to put together a list of the
7 DEADLY SINS IN VISUAL DESIGN
DEADLY SIN #1
Inappropriate use of colors while contrasting your background and typeface
Ensure that the copy is rendered with sufficient contrast against the background. Remember: Your job is to make reading a delight, not a pain!
Sin Rating:
Punishment: We ought to make you read a 50,000 word essay on a blue background and red typeface.
DEADLY SIN #2
Using too many typefaces and weights
Unless you’re designing a circus billboard, stay clear of using more than 3 typefaces Remember this: When in doubt, use Helvetica!
Sin Rating:
Punishment: A one way ticket to design hell guaranteed -or- Your Certificate of Graduation reprinted using Comic Sans Font!
DEADLY SIN #3
Badly cut icons and logos
Strictly avoid a jaggedly cut visual or one that has been covered up with a lot of feather or using artwork has not been used in its native resolution. It makes the logo look blurry!
Sin Rating:
Punishment: We’ll let the brand manager decide the punishment for this!
DEADLY SIN #4
Poor navigation on websites
Remember: Have a ‘Back’ button! ALWAYS! Making navigation easier ensures that your customers spend more time on your site/app
Sin Rating:
Punishment: How about sending you to design hell without the option of coming back?
DEADLY SIN #5
Creating non responsive designs
Ensure your content is readable across all devices – PCs, laptops, tablets, phones and everything in between! If they cant read it on their phone, they probably wont!
Sin Rating:
Punishment: Pinch yourself until you begin to respond. Wake up from this nightmare and correct it!
DEADLY SIN #6
Taking that Photoshop filter tool to town
Use the filter tool sparingly, not for ALL images! If you can’t find the right filter to suit your design, avoid retro fitting one.
Sin Rating:
Punishment: We’ll filter you to design hell. Don’t worry!
DEADLY SIN #7
Overplaying your design hand
Don’t let design overshadow the content. Remember this: Your primary objective is to ensure people read your stuff, not just admire the great design!
Sin Rating:
Punishment: Ugh! You choose your punishment. We’re too tired to hand one out for this sin.
