Herman Hollerith invented a tabulating machine while working at the Census Bureau in the 1880s to help organize population data more efficiently. The tabulating machine allowed information to be collected and sorted mechanically, improving on manual methods. Hollerith's invention helped automate the census and provided one of the first applications of punched cards to represent and process data.
