Mise en scène refers to different technical elements used in making a film such as lighting and sound, both of which you have already analyzed in this course. The term also encompasses the role of actors in a film, their physical positioning and movements within the frame, as well as the different styles and types of acting.
You can classify an acting category using only one film as reference, but these categories are subject to change. Each new role helps to clarify or shift an actor’s designation. Do some actors always fall into the same category? How can actors change from category to category? Does genre have any effect on the acting styles present in a given film?

- 6. Do you like horror films and stories? Why do people go to see horror movies? How do you explain their popularity? What do the film excerpts we just saw have in common? What characteristics of the Gothic genre do you notice in these clips? How are horror and the Gothic related?
- 9. What makes these stories and films classic? Do they incorporate the qualities we’ve listed? How do the elements we’ve listed build fear?
- 10. Read the essay as a class Divide into five groups Mine your paragraph for information about the genre Share what you’ve learned
- 11. Are horror movies, stories and novels a genre worthy of study in an academic class? Why or why not? Can a horror film or story be considered on the same artistic plane as, say, a play by Shakespeare? When is horror art, rather than just terrifying entertainment?
- 12. 1. Explain how the piece fits into the horror/Gothic genre as we have defined it 2. Analyze how the author uses the elements of the genre to create fear and/or suspense 3. Extrapolate as to why at the time the genre wasn’t taken seriously and why now we consider it a part of the canon
