The abacus was the first calculating device, created in China over 5,000 years ago. John Napier then invented Napier's Bones to aid in multiplying large numbers. Blaise Pascal subsequently developed the Pascaline, one of the earliest mechanical calculators. In 1835, Charles Babbage built the Analytical Machine, an early general-purpose computer. Herman Hollerith then invented the tabulating machine to help count populations in censuses.
