The abacus was the first calculating device, created in China over 5,000 years ago. John Napier then invented Napier's Bones to aid in multiplying large numbers. Blaise Pascal subsequently developed the Pascaline, one of the earliest mechanical calculators. Charles Babbage later designed the Analytical Machine to perform complex calculations, and Herman Hollerith built the Tabulating Machine to help census takers count populations more efficiently.
