10 tips on how to make a casual game of success for the iPhone and Android.Rafael Rodrigues
We are finally living a moment of democratization of game development. A game no longer needs to be a super production to be profitable and that is why casual games may be a way for those who are already experienced and for those who are only beginners.

The world is being changed fundamentally by AI and we are constantly faced with newspaper headlines about its harmful effects. However, there is also the potential to both ameliorate theses harms and use the new abilities of AI to transform society for the good. Can you make the difference?
You could be a professional graphic designer and still make mistakes. There is always the possibility of human error. On the other hand if you’re not a designer, the chances of making some common graphic design mistakes are even higher. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where this blog comes in. To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.
Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
2. Style sheet
I chose the colour scheme with a focus around yellow
and red. This is because they are prominent in a desert
setting and in old wild west films. Furthermore the
colour scheme is not as bold as some RTS games and is
more subtle to make the game more serious instead of
overly cartoony like League of Legends. The blue and the
orange contrast each other which is why I plan on using
blue as a way to make the units in the game stand out
from the yellow and orange backgrounds, similar to
Battlefield 1. The Bright green in the age of empires
screenshot will be different to my game as the green is
bold and vibrant however all of the green in my game
will be dull and not draw attention to not overpower the
blue and yellow that is focused in the colour scheme
3. Style sheet
The pixel art is from a top down perspective, this means that the characters can be seen from
above. However I did not make a strait 90 degree camera angle as it lacks the detail that a ¾
point view allows. This can be seen in the Age of Empires that is from above but still has the
illusion of 3D. This can also be seen in the destroyed building and shows the top of the house
and the side at the same time with the camera being at a 45 degree angle. I use this camera
angle for the hole game and it will not change, this is because it would be extremely hard to re
draw all of the pixel art for a different gradient and angle. Furthermore this means that you can
more the units but also see them interact and fight the other units with the detail of a 2D side
scroller game.
4. Style sheet
The pixel art is similar to the original command and conqueror games and for the most
part takes a serious approach to the design and pixel art. Firstly the proportions of all
of the units are to scale, even in my animation style with paticularly wide but short
bodies everything is relative to each other. This means that the game takes on a more
serious theme making game platy more realistic and serious. This markets the game at
older more mature audience unlike a game suck as League of Legends. The realistic
proportions can also be seen in castle crusaders 2 and attempts to replicate real life,
however it does so more than my game that is in a cartoon form none the less. The
actual art style is very minimalistic this is because the game is designed to be played
on a macro scale meaning the units and art will be seen from a large distance away.
This means it is till interesting and detailed due to the large variety and amount of
units in the game while still being a simple design. I will incorporate more detailed art
in the form of the NPC that talks in the bottom corner.
7. Sound Effects/Dialogue
Sound Effect How You Could Make It
Gun Shot Placing a grass on a table quickly to make the bang
sound effect with a sharp thud.
Horse Moving on sand Copyright free recording of a horse walking
Background taking for tavern Talking in public place muffled in after effects and
sound reduced to very faint
Death/Taken damage vocal
sound.
Vocal sound effect by student of a grunt/ cry of pain
in a silent room
Explosion Crumpling some paper overlapped with the glass
thud for the gunshot.
Wood Breaking (building) Pencil snapping and being dropped
Wind Background Noise Outdoor wind recording or a fan blowing against a
microphone
Walking on sand Copyright free recording of a person walking on sand
Menu Sounds (beeps and
Snaps)
Beeps from text alert or other mechanical beeps
from a smart phone/ ruler snapping
Ambient Noises (piano/ eyrie
noises)
Recording of a f sharp on a keyboard/ beepbox effect

9. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
USB Corruption and data loss. To back up all work on Google drive after each
day so that if any work does not save or is
corrupted a previous version of the work can be
retrieved.
USB is missing or is unreachable. continue in other files and areas of the work
until the USB is returned. Alternatively back up
all work on Google drive after each day so that
if any work does not save or is corrupted a
previous version of the work can be retrieved.
Missing a day due to illness When returning to college to be caught up on
all of the work. This can be achieved by asking
class mates for a recap on the day and the work
that they where working on and completing it
at home. If the work is Photoshop work then
you cannot complete it at home if you don’t
have the software
Public Transport makes you late IF the busses are late there is nothing you can
do until you are in college where you will need
to catch up on work. However if the busses are
cancelled you can seek out other means of
transport as soon as you can.
Work is stuck on a different computer Keep your work on Google drive or on a USB
memory stick. If the work is still unretrivable
then continue on other work.
10. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
electric shock from computer Do not touch or change any of the cables on
the computers or macs if they do not work call
a tutor or technician. Do not kick the wires from
under the table.
Sitting down for too long If working for 8 hours plus it can be unhealthy
for the pupil to not eat or drink or move for an
extended period of time. At breaks eat and
drink and walk around at lunch.
backache from being incorrectly seated When sitting at a computer make sure the
backrest is correctly adjusted so it is supporting
your spine.
eye damage looking at a screen at a high brightness in poor
lighting conditions can lead to strain on the
eyes If prolonged may develop into a headache
or damage to the eyes.
