This study compared the antidiabetic effects of methanolic extracts of leaves from Abroma augusta and seeds from Syzygium cumini in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Rats were treated with either plant extract at 300 mg/kg body weight daily for 7 days. Treatment with both plant extracts significantly reduced blood glucose levels and increased body weight compared to untreated diabetic rats. Histopathological analysis also showed improvements in treated rats compared to changes seen in untreated diabetic rats. The results indicate that both Abroma augusta and Syzygium cumini have antidiabetic properties and warrant further study of their active components for potential antidiabetic drug development.

Objective:Many of the available therapies for diabetes have a number of serious adverse effects; therefore the search for more effective and safer hypoglycaemic agents becomes a paramount. This research was set to investigate the antidiabetic potential and cytoprotective effect of ethanolic root extract of Salacianitida on alloxan induced hyperglyceamic rats. Method:Acute toxicity and phytochemical constituents were evaluated using standardized methods. The study lasted for a period of thirty days comprising of two phases: induction phase and treatment phase. Thirty animals were grouped into five groups of six rats each. Group 1 and 2 serve as normal and toxic control respectively while groups 3, 4, and 5 were treated with 750, 1500mg of S.nitidaand 5mg glibenclamide respectively. The BGL, food and fluid intake was monitored daily while the body weight was measured on weekly. The last day of the study after an overnight fast, the animals were loaded with glucose and the OGTT measured prior to and at 30minutes interval for two hours after which the animals were sacrificed under ether anaesthesia and the organs isolated for histological examination. Results/Conclusion:The results of the present study indicate that S.nitida possessantidiabetic potentials and cytoprotective effect noted in its significant percentage reduction in the glucose level, slight increase in body weight and restoration of the toxic organs to normal.

Diabetic rats had significant increased (P˂0.05)cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and artherogenic index (AI). Treatment of experimental rats with 150 mg/kg bw. of aqueous extractsof plants significantly decrease (P˂0.05) the levels of cholesterol and LDL in OG and BO treated groups when compare with the control. Computed artherogenic index was significantly reduced (P˂0.05) in AV treated group when compared to the control. Aqueous extracts also significantly (P˂0.05) alter serum concentrations of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in a similar manner with metformin treated group. Result showed that decrease in plasma glucose was in the order IB˃OG˃BO˃AV. All plant extracts possess antidiabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic effects and were able to ameliorate the weight loss observed in diabetic rats

Cissus quadrangularis L. (hadjod) and Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (fenugreek) plant parts are used for fracture healing and as an antidiabetic agent, respectively in traditional medicine. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of C. quadrangularis stem bark extract (CQ) and T. foenum-graecum seed extract (TFG) therapy for the treatment of type I diabetes induced osteopenia. Alloxan (dissolved in 0.1 M citrate buffer (pH = 4.5); intraperitoneally injected @ 130 mg/kg body weight) induced type I diabetic rats were treated with individual and combined doses of ethanol extracts of CQ and TFG for consecutive 30 days @ 250 and 500 mg per kg body weight, orally. Insulin (0.5 IU/kg body weight) was chosen as standard. Body weight and fasting blood glucose were recorded. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) analysis of the femur and tibia were performed using micro-computed tomography (µCT) scan to measure histomorphometric parameters of trabecular and cortical regions and bone mineral density (BMD). Elevated level of fasting blood glucose was restored to the vehicle-treated group after treatment with CQ and TFG. Both the extracts significantly improved trabecular histomorphometric parameters, viz. BMD, percent bone volume, trabecular number, trabecular separation, connection density. Cortical mean total cross-sectional bone area, cross-sectional thickness, mean total cross-sectional tissue area were comparable to the vehicle-treated group. CQ and TFG combination therapy showed a marked improvement in bone microarchitecture and can be given together as a potential alternative medicine to insulin for prevention of type I diabetes induced osteopathy. Therefore, it can be considered in the management of diabetic osteopathy in humans.

Increased oxidative stress has been suggested as an early event in the development of the metabolic syndrome and, as such, might contribute to disease progression.
This study investigated the effect of protein isolate from leaf extract of Vernonia amygdalina in diabetic rats. Thirty (30) adults male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six (6) groups of five (5) each based on their body weight. Diabetes was induced with administration of alloxan, 150 mg/kg body weight (i.p). Group A served as the control and received 1 mL/kg body weight of 5% ethanol being solvent used, Group B received 1 mL alloxan containing 150 mg/kg only. Group C, D, E and F were respectively alloxanized but treated with 1%, 3%, 5% and 7% of protein isolate obtained from V. amygdalina leaves for 14 days. On the 15th day, the animals were humanely sacrificed and their liver homogenates were prepared. Standard biochemical procedures were adopted for determination of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glucose levels. Data were subjected to one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with Tukey-Kramer multiple comparison post-hoc test using Graph Pad, version 6 software. Results showed that CAT activity in alloxan-induced untreated rats (1.17 μmole H2O2) was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than observed in control rats (2.10 mole H2O2). Treatment with the respective doses recorded comparable values to those observed in control rats. Similar observation was seen with SOD data. Rats treated with 7% protein isolate recorded the most significant (p < 0.05) decrease in serum glucose level. The study suggests that the protein isolate possesses anti-diabetic and hypoglycaemic effects on alloxan-induced diabetic rats.

The current study sought to investigate the capacities of single and combinatorial herbal formulations of
leaf extracts of Acanthus montanus, Asystasia gangetica, Emilia coccinea, and Hibiscus rosasinensis to
reverse hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in alloxan-induced diabetic male rats. Phytochemical composition
of the herbal extracts, fasting plasma glucose concentration (FPGC), and serum lipid profile (SLP) of
the rats were measured by standard methods. The relative abundance of phytochemicals in the four
experimental leaf extracts was in the following order: flavonoids > alkaloids > saponins > tannins.
Hyperglycemic rats (HyGR) treated with single and combinatorial herbal formulations showed evidence
of reduced FPGC compared with the untreated HyGR and were normoglycemic (FPGC < 110.0 mg/dL).
Similarly, HyGR treated with single and combinatorial herbal formulations showed evidence of readjustments
in their SLPs. Generally, HyGR treated with triple herbal formulations (THfs) exhibited the
highest atherogenic index compared with HyGR treated with single herbal formulations (SHfs), double
herbal formulations (DHfs), and quadruple herbal formulation (QHf). The display of synergy or antagonism
by the composite herbal extracts in ameliorating hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia depended on the
type and number of individual herbal extract used in constituting the experimental herbal formulations.
Furthermore, the capacities of the herbal formulations (SHfs, DHfs, THfs, and QHf) to exert glycemic
control and reverse dyslipidemia did not follow predictable patterns in the animal models.

Objectives This study is aimed at investigating the effect of crude oil pollution on the phytochemical content and anti diabetic potentials of Oxytenanthera abyssinica rhizomes in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats using standard methods. Method The ability of the extracts to reduce blood glucose level in normal rats was done using 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of non crude oil polluted Oxytenanthera abyssinica extract NCOPOAE and 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of crude oil polluted Oxytenanthera abyssinica extract COPOAE respectively. Alloxan monohydrate at 130 mg kg b.w was used to induce diabetes to rats and was treated with 100, 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of NCOPOAE and 100, 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of COPOAE respectively while phytochemical analysis was done following standard method. Results Oral glucose tolerance test revealed significant decrease in plasma glucose concentration p 0.05 in groups of rats fed 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of NCOPOAE at intervals of 30, 60 and 120 minutes while that of COPOAE, none significantly decreased the plasma glucose concentration, when compared with those of control groups. The extracts did not have any significant effect in alloxan induced diabetic model. Conclusion These results could indicate that crude oil pollution could affect the synthesis of phytochemicals in plants therefore affecting the ethnomedicinal potencies. It also shows that O. abyssinca rhizomes could be more potent in management of type 2 diabetes where the cells are resistant to insulin. The current study sought to investigate the capacities of single and combinatorial herbal formulations of
leaf extracts of Acanthus montanus, Asystasia gangetica, Emilia coccinea, and Hibiscus rosasinensis to
reverse hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in alloxan-induced diabetic male rats. Phytochemical composition
of the herbal extracts, fasting plasma glucose concentration (FPGC), and serum lipid profile (SLP) of
the rats were measured by standard methods. The relative abundance of phytochemicals in the four
experimental leaf extracts was in the following order: flavonoids > alkaloids > saponins > tannins.
Hyperglycemic rats (HyGR) treated with single and combinatorial herbal formulations showed evidence
of reduced FPGC compared with the untreated HyGR and were normoglycemic (FPGC < 110.0 mg/dL).
Similarly, HyGR treated with single and combinatorial herbal formulations showed evidence of readjustments
in their SLPs. Generally, HyGR treated with triple herbal formulations (THfs) exhibited the
highest atherogenic index compared with HyGR treated with single herbal formulations (SHfs), double
herbal formulations (DHfs), and quadruple herbal formulation (QHf). The display of synergy or antagonism
by the composite herbal extracts in ameliorating hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia depended on the
type and number of individual herbal extract used in constituting the experimental herbal formulations.
Furthermore, the capacities of the herbal formulations (SHfs, DHfs, THfs, and QHf) to exert glycemic
control and reverse dyslipidemia did not follow predictable patterns in the animal models.

Objectives This study is aimed at investigating the effect of crude oil pollution on the phytochemical content and anti diabetic potentials of Oxytenanthera abyssinica rhizomes in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats using standard methods. Method The ability of the extracts to reduce blood glucose level in normal rats was done using 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of non crude oil polluted Oxytenanthera abyssinica extract NCOPOAE and 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of crude oil polluted Oxytenanthera abyssinica extract COPOAE respectively. Alloxan monohydrate at 130 mg kg b.w was used to induce diabetes to rats and was treated with 100, 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of NCOPOAE and 100, 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of COPOAE respectively while phytochemical analysis was done following standard method. Results Oral glucose tolerance test revealed significant decrease in plasma glucose concentration p 0.05 in groups of rats fed 200 and 400 mg kg b.w of NCOPOAE at intervals of 30, 60 and 120 minutes while that of COPOAE, none significantly decreased the plasma glucose concentration, when compared with those of control groups. The extracts did not have any significant effect in alloxan induced diabetic model. Conclusion These results could indicate that crude oil pollution could affect the synthesis of phytochemicals in plants therefore affecting the ethnomedicinal potencies. It also shows that O. abyssinca rhizomes could be more potent in management of type 2 diabetes where the cells are resistant to insulin. The ethanol extract of Spirulina platensis was investigated for antihyperglycemic effects in Long Evans rats. Three tests were carried out to assess these activities. The extract caused a dose dependent inhibition of glucose absorption and showed hypoglycemic effects at rats weighing from 110 – 150 gram. The anti-diabetic effects were estimated by measuring the amount of glucose in the samples collected after the experiment. The extract at a dose level of 250mg/kg showed significant result (p<0.05) at 15 minutes and the dose level of 500mg/kg showed significant efficacy (p<0.05) at 10 and 15 minutes and the glucose absorption rates were 38.94±0.21, 34.99±1.91 and 40.86±0.07 respectively. The present study explored the extra pancreatic action of the plant in Long Evans rats. This study suggests that ethanol extract of Spirulina platensis has anti-diabetic effects in a dose dependant manner and these may be effective in the treatment of diabetes.
ANTIDIABETIC POTENTIAL OF MEMECYLON TERMINALE DALZ EXTRACTS IN ALLOXAN INDUCE...Jing Zang
Memecylon terminale Dalz is an endemic plant that is exclusively present in the Western Ghat region of Southern India. The traditional healers in this region have been using this plant extract to cure disorders such as dysentery, diabetes, diarrhea, piles, haemoptysis, menorrhagia and shown to possess carminative stomachic astringent property. The present study was carried out to evaluate the hypoglycemic activity of different extracts of M. terminale Dalz in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Chloroform and methanolic extracts of M. terminale Dalz leaves were screened for hypoglycemic activity in alloxan induced diabetes in Swiss albino rats. The lipid profile was also examined in diabetic rats administered with these extracts. The efficacy of these extracts was also analyzed for their ability to inhibit α-glucosidase and α-amylase. Of the two extracts, chloroform extract (500 mg/kg body weight) showed dose dependent decrease in blood glucose level which was comparable to that of control after 24 h of extract administration. On the other hand, chloroform extract also showed good lipid profile that was comparable with standard drug. As compared to chloroform extract, the methanolic extract showed good inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme activity. The results of our study indicate that M. terminale Dalz plant possesses significant protective effects against alloxan induced diabetes. However, detailed structure function analysis of active ingredients of the extract is needed to be validated.

Poor control of diabetes mellitus can result to impairment in lipid profile culminating to dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease and stroke. Measurement of triglyceride (TAG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are recommended in cardiovascular screening. Herbal and natural products have been used in folk medicine for centuries throughout the world. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of ethanol leaf extract of Chromolaena odorata on lipid profile of streptozotocin-induced diabetic wistar albino rats. All the chemicals and reagents used in this research were of analytical grade. A total of 48 rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=8): diabetic rats in group 1 were not treated, rather received only 0.5ml normal saline; 0.5mg glibenclamide was given to diabetic rats in group 2; non-diabetic rats in group 3 received 0.5ml normal saline only, diabetic rats that were treated with 250 mg/kg, 350mg/kg and 450mg/kg b.w of ethanol leaf extract of Chromolaena odorata, were labeled groups 4, 5 and 6, respectively. At the end of the 21 days study period, the rats were fasted overnight and blood samples were collected via cardiac puncture. Lipid profile was assayed using standard biochemical methods. Injection of streptozotocin led to a significant (p<0.05) decline in HDL-C while the levels of TAG, TC, and LDL-C increased significantly. Remarkably, treatment with 250 mg/kg, 350mg/kg and 450mg/kg b.w of ethanol leaf extract of Chromolaena odorata led to reversal of the altered lipid profile. However, there were no significant differences (p>0.05) when the Chromolaena odorata extract-treated groups were compared to group 2 rats (treated with glibenclamide), a known standard antidiabetic drug. In conclusion, results from this research indicated that the ethanol leaf extract of Chromolaena odorata possess hypo-cholesterolaemic and hypo-triacylglycerolaemic effects as the extract decreased the LDL-cholesterol and increased the HDL-cholesterol levels.

Hypoglycemic effects were investigated in the ethanol extract of leaves of Rhizophora mucornata on Long Evans rats. Gut perfusion and six segments studies were carried out to assess these activities. In the gut-perfusion study the percentage of glucose absorption in control rats vs. rats fed with 250 mg/kg extracts were observed at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes and the significant (p<0.05) absorption result was found at 15 minutes, which was 35.87 vs. 57.29. The percentage of absorption was found better with 250 mg/kg than 500 mg/kg dose level. The six-segment study was performed to assess the amount of sucrose remaining in the GIT at six different positions. The amount sucrose unabsorbed in different GIT segments showed that in control rats vs. rats fed with 500mg/kg extract at 30 minutes in mmol/l was 0.120 vs. 0.135 which were gradually abating with time dependent manner at 60, 180, and 360 minutes in mmol/l. These results suggest that ethanol extract of leaves of Rhizophora mucornata has significant dose dependant anti-diabetic effects which may be effective in the treatment of diabetes.

Aqueous extract of Phaseolus Vulgaris L. (Red Kidney Beans) was investigated for its effects in
alloxan induced-diabetic rats. Twenty four albino rats were randomly allocated into four groups (A-D) of six
rats each such that group A (diabetes control) received 0.5 mL distilled water, group B (diabetes) received
400 mg/kg bwt of extract, group C (normal control) received 0.5 mL of distilled water while group D (normal)
received 400 mg/kg bwt of extract, all extract were orally administered once daily for 14 days. Diabetes was
induced in groups A&B by single interperitonial injection of 150 mg/kg alloxan monohydrate. Phytochemical
screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, balsam, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, cyanogenic glycosides,
terpenes and steroids. The hypoglyceamic potential of Phasoelus vulgaris L. was expressed in diabetes
treated rats. Blood glucose, total protein, albumin and cholesterol levels of the diabetes treated rats and
normal treated rats were not significantly (p>0.05) altered when compared with the control rats. However,
these values were significantly (p<0.05)><0.05)>0.05) effects on PCV and Hb in all groups when compared to the normal control. The study showed that
the aqueous extract of Phasoelus vulgaris L. leaves possess hypoglycaemic, antidiabetic properties and
ameliorating the high levels of marker enzymes observed in diabetes untreated rats.

alcoholic (AlE) and aqueous extract (AqE) from Commelina benghalensis root (CB) on EtOH-induced hepatic
injury in Wistar rat. Hepatotoxic parameters studied in vivo include serum transaminases (AST, and ALT),
ALP, bilirubin, protein, lipid profile (Cholesterol, triglyceride, VLDL and HDL) and level of antioxidants
together with histopathological examination. Liv 52® was used as a reference hepatoprotective agent

Collection and Identification of Plant: The fresh
leaves of the plant Abroma augusta (Ulatkambal) and
seeds of Syzygium cumini (Jam), were collected
during the month of February 2009 from the area of
Homna Thana, Comilla, Bangladesh. The fresh
leaves of those plants were taxonomically identified
from The National Herbarium of Bangladesh.
Identification number is Abroma augusta (34350) and
Syzygium cumini (34351).
Extraction of Plant Material: About 100 gm powder
material of each plant (leaves of Abroma augusta and
seeds of Syzygium cumini) was taken in each
separate glass jar and soaked in methanol. The
container with its content was sealed by cotton plug
and aluminium foil and keep for a period of 7 days
accompanying occasional shaking and stirring. The
extracts were then filtered through filter paper
(Double Rings filter paper 102, 11.0 cm). The filtrates
were concentrated at 50ºC under reduce pressure
using vacuum pump rotary evaporator (STUART
RF3022C, UK) to afford a greenish mass of leaves
and seeds extracts.
Experimental animal: Experiment was conducted on
adult albino rats of either sex with the weights of 110165 gm procured from International Centre for
Diarrhoeal Disease Research Bangladesh (ICDDRB).
All rats were fed normal laboratory chow food
containing 16% protein, 66% carbohydrate, 8% fats
and water. All rats were housed at a (12:12) hr light
and dark cycle at 25c and relative humidity (6070)%.
Ethical Approval: The guidelines followed for animal
experiment were approved by the institutional animal
ethical committee (Zimmermann M, 1983).
Experimental Design: Animals were divided into six
groups and for each group six animals were taken.
Group I (Normal control) rats served as positive
control received physiological saline (0.9% NaCl;
5ml/kg.b.w.p.o).
Group II (Diabetic Control) Diabetes was induced by
intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan.
Group III rats were administered Metformin
Hydrochloride (100 mg/kg/day) and Group IV rats
were treated with Glibenclamide (0.05 mg/kg/day) at
an interval of 24 hr for seven consecutive days and
served as standard.
Group V rats were received intraperitoneal injection
of Abroma augusta (300mg/kg/day) while group VI
rats were received Syzygium cumini (300mg/kg/day)
at an interval of 24 hr for seven consecutive days.
Blood glucose was measured on 1st, 3rd and 7th
day. At the 8th day all the animals were sacrificed
and
evaluated
for
the
biochemical
and
histopathological studies.
Preparation of Alloxan solution: At first body
weight of rats were measured. Then required amount
of Alloxan was measured according to the body
weight by following the dose of 110 mg of Alloxan per
1000 gm of body weight. Then calculated amount of
Alloxan was dissolved in 0.1 ml of sterile normal
saline water.
Induction of alloxan: The rats were injected Alloxan
monohydrate, dissolved in sterile normal saline water
at a dose of 110mg/kg body weights intraperitoneally
once a day. Alloxan is capable of producing fatal
hypoglycemia as a result of massive pancreatic
insulin release; therefore the rats were treated with
glucose solution orally. After few days rats with
moderate
diabetes
having
glycosuria
and
hyperglycemia that is blood glucose level exceed
normal level.
Preparation of dosage of active drug and plant
extract: Metformin hydrochloride (a biguanide):
Metformin hydrochloride was in microcrystalline form
and freely soluble in water. The dosage was
prepared in solution form using sterilized water in
such a concentration that each 0.1ml contained
metformin hydrochloride according to the dose of 100
mg/kg/day, since metformin is effective in such dose
in case of humans.
Glibenclamide (a sulfonylurea):Glibenclamide was in
powder form and soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide
(DMSO) and dosage was prepared in solution form
using 90% DMSO in such a concentration that each
0.1 ml contained glibenclamide according to the dose
0.05 mg/kg/day, singe glibenclamide is effective in
such concentration in case of humans.
Abroma augusta or Ulatkamble: The crude extract
obtained from leaves was dissolved in 99% DMSO to
prepare the solution where each 0.1 ml contained
Abroma augusta according to the dose of 300
mg/kg/day.
Syzygium cumini or Jam: The dried extract obtained
from leaves was dissolved in DMSO to prepare the
solution where each 0.1 ml contained Syzygium
cumini according to the dose of 300 mg/kg/day.
0.1 ml of each solution was administered everyday
during treatment to achieve required dose
of
respective agents.

Biochemical Assay: Fasting blood glucose level
was evaluated in normal and diabetic rats from the
tail vein by strip method (Bioland Glucometer,
Germany). At first it is done just before extract
administration of first day then it is continued for 7
days just one hour after the administration of plant
extract.
Measurement of weight variations: The variations
in weight were measured for both diabetic and
normal rats.
Histopathological Studies: After sacrificing the rat’s
heart, liver and lungs, tissues were collected and
histological examination was carried out by
Raghuramulu method. Tissue fixation was carried out
immediately after removal from the body with 10%
neutral buffered formaldehyde solution (pH 7.0). All
tissues were cleaned and embedded by using xylene
and paraffin (melting point 58-60˚C). Tissues were
stained by double staining. To differentiate the
nucleus and cytoplasm, the basic dye haematoxylin
and the acid dye eosin were used (Kehar et al.,
1967). Electron micrographs were performed using
transmission electron microscope and photographed
by photomicrography.
RESULT
Effect on blood glucose and body weight: Alloxan
(110 mg/kg body weight) administration resulted in
significant elevation of glucose level and reduction in
body weight. Administration of Abroma augusta and
Syzygium cumini at a dose of 300mg/kg body weight
administered for seven days were able to correct this
aberration significantly (p<0.001). The results of all
the formulations tested are presented in Table 1.
Before treatment schedule, fasting blood glucose
level in all animals was within normal range. After
treatment with Alloxan, the fasting blood glucose
level was significantly changed and it was
significantly (P<0.001) reduced by 7 days treatment
with methanolic extract of Syzygium cumini and
Abroma augusta that is comparable to the standard
Glibenclamide and Metformin HCl. On the
progression of treatment with methanolic extract of
Syzygium cumini (300 mg/kg/day) and Abroma
augusta (300mg/kg/day) fasting blood glucose level
reduced at 9.28 ± 0.46 mmol/L and 9.90 ± 0.37
rd
mmol/L respectively on 3 day (Table 1.). At the end
th
of experiment (7 day) fasting blood glucose (FBG)
level was 7.55 ± 0.20 and 7.95 ± 0.11 mmol/L in the
doses of Syzygium cumini (300 mg/kg/day), and
Abroma augusta (300mg/kg/day) respectively.
The findings of our study agrees to reports of study
(Giovanni et al., 2006) that showed treatment with
extracts of Abroma augusta and Syzygium cumini
improved the weight compared to untreated diabetic
rat significantly ( p<0.001) ( Table 2).
Statistical Analysis: Data are expressed as mean ±
SEM and were analyzed by the analysis of variance
(ANOVA)followed by Post hoc Dunnet’s multiple
comparisons test, using SPSS 16.00 (USA). For all
the tests, results with P values < 0.05, 0.001were
taken to imply statistical significance.

compared to diabetic control (Gr-II).
Histopathological Findings: In the diabetic group,
the cytoplasm of peri-acinar hepatocytes showed
either a single large or multiple small round empty
vacuoles that distended the cell cytoplasm and
displaced the nucleus to the periphery in histological
sections of liver stained with haematoxylin and eosin.

These degenerative changes were also seen, to a
lesser
extent,
in
the
midzonal
regions.
Parenchymatous degeneration was observed in the
peripheral regions. Dissociation of hepatocytes and
sinusoidal dilatation occurred due to these changes.
These histopathological changes were restored by
treatment with the extract (Fig 1)

and Africa ( Shapiro et al., 2002). Alloxan, a beta
cytotoxin, induces diabetes in a wide variety of
animal species by damaging the insulin secreting
pancreatic beta cell resulting in a decrease in
endogenous insulin release, which paves the ways
for the decreased utilization of glucose by the tissues
(Omamoto, H. et al., 1981) Insulin deficiency leads to
various metabolic aberrations the animals namely
increase blood glucose (Chude, M.A. et al., 2001),
decreased protein content (Ghosh, S. et al., 2001).
The present study was conducted to evaluate and to
compare the antidiabetic activity of some marketed
formulations with the plant extract. The experimental
groups were treated with standard (Glibenclamide +
Metformin) and test formulations. The experiment
was conducted in accordance with parallel design i.e.
each group received single formulation, single time.
After completion of the study protocol, it was found
that with test and standard treatment, the serum level
of glucose reduced significantly (p<0.001) as
compared to diabetic control. The significant
antidiabetic activity of formulations may be due to
inhibition of free radical generation and subsequent
tissue damage induced by alloxan or potentiation of
plasma insulin effect by increase either pancreatic
secretion of insulin from existing beta cells or its
release from bound form as indicated by significant
improvement in glucose level because insulin inhibit
gluconeogenesis from protein. In comparative
evaluation of Abroma augusta and Syzygium cumini,
later was found to be more efficacious as compared
to first one.
The antidiabetic activity of the plant extract was also
confirmed by the increase in weight of the alloxan
induced diabetic rat.
Histopathological studies of liver in diabetic and
extract treated groups substantiate the cytoprotective
action of the extract.
