Crews used a trenchless digging machine called a U Mole to excavate a trial pit at the Moor Cut channel bed to locate twin foul sewer pipes buried below. Safety barriers and equipment were set up before the U Mole arrived to extend suction pipework into the ground as it sucked up soil and groundwater. The digging revealed two 300mm diameter foul sewer pipes buried at the depth indicated by the survey, with the water and reusable soil separated from the excavated material. The £7.9k plus VAT project was carried out by McNicholas and next steps include reviewing survey results to determine if the trenchless technique will be accepted for further work.
