Facing criticism, State Bank of India on Saturday announced that it has de-

bank had earlier come out with revised instructions under which it had said
that a woman who is over three months pregnant will be considered “tempo-

Night curfew will be withdrawn in Karnataka from Monday and schools and

with hospitalisation due to Covid now at 2 per cent and the recovery rate

Today, India mourns the loss of Mahatma Gandhi on his 74th death anniversary.
Every year on January 30, India observes Martyrs’ Day also known as Shaheed Di-
was as the Father of the Nation was assassinated at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House.
Gandhi also referred as Bapu taught the non-violence to the people of the country in
their fight for freedom from colonial British rule. On this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi
was shot by Nathuram Godse during evening prayers.
Union Budget expected to focus
on increase in limits for basic tax
exemption, standard deduction
New Delhi: The Union
Budget is expected to
focus on employment
generation, increase in
limits for basic tax ex-
emption, standard de-
duction, medical ex-
penses, rationalisation
of tax rates and cer-
tain social security in-
vestments.
Currently, Section
16(1A) of the IT Act pro-
vides for a standard de-
duction of Rs 50,000
from the salary income
of a taxpayer. This de-
duction was enhanced
from Rs 40,000 to 50,000
by the Finance Act 2019
and has not been in-
creased since then.
However, considering
the rising inflation and
cost of living, there is a
need to increase such
standard deduction for
the salaried personnel
from Rs 50,000 to Rs
60,000 in case there is no
increase in the basic ex-
emption limit, said
Suresh Surana, Found-
er - RSM India.

80TTA provides deduc-
tion up to Rs 10,000 p.a.

be a better time to set new goals to take
forward relations between the two coun-

Muradnagar:Chief
Minister Yogi Adity-
anath has said that un-
like the BJP
, Samajwa-
di Party, Congress and
BSP did not have devel-
opment as well as safe-
ty and security of peo-
ple on their agenda.
Talking to a select
group of intellectuals
as part of ‘Dialogue
with Influential Voters’
programme to seek
votes for BJP candidate
Ajit Pal Tyagi, CM Yogi
said that all the three
were basically family-
oriented parties in
which only family mat-
tered, while for the BJP
,
the well-being of the 25
crore people of the
state was the top prior-
ity
. “Our family is the
25 crore people of the
state”, he remarked.
Yogi said the these
parties of ‘Chacha-
Bhatija, Bua-Bhatija
and Bhai-Behan’ were
no where to be seen
during the cornoavirus
pandemic and it was
the double engine gov-
ernment of Centre led
by PM Narendra Modi,
the UP Government
and the BJP workers
that were working
around the clock to
save lives and liveli-
hood of people.
Hitting out at the SP
leadership, CM Yogi
said their red caps car-
ried blood stains of
Ram bhakts and inno-
cent people who died in
Muzaffarnagar riots
and people cannot for-
give them.
He added: “Before
2017, the situation was
bad all over Western
UP. There were fre-
quent riots. Traders
and women were un-
safe. They unleashed
chaos and anarchy
when they were in pow-
er, shielding and en-
couraging gangsters
and mafia. There was
no development.”
“Today, we have built
Meerut Expressway
while work is under-
way on a rapid rail pro-
ject between Meerut
and Delhi worth Rs
30,000 crore. And soon,
we will build a world-
class film city near
Ghaziabad also, so that
the cinematic talents
of our state do not have
to migrate to Mumbai
to try their luck”, CM
Yogi said. He further
pointed out that the
double engine govern-
ment of UP has provid-
ed 43 lakh houses to the
poor and free LPG con-
nection to 1.56 crore
families, as well as free
ration and free electric-
ity to crores of needy
people.

‘FARMERS TO GET MONEY WITH INTEREST’
Muzzafarnagar: Un-
ionHomeMinisterAmit
Shah on Saturday as-
sured farmers in Uttar
Pradesh that in the
event of delay in pay-
ment of sugarcanes,
they will get the money
along with interest.
He said this announce-
ment will be part of the
BJP election manifesto.
“We have decided to
announce in the BJP
manifestothatincaseof
delay in clearance of
payments, interest will
be released from sugar
mills, and farmers will
be paid the money along
with interest,” Shah
said while addressing
voters here.
The minister said
farmers in some regions
of the state told him
about the delay in sugar-
cane payment.Target-
ting SP chief Akhilesh
Yadav over the farmers
issue, Shah said there
were 42 sugar mills, of
which 21 mills were
closed by the SP and
BSP.“Whereas during
our time, none was
closed and payments to
farmers were made,” he
asserted. UP tops in pro-
duction of sugarcane
and the western region
of the state is known for
cultivating the crop in
bulk. The opposition
parties have been rais-
ing the issue of non-pay-
ment of cane prices to
farmers while attacking
the ruling BJP in the
state.
Shah took a swipe at
Samajwadi Party chief
Akhilesh Yadav, saying
he does not have
“shame” while talking
“lies” about the law and
order situation in UP-
where the BJP govern-
ment has chased away
criminals and mafias
who flourished during
the earlier regime.
He also scoffed at Ya-
dav and RLD chief Jay-
antChaudhary’sdisplay
of togetherness and
said leaders of these
parties will be seen to-
gether only till election.
He said in the event of
government formation,
people like Azam Khan
and Atiq Ahmad will
take centre stage and
Chaudhary will not be
seen anywhere.
The home minister
also reeled out compara-
tive crime figures under
the present Yogi Adity-
anath-led state govern-
ment and the one head-
ed by Yadav before him,
and dared the SP chief
to come out with the sta-
tistics of his govern-
ance. Alleging that po-

he said, “The victims

thousands of fake cases
were lodged. I congratu-
late the BJP which acted
under party leader San-
jeev Baliyan and fought
the ‘nyay ki ladai’ (fight
for justice) either in
courts or on the roads.”
“I want to ask the people
of Muzaffarnagar and
of western UP if they
have forgotten the riots?
If the same mistake is
done, then those who in-
stigated the riots will sit
on the seat of power in
Lucknow, but if lotus’ is
elected, there will be no
riots,” he said.

Hathras tehsil to file
nomination, said that
he wants to work for the
entire society. For
them, all-around devel-
opment means the de-
velopment of every sec-
tion of society. He also
said that all the prom-
ises made by the BJP to
remove unemployment
have proved to be just
false assurances, so if
they win, then provid-
ing employment to the
youth will be their first
objective to eliminate
unemployment.
Making Hathras dis-

will also be included in
his priorities. Sanjeev
Kaka said that during
this time, he does not
consider anyone as his
opponent in the elec-

with the people, that is
why in Hathras he does

MINNIE MOUSE
DOES NOT DESERVE
THIS CHANGE IN
HER WARDROBE
f humans have a fad
for designer wear,
why should the ador-
able Minnie Mouse
be denied the privi-
lege? One of the most loved ani-
mated characters in the world,
Minnie Mouse, is getting an im-
age makeover, though temporar-
ily
. Her wardrobe will be without
her iconic red polka dot dress as
she will be sporting a designer
pantsuit. She will now be seen in
a “bespoke blue tuxedo with
black polka dots”. The makeover
is to mark the International
Women’s Day and the 30th anni-
versary of Disneyland Paris.
The girlfriend of Mickey
Mouse, Minnie is fun loving,
sweet in nature and very beauti-
ful. She has often been seen los-
ing her cool at Mickey’s forget-
fulness. British designer Stella
McCartney, who has given Min-
nie the new look, likes the fa-
mous Walt Disney character
because “personifies happiness,
self-expression, authenticity…
plus she has such great style”.
Pink or red polka dot dress
matched Minnie’s vivacity. She
doesn’t need the new outfit.
Thankfully, the change is tem-
porary.

The use of NSO-made spy-

including India, to remotely

light in 2021 after an expose
by the Washington Post and
the Paris-based Forbidden

The government has re-

the use of spyware for illegal

will be against national inter-

to silence critics and nearly a
dozen petitions were filed in

committee was ordered in Oc-
tober last year. Those who
suspected that the spyware
was installed in their smart-
phones were to report to the
committee by January 7, 2022.
Chief Justice NV Rama-

each time it raised the issue
of “national security” gave
people hope that the govern-

as it was bought by the “Modi

‘Writing award title after name

Remembering Ahmed Ali: A novelist, Urdu poet, scholar and diplomat
hmed Ali belonged to the gen-
eration of Mulk Raj Anand,
RK Narayan and Raja Rao.
All 4 were born in the first
decade of the 20th century.
Ahmed Ali was a novelist,
Urdu poet, scholar and diplo-
mat. He was born in Delhi in
1910. He had a brilliant aca-
demic career at the Universi-
ties of Aligarh and Lucknow.
In 1932 he published in
Urdu ‘Angarey’. It made him
famous in the Urdu-speaking
world. He taught English for
a brief period at Nanking
University in China. When
the war ended, he naturally
wanted to return to Delhi and
look for a job. In his introduc-
tion to the Rupa edition of his
famous novel, “Twilight in
Delhi”, he narrates the rea-
son why he could not return
to Delhi. “I was prohibited by
the overnight turned Hindu
Indian authorities in 1948 to
come back to India, and for no
other reason than because I
was a Muslim. As the ambas-
sador in China, KPS Menon,
ICS told me, “It is a question
of Hindu and Muslim”, when
I protested he added, “All that
I can do is to write to New

ing will come of it!” (I find
this incredible) demonstrat-
ing a living repetition of his-
tory 90 years after the banish-
ment of my grandparents
and the Muslim citizens from
the vanquished city by the
British…..”
Ironically, initially, the
novel was not welcomed in
Pakistan, because it was
about a “forbidden city”.
Ahmed left for England in
August 1939, carrying the
manuscript of “Twilight in
Delhi”, with him. He showed
it to EM Forster who liked it.
Thenproblemsemerged.Hav-
ing agreed to publish the nov-
el, the Hogarth Press had sec-
ond thoughts. The Second
World War had started. The
printers said they could not
print the book for it being,
“Subversive of law and or-
der”. Ahmed was asked to de-
letethe“subversive”portions.
This he refused to do. Eventu-
ally, Forster’s intervention
prevailed- no changes.
“Twilight in Delhi” was
published in London in 1940 to
much acclaim. Ahmed Ali

mer of 1963. I was living in

that a Muslim friend of Forst-
er should be asked to contrib-
ute to the “Tribute” book. He
suggested the name of Ahmed
Ali. I wrote to Ahmed at his
Karachiaddress.Hisresponse
was prompt and positive.
I did not meet Ahmed Ali
for more than a decade after
the Forster book was pub-
lished. But we corresponded
regularly. We finally met in
London in 1975. We liked
each other.
From 1980 to 1982 I was am-
bassador to Pakistan. I flew
to Karachi to meet Ahmed.
By then he had made up with
the Pakistan Establishment.
President Zia-ul-Haq award-
ed him the Sitara-i-Imtiaz.
Ahmed Ali died in Karachi
on 14th January 1994. The
Government of Pakistan is-
sued a Rs 5 postage stamp in
his honour in January 2005.

New Delhi: It seems
that the central govern-
ment will decide on
changing the law of dep-
utation of All India Ser-

of areferendumbetween

proposal of the central
government and eight
states have supported
the proposal of the gov-

states are reconsidering
their proposal. The Cen-
tral Government wants
toretaintherightof cen-
tral deputation to all the
officers of the All India
Services, including the
IAS. The states are op-
posing it by calling it
against federalism.
In fact, even on this
proposal challenging
the concept of federal-
ism, the states are di-
vided on partisan lines.
The governments of
BJP and its allies are
supporting it and the
governments of opposi-
tion parties are oppos-
ing it. So, naturally the
Congress Governments
of Rajasthan, Chhattis-

opposed it. The govern-

New Delhi: Senior
Congress leader Kapil
Sibal congratulated
Ghulam Nabi Azad for
getting the Padma
Bhushan award, term-
ing him 'bhaijaan' and
even went to the
length of taking a jibe
at Congress stressing
that the country ap-
preciates the contri-
bution of Ghulam
Nabi Azad, but the
Congress does not
need his services.
Think, is Kapil Sibal
so naive that he does
not know that the cen-
tral government has
not given Ghulam
Nabi Azad the Padma
award for any contri-
bution by him. If Pad-
ma awards are given
for such contributions
and social service,
then at least one hun-
dred Congress leaders
will become contend-
ers. Why didn't the
government itself
give Padma Bhushan
to Kapil Sibal for his
contribution? Kapil
Sibal, a capable law-
yer, would know the
real reason why the
government has given
the award to Ghulam
Nabi Azad.
Despite this, if
Sibal took a jibe at the
Congress leadership
using this as an ex-
cuse, then on thing
can be said for sure,
there is deep rooted
meaning behind all
this. It means Sibal
knows the plan ahead
and he is a part of it.
Kapil Sibal gets angry
whenever the leaders
who have written let-
ters to the high com-
mand regarding the
Congress organiza-
tion elections are
called BJP men. But
when the BJP govern-
ment gave Azad the
Padma Bhushan, he
became elated. On the
other hand Jairam
Ramesh and many
other leaders taunted
Azad. On one hand,
there are those who
are targeting Azad
and then on the other
hand are those who
are targeting the Con-
gress high command.
It is thus believed that
in days to come,
this conflict between
the two will increase
and the Congress
leadership should
be prepared for a ma-
jor exodus.
Sibal, his ‘Bhaijaan’ could spark yet another exodus from Congress?

New Delhi: After close
to 60 per cent of the
population in the 15-18
age group have received
the first dose of a Cov-
id-19 vaccine, the pace
of vaccination in this
group has slowed down
considerably
.
In the last one week,
just about 6.25 lakh peo-
ple in this age group
were vaccinated every
day on average, a frac-
tion of the over 40 lakh
per day who got jabbed
during the first week of
this month after vacci-
nation for adolescents
below the age of 18
years was opened up.
So far, more than 4.5
crore individuals in
this age group have re-
ceived their first doses.
India is estimated to
have between 7.5 crore
to 8 crore adolescents in
the 15-18 age group.
The slowing down of
the vaccination is not
entirely unexpected. It
is largely in keeping
with the trends ob-
served for the vaccina-
tion for adults as well.

Focus likely on increasing
limits for tax exemption
New Delhi: The Union
Budget is expected to
focus on employment
generation, increase in
limits for basic tax ex-
emption, standard de-
duction, medical ex-
penses, rationalisation
of tax rates and certain
social security invest-
ments.
Currently, Section
16(1A) of the IT Act pro-
vides for a standard de-
duction of Rs 50,000
from the salary income
of a taxpayer. This de-
duction was enhanced
from Rs 40,000 to 50,000
by the Finance Act 2019
and has not been in-
creased since then.
However, considering
the rising inflation and
cost of living, there is a
need to increase such
standard deduction for
the salaried personnel
from Rs 50,000 to Rs
60,000 in case there is no
increase in the basic ex-
emption limit, said
Suresh Surana, Found-
er - RSM India.
Currently, section
80TTA provides deduc-
tion up to Rs 10,000 p.a.
only with respect to the
interest from savings
bank accounts with
banks/co-operative so-
ciety/post office.
However, for the pur-
pose of enabling major-
ity of taxpayers to avail
this tax benefit, the ex-
isting scope of the said
section needs to be ex-
panded in order to cov-
er other types of inter-
est such as interest on
bank/post office term
deposits, recurring de-
posit etc. Moreover,
such threshold limit of
Rs 10,000 also needs to
be enhanced to Rs 20,000
as there was no change
in the limit since its in-
troduction by Finance
Act 2012, Surana added.
There are numerous
exemptions available
with negligible upper
limits such as Children
Education Allowance
(Rs.100 pm per child),
ChildrenHostelExpend-
iture Allowance (Rs 300
pm per child). —Agencies

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata

said there is a competition
between both the parties to

greater Hindu between Yogi

Both are competing to become a
greater Hindu. If one talks about
a temple, the other talks about
another temple.” Asked about his
alliance, the AIMIM chief said,
“All parties under Bhagidari
Sankalp Morcha decided that
Babu Singh Kushwaha will be
our convenor. If we win, he will
be our Chief Minister for the first
2.5 years and the remaining 2.5
years we will have Dalit Chief
Minister.” Owaisi said there will
be three deputy CMs if Bhagidari
Sankalp Morcha comes to power.
Among the three deputy Chief
Ministers, one will be from the
Muslim community and the
other from backward
communities. Asaduddin Owaisi
said out of the 403 seats, AIMIM
will contest about 100 seats.

and BJP is nervous: Akhilesh
First India Bureau
Lucknow: The Uttar
Pradesh elections will
not throw a surprise re-
sult, Samajwadi Party
chief Akhilesh Yadav
said on Saturday exud-
ing confidence of form-
ing government in the
state and claimed the
“real surprise” will be
in Gujarat assembly
polls due later this year.
He claimed the peo-
ple of Uttar Pradesh
have already given their
verdict and the BJP is
“nervous”. “A wrestler
who loses sometimes
bites or pulls. These
people (BJP) have al-
ready lost,” Yadav said
at a press conference
along with Rashtriya
Lok Dal chief Jayant
Chaudhry, after taking
the ‘anna sankalp’ of
defeating the BJP.
He asserted that the
voters will teach a les-
son to those who are
honouring the killers
of Mahatma Gandhi
and the election results
of Uttar Pradesh will
bring happiness in the
state. “The people of Ut-
tar Pradesh have given
their verdict. No sur-
prise is going to come
here. Farmers, young
traders, people of all
sections have made up
their mind that the gov-
ernment is going to be
formed by those in the
Samajwadi Party alli-
ance,” he said.
“The real surprise
will come from Gujarat
where elections are to
be held after Uttar
Pradesh,” the Samajwa-
di Party chief claimed.
Asked about the gov-
ernment repealing the
three farm laws, Yadav
sought to know why the
BJP “humiliated” the
farmers. “How can the
farmers forget that the
BJP has insulted the an-
nadata (food providers)
of the country?” he
posed. Yadav said, “To-
day I am happy that Jay-
ant Chaudhary ji is
with me and both of us
are together working to
fight for the farmers.”
The voters know that
Chaudhary Charan Sin-
gh Ji fought for the
prosperity of the farm-
ers. All those who are
fighting for the farmers
here have a chance to
save and carry forward
the legacy of Chaud-
hary Charan Singh Ji

Etawah: BJP president
J P Nadda on Saturday
launched a scathing at-
tack on Samajwadi Par-
ty chief Akhilesh Yadav
saying those who never
did any good for the
farmers are moving
around with a handful
of grains making pledg-
es. His apparent target
was Yadav’s ‘ann
sankalp’ (food commit-
ment), the SP’s resolve
for the welfare of the
farmers, a crucial vote
bank in the state.
Akhilesh Yadav has
made several promises
to the farmers of Uttar
Pradesh, including
MSP for every crop, free
irrigation facilities,
payment of arrears to
cane-growers in 15 days,
interest-free loans, and
insurance and pension
if his party-led alliance
comes to power.
At a public rally in
Etawah, Nadda said,
“Those who never did
any good for the farm-
ers are today moving
around with a handful
of grains. Akhilesh Ya-
dav should tell the peo-
ple of Uttar Pradesh
what had done for the
farmers during the
five years of his rule
(2012-2017).”
“Under the leader-
ship of PM Narendra
Modi, the government
of Yogi Adityanath
waived the worth Rs
36,000 crore loans of 86
lakh farmers. Over 10
crore farmers of the
country have got Rs 1.80
lakh crore under the Ki-
san Samman Nidhi, of
which 2.5 crore are from
Uttar Pradesh,” the BJP
national president said.
He asserted that UP
was the number one in
producing sugarcane,
sugar, potato and green
peas.“In five years, our
double engine govern-
ment has given Rs 1.48
lakh crore to sugarcane
farmers, which is more
than the payments
made during the rule of
the SP and BSP. We
have also cleared the
dues accumulated
during the Akhilesh
Yadav government.
“In the governments
of the SP and BSP, 21
sugar mills were shut
down, while in our gov-
ernment, three new
sugarmillswereopened
and there has been an
expansion of some sug-
ar mills,” Nadda said.

TROUBLED TIME
WHY IS VARUN
ASKING SO MUCH
OUTSIDE THE BJP?
Varun Gandhi, who
wants to awaken
the spirit of a new opti-
mistic politics, may have
been dropped by the par-
ty from its list of star
campaigners, but he has
the power to turn the ta-
bles on many seats in
Rohilkhand. Even
though his own party
has sidelined him, TMC,
SP and Congress are
seenwelcominghim.Ini-
tially
,therewerespecula-
tions of him joining
TMC, then it was specu-
lated that he talked with
Rahul and Priyanka
Gandhi, now specula-
tions are rife in the po-
litical circles that Varun
is in constant touch with
SP supremo Akhilesh.
The current BJP leader-
ship may dislike Varun,
but there was a time
when the same Sangh
andBJPaskedhimtomi-
grate to UP
. This was in
2014 when Varun was
busy with reading and
writing and came across
sensational economic
data,inwhichafrighten-
ing fact was hidden. In
this data, 14,800 such
farmer families of UP
were included who were
deeplydebt-ridden;their
financial condition was
so bad that the helpless
head of family could go
to the extent of commit-
tingsuicide.Varunalong
with his team identified
all these families and
went out to meet them.
But top BJP leadership
did not like this idea be-
cause they were seeing a
flurry of challenges for
the leadership in the ex-
perimental and optimis-
tic politics of Varun.
MIST OVER CONG
INTENTIONS
Last week in Con-
gress office in New
Delhi, when the Con-
gress youth manifes-
to for UP was to be
released, Rahul
Gandhi, Priyanka Gan-
dhi, KC Venugopal, Ran-
deep Surjewala and
Aradhana Misra were
seated on the stage, and
leaders like Salman
Khurshid and Pawan
Kumar Bansal were also
sitting the chairs below
the stage. Everyone was
waiting for UP Congress
President Ajay Kumar
Lallu, but he did not
reach and the pro-
gramme started without
him. The reason for his
inability to reach was
said to be the ‘smog’ that
got him stuck as he was
reaching Delhi by road
from Lucknow. General-
ly
, such programmes of
Congress have the pres-
ence of veteran leaders
butthistime,notasingle
member of the G-23, a
factionof theparty’s

was visible in this
program even re-
motely
. With this,
now the face of a
new Congress

leader-
ship of
Rahul

an journo asked a ques-
tion to Rahul and Pri-
yanka about slogan
‘Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti
Hoon’. She asked why
Congress is not fielding
40% women in polls in 4
states other than UP --
Punjab, U’khand, Goa,
and Manipur. Rahul and
Priyanka did not con-
sider it appropriate to
answer the question.
SOREN IS HAPPY

MOVING TO BJP’S
FOLD
Jharkhand CM He-
mant Soren’s joy is
quite visible with RPN
Singh leaving Congress
and joining BJP. RPN
was Congress’s
Jharkhand

the past sev-
eral years
because of
his close-
ness to the
G a n d h i

been
allegations against RPN
in the past that he has
given all the ‘posts’ of
Jharkhand Congress to
his loyalists. Chief Min-
ister and JMM supremo
Hemant Soren felt that
RPN was playing in the
handsof BJPevenwhile
being in Congress.
Sources said that Soren
had directly spoken to
Rahul told him that
RPN wanted to topple
his govt in Jharkhand
under the pressure of
the BJP but Rahul never
took Soren’s complaints
seriously
.WhenAvinash
Pande, who belongs to
Maharashtra, was sent
to Ranchi as the in-
charge of Jharkhand
Congress, Rahul also at-
tached Umang Sindhar,
atriballeaderfromMad-
hya Pradesh, as co-in-
charge with Pande. Ra-
hul has instructed both
these leaders to change
the face of the entire
Jharkhand Congress;
especially people ap-
pointed by RPN should
be removed. Pande has
started working on the
directions.
IS NITISH ANNOYED
WITH RCP?
Nitish Kumar’s spe-
cial friend Rajiv
Ranjan alias Lalan Sin-
gh has issued the first
list of 26 JDU candi-
dates for UP elections.
There are indications
that JDU may field its
candidates in almost all
the seats of UP. While
RCP Singh is the Union
Steel Minister from the
JDU quota in the BJP-
led central govt, JDU-
BJP coalition govt is
also running in Bihar.
Then why is Nitish’s at-
titude so rigid regard-
ing UP? Sources said
that Nitish had en-
trusted RCP
with the task
of finalising
the seat for
J D U ’ s
share in
UP with
the BJP’s central lead-
ership. It is said that
RCP was also in con-
stant touch with Shah,
Nadda and Dharmen-
dra Pradhan but there
was no consensus on
coordination of seats,
or rather, the BJP kept
RCP entangled till end.
WHY ARE
CONGRESSMEN
APPROACHING
LALU?
In Bihar, the MLC
elections are round
the corner. A broad con-
sensus has also been
reached between the
BJP and JDU in the
state regarding the can-
didates. At the same
time, the confusion of
Congress is coming out
openly in Bihar. By go-
ing alone in UP and Goa
elections, the Congress
has in a way declared in
front of its alliance
partners that the party
will fight on its own in
the coming assembly
elections. Rahul Gan-
dhi wants the same for-
mula for Bihar as well.
But the Congress lead-
ers of Bihar
have now
got used
to reach-
ing out to
Nitish or
L a l u .
Now in
the MLC elections, sen-
ior leaders of Congress
are approaching Lalu,
Tejashwi and even
Manoj Jha. Bihar Con-
gress president Madan
Mohan Jha had an-
nounced that the Con-
gress leaders who want
to claim for the post of
MLC should come to the
Congress office and get
a slip of Rs 5,000 cut.
But look at the condi-
tion of Congress in Bi-
har, not a single slip
was cut.
SP BENEFITS FROM
BHIM ARMY
SP chief Akhilesh
Yadav is now feeling
that it was a profitable
deal for him not to forge
an electoral alliance
with Chandrashekhar
Azad’s Bhim Army par-
ty. Earlier, Chan-
drashekhar Azad was
demanding 10 seats
from Akhilesh for his
party, but Akhilesh was
ready to give only two
seats to Bhim Army.
Akhilesh had offered to
bear the election ex-
penses of these two
seats. But the deal did
not work out.

usband says:
“When my wife is
upset, she cries
for a long time. If
we sit down to
talk, she gets
more irritable
and refuses to talk. Noth-
ing works. I just feel like
giving up,” The wife says,
“when my husband came
home, I was crying. I tried
to explain why I was upset,
but he cut me off by saying
it was not that serious.
That made me even more
upset.” Can we relate to
the above experience?
Both want to communi-
cate, but they often get
frustrated.
Men and women com-
municate differently, and
they have unique needs.
Women are inclined to
show empathy, give emo-
tional support and share
their feelings openly and
often. Men are less in-
clined to discuss their feel-
ings. They prefer talking
about problems and facts.
Offering solutions is a
man’s way of showing his
wife that she can rely on
him.
Communication diffi-
culties in marriage are of-
ten because of gender. Men
and women complement
each other physically
, emo-
tionally and mentally.
Along with these differ-
ences are the complexi-
ties of upbringing, and
the moulding done by
the environment and
society’s view of what
is manly and wom-
anly. Because of
these influences, we
see certain pat-
terns in the way
men and women
talk.
The daily chal-
lenge of male-fe-
male communica-
tion is a formidable
one. Many
h u s -
bands say that a simple
question by their wives,
“how do you like my new
hairstyle”, can lead to an
argument.
A wife can make a re-
quest that her husband si-
lently resists for reasons
unknown to her. Thinking
he didn’t hear, she tells
him what to do. His resist-
ance stiffens. This situa-
tion shows two people have
not communicated clearly
.
From a wife’s perspec-
tive, she best expresses her
care when she offers good
advice. In her husband’s
view, she is ordering him
around and implying that
he is incompetent. “Don’t
forget your briefcase!” Is
for her a statement of care.
Whereas it reminds him of
his mother calling out af-
ter him. He may say to him-
self, “don’t run my life!”
A man’s response to a
stressful problem is to seek
a quiet place to think over
it. When a woman has a
problem, she wants to talk
it out with him. What she
wants most is a sympathet-
ic ear that will hear her
feelings about it.
“We have been married
for 25 years,” said one hus-
band.“If shedoesnotknow
what I want by now, she
must not care or is not pay-
ing attention.” Expecting
our partners to be mind
readers is not realistic.
Rather than belittle the
seeming peculiarities of a
partner and cling to one’s
own by saying, “that is the
way I am,” it is best to look
below the surface into each
other’s minds and specific
communication styles.
A woman has a special
need to be repeatedly reas-
sured. An insightful hus-
band takes note of his
wife’s feelings and tries to
adapt his approach accord-
ingly. He reassures her
that her thoughts and feel-
ings are important to him.
A discerning wife tries to
understand his viewpoint
and refrains from repeat-
edly saying, “why don’t
you just ask for direc-
tions,” when her husband
becomes lost while travel-
ling.
Sometimes the stresses
and strains of life leave
couples with less time and
energy for a meaningful
talk. Sharing feelings
builds trust and strength-
ens marriage bonds. Talk-
ing about even minor mat-
ters over a cup of tea or
coffee can keep them con-
nected emotionally
.
One husband said, “It’s
hard for me to really speak
my mind and tell my wife
just exactly the way I feel.”
Tactandasenseof humour
make heart to heart com-
munication easier. Letting
one’s partner know how
one feels can prevent frus-
trationanddisappointment
to accumulate.
Observing how a partner
talks with relatives can
help one understand him/
her better. At times, it is not
what is said but how it is
conveyed that reveals a per-
son’s inner thinking. Also,
much can be learnt from
what is not said.
Aseachpersonisunique,
so is each blend of two indi-
viduals in the marriage. It
is easy to assume that oth-
ers view things the same as
we do. Lack of communica-
tion is the villain that dev-
astates most homes.
One couple married for
20 years says, “We feel we
know each other quite well,
but situations sometimes
erupt that reveal a vast
communication gap which
good intentions alone can-
not bridge.”
Marital arguments may
have different tunes, but
often they are variations on
a few basic themes. Under-
standing one’s partner’s
different perspective helps
reduce these blazing forest
fires to glowing charcoal in
the heart of a happy home.

Union Budget expected to focus on increase in limits for basic tax exemption, standard deduction New Delhi: The Union Budget is expected to focus on employment generation, increase in limits for basic tax ex- emption, standard de- duction, medical ex- penses, rationalisation of tax rates and cer- tain social security in- vestments. Currently, Section 16(1A) of the IT Act pro- vides for a standard de- duction of Rs 50,000 from the salary income of a taxpayer. This de- duction was enhanced from Rs 40,000 to 50,000 by the Finance Act 2019 and has not been in- creased since then. However, considering the rising inflation and cost of living, there is a need to increase such standard deduction for the salaried personnel from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 in case there is no increase in the basic ex- emption limit, said Suresh Surana, Found- er - RSM India. Currently, section 80TTA provides deduc- tion up to Rs 10,000 p.a. only with respect to the interest from savings bank accounts with banks/co-operative so- ciety/post office. First India Bureau Muradnagar:Chief Minister Yogi Adity- anath has said that un- like the BJP , Samajwa- di Party, Congress and BSP did not have devel- opment as well as safe- ty and security of peo- ple on their agenda. Talking to a select group of intellectuals as part of ‘Dialogue with Influential Voters’ programme to seek votes for BJP candidate Ajit Pal Tyagi, CM Yogi said that all the three were basically family- oriented parties in which only family mat- tered, while for the BJP , the well-being of the 25 crore people of the state was the top prior- ity . “Our family is the 25 crore people of the state”, he remarked. Yogi said the these parties of ‘Chacha- Bhatija, Bua-Bhatija and Bhai-Behan’ were no where to be seen during the cornoavirus pandemic and it was the double engine gov- ernment of Centre led by PM Narendra Modi, the UP Government and the BJP workers that were working around the clock to save lives and liveli- hood of people. Hitting out at the SP leadership, CM Yogi said their red caps car- ried blood stains of Ram bhakts and inno- cent people who died in Muzaffarnagar riots and people cannot for- give them. He added: “Before 2017, the situation was bad all over Western UP. There were fre- quent riots. Traders and women were un- safe. There was no development.” “Today, we have built Meerut Expressway while work is under- way on a rapid rail pro- ject between Meerut and Delhi worth Rs 30,000 crore. The opposition parties have been rais- ing the issue of non-pay- ment of cane prices to farmers while attacking the ruling BJP in the state. Shah took a swipe at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, saying he does not have “shame” while talking “lies” about the law and order situation in UP- where the BJP govern- ment has chased away criminals and mafias who flourished during the earlier regime. He also scoffed at Ya- dav and RLD chief Jay- antChaudhary’sdisplay of togetherness and said leaders of these parties will be seen to- gether only till election. He said in the event of government formation, people like Azam Khan and Atiq Ahmad will take centre stage and Chaudhary will not be seen anywhere. The home minister also reeled out compara- tive crime figures under the present Yogi Adity- anath-led state govern- ment and the one head- ed by Yadav before him, and dared the SP chief to come out with the sta- tistics of his govern- ance. Alleging that po- liceactedwithvotebank inmindduringtheriots, he said, “The victims were made accused and accusedthevictims, and thousands of fake cases were lodged. I congratu- late the BJP which acted under party leader San- jeev Baliyan and fought the ‘nyay ki ladai’ (fight for justice) either in courts or on the roads.” “I want to ask the people of Muzaffarnagar and of western UP if they have forgotten the riots? If the same mistake is done, then those who in- stigated the riots will sit on the seat of power in Lucknow, but if lotus’ is elected, there will be no riots,” he said. One of the most loved ani- mated characters in the world, Minnie Mouse, is getting an im- age makeover, though temporar- ily . Her wardrobe will be without her iconic red polka dot dress as she will be sporting a designer pantsuit. She will now be seen in a “bespoke blue tuxedo with black polka dots”. The makeover is to mark the International Women’s Day and the 30th anni- versary of Disneyland Paris. The girlfriend of Mickey Mouse, Minnie is fun loving, sweet in nature and very beauti- ful. She has often been seen los- ing her cool at Mickey’s forget- fulness. British designer Stella McCartney, who has given Min- nie the new look, likes the fa- mous Walt Disney character because “personifies happiness, self-expression, authenticity… plus she has such great style”. Pink or red polka dot dress matched Minnie’s vivacity. She doesn’t need the new outfit. Thankfully, the change is tem- porary. TOP TWEETS I egasus is back on the front burner with a New York Times report claiming that In- dia bought Pegasus spyware for $2 billion as part of a de- fence deal with Israel in 2017. The use of NSO-made spy- ware by several countries, including India, to remotely track smartphones came to light in 2021 after an expose by the Washington Post and the Paris-based Forbidden Stories. In India 10 cases of Pegasus usage to keep an eye on journalists, social activ- ists and others were detected. The government has re- fused to admit that it ordered the use of spyware for illegal surveillance as the disclosure will be against national inter- est. After a hue and cry was raisedoverthespywareusage to silence critics and nearly a dozen petitions were filed in the Supreme Court, an inves- tigation by an Independent committee was ordered in Oc- tober last year. Those who suspected that the spyware was installed in their smart- phones were to report to the committee by January 7, 2022. Chief Justice NV Rama- na’s observation during Pegasus hearing that the state cannot “get a free pass” each time it raised the issue of “national security” gave people hope that the govern- ment would come clean on the issue. The latest revela- tion by the NYT should be found useful by the court- appointed inquiry panel. The newspaper report has given Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi another opportunity to hit out at the government. Rahul Gandhi tweeted that the government’s use of Pegasus amounted to treason as it was bought by the “Modi government to spy on our pri- mary democratic institu- tions”. All 4 were born in the first decade of the 20th century. Ahmed Ali was a novelist, Urdu poet, scholar and diplo- mat. He was born in Delhi in 1910. He had a brilliant aca- demic career at the Universi- ties of Aligarh and Lucknow. In 1932 he published in Urdu ‘Angarey’. It made him famous in the Urdu-speaking world. He taught English for a brief period at Nanking University in China. When the war ended, he naturally wanted to return to Delhi and look for a job. In his introduc- tion to the Rupa edition of his famous novel, “Twilight in Delhi”, he narrates the rea- son why he could not return to Delhi. “I was prohibited by the overnight turned Hindu Indian authorities in 1948 to come back to India, and for no other reason than because I was a Muslim. As the ambas- sador in China, KPS Menon, ICS told me, “It is a question of Hindu and Muslim”, when I protested he added, “All that I can do is to write to New Delhi, but I can tell you noth- ing will come of it!” (I find this incredible) demonstrat- ing a living repetition of his- tory 90 years after the banish- ment of my grandparents and the Muslim citizens from the vanquished city by the British…..” Ironically, initially, the novel was not welcomed in Pakistan, because it was about a “forbidden city”. Ahmed left for England in August 1939, carrying the manuscript of “Twilight in Delhi”, with him. He showed it to EM Forster who liked it. Thenproblemsemerged.Hav- ing agreed to publish the nov- el, the Hogarth Press had sec- ond thoughts. The Second World War had started. The printers said they could not print the book for it being, “Subversive of law and or- der”. Ahmed was asked to de- letethe“subversive”portions. This he refused to do. Eventu- ally, Forster’s intervention prevailed- no changes. “Twilight in Delhi” was published in London in 1940 to much acclaim. Ahmed Ali came into my life in the sum- mer of 1963. I was living in NewYork.Iwaseditingabook of Tributes; a gift to EM For- ster on his 85th birthday , 1.1.1964. Raja Rao said to me that a Muslim friend of Forst- er should be asked to contrib- ute to the “Tribute” book. He suggested the name of Ahmed Ali. I wrote to Ahmed at his Karachiaddress.Hisresponse was prompt and positive. I did not meet Ahmed Ali for more than a decade after the Forster book was pub- lished. But we corresponded regularly. We finally met in London in 1975. We liked each other. From 1980 to 1982 I was am- bassador to Pakistan. I flew to Karachi to meet Ahmed. By then he had made up with the Pakistan Establishment. President Zia-ul-Haq award- ed him the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Ahmed Ali died in Karachi on 14th January 1994. The Government of Pakistan is- sued a Rs 5 postage stamp in his honour in January 2005. So far, nine states have opposed this proposal of the central government and eight states have supported the proposal of the gov- ernment. Two states- Meghalaya and Karna- taka - had earlier op- posedbutnowboththese states are reconsidering their proposal. The Cen- tral Government wants toretaintherightof cen- tral deputation to all the officers of the All India Services, including the IAS. The states are op- posing it by calling it against federalism. In fact, even on this proposal challenging the concept of federal- ism, the states are di- vided on partisan lines. The governments of BJP and its allies are supporting it and the governments of opposi- tion parties are oppos- ing it. So, naturally the Congress Governments of Rajasthan, Chhattis- garh and Punjab have opposed it. The govern- ments of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Jharkhandsupportedby the Congress have also opposed it and the gov- ernments of West Ben- gal, Kerala and Telan- gana are also against it. IAS officers’ Central deputation to be decided by the vote of states! FEDERAL CONFLICT Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal congratulated Ghulam Nabi Azad for getting the Padma Bhushan award, term- ing him 'bhaijaan' and even went to the length of taking a jibe at Congress stressing that the country ap- preciates the contri- bution of Ghulam Nabi Azad, but the Congress does not need his services. Think, is Kapil Sibal so naive that he does not know that the cen- tral government has not given Ghulam Nabi Azad the Padma award for any contri- bution by him. If Pad- ma awards are given for such contributions and social service, then at least one hun- dred Congress leaders will become contend- ers. Why didn't the government itself give Padma Bhushan to Kapil Sibal for his contribution? Kapil Sibal, a capable law- yer, would know the real reason why the government has given the award to Ghulam Nabi Azad. Despite this, if Sibal took a jibe at the Congress leadership using this as an ex- cuse, then on thing can be said for sure, there is deep rooted meaning behind all this. It means Sibal knows the plan ahead and he is a part of it. Kapil Sibal gets angry whenever the leaders who have written let- ters to the high com- mand regarding the Congress organiza- tion elections are called BJP men. But when the BJP govern- ment gave Azad the Padma Bhushan, he became elated. On the other hand Jairam Ramesh and many other leaders taunted Azad. On one hand, there are those who are targeting Azad and then on the other hand are those who are targeting the Con- gress high command. It is thus believed that in days to come, this conflict between the two will increase and the Congress leadership should be prepared for a ma- jor exodus. Sibal, his ‘Bhaijaan’ could spark yet another exodus from Congress? So far, more than 4.5 crore individuals in this age group have re- ceived their first doses. India is estimated to have between 7.5 crore to 8 crore adolescents in the 15-18 age group. The slowing down of the vaccination is not entirely unexpected. It is largely in keeping with the trends ob- served for the vaccina- tion for adults as well. However, for the pur- pose of enabling major- ity of taxpayers to avail this tax benefit, the ex- isting scope of the said section needs to be ex- panded in order to cov- er other types of inter- est such as interest on bank/post office term deposits, recurring de- posit etc. Moreover, such threshold limit of Rs 10,000 also needs to be enhanced to Rs 20,000 as there was no change in the limit since its in- troduction by Finance Act 2012, Surana added. Owaisi said, “It is not about social justice. The fight is on who is a greater Hindu between Yogi Adityanath and Akhilesh Yadav. Both are competing to become a greater Hindu. If one talks about a temple, the other talks about another temple.” Asked about his alliance, the AIMIM chief said, “All parties under Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha decided that Babu Singh Kushwaha will be our convenor. If we win, he will be our Chief Minister for the first 2.5 years and the remaining 2.5 years we will have Dalit Chief Minister.” Owaisi said there will be three deputy CMs if Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha comes to power. Among the three deputy Chief Ministers, one will be from the Muslim community and the other from backward communities. Asaduddin Owaisi said out of the 403 seats, AIMIM will contest about 100 seats. Elections for the 403 Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases starting February 10. The polling in Uttar Pradesh will be held on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, and March 3 and 7. Abdullah, who is contesting from the Suar assembly seat in Rampur on SP’s ticket, expressed apprehension that only the policemen deployed in his security can shoot him. Speaking to reporters, the Samajwadi Party leader said, “.....BJP have officers with them. The police are with BJP, two governments are with BJP. I am alone. I have no one with me. I don’t even trust the policemen who are with me. Police can shoot me...They are not deployed for my security.” Akhilesh Yadav-led SP has fielded Azam Khan, who is sitting MP from Rampur Lok Sabha seat, from Rampur constituency. He claimed the peo- ple of Uttar Pradesh have already given their verdict and the BJP is “nervous”. “A wrestler who loses sometimes bites or pulls. These people (BJP) have al- ready lost,” Yadav said at a press conference along with Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhry, after taking the ‘anna sankalp’ of defeating the BJP. He asserted that the voters will teach a les- son to those who are honouring the killers of Mahatma Gandhi and the election results of Uttar Pradesh will bring happiness in the state. “The people of Ut- tar Pradesh have given their verdict. No sur- prise is going to come here. Farmers, young traders, people of all sections have made up their mind that the gov- ernment is going to be formed by those in the Samajwadi Party alli- ance,” he said. “The real surprise will come from Gujarat where elections are to be held after Uttar Pradesh,” the Samajwa- di Party chief claimed. Asked about the gov- ernment repealing the three farm laws, Yadav sought to know why the BJP “humiliated” the farmers. “How can the farmers forget that the BJP has insulted the an- nadata (food providers) of the country?” he posed. Yadav said, “To- day I am happy that Jay- ant Chaudhary ji is with me and both of us are together working to fight for the farmers.” The voters know that Chaudhary Charan Sin- gh Ji fought for the prosperity of the farm- ers. All those who are fighting for the farmers here have a chance to save and carry forward the legacy of Chaud- hary Charan Singh Ji and this is also an elec- tion for this, the Sama- jwadi Party chief said. First India Bureau Lucknow: With the first phase of assembly elections in the state to be held February 10th, the number of defec- tions has increased with Saturday seeing several leaders of the Samajwadi Party along with those from Bahu- jan Samaj Party join the BJP along with their supporters in the state’s capital of Lucknow. Ranganath Mishra, who was once a Minis- ter of State when the BJP formed govern- ment under Ram- prakash Gupta, a cabi- net minister in Mayawati’s govern- ment and former MLA from Aurai in Bhadohi joined BJP along with his supporters on Sat- urday . On the same day, Manish Rawat, MLA from Sidhauli in Sita- pur on a Samajwadi Party ticket joined BJP after he was not given a ticket by the SP for the upcoming elections. Manish Rawat follow- ing the snub by the Sa- majwadi Party had lev- elled serious allega- tions against SP like distribution of tickets to those who are pro- viding money in re- turn. Shailendra Kishore Pandey alias Madhukar Pandey, a former state spokesper- son of Congress is ex- pected to join the BJP soon as he had recently distanced himself from the Congress and aligned himself with the nationalist stand of the BJP. PEOPLE WILL TEACH BJP A LESSON IN POLLS: AKHILESH YADAV JAYANT CHAUDHARY First India Bureau Lucknow: The BJP says its government has been providing subsidised ration to 80 crore poor people in the country and that is their admis- sion of India’s grow- ing poverty, as con- firmed by surveys worldwide, Samajwa- di Party president Akhilesh Yadav said on Saturday. Yadav made the assertion in a news conference at Vedanta Farm House. He was on a visit to Ghaziabad along with his party’s poll part- ner Rashtriya Lok Dal supremo Jayant Chaudhary in sup- port of their party candidates. Recalling over the year-long farmer protest against the now-re- pealed 3 farm laws, Yadav said farmers kept camping at the Delhi-Ghaziabad bor- der for over a year but the government, in- stead of sympathising with them, kept on putting up barricades and barbed wires on roads and grafting nails on roads to pre- vent them from marching to Delhi. As thousands of migrant workers began re- turning homes on foot amid the sudden Cov- id lockdown of the country in March 2020, said Yadav. First India Bureau Kanpur: At least two people died after a fire broke out at a sweets shop in Kahoo Kothi market of Kanpur city in the early hours of Saturday morning. The fire broke out at 4 am on Saturday in which the entire shop was burnt to ashes. “Two employees of Raj Kishore Sweets-- Shyam Narayan and Sunny were sleeping inside died of suffoca- tion. Another employee Mohit is injured and has been admitted to the hospital,” informed Ramesh Chandra, Fire Officer of Colonelganj Kanpur Nagar. “ The fire spread due to the presence of inflamma- ble items like oil, ghee and dalda in the sweet shop. 10 fire units were in place to douse the flames,” said Chandra. Former BSP min Dr Ranganath Mishra, ex SP MLA Manish Yadav join BJP First India Bureau Lucknow: Rashtriya Samaj Paksha’s state president Chandrapal filed his nomination from Bithoor in Kanpur district on Saturday . Speaking to First In- dia, following his nomi- nation, Chandrapal stated that under the able guidance of the party’s Chief Mahadev Jankar Pal, the party will field its candidates in 100 seats of the state. He added that the party had fought well in the civic elections in Guja- rat, Rajasthan, and Ma- harashtra, and in the same lines, the party is being received well by the public in Uttar Pradesh especially the exploited society, and the people are affected by the policies of the state government. He added that in the up- coming elections, the party will take upon the many issues faced by the public. He further leveled allegations at the already elected rep- resentatives of the said exploited group by call- ing them opportunists who are involved in pol- itics just for their own benefit. Chandrapal said that the party’s agenda involves getting a pension of Rs. 5000 to every voter ID holder while alleging that the promises of the other party’s like providing free laptops, tablets, and electricity bills will somehow be recovered from the public. He added that Rash- triya Samaj Pakhsa has been involved in fight- ing for the interests of the people of the state in the role of strong op- position and the party has been getting the public’s trust and full support. Chandrapal ended the conversation by assuring the public that he is committed to the party the public. First India Bureau Agra: The enthusi- asm among the can- didates for the public relations campaign is increasing. The candidates are en- gaged in wooing the public. Meanwhile, SP’s candidate from Agra’s Northern As- sembly seat, Gyanen- dra Gautam, is also constantly going among the public and trying to get their support by tell- ing them the upcom- ing plans of the SP. During the public relations campaign, Gautam reached out to the public on Sat- urday appealed to support Samajwadi Party to win with a huge majority. Gau- tam said that he is getting the affection and love of the public during the public re- lations campaign. He also said that in the name of develop- ment, the public has not received any- thing except false as- surances under the BJP government, due to which the pub- lic’s trust is com- pletely broken that is why at this time, the biggest challenge for them is to con- vince the public and to gain the public’s trust. Prior to the CBI, in 2019, EOW was investi- gating this scam which had sent former MD AP Mishra, director fi- nance Sudhanshu Trivedi and PK Gupta to jail. This was fol- lowed by several arrests in which agents of the brokerage firm and CAs were also involved. First India Bureau Etawah: BJP president J P Nadda on Saturday launched a scathing at- tack on Samajwadi Par- ty chief Akhilesh Yadav saying those who never did any good for the farmers are moving around with a handful of grains making pledg- es. His apparent target was Yadav’s ‘ann sankalp’ (food commit- ment), the SP’s resolve for the welfare of the farmers, a crucial vote bank in the state. Akhilesh Yadav has made several promises to the farmers of Uttar Pradesh, including MSP for every crop, free irrigation facilities, payment of arrears to cane-growers in 15 days, interest-free loans, and insurance and pension if his party-led alliance comes to power. At a public rally in Etawah, Nadda said, “Those who never did any good for the farm- ers are today moving around with a handful of grains. Akhilesh Ya- dav should tell the peo- ple of Uttar Pradesh what had done for the farmers during the five years of his rule (2012-2017).” “Under the leader- ship of PM Narendra Modi, the government of Yogi Adityanath waived the worth Rs 36,000 crore loans of 86 lakh farmers. Over 10 crore farmers of the country have got Rs 1.80 lakh crore under the Ki- san Samman Nidhi, of which 2.5 crore are from Uttar Pradesh,” the BJP national president said. He asserted that UP was the number one in producing sugarcane, sugar, potato and green peas.“In five years, our double engine govern- ment has given Rs 1.48 lakh crore to sugarcane farmers, which is more than the payments made during the rule of the SP and BSP. We have also cleared the dues accumulated during the Akhilesh Yadav government. “In the governments of the SP and BSP, 21 sugar mills were shut down, while in our gov- ernment, three new sugarmillswereopened and there has been an expansion of some sug- ar mills,” Nadda said. First India Bureau Dehradun: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday released a list of as many as 30 ‘star campaigners’ for the Uttarakhand As- sembly elections. The list includes Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi, BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Ministers Ra- jnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Pralhad Joshi (who is also the election in charge of Uttara- khand), Smriti Irani among others. The list also includes Ut- tarakhand C h i e f Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minis- ter Yogi Adityanath, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, BJP MP Dushyant Kumar Gautam, BJP MLA Madan Kaushik. Moreover, the list also includes names of former Chief Minis- ters of Uttarakhand namely Vijay Bahugu- na, Trivendra Singh Rawat, Tirath Singh Rawat and former Union Education Minister Ra- mesh Pokhriyal Nishank. First India Bureau Lucknow: BSP chief Mayawati on Saturday said in the past 10 years, under the SP and the BJP , there has been “anarchy” and “jungle raj” in UP , and cautionedpeoplenotto fallpreytoanyof their allurements. The previous gov- ernment in the state was that of the SP , which was defeated by the BJP in the 2017 as- sembly polls. The BSP chief also said that her rivals have an “an- ti-peoplecharacterand face, and do double talk”, and these have been again exposed be- fore the UP elections. Assembly polls in the statewillbeheldinsev- en phases beginning nextmonthandresults will be declared on March 10. “They (BSP’s rivals) are not talking about good days by remov- ing problems of liveli- hood, unemployment and inflation, among others, but are seek- ing votes by talking about religion-caste discrimination and hate speech, which is not right at all,” May- awati said in a tweet. She said, “The people of UP have spent a troubled 10 years, first SP and then BJP gov- ernment’s jungle raj, anarchy, arrogance, caste and religious ha- tred. Therefore, it will be better if people do not fall for any of their tempting promises and delusion.” CBI seeks prosecution approval against 3 IAS officers PF SCAM Sanjay Agarawal Alok kumar Aparna U NADDA ATTACKS SP, says they never did anygoodforfarmers BJP national president JP Nadda addressing a gathering in Etawah on Saturday. Modi, Shah among BJP’s star campaigners In past 10 yrs, SP BJP gave anarchy, jungle raj to UP: Maya The people of UP have spent a troubled 10 years, first SP and then BJP government’s jungle raj, anarchy, arrogance, caste and religious hatred. TROUBLED TIME WHY IS VARUN ASKING SO MUCH OUTSIDE THE BJP? Varun Gandhi, who wants to awaken the spirit of a new opti- mistic politics, may have been dropped by the par- ty from its list of star campaigners, but he has the power to turn the ta- bles on many seats in Rohilkhand. Even though his own party has sidelined him, TMC, SP and Congress are seenwelcominghim.Ini- tially ,therewerespecula- tions of him joining TMC, then it was specu- lated that he talked with Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, now specula- tions are rife in the po- litical circles that Varun is in constant touch with SP supremo Akhilesh. The current BJP leader- ship may dislike Varun, but there was a time when the same Sangh andBJPaskedhimtomi- grate to UP . This was in 2014 when Varun was busy with reading and writing and came across sensational economic data,inwhichafrighten- ing fact was hidden. In this data, 14,800 such farmer families of UP were included who were deeplydebt-ridden;their financial condition was so bad that the helpless head of family could go to the extent of commit- tingsuicide.Varunalong with his team identified all these families and went out to meet them. But top BJP leadership did not like this idea be- cause they were seeing a flurry of challenges for the leadership in the ex- perimental and optimis- tic politics of Varun. MIST OVER CONG INTENTIONS Last week in Con- gress office in New Delhi, when the Con- gress youth manifes- to for UP was to be released, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gan- dhi, KC Venugopal, Ran- deep Surjewala and Aradhana Misra were seated on the stage, and leaders like Salman Khurshid and Pawan Kumar Bansal were also sitting the chairs below the stage. Everyone was waiting for UP Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu, but he did not reach and the pro- gramme started without him. The reason for his inability to reach was said to be the ‘smog’ that got him stuck as he was reaching Delhi by road from Lucknow. General- ly , such programmes of Congress have the pres- ence of veteran leaders butthistime, notasingle member of the G-23, a factionof theparty’s disgruntled leaders, was visible in this program even re- motely . With this, now the face of a new Congress under the leader- ship of Rahul isclearlyvisible.Awom- an journo asked a ques- tion to Rahul and Pri- yanka about slogan ‘Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon’. She asked why Congress is not fielding 40% women in polls in 4 states other than UP -- Punjab, U’khand, Goa, and Manipur. Rahul and Priyanka did not con- sider it appropriate to answer the question. SOREN IS HAPPY WITH RPN SINGH MOVING TO BJP’S FOLD Jharkhand CM He- mant Soren’s joy is quite visible with RPN Singh leaving Congress and joining BJP. RPN was Congress’s Jharkhand in charge for the past sev- eral years because of his close- ness to the G a n d h i f a m i l y. T here h av e been allegations against RPN in the past that he has given all the ‘posts’ of Jharkhand Congress to his loyalists. Chief Min- ister and JMM supremo Hemant Soren felt that RPN was playing in the handsof BJPevenwhile being in Congress. Sources said that Soren had directly spoken to Rahul told him that RPN wanted to topple his govt in Jharkhand under the pressure of the BJP but Rahul never took Soren’s complaints seriously .WhenAvinash Pande, who belongs to Maharashtra, was sent to Ranchi as the in- charge of Jharkhand Congress, Rahul also at- tached Umang Sindhar, atriballeaderfromMad- hya Pradesh, as co-in- charge with Pande. Ra- hul has instructed both these leaders to change the face of the entire Jharkhand Congress; especially people ap- pointed by RPN should be removed. Pande has started working on the directions. IS NITISH ANNOYED WITH RCP? Nitish Kumar’s spe- cial friend Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Sin- gh has issued the first list of 26 JDU candi- dates for UP elections. There are indications that JDU may field its candidates in almost all the seats of UP. While RCP Singh is the Union Steel Minister from the JDU quota in the BJP- led central govt, JDU- BJP coalition govt is also running in Bihar. Then why is Nitish’s at- titude so rigid regard- ing UP? Sources said that Nitish had en- trusted RCP with the task of finalising the seat for J D U ’ s share in UP with the BJP’s central lead- ership. It is said that RCP was also in con- stant touch with Shah, Nadda and Dharmen- dra Pradhan but there was no consensus on coordination of seats, or rather, the BJP kept RCP entangled till end. WHY ARE CONGRESSMEN APPROACHING LALU? In Bihar, the MLC elections are round the corner. A broad con- sensus has also been reached between the BJP and JDU in the state regarding the can- didates. At the same time, the confusion of Congress is coming out openly in Bihar. By go- ing alone in UP and Goa elections, the Congress has in a way declared in front of its alliance partners that the party will fight on its own in the coming assembly elections. Rahul Gan- dhi wants the same for- mula for Bihar as well. But the Congress lead- ers of Bihar have now got used to reach- ing out to Nitish or L a l u . Now in the MLC elections, sen- ior leaders of Congress are approaching Lalu, Tejashwi and even Manoj Jha. Bihar Con- gress president Madan Mohan Jha had an- nounced that the Con- gress leaders who want to claim for the post of MLC should come to the Congress office and get a slip of Rs 5,000 cut. But look at the condi- tion of Congress in Bi- har, not a single slip was cut. SP BENEFITS FROM BHIM ARMY SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is now feeling that it was a profitable deal for him not to forge an electoral alliance with Chandrashekhar Azad’s Bhim Army par- ty. Earlier, Chan- drashekhar Azad was demanding 10 seats from Akhilesh for his party, but Akhilesh was ready to give only two seats to Bhim Army. Akhilesh had offered to bear the election ex- penses of these two seats. But the deal did not work out. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva usband says: “When my wife is upset, she cries for a long time. If we sit down to talk, she gets more irritable and refuses to talk. Noth- ing works. I just feel like giving up,” The wife says, “when my husband came home, I was crying. I tried to explain why I was upset, but he cut me off by saying it was not that serious. That made me even more upset.” Can we relate to the above experience? Both want to communi- cate, but they often get frustrated. Men and women com- municate differently, and they have unique needs. Women are inclined to show empathy, give emo- tional support and share their feelings openly and often. Men are less in- clined to discuss their feel- ings. They prefer talking about problems and facts. Offering solutions is a man’s way of showing his wife that she can rely on him. Communication diffi- culties in marriage are of- ten because of gender. Men and women complement each other physically , emo- tionally and mentally. Along with these differ- ences are the complexi- ties of upbringing, and the moulding done by the environment and society’s view of what is manly and wom- anly. Because of these influences, we see certain pat- terns in the way men and women talk. The daily chal- lenge of male-fe- male communica- tion is a formidable one. Many h u s - bands say that a simple question by their wives, “how do you like my new hairstyle”, can lead to an argument. A wife can make a re- quest that her husband si- lently resists for reasons unknown to her. Thinking he didn’t hear, she tells him what to do. His resist- ance stiffens. This situa- tion shows two people have not communicated clearly . From a wife’s perspec- tive, she best expresses her care when she offers good advice. In her husband’s view, she is ordering him around and implying that he is incompetent. “Don’t forget your briefcase!” Is for her a statement of care. Whereas it reminds him of his mother calling out af- ter him. He may say to him- self, “don’t run my life!” A man’s response to a stressful problem is to seek a quiet place to think over it. When a woman has a problem, she wants to talk it out with him. What she wants most is a sympathet- ic ear that will hear her feelings about it. “We have been married for 25 years,” said one hus- band.“If shedoesnotknow what I want by now, she must not care or is not pay- ing attention.” Expecting our partners to be mind readers is not realistic. Rather than belittle the seeming peculiarities of a partner and cling to one’s own by saying, “that is the way I am,” it is best to look below the surface into each other’s minds and specific communication styles. A woman has a special need to be repeatedly reas- sured. An insightful hus- band takes note of his wife’s feelings and tries to adapt his approach accord- ingly. He reassures her that her thoughts and feel- ings are important to him. A discerning wife tries to understand his viewpoint and refrains from repeat- edly saying, “why don’t you just ask for direc- tions,” when her husband becomes lost while travel- ling. Sometimes the stresses and strains of life leave couples with less time and energy for a meaningful talk. Sharing feelings builds trust and strength- ens marriage bonds. Talk- ing about even minor mat- ters over a cup of tea or coffee can keep them con- nected emotionally . One husband said, “It’s hard for me to really speak my mind and tell my wife just exactly the way I feel.” Tactandasenseof humour make heart to heart com- munication easier. Letting one’s partner know how one feels can prevent frus- trationanddisappointment to accumulate. Observing how a partner talks with relatives can help one understand him/ her better. At times, it is not what is said but how it is conveyed that reveals a per- son’s inner thinking. Also, much can be learnt from what is not said. Aseachpersonisunique, so is each blend of two indi- viduals in the marriage. It is easy to assume that oth- ers view things the same as we do. Lack of communica- tion is the villain that dev- astates most homes. One couple married for 20 years says, “We feel we know each other quite well, but situations sometimes erupt that reveal a vast communication gap which good intentions alone can- not bridge.” Marital arguments may have different tunes, but often they are variations on a few basic themes. Under- standing one’s partner’s different perspective helps reduce these blazing forest fires to glowing charcoal in the heart of a happy home.
