Medical professionals read more articles and spend less time per article than in the past. The future may bring new interfaces like mobile apps, new interactions like article comments and metrics, and greater integration of content into research, teaching, and clinical tools. However, successful new models will still require viable business models like subscriptions, open access, or advertising. Some aspects like the desire to share interests will remain the same.
Effective Publication Practices

A model for developing leadership expertise
This document presents a model for developing expert leaders called WICS, which stands for Wisdom, Intelligence, Creativity, and Synthesized. It argues that wisdom is the most important component of leadership and defines wisdom as balancing short-term and long-term interests through values. The model proposes that expert leaders attain common goods through a balance of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extrapersonal interests using successful intelligence. It also discusses how practical intelligence, tacit knowledge, and wisdom can be developed to improve leadership.

June 8: Designing for Open Pedagogy with CCCOER
Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) for a free and open webinar on Designing for Open Pedagogy. Open Pedagogy was first introduced by Lumen Learning co-founder David Wiley, as a way to capture how the use of OER can change educational practices. He relates that using OER in the same way as traditional textbooks is like driving an airplane down the road – it is missing out on what open can provide for student and teacher collaboration, engagement, and learning.

We will hear from two professors who have not only adopted OER but have redesigned their courses with the principles of open pedagogy. Although reduced cost is what originally attracted them to using OER, involving their students in creating and evaluating OER course materials has significantly increased student engagement and critical thinking and their courses are continually being updated and improved as a result.

Will share her open course design strategy where students in subsequent semesters build on the work of those before them to create an open textbook and ancillary material. Students discuss and decide on how best to present material in the book, what applications are relevant for each topic, and what materials can help other students learn the course content.
• Mike Elmore, Political Science Faculty, Tacoma Community College
Will share how he has engaged students in collaborative writing of an Introduction to Political Science open textbook. His students report that writing assignments take on new meaning when they realize that other people are going to read their work. Not just repeating what they have read or heard in class, they compare their understanding with their peers and collaborate to present their ideas in the best way possible.

Kanban for ODDS

Project Play: Play More, Learn More, Fear Less!
Project Play was a collaborative project between three Wisconsin library systems that provided a free, online program to encourage library staff to explore emerging technologies through self-paced lessons and play. Staff from the participating libraries collaborated to develop the curriculum, select topics, and track participation. The program was successful in bringing staff up to speed on new tools and making technology exploration a positive experience, though it required significant resources to run. As a result, the project continues in a less intensive format.

Here are a few tips for conducting a successful Community Dialogue:
- Invite a diverse group of community stakeholders - include representatives from schools, afterschool programs, civic groups, businesses, healthcare organizations, etc. The goal is to get input from people who can help you reach and engage underserved audiences.
- Clearly communicate the purpose and goals upfront. Explain that you want an open discussion to understand community needs and how the library can better serve them.
- Ask open-ended questions to spark discussion. For example, "What STEM opportunities do you think are lacking for youth in our community?"
- Actively listen without being defensive. Thank people for their honest feedback.

Distributed anything is hard. We have tons of knowledge and experience with distributed teams in our community. Tim Wise will present how to enable distributed agile teams. He will also facilitate a negation game to help mine our community of knowledge to help form your opinion on when, where, and how to use distributed agile teams. Tim is neither a proponent or opponent of distributed teams. It is another tool in the toolbox. Together we will seek a common truth.
Tim has worked with companies using distributed agile via scrum and kanban and hybrids of each with teams collocated, distributed across the street, the state, the country, the oceans, and the world.
