CONDITIONAL3
We use 3rd Conditional:
- Regrets and disappoinments.
- has two clauses.
- If clause (condition)+Main clause
(result)
Use
• - talk about regrets in the past
• - hypothetical and unreal past and result
• -We wish we could change something in
the past.
• -Tell someone off about something they did
in the past.
Example:
• If Ihad leftearlier,I wouldn´thave missedmy flight.
• If ithad rained, you wouldhave gottenwet.
• You would have gottenwetif ithad rained.
• You would have passedyour examifyou had workedharder.
• If you hadworkedharder, you would havepassedyour exam.
Contractions
• Remember 2 rules:
• 1. would never appears in the if-clause so
if 'd appears in the if clause, it must be
abbreviating had.
• 2. had never appears before have so if 'd
appears on a pronoun just before have, it
must be abbreviating would.
Examples
• If I had known you were in hospital, I would
have visited you.
• If I'd known you were in hospital, I'd have
visited you.
• If you had given me your e-mail, I would
have written to you.
• If you'd given me your e-mail, I'd have
written to you.
Form
If clause (condition) Main clause(result)
