CLAUSE: GROUP OF WORDS THAT CONTAIN A SUBJECT AND A VERB
There are 4 main types of if sentences in
English, often called conditional
sentences.
These sentences are in two halves (clauses):
• the if part (if clause) (dependent clause)
(unless, in case, what if, provided, supposing, suppose, but for, when,
whenever)
• the other part where you can use words such as can, will, may,
might, could and would (main clause)(indpendent clause)
4 TYPES OF CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
ZERO
FIRST (open/real)
SECOND (closed/unreal)
THIRD (un fulfilled conditions)
Here is a chart to help you to visualize the basic English conditionals. Do not take the
50% and 10% figures too literally. They are just to help you.
COMPARE ZERO CONDITIONAL WITH
OTHER CONDITIONALS
PROBABILITY CONDITIONAL EXAMPLE TIME
100% ZERO If you heat ice, it
melts.
ANY TIME
50% FIRST If it rains, I will stay at
home.
FUTURE
10% SECOND If I won the lottery, I
would buy a car.
FUTURE
0% THIRD I would have picked you,
if you would have called
me.
PAST
What Is The Zero Conditional?
Zero conditional sentences are used to talk
about:-
facts or general truths that are always true,
• like scientific facts
• Habitual factual conditionals
• Commands
• General rules
If I mix blue and yellow colours, I get green colour
(condition clause) (main clause)
(dependent clause) (independent clause)
NOTE: Don’t forget to use a comma after the if clause
HOW TO FORM ZERO CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
I get Green colour If I mix Blue and Yellow colours
(main clause) ( condition clause)
NOTE: Don’t use a comma after the if clause
As in all conditional sentences, the order of the clauses is
not fixed. You may have to rearrange the pronouns and
adjust punctuation when you change the order of the
clauses, but the meaning is identical.
IF CONDITION RESULT
IF PRESENT SIMPLE SIMPLE PRESENT
If I get sick, I go to the doctor
If teacher appreciates students
work,
It boosts them
If You work hard, You will succeed
RESULT IF CONDITION
PRESENT SIMPLE PRESENT SIMPLE
I go to doctor if I get sick
It boosts the students if Teacher appreciates their work
You will succeed If You work hard
In zero conditional sentences, you can replace "if" with
"when", because both express general truths. The meaning
will be unchanged.
If clause(condition) Main clause(result)
If+ simple present +simple present
If this thing happens This follows
We can usually substitute ‘when’ for ‘if’ in zero
conditional sentences.
If you heat water, it boils.
When you heat water, it boils
3. CAUSE AND EFFECT:
If you push the button, the volume increases.
If you close the door, it locks automatically.
4. ROUTINE
I sanitize my hands when I touch anything in public
places.
She uses glasses when she drives.
COMMANDS:
If you want to book the tickets, check in
advance.
If you plan to eat out side, inform me.
REAL world:
If you want to win the race, practice everyday.
FORM/STRUCTURE
If + Present Simple + Present Simple
Positive
If babies are hungry, they cry.
You are fit if you exercise.
 If I study well, I pass in the exam.
Negative
•when babies are not hungry, they may not cry.
• as long as you do not exercise, you gain weight.
•If I don’t study well, I do not pass in the exam.
Questions
Do babies cry if they are hungry?( suppose babies are hungry,
do they cry?)
Do we gain weight if we do not exercise?
Do we pass the exam if we do not study well?
