How does the Trachea work The trachea (windpipe) forms the trunk of an upside-down tree and is flexible, like a vacuum tube, so that the head and neck more. The cells that line the trachea have minuscule hairs, which collect any dust that you inhale, and prevent it from entering your lungs. It is then removed by coughing.
