Entry slip: What does “internal respiration” occur
between?

Lesson 2.2- Identify major structures and function
        of the human respiratory system
   (pp335-337) of Biology-McGraw-Hill Ryerson)
    I. Upper Respiratory Tract-
        a. Nasal cavity: filters air from dust/ warms
             and moistens air
b.Pharynx: connects nasal cavity to trachea
        c. Epiglottis: prevents food from entering
           trachea
        d.Larynx: contains vocal chords
        e.Trachea: the “wind-pipe”. Supported by
          semi-circle cartilage rings.
f. Mucus glands: all of the structure
mentioned above (“a” to “e”) are lined
       with ciliated mucus membrane that
       secrete mucus. Ciliated means brush-like:
similar to the microvilli. This sticky fluid
traps dust and pathogens such as germs
and viruses before they can get to the
       lower respiratory tract.
II. Lower Respiratory Tract:
    a.Bronchii (single “bronchus”): the trachea
      splits into two smaller passageways,
entering the right and left lung.
b.Bronchioles: the bronchii divide again into
many finer tubes, lined with ciliated
      mucus membrane.
    c. Alveoli:
        i. Bronchioles end up in grape-like
clusters of tiny sacs which are kept
           moist and where gas exchange
           occurs.
ii. The tiny sacs are surrounded by many
capillaries that bring CO2-rich blood to
be diffused out and O2 from the air in
the lungs diffuses into the RBC’s to be
taken to other parts of the body.
           External Respiration!!!
iii. The sacs’ tissue is extremely thin so as
to make CO2 and O2 diffusion easy.
d.Lobes: each lung, right and left, divided
into lobes. There are three lobes on the
right and two on the left to make more
room for the heart. These lobes are
  encased in a thin tissue.
e.Lobules: Each lobe is separated into many
lobules, each with its own bronchiole and
  sac-like cluster of alveoli.
f. Pleura: several layers of lubricated tissue
that envelop the lungs to keep the lungs
in their shape (like a corset).
g.Diaphram: the muscle at the bottom of
the lungs that contracts to draw air into
the lungs, and relaxes to allow it out.
h.Intercostal muscles: “inter” means
between. “costal” means ribs. The muscle
between the ribs also contracts to draw
air in and relaxes to allow it out.
III.Homework Assignment:
a.Using the diagram on p 337 or diagrams
found in other resources, label the
     respiratory system handout.
   b. Due the next day.

30 S 2 2 Id Major Structures Of Respiratory System

  • 1. Entry slip: What does “internal respiration” occur between? Lesson 2.2- Identify major structures and function of the human respiratory system (pp335-337) of Biology-McGraw-Hill Ryerson) I. Upper Respiratory Tract- a. Nasal cavity: filters air from dust/ warms and moistens air b.Pharynx: connects nasal cavity to trachea c. Epiglottis: prevents food from entering trachea d.Larynx: contains vocal chords e.Trachea: the “wind-pipe”. Supported by semi-circle cartilage rings.
  • 2. f. Mucus glands: all of the structure mentioned above (“a” to “e”) are lined with ciliated mucus membrane that secrete mucus. Ciliated means brush-like: similar to the microvilli. This sticky fluid traps dust and pathogens such as germs and viruses before they can get to the lower respiratory tract. II. Lower Respiratory Tract: a.Bronchii (single “bronchus”): the trachea splits into two smaller passageways, entering the right and left lung. b.Bronchioles: the bronchii divide again into many finer tubes, lined with ciliated mucus membrane. c. Alveoli: i. Bronchioles end up in grape-like clusters of tiny sacs which are kept moist and where gas exchange occurs.
  • 3. ii. The tiny sacs are surrounded by many capillaries that bring CO2-rich blood to be diffused out and O2 from the air in the lungs diffuses into the RBC’s to be taken to other parts of the body. External Respiration!!! iii. The sacs’ tissue is extremely thin so as to make CO2 and O2 diffusion easy. d.Lobes: each lung, right and left, divided into lobes. There are three lobes on the right and two on the left to make more room for the heart. These lobes are encased in a thin tissue. e.Lobules: Each lobe is separated into many lobules, each with its own bronchiole and sac-like cluster of alveoli. f. Pleura: several layers of lubricated tissue that envelop the lungs to keep the lungs in their shape (like a corset). g.Diaphram: the muscle at the bottom of the lungs that contracts to draw air into the lungs, and relaxes to allow it out.
  • 4. h.Intercostal muscles: “inter” means between. “costal” means ribs. The muscle between the ribs also contracts to draw air in and relaxes to allow it out. III.Homework Assignment: a.Using the diagram on p 337 or diagrams found in other resources, label the respiratory system handout. b. Due the next day.
