking a gold lord (Kennedy 23). Gold lord is a kenning in this line, and it is meant to point out the fact that the wanderer is hoping that his life will return to how it was before; however, it is too unrealistic, just as finding a gold lord or perfect king would be impossible. Alliteration is used to highlight the wanderer s feelings during his time of exile: Fettered my feelings, far from my kin, / Homeless and hapless (Kennedy 19 20). By using alliteration only for certain phrases, the author makes those phrases stand out to the reader. I like the term whole because it fits well with my approach to investing, which is, if I may be permitted the phrase, holistic. I m concerned with all of you your mind, your emotions, and your overall state of being. In the following section, I ll review the fundamental characteristics of this class of insurance products, then briefly discuss some of the variations therein. Participating and Participating Whole Life: Participating and Participating Whole Life policies are special types of permanent life insurance policies wherein the policy holder is paid a regular dividend from the insurance company, similar to that which a stockholder might receive. These dividends can be used to pay policy premiums, they can be redirected into the investment portion of the policy, or they can simply be kept the policy holder decides how he or she wants to use them. Participating and Participating Whole Life policies are generally less complex than universal policies, since the premiums are almost always fixed. With variable and participating policies, the death benefit may grow or shrink, but there is almost always a guaranteed minimum payout. TIP: The ins and outs of universal and whole plans are very complex, and need no, MUST be discussed with a qualified life insurance agent. Comparison of Investments By now I hope you re convinced about the value of whole life insurance as investment tool. The proper use of a whole life policy can put you on a path to financial security and wealth creation. A personal favorite of mine, Remember A Day evokes imagery like a sonic painting, rendered by the likes of someone such as Salvador Dali. Bike is a Syd Barrett masterpiece which appears on The Piper At the Gates of Dawn (1967). Ostensibly written for Syd s then girlfriend Jenny Spires, we take a quixotic notion that the song references, if not deliberately, then synchronistically, the first self administered dose of LSD. In 1943, inventor of LSD Albert Hoffman intentionally ingested 250 micrograms of LSD to determine its effects. He subsequently took a bicycle ride during which he succumbed to the drugs effects causing him to feel anxiety, a sense of going insane, and the belief that his neighbor was a malevolent witch. The events of this first LSD trip have come to be known as Bicycle Day. Education in Fredrick Douglass Nicole Blount Voices of America English Literature 229.1 February 28, 2011 The Irony of Education in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass The power of education in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is one of the most important themes in the entire work, but it is not a theme with a consistent meaning. Although Frederick Douglass understands that the only path to freedom, both for himself and fellow slaves, is through learning to read, write, and have an educational base to build on, he is at the same time disgusted with education because it causes him to understand the full extent of the horrors of slavery. It proved to be true and is played out as Douglass finally acts out violently. It is by far in the best interest of the slave owner to keep the slaves ignorant of concepts of freedom or education because it might not only make them wistful, and thoughtful, but by proxy, less useful to them as slaves. In order to keep slavery as a stable institution, it was important for many of the slave owners in the text to make educating a slave something that could be punished. Well meaning slave owners were heavily criticized for assisting a slave in his or her education and the fact that it was illegal to teach a slave to read indicates the danger the white slave owning establishment sees as inherent to education. In other words, by their fierce protection of the practices of education, the slave owners were admitting that through education there is some kind of freedom, some way of circumventing their absolute power. Frederick Douglass became the most successful abolitionist who changed America s views of slavery through his writings and actions. Frederick Douglass had many achievements throughout his life. His Life as a slave had a great impact on his writings. His great oratory skills left the largest impact on Civil War time period literature. Overall, he was the best black speaker and writer ever. • 17. Isolation In M. L. Stedman s The Light Between Oceans The chains of the decision wrap themselves insidiously around his torso, binding the man while the woman sits smiling in the corner ignoring his pleas. Sometimes the cold metal shifts and loosens its harsh grip when the child rests her small hands on them or the woman gets up and whispers in his ear, but never long enough to let him forget. Just like these constraints, Tom Sherbourne faces suffocating guilt about failing to report Lucy and Frank s mysterious arrival to Janus and subsequently claiming the girl as his own daughter with his wife Isabel in M.L. Stedman s The Light Between Oceans. Throughout his marriage, Tom struggles deeply with the fluctuating concept of right and wrong, which is shaped by various factors in his life. In the... However, Tom originally found solace in the removal from society as it helped ease the memories of the war and his childhood with its simplicity and predictability. As the couple settles and Lucy arrives, the motif of isolation and the island itself darkens to represent a prison, entrapping Tom and overwhelming him with the lies, guilt and knowledge of Hannah suffering miles away. Unlike if Tom were on the mainland where it is much more difficult to escape the constant reminder of their choice, he manages to subdue his restless conscience at times so that isolation lulls him with music of the lie (159). Isabel experiences a similar effect brought on by the years of seclusion. During her cathartic visit with Ralph, Isabel admits to the powerful force of the island on her judgement: Janus was real. Lucy was real. Everything else was just make belief (310). Isolation makes it easier for both Isabel and Tom to forget about Hannah and the rest of the world like they are no more than an exciting story out of a book once read, closed and then tucked neatly away in the closet to be revisited ... More like the only person in the whole world who actually talks to me out of choice. Well, at least without ulterior motives. At first people used to crowd around me, being the daughter of the Beta couple meant that there was a huge chance that I d be powerful and definitely loaded. After they found out I was an Omega they disappeared and Elena became the better/popular sister. After that some people still crowded me in hopes that Elena would noticed them through me but soon enough they realized her hatred for me and left. Funny how people change and judge you just because of your position in the world and not you, for just being you. Ashley is also one of the prettiest girls in school, with ginger hair that reaches down to her hips and hazel eyes that are always full of cheer and happiness. I feel lucky to have her as a friend, even if our personalities and tastes are vastly different. While she likes to go out to parties and hang out with friends, I like to stay home and read. She also goes shopping a lot, hence her fashionable outfit. Today she s wearing a ivory flower lace crop top with a baby pink cross over pencil skirt. A simple gold band decorating her arm, our pack s necklace matching perfectly. (A/N picture above, the necklace isn t the same but the clothes are) As soon as your first shift happened either a necklace or ring was forged specifically for you. For she wolves it was a necklace, it came in different shapes depending on your status. For Ash it was a shield, her parents being warriors, it had the pack s symbol thinly craved in it, as well as her initials in cursive. Males had a ring, it also carried the pack s symbol but instead of being craved in it, it was added. Once you found you mate, a animal would appear along with your mate s initials. How? You may ask yourself, for it had magic. The animal is your spirit, and you could shift between that animal, a wolf, and a human. In the 1850 s, the pro slavery South and the anti slavery North collided when the case of Dred Scott, a black slave who attempted to gain liberation, was brought to court. His freedoms had been denied and when he was held illegally as a slave in the state of Illinois, these facts were not acknowledged when he proposed his freedoms, and therefore, had every right to petition his liberation. Debate of the constitutionality of The Missouri Compromise caused controversy within the Dred Scott case. The Missouri Compromise came about in 1818, when Missouri petitioned to become a slave state. The house of representatives, however, proposed an amendment that would ban the importation of slaves, and eventually all slavery. Many children have been removed from areas and even arrested by police officers who have used unnecessary physical force on the child. Majority of these altercations between the child and police, the child was unarmed, being cooperative, and not being violent towards the police officer. When has there ever been a time where it was a justifiable right to harm a child that isn t causing any physical harm to themselves or others? In this image one can note that the young boy is terrified while being forcefully removed by authoritative figures, and one of the officers seem to find the situation to be humorous. The boy was so scared that he urinated on himself. It s obvious that the child is defenseless and shows no sign of hurting anyone, but yet the officers choose to handle the situation with unnecessary force. How does police brutality on children affect how society portrays law enforcement? Have children been traumatized after having to go through the experience of being physically or even verbally harmed by an officer? Are the children given justice for this injustice act by police? Police assert themselves, assumingly as helpful, caring, and always doing what is right for the great or good of mankind, but this image highlights police officers often behave otherwise. • 40. Health Of Health And Wellbeing Health, as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (1946), is the state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity . Alternate definitions include a dynamic state of well being characterised by a physical and mental potential, which satisfies the demands of life commensurate with age, culture, and personal responsibility (Birscher, 2005). Healthand wellbeing statistics are vital information as an indicator of the health of the nation. The statistics produced are observed to vary between countries as different methods and standards of measures are applied. The extent of measurement also depends on the social awareness of the implications of health and wellbeing. One measure of health and wellbeing looks at the average life expectancy and mortality rates of the population. Most countries use this measure as it is easily accessible through hospital records and self reporting health (SRH) surveys. One of the most frequently used health status indicators, life expectancy at birth is defined by the estimated life span of a newborn, on average, if current mortality rates are unchanged. However, the actual age specific mortality rate of any particular birth cohort cannot be known in advance. If rates are falling, actual life spans will be higher than life expectancy calculated using current mortality rates. Improvements in life expectancy at birth can be attributed to a number of factors rising living ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How might the constructive nature of your perceptions play a role in what you experience while you re walking at night through a graveyard said to be visited by spirits of the dead? Constructive perception is in part something that our minds manufacture. Thus what we perceive is determined, not only by what our eyes and ears and other senses detect, but also by what we know, what we expect, what we believe, and what our physiological state is. Just because something seems or feels real doesn t mean that it is real. 2. What are some of the factors that could influence the accuracy of your memory of an event that happened three years ago? It s reasonable to accept personal experience as reliable evidence only if there s no reason to doubt its reliability. Personal experience alone generally cannot establish the effectiveness of a treatment beyond a reasonable doubt. 6. What is confirmation bias? How does it affect our thinking? Not only do we have a tendency to ignore and misinterpret evidence that conflicts with our own views; we also have tendency to look for and recognize only evidence that confirms them. We tend to look for confirming rather than disconfirming evidence, even though the latter can often be far more revealing. 7. What is the availability error? How does it affect our thinking? The availability error occurs when people base their judgments on evidence that s vivid or memorable instead of reliable or trustworthy. 8. How do confirmation bias and the availability error lead to superstitious beliefs? The availability error not only leads us to ignore the relevant evidence, it also leads us to ignore relevant hypotheses. For any set of data, it is, in principle, possible to construct any number of different hypotheses to account for the data. In practice, however, it is often difficult to come up with many different hypotheses. As a result, we often end up choosing among only those hypotheses that come to mind, that are available. At first steam engines harnessed the power of coal to streamline the manufacturing process. The invention led to the creation of mills and factories that were once filled with manual labors. Meanwhile ships and trains fueled by steam engines soon moved manufactured goods and people more efficiently than horse and buggy. The improved engines were soon used in every industry from agriculture to textile production. In the textile industry it allowed for faster and more efficient production without the threat of human error. By the end of its illustrious run, steam power was instrumental in the development of waterways and railroad systems that led the Industrial Revolution. At the time though, the world feared industrial use of steam power would soon lead to greater joblessness, replacing hard physical work and animal force that powered many industries. The Luddites, in particular, protested that machine and automations would make humans redundant, however after the steam engine replaced water wheels as a power source in manufacturing, employment expanded from 1.2 million jobs in 1830 to 8.3 million by 1910. • 46. Osteoporosis And How It Begins Osteoporosis and How It Begins Common fractures that occur in the spine, hips, and wrist are frequently related to osteoporosis. Sometimes mild stressors such as coughing or bending over may cause a fracture of brittle and weakened bones related to osteoporosis. Bone is live tissue that is continuously damaged and repaired. Out with the Old, In With the New Osteoporosis takes place when the removal rate of the old bone tissue is faster than the formation of new bone. Normally in the beginning stages of bone loss there are no symptoms exhibited. When weakness has developed in the bones due to osteoporosis, some signs and symptoms that appear are: height loss, forward bent posture, back pain or fractures that occur easily. Bones are regenerated continuously, the aged bone is destroyed as the new bone is created. As the body ages, and the process of old bones being broken down occurs at a quicker rate than new bone being formed, this process decreases bone mass. The chances of developing osteoporosis is influenced by the amount of bone mass developed in adolescent years. An elevated bone mass at peak level indicates the amount of bone present and indicates that you have less chances to develop osteoporosis with age (Mayo Clinic, 2014). As it relates to digital environments people have been more likely to seek feedback online compared to those engaged in person to person conversations (Ang Cummings, 1994). Synchronous and asynchronous communication In the past, there was an issue of public expectation and the consumer should not presume continuous or immediate feedback (Schudson, 1978). This partially explains why the ability to engage in interactivity has been considered one of the advantages of digital media (Morris Ogan, 1997). Immediacy within communication has not been necessary to support common action, but the ability to communicate in real time could make a digital community feel more tangible to its users (Marathe, 1999). Therefoe, a need remains to understand the differences between synchronous and asynchronous communication as it relates to digital communication. For example, synchronous communication tools because of their expectation of quicker retort can lead to additional interaction (Shirani, Tafti Affisco, 1999). Meanwhile, with asynchronous communication tools the communication can deeper and more detailed, yet there is less interaction (Shirani, Tafti Affisco, 1999). The ability to engage in synchronous communication may represent an important part of the maintenance of virtual communities (Porter, 2004). There are some websites that engage in synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid (both synchronous and asynchronous) communication (Porter, 2004). Early studies on digital interactivity suggested the immediacy of response was only part of the potential for online interactivity; there also existed the possibility for discussions to ...
