Srnart car - In 1998 Daimler Chrysler introduced a new car, a new brand and a new look withi
new technology in nine European Union countries. It is named 'Smart'. It is only 25,,:gq mm
long, 1511 mmwide and l529mmhigh. It seats two adults orone adult and two chffin. It
nrns at 20 kmph/ litre. Upholstery is fabulous. Swatch watch was the inspiration for doveloping
this car. ln the early stages of the project when Daimler - Benz and SMH (*$le. of swatch
watch) formed a joint venture, the car was called Swatch mobile. This conoept was based on
i.iicoies Hayek's (Chairman of SiviH) conviciion that customers became automaticaily attache<i
to cars just as they do to watches. Hayek noted that safety should be"a key selling point
declaring "this car will have the crash security of a Mercedes" ne?dftftion as it operates on
Hayek predicted worldwide sales would reach one million units with the US accounting for
about halfthe market. .;'ry'
ln 1998, shortly after the introduction, the joint - ventrft between SMH and Daimler - Benz
ended when Daimler - Benz bought out SMH's stake. Hayak was disillusioned with Dailmer -
Beru. Daimler- Benz found Hayak difficult to worn<rqi{h.
To date Smart car has two major criticisms - sa&ty and price. There were reports of several
accidents. ln response the company developed't:3hrust Plus", a software package that will cut
power if the wheels start to slip.
As for the price, it originally sold fop.S*l$,500. After a period of disappointing sales in Italy
and France, the price was reduced t*ffi300. Although many buyers of the smart car have high
incomes or already own two cars, th$ tre concerned about the price value relationship.

Weld Well Company
Weld Well (WW), a leading company, has been buying its office supplies from the sarne
supplier for some time. Jayanta, a salesman of the office supply company, has been calling
on WW for over 3 years. Much to Jayanta's dismay, it has always been the practice of WW
to buy the smallest size available of a particular for-part preprinted billing form at a cost of
Rs.615 for 10,000 forms. These forms contain the WW logo and standard information
printed on them. The rationale for the particular buying policy was to spend the least amount
of money possible on office stationery items.
Recently, Mr. Thakkar of WW attended a training programme on supply chain management
(SCM) arranged by a local business school, which dealt with inventory systems and material
management Thakkar was anxious to save WW money by applying the techniques he
learned in the class. When Jayanta contacted Thakkar he was amazed to learn that he wished
to purchase the largest lot size of the for-part billing form. It was 30,000 forms at Rs.1750.
Jayanta could not believe the sudden change in policy. Upon questioning Thakkar, he found
that he used a quantitative model by which the cost of inventory holding and the ordering
costs can be balanced, yet maintaining adequate office supplies. Thakkar explained that by
analyzng all the relevant variable costs, he could save substantially (on an annual basis) by
purchasing the larger quantity of pre-printed billing forms.

Explain the rationale of Mr. Thakkar of buying a large quantity.
What is the annual cost saving of the larger order?

Margo : The Brand's Sustainabilitlz at Risk
Margo is one of the oldest herbal soaps in India. The brand which is more than 85 years old
is famous for its neem content. The brand although is synonymous with neem is increasing*y
being sidelined by the later entrants. For quite sometime since the larmch of the brand, it had
a dedicated customer base and since the product was unique due to its medieh{',,dalue,
customers were found to be by and large loyal. The core brand identity of Iprgo' was its
physical attribute (composition) - neem. ,,,
' ","'' "
Wittr tne passage of time, Margo was found to be a failure in understandipg'the changing
dynamics of Indian consumers. More and more choices began to unfold defore the Indian
consumer and Margo was gradually being sidelined. Margo was posltioned as 'complete
skin care soap' when market became fragmented with lot of products positioning based an
different attributes, Margo was sidelined as a medical soap.
The brand had certain inherent negatives. The fragrance was not attractive nor the shape. It
was also less lathering compared to its competitors. dvlargo changed hand from Shaw
Wallace to Henkel. Although it was relaunched in
-2,0$3
with a new fragrance and shape, it
did not quite excite the market. The brand was retrdtioned with the tagline "Margo skin
clear skin'. The brand had a following in the states of AP, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal. The
brand was however found to ignore the youlh s€gment of the Indian market with Lifebuoy
herbal variant and other established brands with neem as major content Margo's
sustainability was found to be at rish "Margo needed to rejuvenate itself. The company's
branding team felt that celebrity endoisement might help the brand. Rani Mukerji was roped
in as the brand's face. However it r,yas largely felt that the declining appeal of the actress
among the masses proved to fu: &deterrent in the brand's turnaround. Ivlar"eo nee<is to find

  • 6. I2MBA41 CASE STUDY Weld Well Company Weld Well (WW), a leading company, has been buying its office supplies from the sarne supplier for some time. Jayanta, a salesman of the office supply company, has been calling on WW for over 3 years. Much to Jayanta's dismay, it has always been the practice of WW to buy the smallest size available of a particular for-part preprinted billing form at a cost of Rs.615 for 10,000 forms. These forms contain the WW logo and standard information printed on them. The rationale for the particular buying policy was to spend the least amount of money possible on office stationery items. Recently, Mr. Thakkar of WW attended a training programme on supply chain management (SCM) arranged by a local business school, which dealt with inventory systems and material management Thakkar was anxious to save WW money by applying the techniques he learned in the class. When Jayanta contacted Thakkar he was amazed to learn that he wished to purchase the largest lot size of the for-part billing form. It was 30,000 forms at Rs.1750. Jayanta could not believe the sudden change in policy. Upon questioning Thakkar, he found that he used a quantitative model by which the cost of inventory holding and the ordering costs can be balanced, yet maintaining adequate office supplies. Thakkar explained that by analyzng all the relevant variable costs, he could save substantially (on an annual basis) by purchasing the larger quantity of pre-printed billing forms. a. b. Ouestions: Explain the rationale of Mr. Thakkar of buying a large quantity. What is the annual cost saving of the larger order? (10 Marks) (10 Marks) 2 of2
