Thermal Insulation Understanding and Techniques
1. DOMESTIC THERMAL INSULATION SYSTEM
for better livingâŚ
⢠Current global scenario
⢠Why DTIS ???
⢠What is DTIS ???
⢠How it will work ???
⢠Current practice & some insulating materials

4. ⢠According to a report by India Meteorological
Department (IMD), 40% of the total deaths
were due to severe heat wave, which claimed
more than 700 lives in the country, with
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh together
recording the maximum deaths i.e more than
400.(2016 data)
⢠Gujarat and Maharashtra registered 87 and 43
deaths due to heat waves respectively.
5. ⢠Thermal insulation is retention of temperature
with in the buildings irrespective of the change
in temperature outside the building.
⢠It maintains the comfort conditions during
summer the thermal insulation should not
allow the heat to transfer from out side â and
during winters the heat should not leave the
building thus giving comfort for the users.
⢠This results in lot of fuel saving and
maintenance cost.
6. ⢠Thermal insulation in building results in living
and working indoor- conditions because it keeps
the room cool in summer and warmer in winter.
⢠Due to the Thermal insulation, the demand of
heating in winter and cooling in summer is
considerably reduced.
⢠The use of thermal insulation material further
reduces the risk of water freezing in case of pipes
and heat loss of hot water system.

9. ⢠Have you ever wonder why polar bear has
a thick body fur ?
⢠Why penguins has thick size of flesh on
body?
⢠Why we sweating in warmness?
10. Thermal insulation meansâŚ..
⢠Transfer of heat or cold from one layer to
another, which is in contact of heat or
cold emitting object
11.
12. ⢠Maintaining acceptable temperatures in
buildings by various methods to achieve
comfort for the inhabitant.
⢠In other words, keeping room
comfortably cool and warm.
13. Heat transfer takes place in following
waysâŚ..
Conduction: Transmission of heat through material.
The amount of heat transfer by conduction is
depends on :-
1) Temperature difference
2) Thickness of solid medium
3) Area of exposure
4) Time for which the heat flow takes place
5) Conductivity of the material
13
14. Important laws of heat transfer
⢠Heat flows from the higher level to lower
level.
⢠Heat transfer takes place form the hotter area
to the cooler zones.
⢠Heat flows as per the capacity of the building
materials or units like floors, walls, roofs,
doors, windows.
⢠In summer the heat transfer is from the out
side to inside and in winters the process is
reversed.
17. Internal Treatment
⢠To provide Air gap for under exposed surface of
roof by fixing false ceiling under the roof.
⢠Ventilation abutting the roof also helps for passing
the heat out of the room.
⢠Installing false ceiling with thermal insulating
materials.
⢠Paste suitable adhesive and sealers at inside
surface of the exposed roof for fixing Light
insulating materials. Some insulating materials are
glass wool, fiber glass wool, mineral wool,
thermocol, rubber foam etc.
18.
19.
20. External Treatment
⢠Shining and heat reflecting coating may be applied on
the top of exposed roof like paint.
⢠These coatings can serve dual purpose of water
proofing and heat reflection.
⢠In case of flat roof you can create air space on top of
roof by placing asbestos sheet on brick pillars.
⢠The surface of flat roof may be kept cool by storing
water on roof.
⢠âMud Phuskaâ, which is a mixture of clay soil, wood
shaving, and water, should be laid on exposed roof
acts as thermal insulation.
