over the years?

over 150 years later. The first set of magazines where titles: country life, amateur gardening,
cycling weekly. So there main target audience when they started where people who enjoyed the
outdoors and the countryside. At the start of the 1900’s around the 30’s they introduced a
magazine called ‘Woman's own’ so adding a large target audience of women. This continuing
into the 1940’s. In the 1950’s the upsurge of the music scene heralded. Focusing on music
lovers. The 60’s and 70’s went back to focusing on women again with homes and gardens and
ideal homes magazines. The change from newspaper to magazine meant a change in
technology, this is because they are a lot harder to produce. All of the 9 types of magazines
focus on a specific target audience. As well as this they also focus on sub genres.
Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine?
• IPC may be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine because of how broad their
target audiences have been over the years and how long their magazines have been
published for so they are well known, popular and know what they are doing. This means a
wider audience reach so many people will know about this magazine and be buying it. As
they have done some of the biggest magazine deals in the UK a wide range of target
audiences would see this magazine so it could have a huge impact on music and their
magazines in this day and age. I would choose IPC to publish my magazine because they are
very well known and are very popular, this would have a positive impact on my magazine.
What sorts of genres of music/types of magazines might they be likely to
publish?
• The sort of genres of music they may be likely to publish could be would be ones that aren't
very well known, this is because they wouldn’t want to be publishing ones that other
magazines have as that means they may be competing with other magazines. As they are
very successful with NME they would have experience with genres such as indie rock and
genres like these which is not something a lot of music magazines focus on.
Why might alternative publishers like Bauer be appropriate?
• Alternative publishers such as Bauer would be more appropriate because they do not
currently publish a magazine that is specifically for music. Due to this it means they would be
available if they did want to publish a music magazine. Bauer would be good to use as they
are extremely successful with over seven music magazines ranging from rock too pop. They
also have experience in TV so this could potentially be a benefit as not many music magazines
do.
