Intro to surface Loading and Underground Transportation
Skill Focused on: Mineral Transportation
Resources: Marker, Board, Multimedia
Text book: Introduction to investigate Rocks parameters & Techniques developments
Methodology:
First I’ll give brief introduction about Minerals Extraction from mines sites.
Mineral Transportation
In the mining sector, mineral transportation refers to the movement of extracted minerals from the mine
site to processing plants, storage facilities, or markets. It is a crucial aspect of mining operations and
involves several key considerations. Here are some important points related to mineral transportation in
the mining sector:
Haulage within Mining Operations: After minerals are extracted from the mine, they need
to be transported within the mining site itself. This typically involves the use of heavy-duty
trucks, loaders, or conveyor systems to move the minerals from the extraction point to
stockpiles, crushers, or processing plants within the mine area.
Off-Site Transportation: Once the minerals are processed or prepared for transport, they
are moved from the mining site to their designated destinations. This transportation can
involve various modes depending on factors such as distance, infrastructure availability, and
the nature of the minerals being transported.
 Truck Transport: Trucking is a common method for transporting minerals over
short to medium distances. It is flexible, allowing for access to various locations,
including processing plants, rail terminals, or ports.
 Rail Transport: Railways are often utilized for long-distance mineral
transportation. Mining companies may have dedicated rail lines or use existing rail
networks to transport minerals to processing plants, ports, or other facilities. Rail
transport is efficient for bulk cargo, and specialized railcars may be used to transport
specific minerals, such as iron ore or coal.
 Conveyor Systems: Conveyor belts are extensively used in mining operations for
the continuous and efficient transport of bulk minerals. Conveyor systems can move
minerals over short or long distances, often connecting the mine site to processing
plants or loading facilities. They are particularly useful when there are obstacles or
challenging terrains to overcome.
 Slurry Pipelines: In some cases, finely ground minerals suspended in water or other
liquids are transported through slurry pipelines. This method is commonly used for
transporting minerals like iron ore concentrates or coal slurries over long distances,
providing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.
 Maritime Transport: For mining operations located near water bodies or coastal
regions, maritime transport is employed for exporting minerals or delivering them to
processing plants. Bulk carriers or specialized vessels are used to transport large
volumes of minerals to international markets or domestic destinations.
Infrastructure and Logistics: Adequate infrastructure is crucial for efficient mineral
transportation in the mining sector. This includes well-maintained roads, rail networks, ports,
and storage facilities. Mining companies often invest in building or upgrading infrastructure
to support their transportation needs. Effective logistics management is also essential to
optimize routes, cargo handling, and scheduling to ensure timely deliveries.
Safety and Environmental Considerations: Mineral transportation in the mining sector
must adhere to strict safety regulations to protect workers, equipment, and the environment.
Safety measures may include proper load securement, vehicle maintenance, and adherence to
transportation regulations. Environmental considerations focus on minimizing dust
emissions, preventing spills or leaks, and ensuring compliance with environmental standards
during transportation.
Efficient mineral transportation is essential for the profitability and success of mining operations. It
requires careful planning, coordination, and adherence to safety and environmental regulations to ensure
the smooth flow of minerals from the mine site to their intended destinations.
Activity – 1 Explain mineral transportation.
Activity – 2 write down modes of transportation in detail.
Success Criteria:
 Assessment plan
A couple of question will be asked from students to clarify the understanding of the whole class, for
example
 What do you understand by Resources of minerals in Pakistan?
 Discussion on Different techniques of mines transportation.
C.W: Write down the intro to minerals transportation.
H.W: Write On importance of safety at Minerals transformational channels.
