This document provides information about the 3rd conditional, which is used to talk about regrets and disappointments involving hypothetical or unlikely past situations. It has two clauses: an "if" clause describing the condition, and a main clause describing the result. Examples are given to illustrate expressing regret over something that could have been done differently in the past, along with explanations of the past perfect and perfect conditional tenses used. Contractions and forms are also covered.

5. Contractions
• Remember 2 rules:
• 1. would never appears in the if-clause so
if 'd appears in the if clause, it must be
abbreviating had.
• 2. had never appears before have so if 'd
appears on a pronoun just before have, it
must be abbreviating would.

• If I had known you were in hospital, I would
have visited you.
• If I'd known you were in hospital, I'd have
visited you.
• If you had given me your e-mail, I would
have written to you.
• If you'd given me your e-mail, I'd have
written to you.

• It indicates an action that someone would have donein the past. It describes what
one would have done differently
