Jaipur: The desert

aviation sector that has
been badly affected due
to the ongoing corona
pandemic.
A key enabler of
many other economic
activities, the aviation
sector can witness ex-

challenges are ad-

cal will in the right
spirit. At present, the
state lags behind the
neighbouring state of
Gujarat in the sector.
Apart from the corona
pandemic and econom-
ic slowdown, political
will is the key factor
that is lacking in the
state. The corona
pandemic and
c o n t a i n m e n t
measures led to a dras-
tic fall in the number of
air passengers, lead-
ing to a decline in the
number of flights and
cities connected with
air services. In Decem-
ber 2018, 72 flights were
operating daily from
Jaipur and currently,
the number of flights is
only 32.

pacity to operate 100
flights daily while

also operate 40 flights

. At the same time,

RAJ REDUCES TESTING BY 45% IN JULY
Jaipur: At a time when
increasing cases of co-
rona positive in North
East states and Kerala
have alarmed experts,
reduction in corona
testing in Rajasthan
has raised concerns.
The state reduced
tests by 45% in July
as compared to May.
However, the medical
and health department
officials claim that the
tests have not been
reduced but people are
not coming forward to
get themselves tested.
The department has
now removed the
testing team from
many places.
A PACKED FESTIVAL CALENDAR
The Union Secretary in his letter
said that this month, Muharram is
on August 19, Onam on August 21,
Janmashtami on August 30, Ganesh
Chaturthi on September 10, and
Navratri from October 5 to 15 and
these festivals will attract more crowds
which can bring the third wave of co-
rona and prove to be a super spreader.
For this, the state government should
take some concrete steps. He has in-
structed state government to increase
testing and do contact tracing of the
newly infected people properly.
In a letter, Union Health Secy urged states to actively consider
imposition of local restrictions in view of possible 3rd wave of Covid

. But that was
not to be. In a letter Kishor is
understood to have said that he
was resigning because he want-

Is that the real reason for
Kishor to resign from his post,
which he agreed to join in
March, or is the central leader-
ship of the Congress behind the
move. The latter is a more plau-
sible reason as the party seems
disinclined to fully back the
Punjab CM. Kishor is playing a
role in stitching together an op-
position alliance at the national
level. He is not seen in the front
stage, but must surely be active
in the back stage.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING:
A HARD SKILL OR SOFT?
n a velociously and dynami-
cally changing world, we ex-
perience a multilingual envi-
ronment. As the world is
ushering progressively into a
compact global village, the
access to other languages is
not only plain sailing but also
a potential competence that
is in massive demand in the
international job market.
With a bountiful number
of students, aiming to attain
higher education in a foreign
country, in a continent like
Europe (as the universities
in Europe rate high in quali-
ty education, with a low
budget), learning a European
language becomes the entry
ticket to a dream job. Gone
are the days when just learn-
ing English used to be suffi-
cient to travel the world and
gain hands-on experience.
With more and more univer-
sities of Europe giving easy
access to their campuses, the
popularity graph reveals the
higher inclination. Many Eu-
ropean countries offer free
higher education with mini-
mummembershipfeeswhich
looks extremely lucrative
and fascinating to Indian stu-
dents. However, the condi-
tion is to learn the core sub-
jects in the language of that
European country as the me-
dium of instruction is the na-
tive language. That leads,
generates and surfaces the
real debate: when learning a
foreign language gives you
access to many closed doors,
is it a soft skill or a real hard
competency?
The orientation shows
many such students perma-
nently settling abroad due to
their pie in the sky job and
often they carry their job in
the language of that country
.
Therefore, learning a foreign
language is a mixed bag. It’s
not only your survival kit to
theforeignjobmarketbutalso
it is the channel which you
must cross to reach the other
shores. Although for a coun-
try like India, multilingual
learning is not a non-native
concept and many of us grow
up learning the neighbours’
accents and syllables.
The urgency of the hour is
to learn a foreign language. It
is not just a diminutive trick
to initiate a small talk in a get-
together, rather it introduces
us to the other perspective of
accepting the change and em-
bracing it with an open heart
which makes it truly remark-
able and outstanding among
other skills in demand. It is
today a life skill. Foreign lan-
guage study is all about learn-
ing how to truly communi-
cate and connect with others.
One cannot escape it nowa-
days, as learning a foreign
language can improve your
employment prospects. More
companies than ever before
are doing business in several
different countries around
the world, but they can’t do it
without hiring people who
have a grasp of at least one
foreign language.
Apart from all these practi-
cal and easy to go benefits,
there are far-reaching impli-
cations of learning any for-
eign language. It opens the
horizons of an entirely new
understanding of one’s own
culture which often we miss
in absence of differences.
Linguistic diversity begins
nowadays as early as school
years which provides a sub-
stantial foundation to the
current context. It is certain-
ly an early chance to sharpen
the skills so that you are not
edged but at the same time
the continuity of learning
should be unhampered as
this skill is in demand more
than any other when it comes
to higher education in pres-
tigious universities or crack-
ing and sustaining that job
chance. This is a phenomenal
change which the current
generation is witnessing for
sustainability
. It is as critical
as acquiring your engineer-
ing and management de-
grees; therefore, it would be
apt to compare the learning
of a foreign language as a
hard skill that has become a
must-have in one’s resume.
People who can speak multi-
lingually are potential man-
agers, as the management
consider them a valuable as-
set to be able to connect with
a broader range of people. It
is better to know how to com-
municate with the foreign cli-
ent such as German, Russian,
or Japanese as the cultural
identities are an integral part
of these languages which if
left unaddressed can lead to
very unpredictable and con-
flicting deals in businesses
but if learned, can pave and
fill in the gap and generate
the credibility and trust.
Many culturally conflict-
ing situations can be avoided
on a global table during the
project meetings which deal
with an international team.
If you understand the lan-
guage of the team members
it also enriches your under-
standing of the given cultur-
al context. Discerning a for-
eign language is the core of
communication as it facili-
tates a better understanding
of conversations, negotia-
tions, and dialogues which
again frames the core of the
economic spectrum.

marked the triumph of

said PM Modi.
Two years ago on
this day
, Article 370 was
abrogated in Jammu
and Kashmir. On this
day last year, the first
step was taken towards
the construction of the
Ram Temple in Ayod-

, construction
of a grand Ram Temple
is underway, PM Modi
said. The Prime Minis-

The Centre had abro-
gated Article 370 that
gave special status to

The PM said since the
abrogation of Article
370, there has been un-

progress in Jammu and
Kashmir.
Meanwhile, hitting
out at Opposition, Modi
said that Uttar Pradesh
has been seen through

that people were feeling
confident over the last
few years that the state
can be the powerhouse
of India’s growth en-

Jaipur: Even before
the ‘dream’ of united
alliance of opposition
parties has become a
reality, trouble seeoms
to be brewing for the
‘Mahagathbandhan 2.0’
as every leader is try-
ing their best to become
the undisputed ‘king’
of the alliance.
With Mamata Baner-
jee taking large strides
in this regard and other
regional players like
Sharad Pawar also wak-
ing up to the possibility,
even Congress has
jumped in the foray
with its former Presi-
dent Rahul Gandhi also
playing the fiddle.
In fact, it is Sharad
Pawar and Mamta Ba-
nerjee’s activism that
hasmadeCongresslead-
ers havesleeplessnights
as they are worried that
since Rahul Gandhiand
Congress have been
fighting the battle of the
opposition for the last
seven years, now when
the atmosphere of oppo-
sition politics has start-
ed to build in the coun-
try, other leaders are
coming forward. And it
is the fear of being red-
cued to being just a par-
ty and not the ‘big broth-
er’ of politics, that is
worrying Congress.
At present, other op-
position parties are be-
ing discussed more than
Congress. The leaders
of the DMK, an ally of
the Congress, dominate
both the houses of the
Parliament, while the
Trinamool Congress
leaders are discussed
more inside and outside
the house.
For example, there is
RJD’s Manoj Jha, who
is emerging as a leader
in the House, because
of his fiery speeches,
while Sanjay Raut’s
statements on BJP are
yet another hint at the
changing dynamics of
party politics. That is
why the Congress lead-
ers are trying to some-
how completely occupy
the space of the opposi-
tion. In the monsoon
session of Parliament,
Rahul has held three
meetings with the oppo-
sition leaders and
chalked out the strategy
of the House. However,
in the name of strategy,
it is merely that the op-
position has to create a
ruckus and the Parlia-
ment should not be al-
lowed to function. But
for this, once Rahul
held a meeting with 14
parties in Mallikarjun
Kharge’s office and on
another day, he called
the opposition leaders
to the Constitution Club
for breakfast.
After Mamata Baner-
jee gave the initial push
to the opposition parties
by camping in Delhi for
five days, Congress lead-
ers woke up and activat-
edRahul.Rahulhimself
is now taking interest in
politics and devoting
more time in the House
while mingling with the
opposition leaders in-
side theHouse.
But the million dollar
question is, what is Ra-
hul plan after the Parlia-
ment session is over on
August 13? What then?
Will he travel to the
states to meet the oppo-
sition leaders, which
Mamata Banerjee is al-
ready preparing to do?
All things said and
done, Congress’ place in
opposition politics will
be decided by the politi-
cal developments over
the next six months and
the results of the as-
sembly elections in five
states after that.

Mixing matching

New Delhi: Mixing of
COVID-19 vaccines
should be done with
the ones available in
India, Dr Gagandeep
Kang, Christian Medi-
cal College, Vellore’s
professor, and top mi-
crobiologist and vi-

Thursday adding that
it will help to over-

shortage.
Speaking to ANI, Dr
Kang said, “There are
many studies being
done around the world

mRNA vaccines show
that our immune sys-
tem becomes better if
you mix vaccines. So
that’s good for us to

pens with the vac-

Notably, there are
many countries that
are doing research on
the mixing and match-

New Delhi: The government is considering narrowing

Jaipur: Is the most ac-

being ‘culled’? Is some
‘invisible force’ trying
to cut down the feath-
ers of the Anti Evasion
Wing of the SGST? If
sources are to be be-
lieved, preparations
are being made to sub-
stantially lower the
number of these teams
down from 20 after the
Departmental Re-or-
ganisation Committee
has made certain rec-
ommendations to this
effect.
If the plan is execut-
ed, then instead of 20,
there will only be 6
Anti Evasion teams,
however, even before
any move could be
made, knowledgeable
sources reveal, that
this has ensued a great
tussle within the de-
partment as officials
of the department are
protesting against any
such recommendation
claiming that the re-
organisation commit-
tee has not taken feed-
back from officials
and hence, there is
discontent among the
officials.
Interestingly, a
whatsapp group of of-
ficials has become the
‘ground zero’ for the
protest. It is believed
that even with 20
teams, the GST Theft
has not gone down
substantially, and
when the number is
reduced to merely 6, it
will cause a ‘rupture’.
Notably, there is al-
ready a demand to
open more branches in
all 33 districts of the
state, but ‘forces’ are
mulling on lowering
the numbers.
Therefore, it now re-
mains to be seen if
ACS, Finance Akhil
Arora will intervene
in the matter and let
good sense prevail on
departmental officials.

POSTAL REG NO. JPC/010/2019-21
Rajendra Chhabra
Jaipur: IAS Siddharth
Mahajan’s dream of
going to Delhi on depu-
tation has been shat-
tered and he will not be
heading to the office of
Lok Sabha Speaker as
OSD. For the foreseea-
ble future, Mahajan
will continue giving
his services as Secre-
tary, Medical and
Health Department at
Secretariat, Jaipur.
The story behind Ma-
hajan’s Delhi deputation
is extremely interesting
and one of a kind. In De-
cember 2019, when he
was serving as Secretary
,
Food and Civil Supplies,
out of the blue, he re-
ceived a call to become
the OSD to Lok Sabha
Speaker. This led the bu-
reaucracy wonder why
Mahajan, a 2003 batch
IAS and native of Delhi,
was picked up by Om
Birla to be his OSD and
no one could understand
the connection then. Ma-
hajan was happy that
nowhewillbeabletostay

But when the file was
forwarded to CMO for a
NOC, it got stalled there
and could not move even
after a year and even
Birla’s attempt didn’t
bear fruit. But then sud-
denly in November 2020,
the state government
gave him the permis-
sion, along with his IFS
wife - Akansha - to head
to Delhi. Along with this
in December 2020, the
state government ap-
pointed him Secretary,
Medical Department
and it was a bizzare and
surprising decision
since on one hand, he
was given the responsi-
bility and just a few days
beforehehadbeengiven
NOC to head to Delhi.
While assuming the
charge and preparing
for the new responsibil-
ity, Mahajan also start-
ed preparing for his
Delhi deputation, but
the conspiracy of cir-
cumstances was such
that even though he re-
ceived a good news from
Delhi, it soon turned
into bane.
In March 2021, Ma-
hajan was empanelled
for the post of Joint Sec-
retary in Delhi but due
to this, the job of OSD to
Lok Sabha Speaker be-
came distance, since a
senior officer cannot be
posted as OSD, which is
considered to be a jun-
ior posting.
Although the Speak-
er’s office forwarded
the file to Central DoPT
for special considera-
tion, however, few days
back ta final ‘NO’ was
accorded to the request.
Therefore, now if the
Central Government
calls Mahajan for a
Joint Secretary level
post, only then can he
can head to Delhi and
this will take time.
It is worth noting that
while all this was hap-
pening, Mahajan has
been handling his re-
sponsibility as Medical
Secretary in an excellent
mannerforthepasteight
months. He has worked
tirelessly in the current
Covid crisis and the
work that was handled
by senior officials of the
rank of ACS and Princi-
pal Secretary during the
first wave of Covid, Ma-
hajan has been handling
the same successfully
and presented a fitting
example of his abilities.
Therefore, there also ap-
pears no reason for his
transfer too.

Code of conduct raises

...as Gehlot sets eyes on winning panchayat polls 2.0!

Jaipur: Now that the
begul for Panchayati
Raj elections in 6 dis-
tricts have been sound-
ed for which votes will
be cast on 26,29 August
and September 1 and
the future of 1564 Pan-
chayat Samiti members
and 200 Zila Parishad
members from Bharat-
pur, Dausa, Jaipur,
Jodhpur, Sawai Mad-
hopur and Sirohi dis-
tricts and as a result of
which the code of con-
duct has come into ef-
fect; there are serious
questions being raised
on the cabinet rejig.
There is a worry
wherein it is being spec-
ulated if the code of
conduct will stall the
cabinet rejig exercise
since, normally, such a
development does not
occur when code on
conduct is in force.
However there is no le-
gal binding on not to
carry out the rejig at
such time and oath tak-
ing ceremony can be
held during code of con-
duct too.
Even though every-
thing depends on CM
Gehlot, yet those who
are hoping for being ac-
corded a ministerial
berth, are now 'sweat-
ing profusely'!
Meanwhile, on
Thursday evening, Ge-
hlot held a brainstorm-
ing session for the by-
polls wherein he inter-
acted for one and a half
hours with ministers
and Congress leaders
while also mulling on
the right candidates.
Govind Singh Dotasra,
Pratap Singh Khachari-
yawas, Arjun Lal Bama-
nia, Ashok Chandna,
MLA Mahendrajeet
Singh Malviya, Dinesh
Khodnia, and Congress
leader Dharmendra
Rathore, Pukhraj Par-
ashar among others
were present in the
meeting.
It has been decided
that Congress leaders
will head in both the as-
sembly constituencies
on August 12-13 and
hold meetings with par-
ty worker as campaign-
ing will start from Au-
gust 12.
Raj BJP MPs feedback mission with Nadda
BACKTOSQUAREONE!ITSMADAMVASUNDHARAALLTHEWAY..!
Aditi Nagar
New Delhi: One line
message of Rajasthan
BJP MPs feedback con-
clave with party presi-
dent JP Nadda is that
whether you like it or
not, you can't ignore or
write off a towering
Vasundhara Raje. When
the former lady CM en-
tered the conclave being
held at Western Court
Hotel, all eyes were fo-
cussed on her only.
When Madam was talk-
ing to media persons,
everyone present there,
including Arun Singh,
Satish Poonia, Rajendra
Rathore and so on were
just curiously watching
Raje's morale and body
language, which was
full of confidence.
In fact, after a long
time, Madam was visi-
ble at a party platform
which gave a powerful
message to all and sun-
dry that Saffron party in
Rajasthan now stands
completely united to
face the challenge of
2023 Assembly polls. An-
other message of this
conclave was that no
one, so far, has been in-
dicated or nominated as
the chief ministerial
face for 2023 and it is
only Narendra Modi,
Amit Shah, JP Nadda
and to some extent Mo-
han Bhagwat who will
take a final call on this
issue, mostly after poll
results are declared.
Meanwhile, even with
a little over two years
still remaining, Nadda,
while addressing the
MPs and leaders, indi-
rectly hinted at initiat-
ing preparation to boost
the organisation. Sourc-
es reveal that Nadda has
asked leaders to hold
division wise and dis-
trict wise meetings
which even the MPs will
hold. Reactivating the
booth committees, prop-
er use of MPLAD funds
and to be specially forth-
coming towards panna
paramukhs and booth
committees along with
formulating a 'sashakt
mandal abhiyan' were
some of the directions
given by Nadda in the
meeting. Interestingly,
BJP is yet again focus-
sing on its Booths and
Panna Pramukhs as a
way to victory
.
Later Nadda termed
the conclave as a routine
meeting, which is called
at regular intervals to
take feedback, specially
when Parliament is in
session. However, the
meeting was important
with regards to the po-
litical situation in Ra-
jasthan as government
is facing its own crisis
while there were mur-
murs of internal strife
within BJP too. It seems
that at least for now, the
internal tussle has come
to a halt.
Nadda lauded work
done by party and MPs
during Corona crisis.
State chief Satish Poo-
nia said, We will work
in unison like we have
been doing till now. It
is Cong govt that is a
failure in state. Nota-
bly, state incharge
Arun Singh could come
on a tour from August
7 onwards.

Yogesh Sharma
Jaipur: Lord Ram is
again set to become a
'poll- issue' in the upcom-
ingbypollsontwoassem-
bly seats in Rajasthan,
wherein, the Leader of
Opposition Gulabchand
Kataria stoked a contro-
versy ahead of the by-
polls, inviting a sharp
reaction from the ruling
Congress, which has ac-
cused Kataria of insult-
ing Lord Ram.
Accusing the BJP of
doing politics in the
name of religion, Lord
Ram and Ram temple,
PCC Chief Govind Sin-
gh Dotasra and Trans-
port Minister Pratap
Singh Khachariyawas
on Thursday, sought
apology from Kataria
for his statements re-
garding Lord Ram.
“BJP and RSS are not
concerned withdevelop-
ment issues, they only
believe in doing politics
by dividing people on
thebasisof religion,”he
said. “BJP is not spend-
ing even a single penny
in the construction of
Ramtemple,theyaredo-
ing business in dona-
tions,” he said.
Khachariyawas said
that BJP came to power
in the centre by taking
the name of Lord Sri
Ram and spreading lies.
“Gulabchand Kataria
said that if BJP hadn't
been there, Sri Ram
would have been in the
sea. He has insulted the
faith of crores of devo-
tees and he should apol-
ogise,” he told reporters
after attending coordi-

ONLY CONGRESS
DEFEATS CONG:
CHANDNA
Jaipur: Now ministers
are also accepting the
talk of ongoing tussle in
Congress. Sports Minister
Ashok Chandna has
also acknowledged the
loss due to factionalism
during elections. Talk-
ing to media before the
preparatory meeting for
the by-elections at State
Congress Headquarters,
he said that Congress
fought unitedly in three
by-polls because of which
the party won. There is a
saying that only Congress
defeats Congress, but
in the last by-election,
everyone stood united
and won. Congress will
also win Vallabhnagar
Dhariyavad seats in this
way, Chandna said add-
ing that the kind of unity
that was seen in the last
by-polls, the same unity
will be seen in both the
by-elections now. The
result of our solidarity
was that in the last by-
election, BJP came down
from a margin of 50,000
to 4,000 in Rajsamand
seat, this is their defeat.
This time also everyone
is excited, everyone will
fight together, he said.
RULING PARTY WILL WIN
BOTH SEATS: DOTASRA
Jaipur: GS Dotasra said that there is
resentment among people against BJP
over the rising inflation and fuel prices.
“The Modi government has failed to
control inflation could not provide
relief in fuel prices due to which there is
anger and resentment among people.
People gave full mandate to BJP in Lok
Sabha elections in 2019 in the state and
the BJP won all seats but not a single
BJP MP raised voice for the people of
Rajasthan,” Dotasra said. After chairing
a meeting of coordination committees
for both the constituencies, he said that
the ruling party will win both the seats.
RAGHUVEER MEENA
SKIPS PCC MEETING
Jaipur: Raghuveer Meena,
a member of party’s highest
decision-making body Congress
Working Committee (CWC), could
not participate in first meeting
of committee formed by Con-
gress to oversee preparations
for by-elections in Dhariyawad
Vallabhnagar. CWC protocol is
said to be the reason behind his
absence. He has been placed third
in election preparation committee
list putting his name below those
holding posts lower than him.
JP Nadda chaired a meeting of BJP MPs at New Delhi, wherein, Arun Singh, Vasundhara Raje,
Bhupender Yadav, Satish Poonia and Bharti Ben Shiyal were present.

n a world full of beauti-
ful faces, it takes more
than grit and persever-
ance to last in the glitzy
industry of fashion and
modelling.
The glamorous out-
fits and gorgeous makeup isn’t
worth a dime if there isn’t a con-
fident model to strut it on the
ramp. And that is what Jahnvi
Shukla, a fashion model from
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, does
every day
.
On being asked about how she
took up modelling at such a
young age, Jahnvi said, “My
journey as a model was very un-
planned and unpredictable in a
good way. I just wanted to do
something productive in the
time of the pandemic and took
my friends and family’s sugges-
tion to try my luck in modelling,
since I am tall and have always
been confident in front of the
camera. That’s how I started
shooting for local brands in Luc-
know and later ended up work-
ing with very authentic and in-
famous brands in the city
.”
She talked about her inspira-
tion and said, “I met actor Ali
Fazal who also hails from Luc-
know and had a chat with him
duringashoot.Heencouragedme
to pursue modelling and it was
the validation I was looking for.”
But navigating the modelling
path is a bumpy road but Jahn-
vi tackles it with grace every
day
. She talked about the
struggles in the in-
dustry and said, “Models are
truly underpaid, the kind of ef-
forts, commitment and straight
shoots for 12-13 hours re-
quire is a lot. In cities
like Lucknow,
where both
small busi-
nesses
and big clothing
brands are bloom-
ing, it feels only
right that models
are paid enough
and not suckered
in the pits of bar-
ter collaboration.”
She added, “The
industry is fascinat-
ing and attractive but it
shouldn’t be your only
reason to pursue it. Pur-
sue it because of pas-
sion and rise above the
superficial standards
of beauty and be
comfortable in
your skin.”

hat makes the Bea-
tles, the Beatles, is
evident. They are
eternal — a band
like no other in his-
tory
. They kicked
off theirfascinating
saga soon after they launched
theirdebut singleand runaway
hit, “Love Me Do,” sixty years
ago. They influenced every-
thing — including the post-war
baby-boom generation in Brit-
ain, the US, and across the
globe. Their fame, at one time,
predictably exceeded not just
thecharismaof Presidents,but
also Jesus Christ.
Though the ‘Fab Four’ —
John Lennon, Paul McCart-
ney, George Harrison, and
Ringo Starr — that made the
group were originally famous
for light pop music, their
transcendent dexterity
achieved a mix of critical and
literary acclaim that no one
has been able to match. Most
importantly, thanks to their
amazing popularity, the Bea-
tles became more than record-
ing artists; they branched out
into films. Not only that. Len-
non espoused political activ-
ism, not just the comfort of
drugs, which the Beatles were
once dubiously renowned for.
They were, for sure, the most
successful music group in his-
tory; their global sales being a
whopping 1.6 billion records.
When McCartney, prince
charming-to-be of the group,
met Lennon at a party in the
late 1950s, the first seeds of the
Beatlesmusicweresown.Afew
yearslater,itblossomedtomes-
merise fans all over the world.
Credit ought to go to producer
George Martin too who played
a pivotal role in the band’s suc-
cess.Hetappedthelatentpoten-
tial in the group; he recognised
and nurtured it without in-
fringing upon the Beatles natu-
ral musical chemistry
.
There’s a bit of the odd too
with the band. When the Bea-
tles soared with their songs,
they provided fulsome grist
for middle-class daydreams,
eventhoughLennondebunked
the 1960s. He also resented
“performing for the f***ing
idiots who don’t know any-
thing about music.” Lennon,
of course, never suppressed
his class-consciousness. Yet,
when it came to winning, the
Beatles emerged trumps al-
ways. They won the MBE too,
despite protests from previous
recipients who called the hon-
our “vulgar and horrendous.”
Some critics believe that the
Beatles original genius was
Lennon with McCartney being
the charming performer with
a gift for melodies — pleasant
and sound. Over to Paul him-
self: “We were good to each
other. John and I are the only
two people in the world who
were Lennon and McCartney
.”
Right, but the fact remains
that McCartney — Sir Paul —
has relied too much on past
glory, although what makes
him a true knight in musical
armour is his powerhouse of
a voice and sublime finesse.
He’s without a peer.
Picture this. Psychedelic
drugs, sex, and their once-
much-vaunted and much-
soured tryst — because some-
one played a crooked game
— with Maharshi Mahesh
Yogi, the famed Indian guru,
which was later normalised,
were all part of the Beatles
catalogue. Yet, what remains
on solid ground is the band’s
timeless magnetic charm.
The Beatles produced a myri-
ad number of mind-blowing
tunes and numbers.
If songs like “Yesterday”
and “I Want to Hold Your
Hand,” or “Hey Jude,” cham-
pion a sublime goal, a moving
image, there are several other
compositions that conjure up
visions of a new utopia, a suc-
cinct summation. In Lennon’s
words: “Nothing is real/And,
nothing to get hung about.”
That the ‘Fab Four’ could not,
quite unbelievably
, read music
made no difference to their
creative genius and instinctive
feel for words. Take “Sgt Pep-
per,” for instance. The exqui-
site number is an epochal ex-
ecution — the resolution of
rock into a work of art. It was
placed as the greatest album
among “500 Greatest Albums
of All Time” by “Rolling
Stones” magazine. Or, take an-
other example — McCartney’s
“Penny Lane,” which brings
home the lost world of child-
hood. Or, think of Harrison’s
dazzling virtuosity in “While
My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Yes,
a host of the Beatles numbers
convey sweet hopelessness;
some produce a groan from the
heart full of hope. Some others
have anguish, absurdity, mel-
ancholy, and a sense of some-
thing new — the realities and
redemptions in our lives.
The Beatles had their own
stamp commissioned — a trib-
ute to one of their all-time
great hits, “Yellow Subma-
rine.” The most interesting
part — the Beatles music is
delicately laced with Oriental
influences, owing primarily to
sitar wizard Pandit Ravi
Shankar and Harrison’s
friendship and their shared
excursions in the genre. The
best part — the Beatles ageless
numbers imperishable, as
they are, reach the pinnacle of
musical glory from simple
‘folk’ tunes to blissful orches-
tral heights of a masterpiece.
If this isn’t the true quintes-
sence of music as the highest
philosophy, for yesterday, to-
day, and tomorrow, what is?
