The respiratory system consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs. The nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi work like a system of pipes to funnel air into the lungs. In the lungs, oxygen is brought into the bloodstream in small air sacs called alveoli while carbon dioxide is removed from the blood and pushed out of the body. When something goes wrong with the respiratory system, such as an infection, it makes it harder to get oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, causing common symptoms like breathlessness, cough and chest pain.
