A Brief Note On Landfill With Electricity Recovery
3.3.2.Landfill with Electricity recovery
Landfilling with electricity recovery used in this study is a typical MSW landfill with surface and basic sealing, site operations including landfill gas
treatment, sludge treatment, leachate treatment and deposition, and meeting European limits for emissions. The inventory data are taken from the
GaBi database (GaBi, 2015). 28% of the landfill gas is assumed to be used for electricity production while 22% of it is assumed to be flared and the
rest (50%) emitted to the environment. The energy and manufacturing processes of the sealing materials requirements for the site, are included within
the system.
3.3.3.Incineration
The Incinerator used in this study is an MSW incinerator with Moving grate combined heat and power incinerator used in Europe and UK in
particular. The inventory data used are taken from the GaBi database (GaBi, 2015). And the control of emissions is done using wet and dry flue gas
treatment by injecting hydrated lime, urea and activated carbon into the flue gases with filter bags for particulate removal. Ferrous metals (Fe, Cu, Al
etc.) are recovered, which 60% of the produced bottom ash after metal recovery and ageing is reused as construction material (and will leave the
system as bottom ash for reuse). The remaining 40% are disposed on a landfill (GaBi, 2015)). The credits for the electricity, metal recovery and
operation of the underground deposit is included with gross electrical efficiency assumed to be

Population Growth and the Environment
1.0 Introduction
The human population is increasing rapidly but advancement of technology is trying to keep up with the pace. By the increase of human population,
the contact with the environment is getting more intensive, because human needs are increasing. And by the findings and development of new
technologies, human can apply them to get what they want. And it's now understood and widely accepted that new technologies would bring their
respective side effects besides their advantages. This clearly tells us that the back bone of man made pollution is the increase in population and
technology. Pollution can also be caused naturally. This type of pollution does not cause excessive harm to our lives due to its regeneration ability; but,

Air pollution affects every living thing on this planet. It harms the humans, plants, marine life and even the atmosphere we breathe me. There are many
effects but the most common are as follows. 4.2.1 Diseases– Pollution and human diseases have a very strong connection. Being exposed to
contaminated air increases the risk of heart diseases, digestive disorders, skin irritation and many more. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common
cause of death in Sweden and other Western European countries. Tobacco smoke also causes eye, nose, and throat irritation, as well as headaches,
bronchitis, pneumonia, lung cancer, and heart disease. It also increases the risk of respiratory and ear infections in young children. Air pollution is
also very harmful for pregnant ladies as well for their babies. 4.2.2 Damage to plants– Pollutants such as ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are
harmful for crops because they damage the waxy coating on the leaves which prevent water loss, pests and frost. Loss of crops can eventually lead to
a shortage of food supple in the country. In addition to that, trees produce oxygen which we human need and if the trees are damaged, humans are

Cascades Park: Superfund Site Analysis
Cascades Park is a 24–acre park that lies along the stream known as the St. Augustine Branch (Wikipedia). Nationally recognized as a historic place,
Cascades Park was a major influence in the government's decision making of the capital city location. That park that we all know today was
recently opened in 2014, but it was not always a safe place to be. Before 30 million dollars was spent on building a 3,000 seat outdoor amphitheater,
miles of trails to run and walk on, historical monuments as well as a children playground; Cascades Park was a contaminated wasteland from coal tar
released by a manufactured gas plant. What designates a site a Superfund site? A superfund site is a hazardous location that requires long–term
response to clean up... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two wastes that resulted from this production were coal tar and purified waste. Coal tar was a formation of less volatile chemical compounds.
Coal tar's sole purpose was for roofing and road building material. Scientists taking coal tar as a starting point developed other uses. Manufactured
gas plants were creating more coal than they could find buyers for and eventually formed an emulsion with water. The tar produced spills and leaks
over decades of operation. Chemicals found in coal tar were anthracene, fluorene, napthalene, pyrene and many others (dec.ny.gov). Sulfur and
cyanide compounds that were being removed through purifier beds consisting of lime or wood chips formed purifier waste. Reactions took place
between the gas and purifier material corroding gas pipes, stoves and lighting fixtures. Purifier beds would eventually fill up with tar and become
unusable. Having to dispose of the material, the waste had a strong odor and the wood chips would ignite if left uncovered. The purifier waste would
either be shipped to landfills or fill low–lying areas on premises. The cyanide compound found in purifier waste contaminated groundwater away from
the burial location. The water that became affected was highly acidic and caused harm to fish and

Difficulties In Trashed By Candida Hardy
Difficulties in achieving waste management.

'Trashed' is an award winning documentary which was written and directed by Candida Brady. It shows the impact every person is having on our
environment by the production of waste and gives an insight into the problems for future generations across the planet. In the early 1980's, the method of
waste handling was simply to landfill waste and there was not much concern at that time bout the design of these landfills. Many of them were rushed
and ideas such as leachate collection systems were the last things on people's minds. These landfill were basically just huge holes in the ground into
which any type of waste or dirt was thrown. This was evident in the documentary, where in Wingmoor, Gloucestershire, a landfill was named 'The
most toxic in Europe', and where toxins such as paints and nail varnish leached down into the water table. It said there are around 2,500 active landfills
in the United Kingdom, where the continuously rising population are producing more and more rubbish. Methane levels are at an all–time high and
one landfill even burst into the sea in Dorset, with the rubbish affecting fishermen. As the 1980's progressed, people started to realise the damage that
was being caused. The American State of Minnesota was ordered by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In industrialised country's this means changing wasteful habits and in developing countries it means they should not pick up these wasteful habits in
the first place as waste prevention can only be impacted by individuals. There have been many strategies set up to reduce waste, including waste
disposal companies charging people by the weight of their rubbish, shops providing incentives to product repair and encouraging industries to increase
product durability, which would in turn minimise the production packaging and other disposable products made up of harmful

Spending Money On Recycling Can Fall Into The Gray
The coffee machine has been plugged in and is busily bubbling. The deli tray from Ray's with all the easy to grab small foods is heaped. Water
bottles are stacked in preparation. The heavy office door has been hastily closed. Its members are seated, pencils, sheets of paper and phones are close.
They are in for the long haul. Get ready.... Get set.....Go!
This is the scene in many mayoral offices across the U.S. during the budget planning week. Slash that, slash that and then an occasional keep that.
Money is tight and there are many worthy programs or causes that need that almighty dollar. Decisions have to be made sometimes in gray areas. Gray
meaning, it is worthy, functional and wanted, but is it necessary? The concept of spending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If this could happen in New York, we could be next! A national discussion led many to believe thatrecycling was the only option left.
According to the EPA, in the past 50 years, humans have consumed more resources than in all previous history. The U.S buried or burned more than
166 million tons of resources–paper, plastic, metals, glass and organic materials–in landfills and incinerators in 2008. This is the equivalent to the
weight of 88 million cars. We recycled and composted only one–third of our discards. In 2009, Americans produced enough trash to circle the earth 24
times. These numbers are startling, and one does have to ask, when will we run out of resources?
When considering these facts, recycling seems to be the only answer. There have been multiple discussions, and in–depth studies on the benefits and
detriments of recycling. The frequently asked queries are: Do the costs outweigh the benefits? Is there and will there be safe and available landfill
space? Could recycling actually be hurting the environment? These questions have been on the forefront of discussion for the last twenty seven years.
The opponents of recycling frequently emphasize the increased cost of recycling versus dumping. The money it costs is the bottom line. In 1996, John
Tierney, a New York Times writer wrote, "Mandatory recycling programs...offer mainly short

Waste Management
Municipal waste is disposed of in three different ways. As of 2004 it is estimated that 71 percent is land filled, 16 percent incinerated, and 13
percent recycled. Other wastes that have to be disposed of are nuclear and hazardous wastes. The environmental effects of different waste
management solutions will be discussed as well as ideal ways, in my opinion, to dispose of different forms of solid wastes. Landfills are the most
commonly used form of disposing wastes today. It is also a form of disposal that causes many environmental impacts that are in need of addressing. A
major effect of landfills is Leachate, a contaminated liquid that percolates through the waste in a landfill and probably the most addressed issue. This ...

I say this because according to EPA.gov, paper contributes to 40 percent of a landfill's contents. This staggering statistics lead to my long
– term
solution in handling waste. The government should enact a law that makes it mandatory that all Americans must recycle their newspapers. This step
alone will reduce the amount of garbage that goes into our landfills by 13 percent (Epa.gov). A department should be created to check for improper
disposal of newspapers and provide hefty fines for Americans that do now want to obey this law. It may seem strict but the overall benefits of this
enactment would outweigh the initial cry of Americans that feel that this proposal is unfair. After this program has been implemented and the bugs
worked out successfully the government should keep adding materials to the "mandatory recycling lists". To think that if we could get a 100%
recycling rate of paper, that would be a 40 percent reduction of waste disposal that goes into our landfills. Another aspect of recycling that should be
focuses on is the pay–as–you– throw program utilized in many cities today. Factors plaguing every American adult are economic issues because every
American strives to survive economically in this world. The pay–as–you–throw program directly affects a consumer's wallet by charging for the
amount of waste a consumer disposes of. This program would make Americans more waste conscience. My idea to expand this program is rewarding

Glass recycling saved a ton of resources for every ton produced, reduce by 75% mining waste involved in their production and reduce pollution
resulting there from by 20%.
Plastics
The main problem with plastics is due to a completely inappropriate use of it, because it is a very resistant and durable, used to make objects that
have use for a very short space of time, which are then thrown into the trash. This is evident with the variety of bags, plastic packaging and disposable
products.
Plastics are materials of great variety. Although they have a common origin, are polymers made from oil, but its molecular structure varies greatly from
one plastic to another.
Ferrous scrap
Tin cans are so easy to recycle as aluminum, and recycled saves huge amounts of energy and resources.
Recycling steel and tin cans saves 74% of the energy used to produce virgin materials; at least 70% to 80% tin is recovered by recycling a can. Cans
may be crushed, cut the bottom to save space. Containing aerosol cans are difficult to recycle for its explosive contents; it is preferable not to buy.
The scrap metal is recyclable, but should be reasonably free of other materials.
Aluminum
It is also very easy to recycle and get a good price in the market, so many projects include recycling the cans.
It is suitable to crush cans to store

Kids In Congo By Annie Oonard Analysis
Annie Leonard creates a cohesive and influential argument against man's overwhelming reliance on consumption by integrating numerous personal
anecdotes, popular environmental design philosophies, governmental initiatives, and corporations' backward innovation tactics to reaffirm man's need
to use their sociological imagination to truly see the world in front of them and fight for a more socially equitable and environmentally sustainable
way of life. First, Leonard provides an all–encompassing perspective of corporations and the government as they weave an overarching business safety
net of monetarily driven intentions to protect the uncontrolled growth of capitalism in the American economy. The bottom–up, American dream
businesses, are overpowered... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She first references many upstream efforts to change the way corporations and industries design, market, and produce their products. For instance, she
frequently echoes the claims of the Upcycle's McDonough and Braungart to take the toxins out of the design process in the beginning, like Europe is
doing with chlorine removal from paper (Leonard, 54). Leonard also continually references closing the loop for production materials and changing
values to ensure design is environmentally and socially sound (Leonard, 84, 103). Biomimicry is also celebrated as an influential and revolutionary
design tactic (Leonard, 19). While those efforts are more top–down, Leonard also supports bottom–up, such as Greenmanager (Leonard, 188). The
author successfully incorporates many environmental initiatives and efforts into a comprehensive plan for moving forward. She embraces and
encourages these efforts, but argues they are just placing more Band–Aids on a leaky pipe, rather than dealing with the problem at hand, they are just
not big or powerful enough. Rather, Leonard asserts there must be a civic engagement part to bring the accountability and responsibility back to the
government and corporations (175). Leonard makes a great point, but

Taking a Look at Pavement Recycling
1.0Introduction
Nowadays, there world is more aware about materials disposing and there are many concerns regarding the disposal of waste materials and its impact
in the environment. So, the elimination process for the materials passes through the optimization of their use in the industrial processes. Existing
deteriorated material can be reused; its characteristics can be rehabilitated, recycled and improved. The old material can be used in the same
application that it was initially used for, or as part of a new material.
1.1 Recycling in general
Recycling is the process of transforming or reusing of waste materials to get new products to benefit the reduction of using fresh materials, reduce
energy usage, reduce air pollution and water pollution since that most of the materials are not renewable. The trend nowadays is to reduce the
consumption of energy and new materials. As a result of that the world create hierarchy to called 3R of waste which are reduce, reuse and recycle.
Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and electronics. Although similar in effect, the composting or other
reuse of biodegradable waste such as food or garden waste is considered recycling.
1.2Pavement recycling
In recent years the use of recycled materials in pavements has become an increasingly widespread practice. This is especially true for flexible
pavements like (HMA) and rigid pavements like Portland cement concrete (PCC) materials that are

Mans Effect On The Environment Essay
Man's Effect on the Environment
1) SOURCES OF POLLUTION
Freshwater Environments : Man pollutes freshwater all over the world in many ways there is much waste and pollution that ends up in rivers.
One of the main hazards is called eutrophication, this process becomes enriched with artificial nutrients from fertilisers which run off into the rivers and
upset the natural nutrient cycle of the river, lake or pond. The water turns green because of the algae which when they die multifly using up all the
oxygen.
Similar consequences occur if raw sewage is pumped into a river.
Chemical waste from factories dump their un wanted waste into rivers, lakes or ponds as well. One major component that effects the water ... Show

Lead
Lead is found in cars exhausts and some plants.
It can cause brain damage and various mental disabilities.
Lead free petrol are now used world wide.
Fertilisers
Eutrophication from fertilisers running off the fields and into rivers and lakes causes abnormal plant growth.
It causes bad tatse, odours and algae and other things like precipitation of calcium carbonate.
Treatment in aerobic or anaerobic lagoons can control it.

When reacted with sunlight, mosture and oxidants it produces sulphuric and nitric acids. These then get mixed up with the water cycle and fall to earth
as Acid Rain.

Incineration Essay
cineration is the process of the destruction of waste by converting the organic material to carbon dioxide and water vapour by fire leaving only the ash
and non–combustibles to dispose in the landfill
(http://www.saincinerator.com). Ash is the incombustible inorganic residue after the waste has been destructed by means ofincineration. Incineration is
another method that is used for reduction of waste in the form of burning waste leaving smaller amount of ash. The incinerators can be in the form of
oil, gas, coal fire or when burning high BTU waste such as paper, need no auxiliary fuel (http://www.sainincinerator.com).
Incineration can also refer as waste treatment technology, which includes the combustion of waste for recovering energy (http://www.wrfound.org)....

2.0 The Project
The proposal is to erect an Energy from Waste (EfW) Incinerator to be sited on the Proposed Location (see Map), while choosing the best possible
location on the map, and giving supporting arguments.
Incineration is a practical method of disposal that saves a lot of money on transport of waste to landfills and therefore also the carbon footprint that
such transport leaves behind. The sheer reduction in the space required to dispose of the 10 percent of waste that it does produce relieves pressure
on land, which in urban areas can constitute a big saving (Rulkens, W., 2007). Landfills have never been a pretty site and also give rise to a lot of
pests and insects. An incinerating plant will look like any other industrial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This scope of this EIA covers the plant infrastructure construction, the incineration process/ operation of plant, electricity recovery and disposal of
ashes. The additional process of delivering the slag and residues of the incineration process to landfill has also been taken into account.
A Waste Incinerator which is designed specifically for Energy Recovery generates significant electrical power and thermal energy due to the high
calorific value of the waste. The efficiency of energy recovery (production of electricity) is 20%. Material recovery is also achieved in this process,
particularly Fe metals. For front–end materials, recovery is 50%, while for back–end materials, it is 5%(Cheng, H.et al., 2010).
2.2 The Process of Incineration
In the process of incineration, incinerators reduce the waste by burning it after the incinerator is initially fired up with gas or other combustible
material (Hjelmar, 1996). The process is then sustained by the waste itself. Complete waste combustion requires a temperature of 850Вє C for at least
two seconds but most plants raise it to higher temperatures to reduce organic substances containing chlorine. Flue gases are then sent to scrubbers
which remove all dangerous chemicals from them. To reduce dioxin in the chimneys where they are normally formed, cooling systems are introduced
in the chimneys. Chimneys are

A Brief Note On Landfill With Electricity Recovery

  • 1. A Brief Note On Landfill With Electricity Recovery 3.3.2.Landfill with Electricity recovery Landfilling with electricity recovery used in this study is a typical MSW landfill with surface and basic sealing, site operations including landfill gas treatment, sludge treatment, leachate treatment and deposition, and meeting European limits for emissions. The inventory data are taken from the GaBi database (GaBi, 2015). 28% of the landfill gas is assumed to be used for electricity production while 22% of it is assumed to be flared and the rest (50%) emitted to the environment. The energy and manufacturing processes of the sealing materials requirements for the site, are included within the system. 3.3.3.Incineration The Incinerator used in this study is an MSW incinerator with Moving grate combined heat and power incinerator used in Europe and UK in particular. The inventory data used are taken from the GaBi database (GaBi, 2015). And the control of emissions is done using wet and dry flue gas treatment by injecting hydrated lime, urea and activated carbon into the flue gases with filter bags for particulate removal. Ferrous metals (Fe, Cu, Al etc.) are recovered, which 60% of the produced bottom ash after metal recovery and ageing is reused as construction material (and will leave the system as bottom ash for reuse). The remaining 40% are disposed on a landfill (GaBi, 2015)). The credits for the electricity, metal recovery and operation of the underground deposit is included with gross electrical efficiency assumed to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Population Growth and the Environment 1.0 Introduction The human population is increasing rapidly but advancement of technology is trying to keep up with the pace. By the increase of human population, the contact with the environment is getting more intensive, because human needs are increasing. And by the findings and development of new technologies, human can apply them to get what they want. And it's now understood and widely accepted that new technologies would bring their respective side effects besides their advantages. This clearly tells us that the back bone of man made pollution is the increase in population and technology. Pollution can also be caused naturally. This type of pollution does not cause excessive harm to our lives due to its regeneration ability; but, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fossil fuels are also increases the levels of atmospheric methane and nitrous oxide. 4.2 Effects of air pollution Air pollution affects every living thing on this planet. It harms the humans, plants, marine life and even the atmosphere we breathe me. There are many effects but the most common are as follows. 4.2.1 Diseases– Pollution and human diseases have a very strong connection. Being exposed to contaminated air increases the risk of heart diseases, digestive disorders, skin irritation and many more. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in Sweden and other Western European countries. Tobacco smoke also causes eye, nose, and throat irritation, as well as headaches, bronchitis, pneumonia, lung cancer, and heart disease. It also increases the risk of respiratory and ear infections in young children. Air pollution is also very harmful for pregnant ladies as well for their babies. 4.2.2 Damage to plants– Pollutants such as ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are harmful for crops because they damage the waxy coating on the leaves which prevent water loss, pests and frost. Loss of crops can eventually lead to a shortage of food supple in the country. In addition to that, trees produce oxygen which we human need and if the trees are damaged, humans are ... • 3. Cascades Park: Superfund Site Analysis Cascades Park is a 24–acre park that lies along the stream known as the St. Augustine Branch (Wikipedia). Nationally recognized as a historic place, Cascades Park was a major influence in the government's decision making of the capital city location. That park that we all know today was recently opened in 2014, but it was not always a safe place to be. Before 30 million dollars was spent on building a 3,000 seat outdoor amphitheater, miles of trails to run and walk on, historical monuments as well as a children playground; Cascades Park was a contaminated wasteland from coal tar released by a manufactured gas plant. What designates a site a Superfund site? A superfund site is a hazardous location that requires long–term response to clean up... Manufactured gas plants were creating more coal than they could find buyers for and eventually formed an emulsion with water. The tar produced spills and leaks over decades of operation. Chemicals found in coal tar were anthracene, fluorene, napthalene, pyrene and many others (dec.ny.gov). Sulfur and cyanide compounds that were being removed through purifier beds consisting of lime or wood chips formed purifier waste. Reactions took place between the gas and purifier material corroding gas pipes, stoves and lighting fixtures. Purifier beds would eventually fill up with tar and become unusable. Having to dispose of the material, the waste had a strong odor and the wood chips would ignite if left uncovered. The purifier waste would either be shipped to landfills or fill low–lying areas on premises. The cyanide compound found in purifier waste contaminated groundwater away from the burial location. The water that became affected was highly acidic and caused harm to fish and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Difficulties In Trashed By Candida Hardy Difficulties in achieving waste management. Cathal Dowling. C13401892 DT004–3 'Trashed' is an award winning documentary which was written and directed by Candida Brady. It shows the impact every person is having on our environment by the production of waste and gives an insight into the problems for future generations across the planet. In the early 1980's, the method of waste handling was simply to landfill waste and there was not much concern at that time bout the design of these landfills. Many of them were rushed and ideas such as leachate collection systems were the last things on people's minds. These landfill were basically just huge holes in the ground into which any type of waste or dirt was thrown. This was evident in the documentary, where in Wingmoor, Gloucestershire, a landfill was named 'The most toxic in Europe', and where toxins such as paints and nail varnish leached down into the water table. It said there are around 2,500 active landfills in the United Kingdom, where the continuously rising population are producing more and more rubbish. Methane levels are at an all–time high and one landfill even burst into the sea in Dorset, with the rubbish affecting fishermen. As the 1980's progressed, people started to realise the damage that was being caused. The American State of Minnesota was ordered by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In industrialised country's this means changing wasteful habits and in developing countries it means they should not pick up these wasteful habits in the first place as waste prevention can only be impacted by individuals. There have been many strategies set up to reduce waste, including waste disposal companies charging people by the weight of their rubbish, shops providing incentives to product repair and encouraging industries to increase product durability, which would in turn minimise the production packaging and other disposable products made up of harmful ... • 5. Spending Money On Recycling Can Fall Into The Gray The coffee machine has been plugged in and is busily bubbling. The deli tray from Ray's with all the easy to grab small foods is heaped. Water bottles are stacked in preparation. Gray meaning, it is worthy, functional and wanted, but is it necessary? The concept of spending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If this could happen in New York, we could be next! A national discussion led many to believe thatrecycling was the only option left. According to the EPA, in the past 50 years, humans have consumed more resources than in all previous history. The U.S buried or burned more than 166 million tons of resources–paper, plastic, metals, glass and organic materials–in landfills and incinerators in 2008. This is the equivalent to the weight of 88 million cars. We recycled and composted only one–third of our discards. In 2009, Americans produced enough trash to circle the earth 24 times. These numbers are startling, and one does have to ask, when will we run out of resources? When considering these facts, recycling seems to be the only answer. There have been multiple discussions, and in–depth studies on the benefits and detriments of recycling. The frequently asked queries are: Do the costs outweigh the benefits? Is there and will there be safe and available landfill space? Could recycling actually be hurting the environment? These questions have been on the forefront of discussion for the last twenty seven years. The opponents of recycling frequently emphasize the increased cost of recycling versus dumping. The money it costs is the bottom line. In 1996, John Tierney, a New York Times writer wrote, "Mandatory recycling programs...offer mainly short –term benefits to a few groups–politicians, public relation consultants, environmental organizations, waste–handling ... • 6. Waste Management Municipal waste is disposed of in three different ways. As of 2004 it is estimated that 71 percent is land filled, 16 percent incinerated, and 13 percent recycled. Other wastes that have to be disposed of are nuclear and hazardous wastes. The environmental effects of different waste management solutions will be discussed as well as ideal ways, in my opinion, to dispose of different forms of solid wastes. Landfills are the most commonly used form of disposing wastes today. It is also a form of disposal that causes many environmental impacts that are in need of addressing. A major effect of landfills is Leachate, a contaminated liquid that percolates through the waste in a landfill and probably the most addressed issue. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I say this because according to EPA.gov, paper contributes to 40 percent of a landfill's contents. This staggering statistics lead to my long – term solution in handling waste. The government should enact a law that makes it mandatory that all Americans must recycle their newspapers. This step alone will reduce the amount of garbage that goes into our landfills by 13 percent (Epa.gov). A department should be created to check for improper disposal of newspapers and provide hefty fines for Americans that do now want to obey this law. It may seem strict but the overall benefits of this enactment would outweigh the initial cry of Americans that feel that this proposal is unfair. After this program has been implemented and the bugs worked out successfully the government should keep adding materials to the "mandatory recycling lists". To think that if we could get a 100% recycling rate of paper, that would be a 40 percent reduction of waste disposal that goes into our landfills. Another aspect of recycling that should be focuses on is the pay–as–you– throw program utilized in many cities today. Factors plaguing every American adult are economic issues because every American strives to survive economically in this world. The pay–as–you–throw program directly affects a consumer's wallet by charging for the amount of waste a consumer disposes of. This program would make Americans more waste conscience. My idea to expand this program is rewarding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Importance of Recycling Today we have a serious problem with pollution, resulting not only soil contamination, environmental, noise or air, we can significantly reduce this impact all being aware and knowing that recycling is reuse; if we make a daily habit will give more life to our planet. On the other hand, if we see further recycling is environmental sustainability and if done properly would take advantage of a more effective way of natural resources. But really know what is recyclable? Is a physical–chemical or mechanical process is to submit to a substance or a product already used to a cycle of total or partial treatment for a commodity or a new product. Glass recycling saved a ton of resources for every ton produced, reduce by 75% mining waste involved in their production and reduce pollution resulting there from by 20%. Plastics The main problem with plastics is due to a completely inappropriate use of it, because it is a very resistant and durable, used to make objects that have use for a very short space of time, which are then thrown into the trash. This is evident with the variety of bags, plastic packaging and disposable products. Plastics are materials of great variety. Although they have a common origin, are polymers made from oil, but its molecular structure varies greatly from one plastic to another. Ferrous scrap Tin cans are so easy to recycle as aluminum, and recycled saves huge amounts of energy and resources. Recycling steel and tin cans saves 74% of the energy used to produce virgin materials; at least 70% to 80% tin is recovered by recycling a can. Cans may be crushed, cut the bottom to save space. Containing aerosol cans are difficult to recycle for its explosive contents; it is preferable not to buy. The scrap metal is recyclable, but should be reasonably free of other materials.

  • 11. Kids In Congo By Annie Oonard Analysis Annie Leonard creates a cohesive and influential argument against man's overwhelming reliance on consumption by integrating numerous personal anecdotes, popular environmental design philosophies, governmental initiatives, and corporations' backward innovation tactics to reaffirm man's need to use their sociological imagination to truly see the world in front of them and fight for a more socially equitable and environmentally sustainable way of life. First, Leonard provides an all–encompassing perspective of corporations and the government as they weave an overarching business safety net of monetarily driven intentions to protect the uncontrolled growth of capitalism in the American economy. The bottom–up, American dream businesses, are overpowered... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She first references many upstream efforts to change the way corporations and industries design, market, and produce their products. For instance, she frequently echoes the claims of the Upcycle's McDonough and Braungart to take the toxins out of the design process in the beginning, like Europe is doing with chlorine removal from paper (Leonard, 54). Leonard also continually references closing the loop for production materials and changing values to ensure design is environmentally and socially sound (Leonard, 84, 103). Biomimicry is also celebrated as an influential and revolutionary design tactic (Leonard, 19). While those efforts are more top–down, Leonard also supports bottom–up, such as Greenmanager (Leonard, 188). The author successfully incorporates many environmental initiatives and efforts into a comprehensive plan for moving forward. She embraces and encourages these efforts, but argues they are just placing more Band–Aids on a leaky pipe, rather than dealing with the problem at hand, they are just not big or powerful enough. Rather, Leonard asserts there must be a civic engagement part to bring the accountability and responsibility back to the government and corporations (175). Leonard makes a great point, but ... Taking a Look at Pavement Recycling 1.0Introduction Nowadays, there world is more aware about materials disposing and there are many concerns regarding the disposal of waste materials and its impact in the environment. So, the elimination process for the materials passes through the optimization of their use in the industrial processes. Existing deteriorated material can be reused; its characteristics can be rehabilitated, recycled and improved. The old material can be used in the same application that it was initially used for, or as part of a new material. 1.1 Recycling in general Recycling is the process of transforming or reusing of waste materials to get new products to benefit the reduction of using fresh materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution and water pollution since that most of the materials are not renewable. The trend nowadays is to reduce the consumption of energy and new materials. As a result of that the world create hierarchy to called 3R of waste which are reduce, reuse and recycle. Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and electronics. Although similar in effect, the composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste such as food or garden waste is considered recycling. 1.2Pavement recycling In recent years the use of recycled materials in pavements has become an increasingly widespread practice. This is especially true for flexible pavements like (HMA) and rigid pavements like Portland cement concrete (PCC) materials that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Mans Effect On The Environment Essay Man's Effect on the Environment 1) SOURCES OF POLLUTION Freshwater Environments : Man pollutes freshwater all over the world in many ways there is much waste and pollution that ends up in rivers. One of the main hazards is called eutrophication, this process becomes enriched with artificial nutrients from fertilisers which run off into the rivers and upset the natural nutrient cycle of the river, lake or pond. The water turns green because of the algae which when they die multifly using up all the oxygen. Similar consequences occur if raw sewage is pumped into a river. Chemical waste from factories dump their un wanted waste into rivers, lakes or ponds as well. One major component that effects the water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this point the oil can seriously damage the beach and it's wildlife eg fish. It can cause brain damage and various mental disabilities. Lead free petrol are now used world wide. Fertilisers Eutrophication from fertilisers running off the fields and into rivers and lakes causes abnormal plant growth. It causes bad tatse, odours and algae and other things like precipitation of calcium carbonate. Treatment in aerobic or anaerobic lagoons can control it. Kris Charik R10D
  • 16. Nitrous Oxides This comes from factories which burn fossil fuels and from car emissions as well. When reacted with sunlight, mosture and oxidants it produces sulphuric and nitric acids. These then get mixed up with the water cycle and fall to earth as Acid Rain. Catalytic Converters are used in cars now to reduce the amount of harmful emissions given off. You can also use cleaner power such as Hydro and Nuclear which would also reduce the amount of harmful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Further to this the report will provide an over–view of the key pieces of Health and Safety legislation within the United Kingdom, as they apply to civil engineering projects. Finally, there will be an analysis and evaluation of the impact of civil engineering work from the perspective of the 'triple bottom... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However they work hand in hand, by keeping to a timescale and without deviating from a design, a budget can be achieved. Civil engineering projects require a team to fulfil work needed to supply a project with the required equipment and materials. This team is regularly made up of five key roles. Project Manager, Main Contractor (the companies project manager of foreman) Lead designer (usually out sourced) Technical Manager (employed by the appointed contractor or working directly for the projects client) Health and Safety Manager (Independent nominee assigned to the project). Each role has expertise in specific fields bringing professional information to the project. The desired result is a proficient smooth running operation, compliant with health and safety regulations. Materials, equipment and labour are well managed to ensure a project is delivered as the design states, on time and economically profitable to all parties. A supply chain can be viewed and implemented in many different ways depending on the industry it is applied to. In any case the depth of planning and organisation results in the quality of the service provided. Involvement by department leaders in the early stages for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Incineration Essay cineration is the process of the destruction of waste by converting the organic material to carbon dioxide and water vapour by fire leaving only the ash and non–combustibles to dispose in the landfill (http://www.saincinerator.com). Ash is the incombustible inorganic residue after the waste has been destructed by means ofincineration. Incineration is another method that is used for reduction of waste in the form of burning waste leaving smaller amount of ash. The incinerators can be in the form of oil, gas, coal fire or when burning high BTU waste such as paper, need no auxiliary fuel (http://www.sainincinerator.com). Incineration can also refer as waste treatment technology, which includes the combustion of waste for recovering energy (http://www.wrfound.org).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... MSWI generates residues such as bottom ashes; particulate matter carried over from the furnace and removed from the flue gas without injection of sorbents, and Air Pollution Control (APC) residues. The aim of this study was to assess the characterization of MSWI from facilities with different air pollution control systems. Analysis of traces metals from ash was performed by two different procedures, which differs according to method used. The objective was to obtain by total digestion attack with results obtained by an extractable digestion procedure, emphasizing differences that can arise depending on digestion protocol performed, which often is not well specified in legal or even scientific papers. To analyse total heavy metal (Zn, Pb, As, Cd, Ni, and Cu, approximately 1g per triplicate of each sample was digested using an HNO3 /HF/HCIO4 mixture in teflon flask. In their results high content of CaO has been confirmed by the analysis. In this study two types of incinerator facilities, first generation (mass burn, electrostatic precipitator as air pollution control system) and second generation (RDF, semi–dry APC control system have been characterized. • 19. Could also be defined as the raw materials from waste, introducing them back into the cycle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... MELTING OF THE POLES Several articles and news as we have shown the poles have been melting, we do not realize the ecological impact that our Earth is suffering, we call home, how animals suffer for the loss of their natural habitat There are already endangered species and endangered species, all animals, plants or even microbes and bacteria are necessary for the life cycle, and we by pure consumerism are destroying the basics for human existence. POLLUTED CITY FULL OF GARBAGE For our way of life in cities tend to consume too many products and use all means of transportation much easier, even small distances. We have not seen the massive amounts ofpollution we put into our environment, in the air, the ground where trash is stored, the water is poisoned with chemicals given off by the trash in large quantities, even with noise! In conclusion I can say that recycling is an effective way to help nature replenish the natural resources to end the excessive amount of garbage, pollution of our environment and improving health as an alternate benefit. It is a basic process we should use at home, is a habit we should have from small, the

  • 21. A Brief Note On Erect An Energy From Waste ( Efw )... 2.0 The Project The proposal is to erect an Energy from Waste (EfW) Incinerator to be sited on the Proposed Location (see Map), while choosing the best possible location on the map, and giving supporting arguments. Incineration is a practical method of disposal that saves a lot of money on transport of waste to landfills and therefore also the carbon footprint that such transport leaves behind. The sheer reduction in the space required to dispose of the 10 percent of waste that it does produce relieves pressure on land, which in urban areas can constitute a big saving (Rulkens, W., 2007). Landfills have never been a pretty site and also give rise to a lot of pests and insects. An incinerating plant will look like any other industrial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This scope of this EIA covers the plant infrastructure construction, the incineration process/ operation of plant, electricity recovery and disposal of ashes. The additional process of delivering the slag and residues of the incineration process to landfill has also been taken into account. A Waste Incinerator which is designed specifically for Energy Recovery generates significant electrical power and thermal energy due to the high calorific value of the waste. The efficiency of energy recovery (production of electricity) is 20%. Material recovery is also achieved in this process, particularly Fe metals. For front–end materials, recovery is 50%, while for back–end materials, it is 5%(Cheng, H.et al., 2010). 2.2 The Process of Incineration In the process of incineration, incinerators reduce the waste by burning it after the incinerator is initially fired up with gas or other combustible material (Hjelmar, 1996). The process is then sustained by the waste itself. Complete waste combustion requires a temperature of 850Вє C for at least two seconds but most plants raise it to higher temperatures to reduce organic substances containing chlorine. Flue gases are then sent to scrubbers which remove all dangerous chemicals from them. To reduce dioxin in the chimneys where they are normally formed, cooling systems are introduced in the chimneys.
