The energy industry is rapidly evolving to take advantage of renewable resources and Western Power is embracing new technologies that will improve service and reliability to our customers. New and improving technologies such as solar, wind, wave and most importantly batteries are changing the way we think about the delivery and storage of electricity. One of these developments is the microgrid, which is essentially a small scale power grid that can operate independently (in ‘island mode’) or connect with the main electrical grid – think of a small suburb, or estate, that shares electricity and the cost of the infrastructure. A microgrid needs to control the flow of electricity of low or medium voltage, but does not need connection to a centralised generation or transmission network. Western Power has trialled the world’s first microgrid project that combines wave energy, solar (photovoltaic) energy, a desalination plant, and energy storage that connects to our large electricity network.
Thair demonstrates extensive engineering experience focused on power systems planning and real-time operation. This includes experience in load, generation and microgrids grid connection, renewable energies, transmission networks planning and stability. Addressing climate change is one of the key technological challenges of the present and
the near future. With about a half of the energy being used in the built environment and
with a huge proportion being used by the transportation sector, the construction
industry will be a very important player. The paper presents the general context of the
climate change discussion. It identifies construction industry as a double winner in this
process, potentially benefiting both from the changes in nature as well as from
governments' measures. There are many things construction industry can accomplish
without much additional research, even more, however, if it moves beyond the current
state of the art, particularly in building automation and the use of ICT throughout the
building's life cycle. The paper concludes by identifying the emerging research and
development agenda in the field constriction informatics.

A one day symposium on zero/low carbon sustainable homes took place at The University of Nottingham on the 24th October, 2012. The event offered professionals within the construction industry a unique opportunity to gain added and significant insight into the innovations, policies and legislation which are driving the construction of zero/low carbon energy efficient homes both here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. It explored solutions to sustainability issues “beyond” the zero carbon agenda. BZCH followed on from the successful ‘Towards Zero Carbon Housing’ symposium the University hosted in 2007. This event is part of the Europe Wide Ten Act10n project which is supported by the European Commission Intelligent Energy Europe.

The following principles must be respected when specifying insulation
products for low energy buildings:
Firstly design the building for low thermal losses
Then, choose insulation products and solutions fit for the applications
and, following this, ensure the longevity of the thermal performance over the
lifetime of the building through choosing quality materials with certified
performance levels.
Finally, the environmental performance of suitable insulation products
should be determined using an overall life cycle methodology
There is an increasing trend to develop factory-made durable high quality
building envelope elements combining high insulation level, high air-
tightness and fast erection speed
