About This Chapter
This chapter describes the exterior, functions, slot assignment, ports, indicators, remote electrical
tilt (RET) system, and engineering specifications of an AAU.

2.2 Functions of an AAU
The function of an AAU is performed by the functional modules (AU and RU).

Description
AU An AU uses two groups of high-frequency antennas, which are shared by the
active and passive modules through a combiner. An AU performs the
following functions:
l Provides AU arrays, RF combination, feed power, phase shift network,
and drive system.
l Provides built-in remote control units (RCUs) that can control circuits.
l Provides the power supply channel and communication ports between an
AU and an RU.
l Provides ports for AAU mounting kits.
l Provides ports for connecting to passive RF modules operating in 2.6
GHz.

Functional
Module
Description
RU An RU uses the wideband technology and supports ultra wideband of 1800
MHz and 2100 MHz. It can be configured with only the 1800 MHz frequency
band, only the 2100 MHz frequency band, or both the 1800 MHz and 2100
MHz frequency bands. An RU performs the following functions:
l Receives downlink baseband data from the BBU and sends uplink
baseband data to the BBU.
l On the RX channel, down-converts RF signals into IF signals, amplifies
them, and performs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC). On the TX
channel, filters out downlink signals, performs digital-to-analog
conversion (DAC), up-converts RF signals to the TX band, combines
wideband signals of the 1.8 GHz and 2.1 GHz frequency bands, and
performs dead peer detection (DPD).
l Multiplexes receive signals and transmits signals on the RF channel.
l Provides CPRI ports for CPRI convergence and distribution and a -48 V
DC port.
l Protects and filters out RF signals.

Configuration of Passive Modules for an AAU
Active and passive modules share the electrical tilt. When each active module is configured with
only one frequency band and each passive module is configured with two TX channels and two
or four RX channels, TX channels of active modules and passive modules need to be configured
on different antenna arrays.
The following figure shows the passive configurations of an AAU.

l 1.8A+2.6P(2T2R/2T4R): TX/RX ports on an RFU or RRU are connected to the 2500-2690
(yL)(+) and 2500-2690(yL)(-) ports and RX ports on the RFU or RRU are connected to the
2500-2690(yyR)(+) and 2500-2690(yyR)(-) ports at the bottom of the AAU.
l 1.8A+2.6P(2T2R/2T4R): TX/RX ports on an RFU or RRU are connected to the 2500-2690
(yyR)(+) and 2500-2690(yyR)(-) ports and RX ports on the RFU or RRU are connected to
the 2500-2690(yL)(+) and 2500-2690(yL)(-) ports at the bottom of the AAU.
l 1.8A/2.1A/(1.8+2.1)A+2.6P(4T4R): Cables are connected according to principles in the
configuration of 4T4R.

2.5 RET System of an AAU
The remote electrical tilt (RET) system of an AAU consists of the remote control unit (RCU),
motor, gearing, and phase shifter. In the RET system, the RCU is used to remotely adjust the
downtilts of AU beams.
RET Function
The RCU in the RET system of an AAU receives control signals from the base station and drives
the gearing in the AU through the step motor to drive the phase shifter in the AU, thereby
adjusting the downtilt of the AU.
The following figure shows the working principle of the RET system of an AAU.

RET Configuration Principles
The RET configuration principles are as follows:
l The serial numbers of logical RCUs, which do not have links, can be scanned by any RET
ports.
l Links have no priority, and apply the first-come first-served principle. Only one AISG link
can be established for an RCU serial number. If a link needs to be switched, you must delete
the configuration on the link so that the link can be released.
l After the RCU link is established, the RCU serial number is not displayed in the scanning
result of other RET ports.

RCU Serial Numbers
An AAU has two RCU serial numbers, which are printed on the AU label and uniquely identify
the RCU.
An RCU serial number has 19 characters and its encoding scheme is as follows: Company code
(2 digits) + Device type (7 digits) + Reserved field (2 digits) + Year (1 digit) + Month (1 digit)
+ Sequence number (4 digits) + DIN position (1 digit) + array position (1 digit).
The following table describes the meaning of each field in an RCU serial number.

3Optical Modules
An optical module transmits optical signals between an optical port and a fiber optic cable.
NOTE
l The exteriors of an optical module and the label on an optical module in this section are for reference
only. The actual exteriors may be different.
l Boards or RF modules supporting only the 1.25 Gbit/s CPRI port rate, for example, the GTMU or
RRU3908 V1, cannot use optical modules supporting a 9.8 Gbit/s CPRI port rate.

There is a label on each optical module, which provides information such as the rate, wavelength,
and transmission mode, as shown in the following figure.

Optical Module Type
Optical modules can be divided into single- and multimode optical modules, which can be
distinguished as follows:
l The puller of a single-mode optical module is blue and the puller of a multimode optical
module is black or gray.
l The transmission mode is displayed as "SM" on the label of a single-mode optical module
and "MM" on the label of a multimode optical module.

4AAU Cables
About This Chapter
This chapter describes AAU cables.
4.1 AAU Cable List
This section describes the connector types and installation positions of AAU cables, providing
reference for cable installation and replacement.
4.2 AAU PGND Cable
An AAU PGND cable connects an AAU and an external ground bar for proper grounding of the
AAU. The maximum length of an AAU PGND cable is 8 m (26.25 ft).
4.3 AAU Power Cable
An AAU power cable feeds external -48 V DC power into an AAU. The maximum length of an
AAU power cable between the AAU and its power supply is 100 m (328.08 ft).
4.4 CPRI Fiber Optic Cable
CPRI fiber optic cables are classified into multimode fiber optic cables and single-mode fiber
optic cables. They transmit CPRI signals.
4.5 Feeder
A feeder connects an RRU and an AAU and transmits signals between the base station and the
antenna system.
4.6 AISG Multi-Wire Cable
An AISG multi-wire cable connects an RRU and an AAU to transmit control signals from a base
station to an RET antenna. When the RRU is connected to the RET antenna, an AISG multi-

4.7 AISG Extension Cable
When the distance between an RRU and an AAU is longer than 5 m (16.4 ft), an AISG multi-

cable is used to extend the AISG multi-wire cable. An AISG extension cable is 15 m (49.21 ft).

4.2 AAU PGND Cable
An AAU PGND cable connects an AAU and an external ground bar for proper grounding of the
AAU. The maximum length of an AAU PGND cable is 8 m (26.25 ft).
A PGND cable is a green or green and yellow cable. An OT terminal is installed at each end of
the cable. The following figure shows the exterior of a PGND cable.

NOTE
l If the customer prepares the PGND cable, a copper-core cable with a cross-sectional area of 16 mm2

l You can determine the color of the cable and whether to use corresponding two-hole OT terminals
based on local regulations.

4.3 AAU Power Cable
An AAU power cable feeds external -48 V DC power into an AAU. The maximum length of an
AAU power cable between the AAU and its power supply is 100 m (328.08 ft).
NOTE
If the power equipment is provided by customers, the 20 A circuit breakers are recommended.

The following figure shows the exterior of an AAU power cable. The connector at one end of
an AAU power cable is an EPC5 connector and the connector at the other end depends on the
power equipment.

4.4 CPRI Fiber Optic Cable
CPRI fiber optic cables are classified into multimode fiber optic cables and single-mode fiber
optic cables. They transmit CPRI signals.
A multimode fiber optic cable connecting a BBU and an AAU is 150 m (492.13 ft) long at most.
A multimode fiber optic cable connecting two AAUs is 100 m (328.08 ft) long at most.
A single-mode fiber optic cable consists of a single-mode pigtail and a trunk single-mode fiber
optic cable, which are connected through an optical distribution frame (ODF). A single-mode
pigtail is 20 m (65.62 ft) and 70 m (229.66 ft) long at most on the BBU and AAU sides,
respectively.
When the distance between two AAUs is longer than or equal to 100 m (328. 08 ft), a single-
mode fiber optic cable is used.
NOTE
l The ODF and trunk single-mode fiber optic cable are provided by the customer and must comply with
the ITU-T G.652 standard.
l The ODF is an outdoor transfer box for fiber optic cables, which interconnects the single-mode pigtail
and trunk single-mode fiber optic cable.
l A multimode fiber optic cable and a single-mode fiber optic cable are connected to a multimode optical
module and a single-mode optical module, respectively.

4.6 AISG Multi-Wire Cable
An AISG multi-wire cable connects an RRU and an AAU to transmit control signals from a base
station to an RET antenna. When the RRU is connected to the RET antenna, an AISG multi-
wire cable transmits RS485 signals. The length of an AISG multi-wire cable is 5 m (16.40 ft).
NOTE
l An AAU contains built-in remote control units (RCUs).
l An RCU is a driving motor used for the phase shifter in the RET antenna. It receives control commands
from a base station and runs commands to drive the stepper motor. Using a gear, the stepper motor
drives the adjustable phase shifter in the antenna to change the downtilt of the antenna.

An AU performs the following functions: l Provides AU arrays, RF combination, feed power, phase shift network, and drive system. l Provides built-in remote control units (RCUs) that can control circuits. l Provides the power supply channel and communication ports between an AU and an RU. l Provides ports for AAU mounting kits. l Provides ports for connecting to passive RF modules operating in 2.6 GHz.   • 14. Functional Module Description RU An RU uses the wideband technology and supports ultra wideband of 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz. It can be configured with only the 1800 MHz frequency band, only the 2100 MHz frequency band, or both the 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz frequency bands. An RU performs the following functions: l Receives downlink baseband data from the BBU and sends uplink baseband data to the BBU. l On the RX channel, down-converts RF signals into IF signals, amplifies them, and performs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC). On the TX channel, filters out downlink signals, performs digital-to-analog conversion (DAC), up-converts RF signals to the TX band, combines wideband signals of the 1.8 GHz and 2.1 GHz frequency bands, and performs dead peer detection (DPD). l Multiplexes receive signals and transmits signals on the RF channel. l Provides CPRI ports for CPRI convergence and distribution and a -48 V DC port. l Protects and filters out RF signals. 2.3 Configurations of an AAU This section describes the configuration of an AAU. When each active module is configured with only one frequency band and each passive module is configured with two TX channels and two or four RX channels, TX channels of active modules and passive modules need to be configured on different antenna arrays. RET Function The RCU in the RET system of an AAU receives control signals from the base station and drives the gearing in the AU through the step motor to drive the phase shifter in the AU, thereby adjusting the downtilt of the AU. RET Configuration Principles The RET configuration principles are as follows: l The serial numbers of logical RCUs, which do not have links, can be scanned by any RET ports. l Links have no priority, and apply the first-come first-served principle. Only one AISG link can be established for an RCU serial number. If a link needs to be switched, you must delete the configuration on the link so that the link can be released. l After the RCU link is established, the RCU serial number is not displayed in the scanning result of other RET ports. NOTE l The exteriors of an optical module and the label on an optical module in this section are for reference only. The actual exteriors may be different. l Boards or RF modules supporting only the 1.25 Gbit/s CPRI port rate, for example, the GTMU or RRU3908 V1, cannot use optical modules supporting a 9.8 Gbit/s CPRI port rate.   • 27. 4AAU Cables About This Chapter This chapter describes AAU cables. 4.1 AAU Cable List This section describes the connector types and installation positions of AAU cables, providing reference for cable installation and replacement. 4.2 AAU PGND Cable An AAU PGND cable connects an AAU and an external ground bar for proper grounding of the AAU. The maximum length of an AAU PGND cable is 8 m (26.25 ft). 4.3 AAU Power Cable An AAU power cable feeds external -48 V DC power into an AAU. The maximum length of an AAU power cable between the AAU and its power supply is 100 m (328.08 ft). 4.4 CPRI Fiber Optic Cable CPRI fiber optic cables are classified into multimode fiber optic cables and single-mode fiber optic cables. They transmit CPRI signals. 4.5 Feeder A feeder connects an RRU and an AAU and transmits signals between the base station and the antenna system. 4.6 AISG Multi-Wire Cable An AISG multi-wire cable connects an RRU and an AAU to transmit control signals from a base station to an RET antenna. When the RRU is connected to the RET antenna, an AISG multi- wire cable transmits RS485 signals. The length of an AISG multi-wire cable is 5 m (16.40 ft). 4.7 AISG Extension Cable When the distance between an RRU and an AAU is longer than 5 m (16.4 ft), an AISG multi- wire cable is not long enough to connect the RRU and the AAU. In this case, an AISG extension cable is used to extend the AISG multi-wire cable. An AISG extension cable is 15 m (49.21 ft).   • 30. 4.3 AAU Power Cable An AAU power cable feeds external -48 V DC power into an AAU. The maximum length of an AAU power cable between the AAU and its power supply is 100 m (328.08 ft). NOTE If the power equipment is provided by customers, the 20 A circuit breakers are recommended. Exterior The following figure shows the exterior of an AAU power cable. The connector at one end of an AAU power cable is an EPC5 connector and the connector at the other end depends on the power equipment. They transmit CPRI signals. A multimode fiber optic cable connecting a BBU and an AAU is 150 m (492.13 ft) long at most. A multimode fiber optic cable connecting two AAUs is 100 m (328.08 ft) long at most. A single-mode fiber optic cable consists of a single-mode pigtail and a trunk single-mode fiber optic cable, which are connected through an optical distribution frame (ODF). A single-mode pigtail is 20 m (65.62 ft) and 70 m (229.66 ft) long at most on the BBU and AAU sides, respectively. When the distance between two AAUs is longer than or equal to 100 m (328. 08 ft), a single- mode fiber optic cable is used. NOTE l The ODF and trunk single-mode fiber optic cable are provided by the customer and must comply with the ITU-T G.652 standard. l The ODF is an outdoor transfer box for fiber optic cables, which interconnects the single-mode pigtail and trunk single-mode fiber optic cable. l A multimode fiber optic cable and a single-mode fiber optic cable are connected to a multimode optical module and a single-mode optical module, respectively. Exterior Multimode fiber optic cable: The multimode fiber optic cable has a DLC connector at each end, as shown in the following figure.   • 36. 4.6 AISG Multi-Wire Cable An AISG multi-wire cable connects an RRU and an AAU to transmit control signals from a base station to an RET antenna. When the RRU is connected to the RET antenna, an AISG multi- wire cable transmits RS485 signals. The length of an AISG multi-wire cable is 5 m (16.40 ft). NOTE l An AAU contains built-in remote control units (RCUs). l An RCU is a driving motor used for the phase shifter in the RET antenna. It receives control commands from a base station and runs commands to drive the stepper motor. Using a gear, the stepper motor drives the adjustable phase shifter in the antenna to change the downtilt of the antenna. Exterior The following figure shows the exterior of an AISG multi-wire cable.
