Atlanta scrum user group presentation on 09/25/2013
Check out my blog @ http://ow.ly/picrk for the actual games that I used and a recap.
Distributed anything is hard. We have tons of knowledge and experience with distributed teams in our community. Tim Wise will present how to enable distributed agile teams. He will also facilitate a negation game to help mine our community of knowledge to help form your opinion on when, where, and how to use distributed agile teams. Tim is neither a proponent or opponent of distributed teams. It is another tool in the toolbox. Together we will seek a common truth.
Tim has worked with companies using distributed agile via scrum and kanban and hybrids of each with teams collocated, distributed across the street, the state, the country, the oceans, and the world.

Distributed team is always a big headache to software development. In this presentation we will discuss what are the key elements of a distributed team in terms of success, and share a case study.
Remotely Agile? Effective Interaction with Distributed TeamsDorinne Hammons
Love it or hate it, Agile methodologies are all over the development world, and UX Designers and Information Architects are integrating into Agile development teams. Agile’s focus on face-to-face communication can increase collaboration between IA’s, UX, and developers, which can be great! But how can you make that collaboration work effectively when everyone isn’t in the same room - or even the same country? Can it work for co-located teams? What about teams with flexible work-from-home policies? Or teams with one remote contractor? What if YOU are the only remote team member?
Come hear lessons learned from 10 years of working as a UX Designer with different types of distributed teams, and learn about some tools and techniques to use to make interaction easier when some (or all!) of your team is remote.
Join us for a highly interactive and customized Agile Webinar that will uncover the most prominent, common and troubling roadblocks experienced by organizations trying to adopt agile and will offer solutions to overcome these obstructions!
Nailing Distributed Development With Effective Collaboration - Matt RyallAtlassian
Distributed teams put additional strains on what is fundamentally a communication and collaboration challenge in building software. Matt Ryall, senior development manager for Confluence, shares his experience on how Atlassian and several of our clients are using collaboration tools like Confluence and HipChat to help overcome geographic boundaries, and ship great software on time.

Agile Anywhere in the 21st Century: Setting up distributed teams to be effectiveAgileDenver
This presentation will focus on the topic of working in a distributed agile team. We’ll go over terminology (remote vs near shore vs offshore vs distributed vs satellite etc) and I will share three different examples of distributed teams I’ve worked on and how we managed to be agile with our practices around pairing, knowledge sharing, and minimizing upfront design.
We will discuss why the notion of distributed teams is becoming more and more relevant for modern organizations, what advantages and drawbacks exist, and what leadership needs to carefully evaluate when asking if distributed is right for their teams.
Collaboration is More Than Communication – JIRA Agile - Xavier MoreraAtlassian
Collaboration is defined as "the action of working with someone to produce or create something." Yet, many confuse communicating with collaborating. True collaboration gives you and your project an edge by aligning efforts towards a clear objective. I'll show how teams can achieve true collaboration with JIRA Agile.

How to Plan and Execute a Go-to-market Campaign for an Atlassian Add-onAtlassian
When it comes to releasing a new add-on to the fast-growing Atlassian Marketplace, building a great product is not the whole story. To have a successful launch and achieve sustainable early customer growth, you need to make a concerted effort both before and after release day to connect your product with those it offers value to. Davin Pukulis, Director of Marketing from marketplace vendor K15t Software will be sharing his insights on how to do just that. This practical guide will explore the strategy and tactics of a recently executed add-on go-to-market campaign, from initial concept on through the awareness, consideration, and decision phases of the buyer's journey funnel.

Scrummaster Needed Desperately at 2016 Scrum AustraliaBernd Schiffer
There is a lot of reluctance within organisations to place ScrumMasters, let alone to spend money to hire them. Surely this role can be done by one of the developers, right? After all, it’s only a minor role, isn’t it? Far from it! The ScrumMaster is a full-time role. Without it, who can take care of the agile process on behalf of a busy Scrum team?
One way to help teams and management understand the value of the ScrumMaster’s role is to show them the volume and importance of tasks a ScrumMaster can fulfil, and the consequences of what happens if nobody takes care of these tasks. This session not only presents the 42 tasks of a ScrumMaster’s role but will clearly show that every Scrum team needs a ScrumMaster.
Epic Champions - Better Software Through Empowered EngineersAtlassian
How often has your engineering team been given an Epic to work on complete with user stories specifying grandeur designs and technical solutions? More often than not, engineers need to rip this apart to make it technically feasible. As an engineering leader at Hootsuite, Tyler Brown recognized this problem and responded by creating a concept called "Epic Champions". Epic Champions enables engineers to own an Epic from initial ideation through delivery and work with product and design to make the feature hit the mark every time. In this session Tyler will walk you through the Epic Champions concept and teach you how to trust and empower engineers to ultimately build higher quality software that truly meets customers needs.

Agile From the Top Down: Executives & Leadership Living Agile by Jon StahlLeanDog
I believe that executives must practice what they preach. If they want teams to be transparent and agile, they need to practice themselves and lead by example. This talk will share some Agile & Lean techniques, applied in a new way, to help organizations understand their constraints so they can transparently carry forward their journey to becoming Agile. “Seeing the Whole” includes customers, projects, applications, people, leadership, financials and Standard Work. We will propose creating a BVR (Big (I mean big) Visual Room), refactoring the PMO and suggest some practices to help support this journey. Executives are challenged to lead by example and be transparent. - Jon Stahl

This annual survey of retail trends from the business innovation team at PSFK Labs captures and contextualizes the early stages of a seismic shift that is changing the face of the retail landscape.
Big-box retailers like Best Buy and Walmart are beginning to feel the heat as sales decline in the face of stiffer competition from e-commerce giants like Amazon. 'Showrooming' is the new reality. Shoppers are more educated than ever before and the ability to check prices on the fly has resulted in increased commoditization and a rethinking of how brands and retailers go about providing a differentiated offering. The pressures that companies like Amazon and Alice.com are exerting on the marketplace have forced traditional retailers to contemplate a multi-channel approach to online, mobile and bricks-and-mortar sales.
PSFK's Future of Retail Report shows that a hallmark of this changing retail environment is the savvier shopper, who takes advantage of technology, is prepared to offer their personal data for a better experience, and has come to expect contextually relevant recommendations. They are actively engaged, want a say in what products get made, will evangelize offerings to get a better price for themselves and their friends, and want to be rewarded for sharing their knowledge and expertise.
In our latest version of the Future of Retail report, PSFK explores the new retail reality, taking a deeper look in the trends that are driving the change in shopper behaviors and expectations as defined by Retail on Demand and the New Brand Champion.

Prototyping Accessibility - WordCamp Europe 2018Adrian Roselli
Learn some fundamentals of accessibility and how it can benefit you (whether future you from aging or you after something else limits your abilities). We’ll review differing abilities, generate (minimal) user stories and personas, discuss best practices for design and development, prototype some ideas (on paper), and discuss where to get help. This isn’t intended to be a deep dive into technologies, but more of an overall primer for those who aren’t sure where to start with accessibility nor how it helps them.
In this scrum gathering talk I introduced some common issues in distributed teams. I used an exercise to generate working agreements for distributed teams call the negation exercise. Additionally, there are a few tool discussion slides and a great communication kata to help get your teams to a better state of flow.

Getting Started with Architecture Decision RecordsMichael Keeling
Documenting architecture design decisions is commonly considered a good practice and yet many teams don't take the time to write down the decisions they make. In our experience this happens for a few reasons: documentation is rejected as being too heavyweight, documentation has little influence since it is typically out of sight and out of mind, and many developers don’t know what to document. Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) address many of these problems by capturing design decisions in a simple, lightweight templates that is stored close to repositories used by stakeholders -- often in the same repository as code affected by the ADR.
In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to write effective ADRs and how to overcome road bumps teams often experience when first getting started with ADRs. By the end of this session you will have the skills you need to champion ADRs and help your team start (or improve) your design decision log.

Memorandum Of Association Constitution of Company.pptseri bangash
www.seribangash.com
A Memorandum of Association (MOA) is a legal document that outlines the fundamental principles and objectives upon which a company operates. It serves as the company's charter or constitution and defines the scope of its activities. Here's a detailed note on the MOA:
Contents of Memorandum of Association:
Name Clause: This clause states the name of the company, which should end with words like "Limited" or "Ltd." for a public limited company and "Private Limited" or "Pvt. Ltd." for a private limited company.
https://seribangash.com/article-of-association-is-legal-doc-of-company/
Registered Office Clause: It specifies the location where the company's registered office is situated. This office is where all official communications and notices are sent.
Objective Clause: This clause delineates the main objectives for which the company is formed. It's important to define these objectives clearly, as the company cannot undertake activities beyond those mentioned in this clause.
www.seribangash.com
Liability Clause: It outlines the extent of liability of the company's members. In the case of companies limited by shares, the liability of members is limited to the amount unpaid on their shares. For companies limited by guarantee, members' liability is limited to the amount they undertake to contribute if the company is wound up.
https://seribangash.com/promotors-is-person-conceived-formation-company/
Capital Clause: This clause specifies the authorized capital of the company, i.e., the maximum amount of share capital the company is authorized to issue. It also mentions the division of this capital into shares and their respective nominal value.
Association Clause: It simply states that the subscribers wish to form a company and agree to become members of it, in accordance with the terms of the MOA.
Importance of Memorandum of Association:
Legal Requirement: The MOA is a legal requirement for the formation of a company. It must be filed with the Registrar of Companies during the incorporation process.
Constitutional Document: It serves as the company's constitutional document, defining its scope, powers, and limitations.
Protection of Members: It protects the interests of the company's members by clearly defining the objectives and limiting their liability.
External Communication: It provides clarity to external parties, such as investors, creditors, and regulatory authorities, regarding the company's objectives and powers.
https://seribangash.com/difference-public-and-private-company-law/
Binding Authority: The company and its members are bound by the provisions of the MOA. Any action taken beyond its scope may be considered ultra vires (beyond the powers) of the company and therefore void.
Amendment of MOA:
While the MOA lays down the company's fundamental principles, it is not entirely immutable. It can be amended, but only under specific circumstances and in compliance with legal procedures. Amendments typically require shareholder

11. What did I miss?
• A bunch of things
• Your turn!
12. The Negation Game
Description - This is a game of discovery.
Instead of asking how we can make things better,
we'll ask how we can make things
horrible. Sometimes it's easier and can even be a
little fun to be negative.
13. Example
How can we make our pair programming partner
miserable?
• We can refrain from taking a bath.
• We won't brush our teeth.
14. Negation
Our original horrible ideas…
• We can refrain from taking a bath
• We won't brush our teeth
Become good rules…
• We will take a bath
• We will brush our teeth
15. Negation
After Negation
• Establish “rules”
• Try to get to a shared understanding or state
• Prioritize the shared understanding
• Could produce action
16. Game Agreements
• Be respectful, don't go too far
• Take turns
• Time boxed to 10 minutes
• Write big!
• Only 1 “ridiculous” answer allowed

18. Line up Line up Everybody Line up
Arrange yourselves from 1 to 10
• 1 means that you would never use distributed
teams
• 10 means that you would always use distributed
teams

20. The Negation Game - Results
Ideally, given this context, we will have a working
agreement for different perspectives on how we
want to treat others.
• We have been the distributed person
• We have interacted with the distributed person
• We have all been distributed
• We have had a distributed “twin”
21. King for a Day - Results
We have been a CIO that is struggling to
determine why we are or why we are not doing
distributed agile
23. Why are you communicating?
• Privacy
• Team Collaboration
• Collective Wisdom
– Documentation
– Code
– Test Cases
– Process
24. Higher Bandwidth is Better
• Face to face
• High bandwidth, high resolution, large screen, hi-fi,
always on connection
• Low bandwidth, low resolution, small screen, low-fi,
dial / setup costs
• High quality voice only
• VOIP with poor equipment
• IM, text, chat
• Wiki, discussion boards
• E-mail
Voice
F2F
Email
25. How are you communicating?
Since face to face may be out. Let’s try some
alternatives.
• Always on window for the teams
• Wide angle web cams for team rooms
• Flat Screen TVs for both locations
• Small webcams for every person
• Online white boarding
• High quality conferencing
• Skype or another alternative
26. Working Agreements
• Agree on the preferred mode of face-to-face
• Display Good/favorite and bad modes (texting,
home phone, cell phone, email) and times of day
/ after-hours
– Preferences will differ per person
27. Quick Wins
• Put the distributed team members on every
speed dial for the home team
• Using Outlook? Display time zones on the
calendar
• Have a clock with each time zone on every
desktop and in the taskbar
28. The Communication Kata
Goal of reducing the time it takes to hold a distributed
meeting
• Before you start find a
buddy
• Time box to 4 minutes
• Begin: Schedule a
video conference with
audio
• Call in
• Share your screen
• Share an online
whiteboard
• You draw
• They draw
• Save the drawing
• Shut down the call
• Shut down the video
29. Building Trust
• Visits with social activities
• understand realities of life in other locale
• Deliberately get over communication gap / fear
30. Some Cool Tools
• planningpoker.com (everyone should have this)
• ScribLink.com (Online white board)
• Mural.ly (sticky notes, images, go visit, it’s cool)
• Board.net (Collaborative writing with
etherpad.org)
• Scribblar.com (Online white board) -free for 2
users

Story: I have been distributed in the same room with no walls with another person because they would not talk.
So everyone on your team speaks english. Can they write in english.
Distance amplifiesEvery miscommunication causes a defectcreates reworkcosts timecauses delay breeds mistrustLess value is delivered and costs riseDependencies increase risk and cost

Playing along with the negation theme. How can we disable a team? What are we disabling? We can not give them ways to communicate We can put people in between them We can put process in between them
Figure out the motive
Things you can do right now
Story from Andrew: Remote PO was a VP. Team members were “afraid” or hesitant to call him (i.e. at his home or on his personal mobile). So, we made mugshot of VP in t-shirt with phone number on it. He personally gave each person a copy and said to call me. Also handed out wallet size versions. He made an effort to call each person. Also had a contest to color/decorate the black & white mug shot. Best drawing would get a prize that would be valuable to that person (which means he’d have to get to know each person enough to know what to give them)!
