This document provides an overview of properties of matter for a 5th grade science unit. It defines matter as everything around us that is living or non-living. It then lists three key characteristics of all matter: mass, which is the amount of matter an object has and is measured using a balance; volume, which is the amount of space an object takes up and is measured using a measuring cylinder; and defines the kilogram as the standard unit for measuring mass.
