Heritage Committee during your Presidency, inclusive of August 25th, 2019, the actual
400th anniversary of the “First (recorded) Arrivals” of pirated Africans from the Kwanza

On the day Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced his endorsement of Sen. Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic presidential nomination it was reported Kenney has no plan to remove the controversial Frank Rizzo monument from Thomas Paine Plaza. Rizzo is a former mayor and police commissioner who was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice for a pattern of police brutality that “shocks the conscience.” Sen. Warren supports removal of Confederate monuments. The family-financed Rizzo monument memorializes a racist who trampled on civil rights, urged supporters to “vote white” and traumatized the African American community.

Final Primary Source Project What are primary sources? Primary sources are documents, artifacts, images, music, and other types of evidence of the past produced by people living at the time of an historical event. How do I complete this project? First, read the documents in the primary source packet below. Take some notes on the sources - what is each saying? Use the analysis tool (click here) if you think it might help you keep track of each source (this is optional and will not be turned in). Be sure to consider the questions following each of the primary sources - do not write responses, but consider the questions to help you contextualize and understand each primary source. Next, consider that from 1775 to 1830, many African Americans gained freedom from slavery, yet during the same period the institution of slavery expanded. Explain why BOTH of those changes took place (100 points). Analyze the ways that BOTH free African Americans and enslaved African Americans responded to the challenges confronting them (100 points). Use the documents in the primary source packet and your knowledge of the institution of slavery (refer to our textbook, chapters 10 - 14), and abolitionist and reform movements in your answer (100 points). This entire project is worth 300 points. Finally, write a 5-paragraph essay answering the question above. For each claim you make, support it with a quote from a primary source you've used (and say which primary source you are quoting). There is no "right" or "wrong" answer - you can write about how you interpret the primary sources. Just be sure to use the primary sources in your essay to show you've read and understood their meanings; and that you can use evidence from the past to support your ideas. The Poor People's Campaign, starting in April, is being organized by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) with the support and participation of many local groups and individuals. WHO WILL BE IN THE POOR PEOPLE'S CAMPAIGN? At the start, several thousand poor people will go to Washington. We will be young and old, jobless fathers, welfare mothers, farmers and laborers . We are Negroes, American Indians, Puerto Ricans, Mexican-Americans, poor white people. WHERE DO THESE POOR PEOPLE LIVE? All across the nation. SCLC is recruiting poor people in I 0 big cities and five South- ern states. Poor people in all other communities and cities are also invited to join the Campaign. Here’s a outline focusing more explicitly on the racial implications and historical context: ### The Modern Era: Reckoning with the Past to Rebuild the Future - Recognizing the historical context and the continuation of systemic biases within technology development is crucial. Center for American Studies at Concord Initiatives of The Citizens Movement to Revive the Spirit of Public Service v20230729 Center for American Studies at Concord (Massachusetts) www.concord-ian.us info@concord-ium.us The Citizens’ Movement to Revive the Spirit of Public Service ^ On July 4th, 2023, The Center for American Studies <www.concord- ium.us> launched WE THE PEOPLE: The Citizens’ Movement to Revive the Spirit of Public Service in Concord, Massachusetts, the crucible of the American Revolution, where the shot was fired “heard ‘round the world.” The vision of The Citizens’ Movement to Revive the Spirit of Public Service was granted to Stuart-Sinclair Weeks north of Concord in Littleton, NH, on January 6TH and 7th, 2016 during New Hampshire’s primary season at the conclusion of a county political party meeting. At the time, Stuart-Sinclair was managing a NH gubernatorial campaign and had run Dennis Kucinich’s 2000 “First-in-the-Nation” presidential campaign. Stuart-Sinclair’s family had served for the last 9 generations in state or national office. The Citizens’ Movement offers a response to George Washington’s resounding words from his Farewell Address: “... Let me now take a more comprehensive view and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the Spirit of Party.” Simply expressed, We the People have some catching up to do, a good two centuries and a quarter worth of catching up. The party/parties is/are over, we suggest, drawing to their fitful, divisive, and partisan end. The purpose of the Citizens’ Movement is to work with progressive leaders in all of our existing parties to lay to rest, put out of its misery, give its last rites, and pay our respects to that divisive partisan spirit that seeks to divide and conquer us, our Dis-United States, that seeks to hold sway over our land. The Citizens’ Movement to Revive the Spirit of Public Service encourages fellow citizens to step forward and assume the mantle of the Constitutional office to which they feel called. The offices we refer to range from president all the way up to local servants, public servants — in the spirit of Dr. King’s words: “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” Specifically, fellow citizens are called to step forward as standard (flag) bearers and placeholders on behalf of We, The People.
