Leading and Ameliorating Skincare Happiness
With contemporary developments, the world is
redefining the notion of “what it means to care
for oneself that includes skin health” Environ®
Skin Care addresses skin health in an exceptional state of
the art, ever evolving manner.
Dr. Des Fernandes and Val Carstens, a brother and sister,
created an extraordinary company and brand – Environ®
Skin Care. For over the past three decades they have
become industry leaders and icons garnering over 100
industry awards for leadership, innovation, manufacturing
and ground breaking formulations.
Carol and I have been blessed to help be the custodians and
distributors of their creation for the United States and the
Caribbean.
Let’s drive through Rob’s inspiring story!
The Journey – From Academics to CEO
The company’s success in the United States is partly
because of its leader and its vision in keeping with Des and
Val’s creation. Rob Trow’s journey with DermaConcepts®
is quite interesting. One would be surprised to know that he
started his professional career as an academic, serving as a
professor, Dean, and Executive Vice President of multiple
well-known universities.

Story
Rob Trow
CEO
DermaConcepts®
Then, while servicing as a respected academic, he
developed a reputation as a renowned consultant to family
businesses helping them through generational
transformations. This work led him to be hired by one of his
consulting clients to serve as a top executive of a company
helping to lead in a transition from a regional to an
international business with over 10,000 employees.
Eventually, after thinking he was going to retire, he was
recruited by his wife, Carol Trow, to help her grow her
skincare and cosmeceutical sales, marketing, and
distribution company. But the best part for her, as Rob
reminisces about the beginning, he shares, “she didn’t have
to pay me.
From its inception, its CEO has helped DermaConcepts®
USA to double every four years for the past 25 years. Rob
Trow proudly shares, “We currently directly employ over 50
talented territory managers, leading industry educators,
and customer service teammates working with 2,500
clients. Our teammates certainly add the most value to our
company. They outshine us every day.”
Caring For The Skin – The Why and The How?
With advancing times, people are becoming cognizant
about loving themselves. The most popular view of this
broad term is understood as pampering the skin and keeping
it healthy at all times. This is conveyed by the CEO of
DermaConcepts® as he considers skin health and wellness
as an essential aspect of overall well-being and self-care
that affects physical, emotional, and mental health.
To contribute actively to this, the company’s leader stresses
the importance of education and training, which are the key
to treating the skin effectively.
He says, “Our education has been recognized by
physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and estheticians as
one of the best in the country. Regularly scheduled training
seminars, from one to three-day programs, are held
throughout the United States to introduce Environ®
products and technology to skin care professionals and to
provide intensive product knowledge.”
This is aided by continuing education workshops that are
provided regularly to update and refresh their clients on
Environ’s newest products, protocols, procedures, and
industry developments. In addition, seminars on skin
science, retailing, skin consultation, professional treatment
protocols, merchandising, marketing, and best practices for
operating a successful esthetic clinic, are provided by their
team.
The DermaConcepts® team, aided by Environ South
Africa, makes sure that these benefits are appropriate for all
races, every skin type and are not restricted by gender or
age.
Skin Care for A Lifetime
Environ® Skin Care provides serious, sustainable results
over time. The products have impacted positively on every
generation. Like Rob puts it, “It is not hope in a jar.”
The company is considerate about everyone’s needs, and it
ensures that everything is backed by scientific evidence and
is suitable throughout generations of a household.
Elaborating on how this is practiced, Rob says, “To get the
best results, a skin consultation is needed as one product, or
one strength is not suitable for all. It is a step-up system
designed to address individual skin concerns to ensure
healthy looking skin for a lifetime.”
Aesthetically Sustainable Products
Consumers are calibrating their needs to the environmental
needs and therefore, it gets important for skincare
companies to produce products that are sustainable as well
as safe. At DermaConcepts®, Rob says, “Environ®
SIMPLY PUT, WE LISTEN
BEFORE WE SPEAK. ASK
BEFORE WE RECOMMEND.
WE STRONGLY BELIEVE
THE WHOLE IS FAR
GREATER THAN THE SUM
OF ITS PARTS.

maintains its own pharmaceutical grade factory using only
ethically sourced and tested ingredients.”
Along with production, it is also important to make it
aesthetically sound in terms of product packaging to ensure
consumer satisfaction, efficacy and also the safety of the
product. The company has invested in its packaging that is
designed to protect and ensure the effectiveness and results
of the ingredients.
Promoting Inclusive Skincare
It is a common understanding that skin care is limited by
gender and age. But DermaConcepts® is changing this
notion as all its products are designed to maximize skin
health. The breadth of offerings ensures that young, old,
men, women, and skin of color can achieve optimum
results. Citing an example, Rob says, “Our formulations
are widely used in hospitals, burn centers, pediatric
facilities, medical offices, and literally thousands of
medical spas and wellness centers.”
Additionally, Environ® Skin Care contains a vitamin A
step-up system, and the product line is based on varying
intensities and levels of ingredients (vitamins, peptides,
growth factors, AHA’s) to ensure safe at-home and clinical
treatments to meet all individual skin types, concerns, and
lifestyles.
A Mindful Skincare Routine
DermaConcepts® annually offers over 4,000 in-person
training and educational events plus a myriad of virtual
programs on skin science, ingredients, products, and the
latest technology available to ensure and enhance skin
health. In addition, Rob and Carol have published over 140
articles and recently a book, for skin care professionals, on
skin science and running a skincare practice – all
unbranded.
Rob shares, “Carol, I, and our team work tirelessly to
debunk myths in the skin care industry and set straight
some of the misconceptions about ingredients.”
Bringing clarity to the statements, he further adds, “For
example, while antioxidants are known to be protective
against the effects of free radicals, they offer other benefits.
That is, they are preventive and rejuvenating. Certain
vitamins, most prominently Vitamin A, offers us both the
preventive benefits of an effective antioxidant, while also
providing the beneficial look of repair and rejuvenation.”

INGREDIENTS.
To promote an efficient skincare routine, Environ® Skin
Care and its leaders are focusing on scientific research to
explore key ingredients to bring uniqueness and
trustworthiness to the product provision.
Taking the example of vitamin A and vitamin C, Rob says,
“Vitamin A has long been known as the “skin vitamin” but
only recently has attention been focused on it as a “skin
normalizer” and an indispensable factor in the
maintenance of youthful-appearing and healthy-looking
skin. Scientific research shows it helps to prevent and
reverse the effects of photo-aging, and to improve the look
of hydration. Environ® Skin Care has also pioneered the
use of stabilized and highly effective forms of Vitamin C as
ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate (VC-IP). Scientific studies show
this is a fat-soluble and extremely stable form of vitamin C,
making it more effective. Besides its basic action as a free
radical scavenger, vitamin C has an important part to play
in improving the appearance of firmer, less wrinkled skin. It
also improves the look of uneven skin tone. For the
healthiest-looking, most radiant skin, vitamin C is
essential.”
Maintaining empirical research as a guiding force for the
products, Rob proudly says, “DermaConcepts® is proud to
be the official United States distributor for Environ® Skin
Care as it offers all this together with powerful
antioxidants, inorganic UV-A & UV-B sun reflectants
(titanium dioxide), pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol), growth
factors, synergistic cocktails of peptides, the industry
leading Cool Peel system and the targeted use of alpha and
beta hydroxy acids.”
A Guiding Light
A leader acts as a luminescent person who not only helps
the company grow but also helps its members grow. This is
also true at DermaConcepts®, as its CEO shares, “Simply
put, we listen before we speak. Ask before we recommend.
We strongly believe the whole is far greater than the sum of
its parts.”
And hence, a very important value that they instill in their
colleagues is “family first.”
The CEO’s Life Lessons
Events affect every human being, making them learn more
and shape them as individuals. The CEO shares the most
important learnings that have helped him grow personally
and professionally. He says, “Learning that it is OKAY to
say I don’t know something and to ask and listen to others.
Our success is due to the world wide Environ® family.

Revolu onizing Skin Health with Vision and Passion
aring for your skin is not just about looking good;
Cit's about keeping yourself healthy too. Your skin
takes care of you, so it's essential to return the
favor by taking care of it. That's why having a well-planned
skincare routine is crucial – it's an investment in your
overall well-being.
The key to an effective skincare routine lies in using high-
quality products that are safe and actually work. Look for
formulations designed for your specific skin type and
concerns, especially if you have sensitive skin or other
issues. These products can work wonders in improving your
skin's texture and appearance while also protecting it from
the harmful effects of the sun and pollutants that can harm
your health.
For optimal results, selecting skincare essentials from a
reputable brand like Therapon Skin Health is wise. Their
products are meticulously crafted to complement each
other, ensuring top-notch performance, and you can rely on
their exceptional quality. This makes it much simpler to
anticipate how your skin will respond when trying out new
products from the same line.
Therapon Skin Health, led by the experienced Dr. James
Beckman, offers a wide range of products and procedures
tailored to various skin conditions such as acne, aging skin,
redness, and pigmentation issues. They also have a
professional line available exclusively to qualified skin
health professionals.
In a recent interview, Dr. Beckman shared insights about
the beginnings of Therapon Skin Health, highlighting the
company's commitment to providing quality skin care
solutions and his vision for its future.
Please brief our audience about Therapon Skin Health.
Kindly tell us the source of inspiration for starting a
Medical Aesthetics company.
I began my medical career in 1977 after graduating from
Arkansas' Medical School and completing a plastic surgery
residency. I treated patients in my plastic surgery practice in
Arkansas for over twenty years. At the time, I never
envisioned starting a skincare company.
However, I wanted to provide my patients with the best skin
care products and ingredients available to help their healing
process, so I set out to develop products not available at the
time that would improve their overall skin health and
appearance.
Having majored in chemistry and from treating severely
burned patients, I was inspired to create my full line of
product solutions for restoring full function and mobility to
skin-grafted hands. This led to the development of
Beckman's Skin Care Cream, which would later become the
foundation product for Therapon Skin Health.
The steps to restoring aging skin are to clean and gently
remove damaged skin elements or cells, repair the skin,
restore skin to its healthiest condition and protect skin from
damage. In 1996, the Theraderm Skin Renewal system was
developed, and we have continued to innovate and add
breakthrough products ever since.
Tell us more about your products and service offerings
and what aspects make them stand out in the industry.
What differentiates us is that all of our products are
formulated by me as a plastic surgeon and chemistry major
to restore function to damaged skin. I have personally seen
probably every kind of trauma and skin problem

imaginable. We formulate products focused on improving
skin problems.
We first look at what is the cause of the disease or problem;
then, we look at what ingredients can possibly rectify or
solve the problem. We uniquely combine different products
with other products rather than make one mega product that
claims to do everything.
This allows us to provide a very specific focus on getting
the best result from the combination. This would be similar
to preparing an excellent meal with 3-4 exceptional dishes
that complement each of the others.
Please tell us about your journey and how you have
helped with the development and enhancement of the
outreach of your company.
Therapon products in the Theraderm brand enhance the
quality of life through beautiful skin and a restored youthful
appearance. We do this by controlling the factors that
contribute to aging, such as damaged collagen structure,
irregular pigment, and loss of elasticity.
Prevention of daily, cumulative, permanent damage to the
skin from UV exposure combined with restoration of
damage already present is a key element in getting the
exceptional results consistently seen.
The life/work goal of a plastic surgeon has always been to
restore full function and appearance to patients after injury
or damage from disease or trauma. Time teaches that the
skin is not simply the "painted surface" of the body. Its full-
thickness qualities are perhaps the most functional part of
one's life and self-esteem.
Over years of treating severely burned patients, I realized
my passion for developing a superior cream to restore
mobility, suppleness, and softness to skin grafted hands –
hands that could bend and grasp objects necessary for
someone to have a better quality of life.
My college degree in chemistry and passion for knowing
the details of skin anatomy, physiology, and function, and
numerous hours of research in the library led me to
laboratory formulations and clinical testing. The goal was to
find the "ultimate skin restoration cream."
March 2023
18|www.insightscare.com
Several years later, five women who all had excellent
results in eliminating sagging skin from facelifts asked a
familiar question within the same week: "What can erase
fine lines, wrinkles, and make skin pigment even after a
facelift removes sagging?" In the quest for a product that
would correct these issues, I discovered a unique secret
ingredient that not only enhanced moisturizer penetration
but also had the side effect of erasing fine wrinkles and
restoring youthful colouration to ageing facial skin!
I can remember the spring day in 1988 when the clear
vision came. The vision was to create a simplified daily
skincare system of products that would restore and
rejuvenate ageing facial skin to a beautiful, younger look,
as well as make skin soft and pliable again. Each
component of the system would have a special role in the
system and yet be a fully "stand-alone" product.
The result was the Theraderm Skin Health System that
restores sun-damaged or aged skin and produces youthful,
natural beauty. Taking only minutes per day, women (or
men) of any age or ethnicity and skin type could now
incorporate products into their beauty routine specifically
focused on skin health. Other plastic surgeons heard about
the products, so I began to provide these incredible new
products to their patients. It was a natural progression to
start a company to make sure it could reach the masses.
In your opinion, what could be the future of the medical
aesthetics industry post-pandemic? And how are you
strategizing your company's operations for that future?
As proven years ago, during the great depression, when
both money and goods were scarce, women continued to
spend money on skincare products. Little expense could
make their skin appearance look pretty and youthful! Our
plan is to continue providing exceptional skincare products
that are proven to diminish aging appearance while
restoring both youthful texture and coloration to skin.
As an established leader, what would be your advice to
the budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts aspiring to
venture into the medical aesthetics industry?
My father instilled many business principles in me as I
grew up. He died suddenly in the summer after my first year
in medical school, leaving behind a business with 56
employees that I needed to manage for a year and a mother
and six sisters to care for, so I took a year off from med
school.
I luckily had good advisors as I ran the company and
quickly learned about all aspects of business, which helped
prepare me for running my future practice and business.
My advice would be to stop waiting. I encourage every
person of any age or station in life to wake up every
morning and think about who and what they could do to
effect change in their own lives and others' lives.
How do you envision scaling your company's services in
2023 and beyond?
My major in college was chemistry. This allows me to
originate essential aspects of our product formulations to
get properties that direct skin condition characteristics and
desired actions.
Each of our products is made using our own proprietary
formulations. We choose specific containers and contract
manufacturers for the custom production of our products to
our specifications. Our manufacturing partners can scale up
production to extremely large quantities if given a week or
two lead times.

Futuristic Growth of
Market

Market
Global Analysis
March 2023
20|www.insightscare.com
The cosmetic market has long been a pillar of the
beauty and personal care industry, catering to the
ever-evolving needs and desires of consumers
worldwide. As technology, consumer preferences, and
societal trends continue to shape the landscape, the future of
the cosmetic market appears exceptionally promising.
Through this article, we aim to provide a global analysis of
the projected growth and key factors driving the futuristic
expansion of the cosmetic industry.
Rising Demand for Natural and Sustainable Products
In recent years, there has been a significant shift in
consumer preferences towards natural and sustainable
beauty products. As awareness regarding the environmental
impact of cosmetics grows, consumers are seeking brands
that prioritize eco-friendly practices and ingredients sourced
ethically. This shift is expected to drive the demand for

organic and cruelty-free products, propelling the growth of
cosmetic companies that embrace sustainability and
environmental consciousness.
Advancements in Skincare Technology
The skincare segment of the cosmetic market has witnessed
remarkable technological advancements. Innovations such
as smart skincare devices, personalized skincare
formulations based on genetic profiling, and artificial
intelligence-driven product recommendations have
revolutionized the way consumers approach skincare. These
cutting-edge technologies offer precise and customized
solutions, leading to improved skincare results and
customer satisfaction.
Inclusivity and Diversity in Product Offerings
The global cosmetic market has become increasingly
diverse and inclusive, with brands recognizing the
importance of catering on a wide range of skin tones, hair
types, and cultural backgrounds. In response to the
increasing demand for representation and inclusivity,
companies are expanding their product lines to be more
inclusive, offering a diverse array of shades and
formulations that cater to various ethnicities and identities.
This inclusivity-focused approach is anticipated to fuel
market growth as more consumers seek brands that embrace
diversity.
Influencer and Social Media Marketing
The power of social media influencers and digital marketing
cannot be understated in the cosmetic industry. Influencers,
beauty bloggers, and vloggers wield significant influence
over consumer preferences and purchasing decisions.
Brands that successfully collaborate with influencers and
leverage social media platforms are expected to gain a
competitive edge in the market. As social media continues
to dominate the way consumers discover and engage with
beauty products, influencer and social media marketing are
set to play a crucial role in driving future growth.
Growing Male Grooming Segment
The male grooming segment of the cosmetic market has
experienced substantial growth in recent years. Men are
increasingly investing in personal care products, including
skincare, haircare, and grooming items. As societal norms
evolve, the stigma surrounding male grooming diminishes,
leading to greater acceptance and uptake of cosmetic
products among men. This expanding male grooming
market presents a significant growth opportunity for
cosmetic brands that tailor their offerings to the specific
needs and preferences of male consumers.
E-commerce and Digital Retail
The rise of e-commerce and digital retail platforms has
revolutionized the way consumers shop for cosmetics.
Online shopping offers convenience, a wider product
selection, and the ability to compare prices and to read
customer reviews easily. The COVID-19 pandemic further
accelerated the shift to the online purchasing, and this trend
is expected to continue post-pandemic. Cosmetic
companies that invest in robust e-commerce platforms and
user-friendly mobile apps are likely to experience
substantial growth and reach new markets.
Skincare-Driven Makeup Products
The cosmetic industry is witnessing a growing trend of
makeup products infused with skincare benefits. Consumers
are increasingly seeking makeup items that not only
enhance their appearance but also offer nourishing and
protective qualities for the skin. From foundations with SPF
protection to lipsticks enriched with moisturizing
ingredients, the fusion of skincare and makeup is set to
become a dominant force in the industry, catering to health-
conscious and beauty-savvy consumers.
Conclusion
The cosmetic market's future appears exceptionally bright,
driven by a multitude of factors that are reshaping the
industry. As consumers prioritize natural and sustainable
products, demand inclusivity, and embrace technological
advancements, cosmetic companies that adapt to these
changing preferences are likely to experience significant
growth. Additionally, the continued rise of influencer and
social media marketing, the expansion of the male
grooming segment, and the dominance of e-commerce are
all expected to contribute to the cosmetic market's
expansion on a global scale. By staying ahead of these
trends and catering to the diverse needs of consumers,
cosmetic brands can position themselves for a successful
and prosperous future in the ever-evolving beauty and
personal care industry.

BFR Training
Method: Backed by
Science
he growing demand for improvements and
Tinnovations in training practices is changing the
landscape of exercise at both professional and
amateur levels. In the realm of science, researchers have
studied the effectiveness of different methods that could
offer a wide array of benefits ranging from the sports
performance enhancement to rehabilitation. One such
method that has gained interest over the past decade is
blood flow restriction (BFR) training.
What is known today as the BFR training method stems
from the pivotal works of its inventor Dr. Yoshiaki Sato.
Just about fifty years ago, he coined the name “KAATSU,”
which could be roughly translated from Japanese as “added
pressure.” Wouldn’t just anyone be curious to know more
about a proven training method which may help develop
strength, increase muscle size, and activate various
metabolic processes without lifting heavy weight, but by
tricking the body into thinking that it is working harder than
it actually is? Yet, it was not until recently that researchers,
practitioners, and other professionals were made to take a
closer look at this unique technique as a result of its vast
potential.
What Is BFR Training?
BFR integrates low-intensity (~20%–40% of 1-RM)
resistance training along with partial blood flow restriction
to the working muscles using inflatable air cuffs fixed in the
proximal region of the limbs exercised. Most applications
include the complete occlusion of venous flow, while the
recommended pressure used to block the arterial flow
ranges from 40 to 80%, and only in passive BFR, the cuff
pressure is set between 80 to 100% for a short period.
Although BFR is based on very low intensities, it has been
shown to stimulate increases in muscle size and strength
that are comparable to those seen following conventional
high-intensity resistance training.
BFR Devices in a Nutshell
Many different devices are commonly used to facilitate
BFR training, including elastic wraps or straps, inflatable
pneumatic cuffs, and tourniquets. Since it is difficult to
determine the amount of applied pressure, caution is
advised when using some of them. Apropos of this, BFR
devices could be generally divided into two groups. The
first one refers to practical blood flow restriction (pBFR)
training which was created in 2009. As an alternative to the
traditional BFR, this type of training practice suggests the
use of rigid elastic bands or knee wraps designed for
occlusion training which are also affordable and practical.
The second group involves inflatable pneumatic cuffs and
tourniquets where the needed occlusion is created by
inflating the air through an automatic device or handheld
pump. This group can be further divided into two subgroups
according to devices that automatically calculate the LOP
(limb occlusion pressure) and the ones that require a
Doppler ultrasound. The percentage of occlusion is
calculated based on LOP, which is the minimum pressure
needed to completely occlude the arterial blood flow.
Dimensions of the applied device, the site of restriction, and
individual physiology, such as limb circumference and
diastolic blood pressure, all have an impact on the process
of arterial blood restriction.
Breaking Down the Benefits of BFR
A growing body of evidence has shown that BFR can be
used in physical therapy to aid in the recovery of elderly
patients after knee arthroscopy or even more complex knee
surgeries. Recent studies have also demonstrated that, when
compared with low-load training, low-load BFR training is
more effective, tolerable, and, therefore, a potential clinical
rehabilitation tool. The current literature suggests that a
significant increase in strength and sports performance is
associated with the use of BFR training.

Some of the findings have revealed that the muscular
adaptations to BFR training are highly beneficial for elderly
individuals, post-operative rehabilitation patients with
compromised strength and/or joint stability, or professional
athletes. When applied and performed appropriately, BFR
can be used in everyday training as well as in rehabilitation
settings. All this implies that BFR is intended for just about
anyone, from professional athletes to older adults. However,
continued research is more than vital if further advances are
to be made.
The First BFR Certification in the UAE
Since its increasing popularity is undeniable, it is important
to emphasize that if not performed under the supervision of
a trained professional, BFR can cause severe health issues.
Health, Exercise, and Research Center (HERC) is a Dubai-
based company that recognized the importance of creating a
course that can build one’s competence to lead people to
change successfully. Among many other accredited courses
within HERC’s Education department, this is the world’s
first one that divides BFR usage according to its practical
applicability to BFR Training and BFR Therapy. BFR
Training Certification is aimed at personal trainers, sports
coaches, and strength and conditioning coaches working
with a healthy population in the gym environment. BFR
Therapy Certification is aimed at physiotherapists, sports
medicine specialists, and other healthcare providers who
can benefit from BFR use in a clinical setting working with
patients with low to moderate health impairment. Therefore,
the course is organized in a way that enables individuals
from different fields to further their careers and support
those in need. All participants have the chance to practice
with different BFR devices, from pBFR straps to inflatable
cuffs. HERC’s Research Department is currently involved
in a BFR research project collaborating with international
researchers. The idea is to investigate the LOE (levels of
evidence) within PRISMA’s guidelines for Systematic
Reviews. The main objective is officially to register BFR as
a method that can be used by physiotherapists and sports
practitioners in the UAE.

Emerging
The aesthetic industry has witnessed remarkable
advancements and innovations over the past
decade, transforming how we perceive beauty,
skincare, and overall appearance. From non-invasive
treatments to cutting-edge technologies, the field of
aesthetics has made tremendous strides in providing safe,
effective, and customized solutions for individuals seeking
to enhance their physical appearance.
In this article, we will explore some of the most significant
emerging innovations in the aesthetic industry, offering a
glimpse into the exciting future of beauty and self-care.
AI-Driven Personalization
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has penetrated various
industries, and the aesthetic field is no exception. AI
algorithms are now employed to create personalized
treatment plans and skincare regimens tailored to each
individual's unique needs and goals. By analyzing vast
amounts of data, AI can predict how certain treatments and

Virtual Consultations and Augmented Reality
One of the challenges faced by the aesthetic industry has
been the difficulty of visualizing the potential results of a
treatment before undergoing it. However, virtual
consultations and augmented reality (AR) have
revolutionized aesthetic care. Through sophisticated
software, patients can now see simulated outcomes of
various treatments on their own bodies, enabling them to
make more informed decisions about the procedures they
wish to pursue. This technology not only enhances the
patient experience but also fosters better communication
between clients and practitioners, leading to more realistic
expectations and increased treatment success rates.
Microneedling and Radiofrequency Combination
Microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) treatments have
gained popularity in recent years for their ability to
rejuvenate the skin and improve its texture. Now,
innovators in the aesthetic industry are combining these two
techniques to create even more potent and transformative
results. The combination of microneedling and RF energy
stimulates collagen production more effectively, targeting a
wider range of skin concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles,
and acne scars. This emerging innovation has shown
promising results, making it a sought-after option for those
seeking non-surgical skin tightening and rejuvenation.
Energy-Based Fat Reduction
While traditional liposuction remains a popular option for
fat removal, advancements in energy-based fat reduction
treatments offer a less invasive alternative. Techniques like
laser lipolysis and cryolipolysis harness the power of
energy to target and eliminate unwanted fat cells without
surgery. These procedures have minimal downtime, making
them appealing to individuals with busy lifestyles. Using
energy-based technology, the ability to contour the body
and reduce localized fat pockets showcases the potential for
further breakthroughs in non-invasive body sculpting.
Stem Cells in Aesthetic Treatments
Stem cell research has opened up exciting possibilities in
various medical fields, and aesthetics is no exception. Stem
cells can uniquely differentiate into various cell types,
promoting tissue repair and regeneration. In the aesthetic
industry, stem cells are being utilized to enhance the results
of treatments like facelifts and hair restoration. When
combined with traditional procedures, stem cell therapies
can accelerate healing, increase collagen production, and
improve skin and hair quality, leading to more natural and
long-lasting outcomes.
Nanotechnology in Skincare
Nanotechnology has revolutionized the skincare industry,
allowing for the development of innovative products with
enhanced efficacy. Nano-sized particles can penetrate the
skin more effectively, delivering active ingredients to
deeper layers and targeting specific skin concerns.
Nanotechnology-based skincare products are becoming
increasingly popular for their ability to address issues such
as hyperpigmentation, acne, and aging with greater
precision and effectiveness. As research advances, we
expect a wider range of nanotechnology-based skincare
solutions to emerge.
Thread Lifts for Non-Surgical Facelifts
The desire for youthful and lifted skin without undergoing
invasive surgery has led to the emergence of thread lifts.
Thread lifts involve the insertion of dissolvable sutures
under the skin, which are then lifted to provide a more
youthful appearance. These sutures stimulate collagen
production, enhancing the skin's firmness and elasticity.
Thread lifts are less time-consuming and have a shorter
recovery than traditional facelift surgery, making them an
attractive option for non-surgical alternatives.
Conclusion
The aesthetic industry continuously evolves, driven by
groundbreaking innovations redefining beauty standards
and self-care practices. These emerging trends are reshaping
how we approach aesthetics, from AI-driven
personalization and virtual consultations to energy-based fat
reduction and nanotechnology in skincare. As technology
and research continue to advance, we can expect even more
exciting breakthroughs that will transform the industry,
offering individuals safer, more effective, and personalized
solutions to enhance their natural beauty and boost their
self-confidence. As consumers become more informed and
discerning, the aesthetic industry must embrace these
innovations to meet the evolving demands of its clientele.
By staying at the forefront of these advancements, aesthetic
professionals can contribute to a more beautiful and
confident world.

Trevor Steyn
Cra ing Bespoke and Sustainable Skincare
Solu ons with Long-Term Benefits
assionate about the skin microbiome, sustainable
Pliving, and preserving Africa's biodiversity, Trevor
Steyn's extensive experience in chemistry and
biotechnology, has led to the formation of companies that
are focused on topical probiotics and products that target
the skin microbiome. His entire portfolio of companies
provides certified organic, cruelty-free, fair trade, and
carbon-neutral personal care products.
In 1996, Trevor finished his master's degree in organic
chemistry after studying the subject. Prof. Siegfried
Drewes, his mentor, sparked his interest in the chemistry of
African plants. Trevor developed and established Esse
Skincare after comprehending the possibilities of several of
these botanicals for skin care. Esse's development started in
the year 2000 with a study of the African Sausage Tree,
Kigelia Africana. Esse was born in 2002, two years after
she had been in the making.
Below are the highlights of the interview, which shed light
on Trevor Steyn's work on the application of new probiotic
species and delivery methods to combat ageing and
optimise skin health.
Kindly tell us the source of inspiration and what led you
to serve the Medical Aesthetic Industry?
We were early movers in the skin microbiome space, and
we developed a strong understanding of the options
available to shift the microbiome towards healthy diversity.
Medical aesthetics is dominated by treatments that are fairly
invasive.
These treatments often disrupt the skin's microbiome,
leading to persistent inflammation and slower healing times.
This causes suboptimal results for the client. We see this as
an opportunity to apply new biotech techniques, like live
biotherapeutics, to reduce the risk of complications for
practitioners and optimize results for their clients.
Brief us about yourself and shed some light on your
journey at Esse Skincare.
I did a postgraduate degree in organic chemistry and
initially moved into drug discovery before starting Esse in
2002. In 2009, the Human Microbiome Project caught my
attention. I realized that the findings would fundamentally
change health care and skin care, so I started the process of
rebuilding myself as a microbiologist. The intersection of
chemistry and microbiology led to new techniques to shift
the microbial ecology of the skin. Over time, these have
yielded strong anti-aging results due to our ability to
optimize barrier function and reduce inflammation.
Can you elaborate on the science upon which your
products and services are based? How are they different
from other skincare products out in the market?
In February 2015, Esse became the first brand to use live
bacteria in a retail product. It isn't easy keeping them alive
in an off-the-shelf product at room temperature. We couldn't
use preservatives, and we had to develop encapsulation
technology that kept them in a dormant state until the
product was applied to the skin. We launched our probiotic
serum with one billion colony-forming units per ml, and
this product has become our hero product in more than 40
countries worldwide. We showed its efficacy in independent
trials in Bonn, Germany, and this brought the credibility
that we needed in the Medical Aesthetics channel. There are
currently only a handful of companies in the world that are
able to offer live topical probiotics.
Since then, we have launched a few new actives and
techniques that have the ability to nudge the microbial
ecology on the skin toward a more balanced state.

What areas, in your opinion, do the skincare products in
the market fail to address, when it comes to healthy
skincare?
The skin microbiome is largely in control of barrier
function, and barrier function is the skin's most important
role. Many of the products that we see on the market fail to
understand that high-foam surfactants and many other
synthetic ingredients are detrimental to tight junctions and
commensal skin microbes, so they create “leaky” skin with
a poor barrier function.
We hope to reduce inflammation by improving barrier
function and strengthening the skin microbiome, allowing it
to protect itself through the competitive exclusion of
pathogens. This takes around two months, but the long-term
results are worthwhile.
We're largely
a group of scien sts
that use the company
as a way to fund
the research that
we find exci ng.
March 2023
34|www.insightscare.com
In what way do you consider technological advances to
be a pathway in conducting your operations?
We're largely a group of scientists that use the company as a
way to fund the research that we find exciting. The skincare
industry has been treating skin in a hopelessly
oversimplified way, and there are so many ways to improve
upon current approaches to long-term skin health.
Understanding the deep complexity of the skin's interaction
with microbes drives us to avoid disrupting it, instead using
technological advances to mimic the conditions for which
we've evolved. This will allow us to reduce chronic
inflammation in the skin and return it to its ancestral state,
free of the inflammatory conditions that plague modern
humans.
What R&D advances are you leading at Esse Skincare
currently? How will they be beneficial to the customers?
We're doing a lot of work on mimicking skin lipids because
these are the primary nutrient source for commensal
microbes. Oils are very high in energy and come at a
substantial metabolic cost. However, our skin still produces
large amounts of unique oils that are found nowhere else in
the animal kingdom and are also absent from our internal
tissues.
Sapienic acid is named for our species, Sapiens, and it is the
most abundant fatty acid on human skin. We have managed
to find a source of this critically important fatty acid and
have included it in products designed to protect the skin
after invasive procedures.
There are no other brands that have access to this active, so
we're excited to pioneer another first in skincare. We are
also using UV light to modulate the skin microbiome and
boost Vitamin D levels in the skin.
What endeavours are you currently pursuing to
improve your service measures for the clients?
We are currently working on a personalized service for
clients that will reduce the number of products that they
need to purchase and provide only the actives that are
relevant to their skin concerns (and budget).
What are some of the challenges you face when
conducting projects, and how do you turn them into
opportunities for growth?
In our experience, we find new and interesting challenges in
every project. Usually, these are not the challenges that we
anticipated at the outset, but we generally keep a buoyant
attitude toward resolving them. Each challenge is an
opportunity to differentiate ourselves from our competition.
We find that most people give up too early.
What advice would you like to give to budding
entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who desire to venture
into the medical aesthetic industry?
Don't give up too early.
How do you envision scaling your services and
operations in 2023 and beyond?
We've recently expanded into Canada, and this opens up the
opportunity to drive sales in the USA, which will be new
territory for us. The market is structured differently in North
America, and there will be plenty for us to learn.
What are some of the testimonials or recognition that
accurately highlight your position in the market?
We've won awards around the world, but, to be honest, we
don't place much emphasis on those. Individual testimonials
are also too easy to rely on. A sample size of one doesn't
give us much information. We prefer statistically relevant
results as drivers of innovations that are effective. It is very
difficult to discern signal from noise in the skin microbiome
space. We will continue to run our sequencing studies, but
we understand that the client doesn't care about their
microbiome; they only care about visible improvements in
skin condition, so we will be sure to deliver those first.

  • 10. Rob Trow Leading and Ameliorating Skincare Happiness With contemporary developments, the world is redefining the notion of “what it means to care for oneself that includes skin health” Environ® Skin Care addresses skin health in an exceptional state of the art, ever evolving manner. Dr. Des Fernandes and Val Carstens, a brother and sister, created an extraordinary company and brand – Environ® Skin Care. For over the past three decades they have become industry leaders and icons garnering over 100 industry awards for leadership, innovation, manufacturing and ground breaking formulations. Carol and I have been blessed to help be the custodians and distributors of their creation for the United States and the Caribbean. Let’s drive through Rob’s inspiring story! The Journey – From Academics to CEO The company’s success in the United States is partly because of its leader and its vision in keeping with Des and Val’s creation. Rob Trow’s journey with DermaConcepts® is quite interesting. One would be surprised to know that he started his professional career as an academic, serving as a professor, Dean, and Executive Vice President of multiple well-known universities. WE CURRENTLY DIRECTLY EMPLOY OVER 50 TALENTED TERRITORY MANAGERS, LEADING INDUSTRY EDUCATORS, AND CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAMMATES WORKING WITH 2,500 CLIENTS. 5 Most Seasoned Leaders in Medical Aesthe c Industry 2023
  • 12. Then, while servicing as a respected academic, he developed a reputation as a renowned consultant to family businesses helping them through generational transformations. This work led him to be hired by one of his consulting clients to serve as a top executive of a company helping to lead in a transition from a regional to an international business with over 10,000 employees. Eventually, after thinking he was going to retire, he was recruited by his wife, Carol Trow, to help her grow her skincare and cosmeceutical sales, marketing, and distribution company. But the best part for her, as Rob reminisces about the beginning, he shares, “she didn’t have to pay me. From its inception, its CEO has helped DermaConcepts® USA to double every four years for the past 25 years. Rob Trow proudly shares, “We currently directly employ over 50 talented territory managers, leading industry educators, and customer service teammates working with 2,500 clients. Our teammates certainly add the most value to our company. They outshine us every day.” Caring For The Skin – The Why and The How? With advancing times, people are becoming cognizant about loving themselves. The most popular view of this broad term is understood as pampering the skin and keeping it healthy at all times. This is conveyed by the CEO of DermaConcepts® as he considers skin health and wellness as an essential aspect of overall well-being and self-care that affects physical, emotional, and mental health. To contribute actively to this, the company’s leader stresses the importance of education and training, which are the key to treating the skin effectively. He says, “Our education has been recognized by physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and estheticians as one of the best in the country. Regularly scheduled training seminars, from one to three-day programs, are held throughout the United States to introduce Environ® products and technology to skin care professionals and to provide intensive product knowledge.” This is aided by continuing education workshops that are provided regularly to update and refresh their clients on Environ’s newest products, protocols, procedures, and industry developments. In addition, seminars on skin science, retailing, skin consultation, professional treatment protocols, merchandising, marketing, and best practices for operating a successful esthetic clinic, are provided by their team. The DermaConcepts® team, aided by Environ South Africa, makes sure that these benefits are appropriate for all races, every skin type and are not restricted by gender or age. Skin Care for A Lifetime Environ® Skin Care provides serious, sustainable results over time. The products have impacted positively on every generation. Like Rob puts it, “It is not hope in a jar.” The company is considerate about everyone’s needs, and it ensures that everything is backed by scientific evidence and is suitable throughout generations of a household. Elaborating on how this is practiced, Rob says, “To get the best results, a skin consultation is needed as one product, or one strength is not suitable for all. It is a step-up system designed to address individual skin concerns to ensure healthy looking skin for a lifetime.” Aesthetically Sustainable Products Consumers are calibrating their needs to the environmental needs and therefore, it gets important for skincare companies to produce products that are sustainable as well as safe. At DermaConcepts®, Rob says, “Environ® SIMPLY PUT, WE LISTEN BEFORE WE SPEAK. ASK BEFORE WE RECOMMEND. WE STRONGLY BELIEVE THE WHOLE IS FAR GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS.
  • 15. maintains its own pharmaceutical grade factory using only ethically sourced and tested ingredients.” Along with production, it is also important to make it aesthetically sound in terms of product packaging to ensure consumer satisfaction, efficacy and also the safety of the product. The company has invested in its packaging that is designed to protect and ensure the effectiveness and results of the ingredients. Promoting Inclusive Skincare It is a common understanding that skin care is limited by gender and age. But DermaConcepts® is changing this notion as all its products are designed to maximize skin health. The breadth of offerings ensures that young, old, men, women, and skin of color can achieve optimum results. Citing an example, Rob says, “Our formulations are widely used in hospitals, burn centers, pediatric facilities, medical offices, and literally thousands of medical spas and wellness centers.” Additionally, Environ® Skin Care contains a vitamin A step-up system, and the product line is based on varying intensities and levels of ingredients (vitamins, peptides, growth factors, AHA’s) to ensure safe at-home and clinical treatments to meet all individual skin types, concerns, and lifestyles. A Mindful Skincare Routine DermaConcepts® annually offers over 4,000 in-person training and educational events plus a myriad of virtual programs on skin science, ingredients, products, and the latest technology available to ensure and enhance skin health. In addition, Rob and Carol have published over 140 articles and recently a book, for skin care professionals, on skin science and running a skincare practice – all unbranded. Rob shares, “Carol, I, and our team work tirelessly to debunk myths in the skin care industry and set straight some of the misconceptions about ingredients.” Bringing clarity to the statements, he further adds, “For example, while antioxidants are known to be protective against the effects of free radicals, they offer other benefits. That is, they are preventive and rejuvenating. Certain vitamins, most prominently Vitamin A, offers us both the preventive benefits of an effective antioxidant, while also providing the beneficial look of repair and rejuvenation.” CAROL, I, AND OUR TEAM WORK TIRELESSLY TO DEBUNK MYTHS IN THE SKIN CARE INDUSTRY AND SET STRAIGHT SOME OF THE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT INGREDIENTS.
  • 16. To promote an efficient skincare routine, Environ® Skin Care and its leaders are focusing on scientific research to explore key ingredients to bring uniqueness and trustworthiness to the product provision. Taking the example of vitamin A and vitamin C, Rob says, “Vitamin A has long been known as the “skin vitamin” but only recently has attention been focused on it as a “skin normalizer” and an indispensable factor in the maintenance of youthful-appearing and healthy-looking skin. Scientific research shows it helps to prevent and reverse the effects of photo-aging, and to improve the look of hydration. Environ® Skin Care has also pioneered the use of stabilized and highly effective forms of Vitamin C as ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate (VC-IP). Scientific studies show this is a fat-soluble and extremely stable form of vitamin C, making it more effective. Besides its basic action as a free radical scavenger, vitamin C has an important part to play in improving the appearance of firmer, less wrinkled skin. It also improves the look of uneven skin tone. For the healthiest-looking, most radiant skin, vitamin C is essential.” Maintaining empirical research as a guiding force for the products, Rob proudly says, “DermaConcepts® is proud to be the official United States distributor for Environ® Skin Care as it offers all this together with powerful antioxidants, inorganic UV-A & UV-B sun reflectants (titanium dioxide), pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol), growth factors, synergistic cocktails of peptides, the industry leading Cool Peel system and the targeted use of alpha and beta hydroxy acids.” A Guiding Light A leader acts as a luminescent person who not only helps the company grow but also helps its members grow. This is also true at DermaConcepts®, as its CEO shares, “Simply put, we listen before we speak. Ask before we recommend. We strongly believe the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.” And hence, a very important value that they instill in their colleagues is “family first.” The CEO’s Life Lessons Events affect every human being, making them learn more and shape them as individuals. The CEO shares the most important learnings that have helped him grow personally and professionally. He says, “Learning that it is OKAY to say I don’t know something and to ask and listen to others. Our success is due to the world wide Environ® family.

  • 19. James Beckman Revolu onizing Skin Health with Vision and Passion aring for your skin is not just about looking good; Cit's about keeping yourself healthy too. Your skin takes care of you, so it's essential to return the favor by taking care of it. That's why having a well-planned skincare routine is crucial – it's an investment in your overall well-being. The key to an effective skincare routine lies in using high- quality products that are safe and actually work. These products can work wonders in improving your skin's texture and appearance while also protecting it from the harmful effects of the sun and pollutants that can harm your health. For optimal results, selecting skincare essentials from a reputable brand like Therapon Skin Health is wise. Their products are meticulously crafted to complement each other, ensuring top-notch performance, and you can rely on their exceptional quality. This makes it much simpler to anticipate how your skin will respond when trying out new products from the same line. Therapon Skin Health, led by the experienced Dr. James Beckman, offers a wide range of products and procedures tailored to various skin conditions such as acne, aging skin, redness, and pigmentation issues. They also have a professional line available exclusively to qualified skin health professionals. In a recent interview, Dr. Beckman shared insights about the beginnings of Therapon Skin Health, highlighting the company's commitment to providing quality skin care solutions and his vision for its future. Please brief our audience about Therapon Skin Health. Kindly tell us the source of inspiration for starting a Medical Aesthetics company. I began my medical career in 1977 after graduating from Arkansas' Medical School and completing a plastic surgery residency. I treated patients in my plastic surgery practice in Arkansas for over twenty years. At the time, I never envisioned starting a skincare company. However, I wanted to provide my patients with the best skin care products and ingredients available to help their healing process, so I set out to develop products not available at the time that would improve their overall skin health and appearance. Having majored in chemistry and from treating severely burned patients, I was inspired to create my full line of product solutions for restoring full function and mobility to skin-grafted hands. This led to the development of Beckman's Skin Care Cream, which would later become the foundation product for Therapon Skin Health. The steps to restoring aging skin are to clean and gently remove damaged skin elements or cells, repair the skin, restore skin to its healthiest condition and protect skin from damage. In 1996, the Theraderm Skin Renewal system was developed, and we have continued to innovate and add breakthrough products ever since. Tell us more about your products and service offerings and what aspects make them stand out in the industry. What differentiates us is that all of our products are formulated by me as a plastic surgeon and chemistry major to restore function to damaged skin. I have personally seen probably every kind of trauma and skin problem 5 Most Seasoned Leaders in Medical Aesthe c Industry 2023 March 2023 17|www.insightscare.com

We first look at what is the cause of the disease or problem; then, we look at what ingredients can possibly rectify or solve the problem. We uniquely combine different products with other products rather than make one mega product that claims to do everything. This allows us to provide a very specific focus on getting the best result from the combination. This would be similar to preparing an excellent meal with 3-4 exceptional dishes that complement each of the others. Please tell us about your journey and how you have helped with the development and enhancement of the outreach of your company. Therapon products in the Theraderm brand enhance the quality of life through beautiful skin and a restored youthful appearance. We do this by controlling the factors that contribute to aging, such as damaged collagen structure, irregular pigment, and loss of elasticity. Prevention of daily, cumulative, permanent damage to the skin from UV exposure combined with restoration of damage already present is a key element in getting the exceptional results consistently seen. The life/work goal of a plastic surgeon has always been to restore full function and appearance to patients after injury or damage from disease or trauma. Time teaches that the skin is not simply the "painted surface" of the body. Its full- thickness qualities are perhaps the most functional part of one's life and self-esteem. Over years of treating severely burned patients, I realized my passion for developing a superior cream to restore mobility, suppleness, and softness to skin grafted hands – hands that could bend and grasp objects necessary for someone to have a better quality of life. My college degree in chemistry and passion for knowing the details of skin anatomy, physiology, and function, and numerous hours of research in the library led me to laboratory formulations and clinical testing. The goal was to find the "ultimate skin restoration cream." March 2023 18|www.insightscare.com
  • 21. Several years later, five women who all had excellent results in eliminating sagging skin from facelifts asked a familiar question within the same week: "What can erase fine lines, wrinkles, and make skin pigment even after a facelift removes sagging?" In the quest for a product that would correct these issues, I discovered a unique secret ingredient that not only enhanced moisturizer penetration but also had the side effect of erasing fine wrinkles and restoring youthful colouration to ageing facial skin! I can remember the spring day in 1988 when the clear vision came. The vision was to create a simplified daily skincare system of products that would restore and rejuvenate ageing facial skin to a beautiful, younger look, as well as make skin soft and pliable again. Each component of the system would have a special role in the system and yet be a fully "stand-alone" product. The result was the Theraderm Skin Health System that restores sun-damaged or aged skin and produces youthful, natural beauty. Taking only minutes per day, women (or men) of any age or ethnicity and skin type could now incorporate products into their beauty routine specifically focused on skin health. Other plastic surgeons heard about the products, so I began to provide these incredible new products to their patients. It was a natural progression to start a company to make sure it could reach the masses. In your opinion, what could be the future of the medical aesthetics industry post-pandemic? And how are you strategizing your company's operations for that future? As proven years ago, during the great depression, when both money and goods were scarce, women continued to spend money on skincare products. Little expense could make their skin appearance look pretty and youthful! Our plan is to continue providing exceptional skincare products that are proven to diminish aging appearance while restoring both youthful texture and coloration to skin. As an established leader, what would be your advice to the budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts aspiring to venture into the medical aesthetics industry? My father instilled many business principles in me as I grew up. He died suddenly in the summer after my first year in medical school, leaving behind a business with 56 employees that I needed to manage for a year and a mother and six sisters to care for, so I took a year off from med school. I luckily had good advisors as I ran the company and quickly learned about all aspects of business, which helped prepare me for running my future practice and business. My advice would be to stop waiting. I encourage every person of any age or station in life to wake up every morning and think about who and what they could do to effect change in their own lives and others' lives. How do you envision scaling your company's services in 2023 and beyond? My major in college was chemistry. This allows me to originate essential aspects of our product formulations to get properties that direct skin condition characteristics and desired actions. Each of our products is made using our own proprietary formulations. We choose specific containers and contract manufacturers for the custom production of our products to our specifications. Our manufacturing partners can scale up production to extremely large quantities if given a week or two lead times. March 2023 19|www.insightscare.com

  • 26. BFR Training Method: Backed by Science he growing demand for improvements and Tinnovations in training practices is changing the landscape of exercise at both professional and amateur levels. In the realm of science, researchers have studied the effectiveness of different methods that could offer a wide array of benefits ranging from the sports performance enhancement to rehabilitation. One such method that has gained interest over the past decade is blood flow restriction (BFR) training. What is known today as the BFR training method stems from the pivotal works of its inventor Dr. Yoshiaki Sato. Just about fifty years ago, he coined the name “KAATSU,” which could be roughly translated from Japanese as “added pressure.” Wouldn’t just anyone be curious to know more about a proven training method which may help develop strength, increase muscle size, and activate various metabolic processes without lifting heavy weight, but by tricking the body into thinking that it is working harder than it actually is? Yet, it was not until recently that researchers, practitioners, and other professionals were made to take a closer look at this unique technique as a result of its vast potential. What Is BFR Training? BFR integrates low-intensity (~20%–40% of 1-RM) resistance training along with partial blood flow restriction to the working muscles using inflatable air cuffs fixed in the proximal region of the limbs exercised. Most applications include the complete occlusion of venous flow, while the recommended pressure used to block the arterial flow ranges from 40 to 80%, and only in passive BFR, the cuff pressure is set between 80 to 100% for a short period. Although BFR is based on very low intensities, it has been shown to stimulate increases in muscle size and strength that are comparable to those seen following conventional high-intensity resistance training. BFR Devices in a Nutshell Many different devices are commonly used to facilitate BFR training, including elastic wraps or straps, inflatable pneumatic cuffs, and tourniquets. Since it is difficult to determine the amount of applied pressure, caution is advised when using some of them. Apropos of this, BFR devices could be generally divided into two groups. The first one refers to practical blood flow restriction (pBFR) training which was created in 2009. As an alternative to the traditional BFR, this type of training practice suggests the use of rigid elastic bands or knee wraps designed for occlusion training which are also affordable and practical. The second group involves inflatable pneumatic cuffs and tourniquets where the needed occlusion is created by inflating the air through an automatic device or handheld pump. This group can be further divided into two subgroups according to devices that automatically calculate the LOP (limb occlusion pressure) and the ones that require a Doppler ultrasound. The percentage of occlusion is calculated based on LOP, which is the minimum pressure needed to completely occlude the arterial blood flow. Dimensions of the applied device, the site of restriction, and individual physiology, such as limb circumference and diastolic blood pressure, all have an impact on the process of arterial blood restriction. Breaking Down the Benefits of BFR A growing body of evidence has shown that BFR can be used in physical therapy to aid in the recovery of elderly patients after knee arthroscopy or even more complex knee surgeries. Recent studies have also demonstrated that, when compared with low-load training, low-load BFR training is more effective, tolerable, and, therefore, a potential clinical rehabilitation tool. The current literature suggests that a significant increase in strength and sports performance is associated with the use of BFR training. March 2023 24|www.insightscare.com

Some of the findings have revealed that the muscular adaptations to BFR training are highly beneficial for elderly individuals, post-operative rehabilitation patients with compromised strength and/or joint stability, or professional athletes. When applied and performed appropriately, BFR can be used in everyday training as well as in rehabilitation settings. All this implies that BFR is intended for just about anyone, from professional athletes to older adults. However, continued research is more than vital if further advances are to be made. The First BFR Certification in the UAE Since its increasing popularity is undeniable, it is important to emphasize that if not performed under the supervision of a trained professional, BFR can cause severe health issues. Health, Exercise, and Research Center (HERC) is a Dubai- based company that recognized the importance of creating a course that can build one’s competence to lead people to change successfully. Among many other accredited courses within HERC’s Education department, this is the world’s first one that divides BFR usage according to its practical applicability to BFR Training and BFR Therapy. BFR Training Certification is aimed at personal trainers, sports coaches, and strength and conditioning coaches working with a healthy population in the gym environment. BFR Therapy Certification is aimed at physiotherapists, sports medicine specialists, and other healthcare providers who can benefit from BFR use in a clinical setting working with patients with low to moderate health impairment. Therefore, the course is organized in a way that enables individuals from different fields to further their careers and support those in need. All participants have the chance to practice with different BFR devices, from pBFR straps to inflatable cuffs. HERC’s Research Department is currently involved in a BFR research project collaborating with international researchers. The idea is to investigate the LOE (levels of evidence) within PRISMA’s guidelines for Systematic Reviews. The main objective is officially to register BFR as a method that can be used by physiotherapists and sports practitioners in the UAE. March 2023 26|www.insightscare.com

  • 32. Virtual Consultations and Augmented Reality One of the challenges faced by the aesthetic industry has been the difficulty of visualizing the potential results of a treatment before undergoing it. However, virtual consultations and augmented reality (AR) have revolutionized aesthetic care. Through sophisticated software, patients can now see simulated outcomes of various treatments on their own bodies, enabling them to make more informed decisions about the procedures they wish to pursue. This technology not only enhances the patient experience but also fosters better communication between clients and practitioners, leading to more realistic expectations and increased treatment success rates. Microneedling and Radiofrequency Combination Microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) treatments have gained popularity in recent years for their ability to rejuvenate the skin and improve its texture. Now, innovators in the aesthetic industry are combining these two techniques to create even more potent and transformative results. The combination of microneedling and RF energy stimulates collagen production more effectively, targeting a wider range of skin concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. This emerging innovation has shown promising results, making it a sought-after option for those seeking non-surgical skin tightening and rejuvenation. Energy-Based Fat Reduction While traditional liposuction remains a popular option for fat removal, advancements in energy-based fat reduction treatments offer a less invasive alternative. • 35. Trevor Steyn Cra ing Bespoke and Sustainable Skincare Solu ons with Long-Term Benefits assionate about the skin microbiome, sustainable Pliving, and preserving Africa's biodiversity, Trevor Steyn's extensive experience in chemistry and biotechnology, has led to the formation of companies that are focused on topical probiotics and products that target the skin microbiome. His entire portfolio of companies provides certified organic, cruelty-free, fair trade, and carbon-neutral personal care products. In 1996, Trevor finished his master's degree in organic chemistry after studying the subject. Prof. Siegfried Drewes, his mentor, sparked his interest in the chemistry of African plants. Trevor developed and established Esse Skincare after comprehending the possibilities of several of these botanicals for skin care. Esse's development started in the year 2000 with a study of the African Sausage Tree, Kigelia Africana. Esse was born in 2002, two years after she had been in the making. Below are the highlights of the interview, which shed light on Trevor Steyn's work on the application of new probiotic species and delivery methods to combat ageing and optimise skin health. Kindly tell us the source of inspiration and what led you to serve the Medical Aesthetic Industry? We were early movers in the skin microbiome space, and we developed a strong understanding of the options available to shift the microbiome towards healthy diversity. Medical aesthetics is dominated by treatments that are fairly invasive. These treatments often disrupt the skin's microbiome, leading to persistent inflammation and slower healing times. This causes suboptimal results for the client. We see this as an opportunity to apply new biotech techniques, like live biotherapeutics, to reduce the risk of complications for practitioners and optimize results for their clients. Brief us about yourself and shed some light on your journey at Esse Skincare. I did a postgraduate degree in organic chemistry and initially moved into drug discovery before starting Esse in 2002. In 2009, the Human Microbiome Project caught my attention. I realized that the findings would fundamentally change health care and skin care, so I started the process of rebuilding myself as a microbiologist. The intersection of chemistry and microbiology led to new techniques to shift the microbial ecology of the skin. Over time, these have yielded strong anti-aging results due to our ability to optimize barrier function and reduce inflammation. Can you elaborate on the science upon which your products and services are based? How are they different from other skincare products out in the market? In February 2015, Esse became the first brand to use live bacteria in a retail product. It isn't easy keeping them alive in an off-the-shelf product at room temperature. We couldn't use preservatives, and we had to develop encapsulation technology that kept them in a dormant state until the product was applied to the skin. We launched our probiotic serum with one billion colony-forming units per ml, and this product has become our hero product in more than 40 countries worldwide. We showed its efficacy in independent trials in Bonn, Germany, and this brought the credibility that we needed in the Medical Aesthetics channel. There are currently only a handful of companies in the world that are able to offer live topical probiotics. Since then, we have launched a few new actives and techniques that have the ability to nudge the microbial ecology on the skin toward a more balanced state. 5 Most Seasoned Leaders in Medical Aesthe c Industry 2023 March 2023 33|www.insightscare.com
  • 36. What areas, in your opinion, do the skincare products in the market fail to address, when it comes to healthy skincare? The skin microbiome is largely in control of barrier function, and barrier function is the skin's most important role. Many of the products that we see on the market fail to understand that high-foam surfactants and many other synthetic ingredients are detrimental to tight junctions and commensal skin microbes, so they create “leaky” skin with a poor barrier function. We hope to reduce inflammation by improving barrier function and strengthening the skin microbiome, allowing it to protect itself through the competitive exclusion of pathogens. This takes around two months, but the long-term results are worthwhile. We're largely a group of scien sts that use the company as a way to fund the research that we find exci ng. • 37. In what way do you consider technological advances to be a pathway in conducting your operations? We're largely a group of scientists that use the company as a way to fund the research that we find exciting. The skincare industry has been treating skin in a hopelessly oversimplified way, and there are so many ways to improve upon current approaches to long-term skin health. Understanding the deep complexity of the skin's interaction with microbes drives us to avoid disrupting it, instead using technological advances to mimic the conditions for which we've evolved. This will allow us to reduce chronic inflammation in the skin and return it to its ancestral state, free of the inflammatory conditions that plague modern humans. What R&D advances are you leading at Esse Skincare currently? How will they be beneficial to the customers? We're doing a lot of work on mimicking skin lipids because these are the primary nutrient source for commensal microbes. Oils are very high in energy and come at a substantial metabolic cost. However, our skin still produces large amounts of unique oils that are found nowhere else in the animal kingdom and are also absent from our internal tissues. Sapienic acid is named for our species, Sapiens, and it is the most abundant fatty acid on human skin. We have managed to find a source of this critically important fatty acid and have included it in products designed to protect the skin after invasive procedures. There are no other brands that have access to this active, so we're excited to pioneer another first in skincare. We are also using UV light to modulate the skin microbiome and boost Vitamin D levels in the skin. What endeavours are you currently pursuing to improve your service measures for the clients? We are currently working on a personalized service for clients that will reduce the number of products that they need to purchase and provide only the actives that are relevant to their skin concerns (and budget). What are some of the challenges you face when conducting projects, and how do you turn them into opportunities for growth? In our experience, we find new and interesting challenges in every project. Usually, these are not the challenges that we anticipated at the outset, but we generally keep a buoyant attitude toward resolving them. Each challenge is an opportunity to differentiate ourselves from our competition. We find that most people give up too early. What advice would you like to give to budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who desire to venture into the medical aesthetic industry? Don't give up too early. How do you envision scaling your services and operations in 2023 and beyond? We've recently expanded into Canada, and this opens up the opportunity to drive sales in the USA, which will be new territory for us. The market is structured differently in North America, and there will be plenty for us to learn. What are some of the testimonials or recognition that accurately highlight your position in the market? We've won awards around the world, but, to be honest, we don't place much emphasis on those. Individual testimonials are also too easy to rely on. A sample size of one doesn't give us much information. We prefer statistically relevant results as drivers of innovations that are effective. It is very difficult to discern signal from noise in the skin microbiome space. We will continue to run our sequencing studies, but we understand that the client doesn't care about their microbiome; they only care about visible improvements in skin condition, so we will be sure to deliver those first.
