5S is a system for organizing workspaces developed in Japan. It consists of 5 principles: Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. The methodology involves removing unnecessary items, organizing necessary items by frequency of use, cleaning and maintaining the workspace, standardizing processes, and sustaining the system. Implementing 5S results in workplaces that are easier to manage, have smooth workflow without obstructions, minimize accidents and mistakes, increase space, improve productivity, quality and safety, and motivate employees. Examples show the transformation of workspaces through applying 5S principles.
