The Mississippi River
• The longest river in the United States is
the Mississippi River.
• It is over 2,000 miles long.
• The name “Mississippi” came from the
Native Americans, who called it “misi-
zuhi”, meaning Great River.
• The Mississippi starts
in the state of
Minnesota, flowing
southwards toward
and ending in the Gulf
of Mexico.
• It starts in Minnesota
and travels along the
borders of Wisconsin,
Iowa, Illinois, Missouri,
Kentucky, Tennessee,
Arkansas, Louisiana
and Mississippi.
• During the early days of the United States,
there were huge paddle boats that
traveled up and down the Mississippi.
• It was a very important means of
transportation.

Dams
• People use waterways to build dams.
• A dam is a barrier that holds water.
• Dams can provide power and electricity.
• The can also be used to collect water for use
in different states where there is a shortage
of water.
Hoover Dam
• One of the best-
known dams is
the Hoover Dam
in Nevada.
• It is in the Black
Canyon of the
Colorado River.
Mountain Ranges
• Another natural landform is the mountain
ranges. The Appalachian Mountains run
down the eastern states.
• The Rocky Mountains cover much of the
western United States.

• The Rocky Mountains cover
much of the western United
States.
• They stretch over 3,000 miles
from British Columbia in western
Canada to New Mexico in the
United States.
• Higher than the Appalachians.
The Appalachians Mountains
• The Appalachian Mountains run
down the eastern states.
• They begin in Maine and can be
found all the way in Mississippi and
Alabama.
• They are some of the oldest
mountains in the world.
