Catheters can be inserted into arteries and guided using X-rays to perform balloon angioplasty, stent placement, and other procedures to treat narrowed or blocked arteries. Percutaneous coronary intervention involves using a balloon catheter through a guide catheter to treat coronary artery disease. Catheters are also used to close congenital heart defects, implant pacemakers and defibrillators, perform cardiac ablation to treat arrhythmias, and treat valve stenosis.
