Culture, Race, and Gender in Sports Essay
Culture, Race, and Gender in Sports When a person of a specific gender enters a non traditional
sport for their gender/sex, many social and moral issues will arise challenging that person involved
in that particular sport. The intentions of the individual will be questioned as well as their personal
interest in the sport. Before any of these questions are asked, there must be a redefinition of gender
roles, femininity, and masculinity. In order for a person to enter a non traditional sport for their
gender/sex without being criticize about gender morality, society must set flexible definitions for
femininity and masculinity. Society must begin to accept the variety of sports both men and
women can compete in regardless of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through the movies viewed in this course this semester, we saw women who were able to play
against men and still keep their femininity. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally
meant for a particular race or gender. Society must become more understanding when it comes to
the sports different types of people play and hinder from stereotyping anyone when they
participate and perform well in that sport. When women decide to participate in sports
traditionally for men such as bodybuilding, they risk the chance of being socially stereotyped as
lesbians, or simply viewed as less feminine then say women figure skaters. For example, Venus
Williams is seen as criticized for being very masculine in build and judged on that by her
performance. The media has commented on how well she plays, and has compared her to men
in her sport. She receives fewer endorsements than many other tennis players do because of her
looks (but mainly due to her race). Men place themselves in the same situation when they chose
to perform/participate in traditional female sports like field hockey, socially stereotyped as gay or
less masculine than hockey players. There has been a change in the way certain gender sports
were viewed when women/men attempted to challenge the boundaries. Gymnastics for example
began as an all male sport. It was believed that women did not have the build nor strength to
compete in this sport. In 1928 were women allowed to compete in the Olympics in

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
The story starts off with Professor Pierre Aronnax as the main character. Various nations are
speculating about a large marine animal. They believe it could be a very large narwhal. M.
Aronnax does believe it is a large animal and not a large submarine vehicle. While returning to his
current residence in New York City, he receives a letter ask him to join an expedition to rid of the
strange creature. M. Aronnax and his servant Conseil board the Abraham Lincoln, which is one of
the fastest ships in the American Navy.
After a long days and nights aboard the ship, M. Aronnax befriends Ned Land, the Canadian
harpooner. The captain of the ship then calls a Three days grace where if they do not find the
creature, then they will return back to the land. On the very last day, Ned spots the creature s
luminous light coming from what looks like the eye. They decide to pursue it, but the creature is
too fast for them. After a while chasing it, the beast starts to play with them by circling them
multiple times. It even tried to ram the ship, but suddenly dives right under them. The ship soon

Nemo studies aquatic life. The room is also transparent allowing them to see the ocean within the

Pros And Cons Of President Hoover s New Deal
Economics can be defined as the study of the efficient allocation of scarce resources. Scarcity, a
basic concept of economics, states that society has an insufficient amount of productive resources
to fill all human wants and needs. The federal government fits into all of this by guiding the
overall pace of economic activity. They attempt to do so by to maintaining a steady economic
growth, high levels of employment, and price stability. How they carry these actions out, however,
depends on which economic model they decide to follow. The two major approaches to economic
policies are the Keynesian and Classical views. Although both of these economic theories have their

Say s Law is an economic rule that claims supply creates its own demand. Ironically, Adam Smith
and John Keynes, despite having been born almost two centuries apart, had conflicting ideas
surrounding Say s Law. Adam Smith s Classical supporters agreed with Say s Law and strongly
upheld that in a free market, workers would always be willing to lower their wages to a level
where employers could profitably offer them jobs (Armstrong Economics). This declaration would
have remained true if unionization had not come to rise. Unions are recognized as organized
associations of workers formed to protect and further worker rights and interests. Because of unions,
Keynes argued that workers would not allow their wages to be lowered. Furthermore, in his General
Theory, Keynes proposed that demand was the key to unlocking economic prosperity, not supply.
Therefore, Keynes called for an activist economic role for government to stimulate demand in times
of high unemployment while ignoring

Personal Narrative-It s Time To Fall In High School
Fall is wonderful, now. It wasn t always my favorite season. Fall marks the beginning of the
school year, and what kid likes going back to school after spending long summer days out playing
with their friends and causing trouble around the neighborhood. That s not a hundred percent
accurate, I was a good kid, and I rarely caused trouble, but summerdid mean I had a certain level of
freedom. I could stay up all night, and sleep all day, because I didn t have anywhere to be the next
day.
Fall is a season I grew to appreciate, and as I grow older I fall more and more in love with the
season. The colors, the holidays, the changes, the food, the clothes, the boots everything about fall
is like magic to me.

For me it s the spirit that comes with the sport, the ribbing and the teasing, not necessarily the
game itself. I think it s interesting to be around like minded people who get so involved in a
team that the team s win or loss becomes almost personal to them. I love the energy and the
excitement of the game. The winning or losing doesn t matter to me, I m not the one being paid
millions of dollars to play the game. It s a fun sport to watch, but I don t take my love for the sport
to an extreme. Still, there is nothing like going to an actual game, rooting for your team, and then
watching them win.
Traveling. When I was working full time, I had to plan my vacations around business levels, and
that meant I could not take vacations during the summer months. I favored taking my vacations
during the fall months with an occasional spring trip. School starts in the fall. With kids back in
school, less people travel. I get some of my best travel discounts and deals during the fall, and I
have the opportunity to explore cities at their least crowded

1984 Controlling The Mind Analysis
In 1984 by George Orwell, Big Brother uses fear and lies to control its citizens and their thoughts.
They are constantly being monitored using Telescreens, so everything done or said is recorded by
Big Brother and used against them. O Brien, an inner party member, tricks Winston Smith into
believing there were other people like Winston who oppose Big Brother. O Brien tells Winston that
his thoughts and memories are delusions that never occurred. O Brien later explains that Big
Brother controls all, including reality itself. Reality is what someone feels and experiences so it s
possible that Big Brother controls reality by controlling the mind.Reality is what is perceived to be
true, but what exactly is the truth when someone controls your mind. In science, reality is a
theoretical notion of understanding that can never be proven. In the Copenhagen Interpretation
from the school of quantum mechanics, reality does not exist without an observer to observe it so
in relation to 1984, by controlling the observer (the proles) Big Brother can control what they
observe. We control matter... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Story Of A Woman Essay
A woman is standing in her kitchen, cooking dinner for her husband and her three children. She
has many things on her mind other than food: her children, her health, her life. During her
distraction, the bread that she had put in the oven to toast begins to burn and it smells of smoke
in the kitchen. She desperately pulls the pan out of the oven and begins to fan the bread, hoping
that her husband in the living room does not smell it. Her husband enters the kitchen, smells the
remnants of the smoke, and walks slowly over to her. She uses her body to shield the seared
bread while realizing that the relief she just felt is gone. Her husband asks what happened and
she opens her mouth to answer...when he smacks her across the face. Can you ever do anything
right?! he yells. The children glance in through the open door, then scatter when they see their
mom s wide eyed expression. The bruise begins to form already and the scar tissue around her
broken heart opens back up again. This, unfortunately, is a reality for many women around the
world, especially in the United States. They live in fear every day, wondering if today is the day
that their spouse will end their lives. Others endure endless verbal abuse, killing their self esteem
and their will to live. Domestic violenceis an epidemic that is on the rise around the world. We must
come together and propose a solution to help women feel safe and secure in their homes and in
their relationships. Per the National Coalition

Knighthood and Courtly Love in the Time of King Arthur Essay
Chivalry was considered to be the code of behavior expected of a knight. It was the conduct,
ideas, and ideals of the knightly class of the Middle Ages. It became standardized and referred to
as chivalry, a term derived from the French word chevalier, meaning knight. The code urged the
knight to be brave, courageous, honorable, true to his word, and loyal to his feudal overlord, and to
defend his Church. A knight was truthful, honest, capable, educated, physically fit, noble, sincere,
and subservient to the king. A seriousviolation of these vows could result in a knight being classed
as an undignified knight, which was the ultimate insult because of all the hard workthat was put
into becoming a knight. It made it seem as if all of work... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perceval remains a very impressionable young boy and his mother teaches him loyalty. For that,
Perceval loves him mother dearly. Perceval may not have been the most sophisticated man around,
however, when he did know how to do something he did it exceedingly well. He could not forget
his love for his God though. God was a huge factor for knights and their beliefs. Perceval, the story
relates, had lost his memory so totally that he no longer remembered God. (Story of the Grail,
457) Once Perceval found his way back to God, he was seen as the better knight because of his love
for Him. Ultimately, Perceval is the one who is graced with being able to see the grail because he
was such a simple, hardworking fellow. He did not abuse his strengths or downplay his weaknesses.
The other side of this story revolves around Gawain, a knight and a stickler for the rules. He was
a very knowledgeable knight; he knew much about courtly love and was the complete opposite
of young Perceval. Gawain was a big, strong knight who was very loyal to King Arthur and
served as one of his advisors. Even though Gawain was commendable, his lacked the spirituality
that Perceval possessed. This made a big difference in who saw the grail and who didn t. One had
to be loyal to the king, the queen and God. Because Gawain wasn t loyal to God and too caught up

Error Handling Of An Activity Diagram
Abstract
This paper will give a closer look into error handling in an activity diagram as well as it will provide
an overview of other possible error handling elements that are not in the activity diagram. I will
also provide a narrative, which describes the added error handling pathways. This paper will also
include a description of the reasons checking for errors. Lastly, I will include and overview of other
possible errors.
Introduction

The importance of checking if the item is in a store because if the item is not in stock it cannot
be shipped out. Those ordering the item need to be able to plan how long it will take since the
item go to the back order status. There should be also an address check confirmation matched
against the USPS national address label database to make sure the address is correct before
shipping items, because if the items are shipped to the wrong address, then it will cost the company
assets and time.
Main Reasons Why Checking for Errors is Important
The main reason of checking for errors in an activity diagram is to recognize any errors and to
make sure that the requirements are fully met. Another important motive checking for errors is to
check for error that might cause problems when there is an issue during a life cycle transaction.
Having a working method to check for errors could possibly prompt to massive cost savings as
well as better and efficient products. According to Cebollero, M., Natarajan, J., Coles, M. (2015),
checking for errors in the system design will eventually protect both the business and the customer.
It is also important to have a cancellation error handling message in place. Without including a
cancellation condition, it may lead to constant changes and will necessitate re design of some
mechanisms of error handling considerations at a later point of time.

Critique of the Gifted and Talented Evaluation Scales
There are six sections in the response/summary forms (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002). Section
one is for identifying information of the student; while section two is where the assessor records
the student s raw scores. Section three plots the results of the GATES in a clear illustration to show
the student s performance against other gifted and talented students. Section four, five, and six all
further detail the raw score of the student by converting the raw score into percentiles, etc. Once the
scores are completed they can be assessed against the individual scales. Based on the student s
scores, a comparison is made against the ranging standard scale to estimate the likelihood of
giftedness and talentedness of the student... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This reflects that the number of items between the maximum score and the average are
consistent and reliable. Test retest reliability, in the short term of one week, on all scales except
artistic talent were fair to good (r .59 to .79) for gifted students and excellent (r .80) for average
students and students with handicaps (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002, p. 329). Inter rater
reliability measures the test s reliability and consistency across raters (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer,
Morris, 2002). GATES does not provide any information regarding inter rater reliability. Validity
Validity is the assessment of the test s informational construct, content, and criterion (Jarosewich,
Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002). Despite the fact that GATES does not reference any giftedness theory or
theory of support, content validity is confirmed for GATES since the test was developed based
on literature reviews, critiques of existing rating scales, and academic and test construction
experts of the field (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002, p. 330). A combination between federal
guidelines on giftedness and a confirmatory item analysis is the basis of GATES creation.
Construct validity is an additional way to provide support for GATES construction by examining
its factor structure (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002). Through a discriminant analysis, GATES
findings incorrectly classified some students as being gifted in leadership (60% of the time) and

The city state of Athens is a part of the Greek Archaic cities. The history of Athens dates back to
3000 BCE, where the earliest evidence of occupation is documented, but the focus here is on
Athens in the Archaic Period, which dates from 800 500 BCE. During this period there were a
large variety of features that were detailed in the accounts of the city s society and history. The
center of the city is dominated by two hills, the Pnyx and the Acropolis. Pnyx is where the Popular

Annihilation In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness
The bitterest contradiction and the deadliest conflicts of the world are carried on in every
individual breast capable of feeling and passion (Raskin 116). Even those with the best intentions
can create some of the deadliest atrocities as passion can take control over one s emotions. This
emotional instability can be seen in Heart of Darknessas Joseph Conradillustrates how one s
passion of saving others slowly turned into a madness that caused hundreds of fatalities. We
wonder, what could cause a man, such as Kurtz, in Heart of Darkness, to enter another country
with the best intentions, to become so violent and be the reason behind thousands of brutal and
torturous killings without any resentment. It was the unchecked power instilled within Kurtz that
led him to act on his horrific impulses. In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad claims one who has
an unchecked power can fear losing it so eminently, that he or she is willing to engender
atrocities that sustain the power the individual possess. In this case, Conrad suggests one way an
individual reinforces his or her power on others is through annihilation. In Heart of Darkness,
Conrad implies an individual develops a need to fulfill his or her role as the superior, through
cultural values. During the South African wars, Europeans were granted the title as the superior
group and praised higher than any other race (Reybrouck 109). Reybrouck says because of this,
Kurtz developed a sense of self through the great

Word To Boast By Greek Language Analysis
I chose the word to save here because it fits the context well, and salvation is best represented by
this English word. To be made does not fit the context, and to be healed does not encompass the
full extent of what Christ is doing to us, which is saving us from deserved eternal torment.
Defining this word as to save is the best definition because it fully encompasses the salvation that
Christ gives to people, while also correctly aligning itself to the intended meaning for the Ephesian
audience.

important to actually communicate with the audience, so in my application of the text, I would

would also tell them about how they are continually in the process of being saved, and show them
from my own study, in an understandable way, how Christians continually work out their

affirming the meaning of Paul s words in a way that kindles their love for Christ. This text is

Battle of the Bulge, a massive German counteroffensive which began in December 1944,
ultimately produced the largest casualty rate in any one battle throughout World War II. The
Allied Forces alone lost almost 80,000 at the Battle of the Bulge. This casualty rate could have
been much higher if Hitler would ve grasped the importance and value of supply and logistical

Setting the Stage (The Battle) Arguably the most infamous battle during World War II, the
Battle of the Bulge took place in the heavily wooded area of the Ardennes Forest region. The
overall goal of this massive German counteroffensive was to break through the Western Front
which consisted of both US and British forces. The primary objective behind Hitler s plan was
too simply take back the initiative the Germans lost on beach of Normandy France. A few
months prior to the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler had barely survived an assassination attempt. On
20 July 1944, one of Hitler s most trusted officers placed a bomb in a brief case and which he left
underneath the table during a meeting (Gavin, J. (2003). The bomb unfortunately did not kill
Hitler but it did represent the fact that, within Hitler s inner circle, there were disenfranchised high
ranking German officers who wanted Hitler dead. 45 days before the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler
was almost assassinated by one of his most trusted German Officers, an event which Allied Forces
remained unaware of for a long time. Hitler s plan focused on the use of his most elite Panzer units
with more than 1,500 tanks, 2,000 artillery guns, and an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 infantry
soldiers (Gavin, J. (2003). The notion that Hitler even had the ability to mount a counteroffensive
that big was considered impossible by the higher command of the Allied Forces. This, along with

Dbq 13 Colonials
Spain, England, and France led the colonization of the Americas having distinct missions, and
using different approach. By the mid 1960 s, all these great nations were in a race to establish
American colonies. Like in every expedition, the primary purposes were to gain wealth and riches,
which was the main reasoning behind all of the colonization s. On their way to building these
settlements, the colonials encountered the Native Americans and had to deal with them in very
different ways. The first of these nations to arrive in the new world was Spain, led by Christopher

The Influence Of Christology On The Patristic Church
Christology was a central debate in the patristic church. The discussion about Jesus Christ was
prevalent throughout the church for centuries and resulted in church councils that produced creeds
for the whole church to stand upon as a foundation for Christological orthodoxy. Even with these
orthodox creeds, the debate did not end there. The contemporary church, just like the patristic
church, has found itself fighting to hold to an orthodox Christology.
Just as it was in the patristic church the contemporary debate proceeds from a desire to be true to
the teaching of the faith handed down from the apostles. The issue for the contemporary Church is
not so different from the patristic church. There is a breakdown of functional oneness, which ...

This emphasis on the humanity of Jesus, the denial of his divinity, and the strict law based lifestyle
of the Spirit Adoptionists gave space for many Jewish believers to join them.
The Christian Church in Italy
The Christian Church in Italy, also known as CCI, identify as Christian. They profess Jesus Christ
as redeemer and savior in their statement of faith. They are strict monotheists while still professing
Jesus as the Son of God, the Christ, prophet, and savior of all mankind. They do not deny the
virgin birth and claim that they believe in Christ s atoning work of salvation upon the cross. These
are orthodox beliefs and diversions from Spirit Adoptionist teachings.
CCI is clear about their belief in the full humanity of Jesus but when it comes to his divinity they
are either silent or they state that they are only open to a dialogue about it. As we have said, all
the scripture presents a Christ man. Our goal however is not limited to this, because we have a
duty to investigate the other verses that, over the years, were interpreted in favor of the pre
existence of Christ, his incarnation, his divinity. When CCI says that Jesus was the Son of God
they do not mean that he was divine. One cannot hold the orthodox Christian understanding of what
is meant by Son of God if you are only open to a conversation about his divinity.
They continue to diverge from orthodoxy when speaking about

Gender Approaches to Analyzing Literature
Recently, gender studies have become the main sources of information for understanding gender
issues in the society. The masculine and feminine divide used to represent the socially constructed
sexual traits which men and women are expected to portray in their relationships and interactions.
In The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, the characters strongly conform to socially
constructed genderroles in the way they dress, talk and act. This paper explores how the main
characters in the novel including the detective, Samuel Spade, his partner, Miles Archer and their
client Miss. Rudy Wonderly actively demonstrate the traditional gender roles.
The female characters are expected to exhibit feminism traits through their dressing, talking and
acting. In relation to the issue of dressing, Miss. Rudy Wonderly is portrayed as a fashionable
and attractive woman. This is demostrated clearly in the first chapter when she is introduced and
the way detective Samuel and his partner Archer behave towards her. In his description,
Hammett says, She wore two shades of blue that had been selected because of her eyes (Hammett
2). When she entered his office, Spade rose bowing... (2) which was a sign of respect for the
beautiful lady. She same behavior is demonstrated by Archer when he is introduced to Miss
Wonderly. Hammett observes that Archer entered Spade s office while ... ducking his head and
smiling at Miss Wonderly, making a vaguely polite gesture with the hat in his hand (2).

The court finds you guilty on all accounts. You are sentenced to 35 years in federal prison. Court
dismissed. If only justice in America was the same as a hollywood movie, where, in the end,
each and every person put on trial receives a true and just verdict. It would be nice if America s
justice system was designed so that you couldn t be the next victim of corruption innocent and
sent to prison, or strapped to a table and put to death; or robbed of your life savings by American
lawyers (Sachs, America s Corrupt Legal). Welcome to the new America, where all it takes is

and not given a second thought. Although America often prides itself on its just ways of
governing and dealing with potential criminals, the justice system is often corrupted because of
social issues, ethical issues, corrupt officials, and control of the press. Corruption is no longer just
judges taking bribes. It is defined as any organized, interdependent system in which part of the
system is either not performing duties it was originally intended to, or performing them in an
improper way, to the detriment of the system s original purpose (Sachs, Judicial Misconduct).

Global Warming Is One Of The Biggest Concerns To Our Planet.
Global Warming is one of the biggest concerns to our planet. As of right now, ice caps are melting,

coincidence. Mankind is causing the decline of our earthat a rapid pace from pollution, to cutting

3). The greenhouse effect can not be stopped entirely, since it is a natural occurrence; however,
there are solutions mankind can take to reduce its effects on our planet. Some may argue that
humans are not the main cause of global warming, but science proves otherwise. Although humans
do cause a cooling process on the earth, it is significantly smaller, and it is not enough to balance
out the warming effect. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as cited in the NOAA
states, Earth s average surface temperature has risen by about 1.5 degrees fahrenheit since 1880
[due to human activities] (2007, p. 3). This number may seem small in perspective, but in reality,
the earth should maintain the same temperature and that is not what is happening; consequently,
earth s temperature has been rapidly changing more than it ever has before. The main reason this
number is so large is because of the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was a period of
time where machines and manufacturing flourished. Although it was good for the economy, it was
deadly for the earth. This spike in machinery was ultimately the leading start of a chain of events
that lead to why global warming is at the highest it has ever been. Such a dramatic rise in
temperature in over these short years is an obvious sign that the earth is warming.

Literary Devices Of Scene In Faking It By Michael Chabon
Most authors who implement the literary device of scene in their writing do so to establish an
entry point to the universal subject they are trying to portray. In literature, scene is an experience or
moment that the author explains in great detail through various devices in order to perceive that
time is slowed. In Faking It, Michael Chabondoes exactly this, utilizing a scene to introduce the
main point of his chapter. In my essay, ________ , I made a conscience effort to mimic this literary
device; however, failed to properly utilize it as an entry point. At the forefront of Faking It ,
Michael Chabon paints a descriptive scene in which he was attempting to install a towel rack in
the bathroom. To start the chapter, Chabon dictated that the only reason he was granted this
chore was because he knew, kind of, how to use an electric drill. He then provided a descriptive
image of his efforts, explaining how he read the instruction while sagely stroking [his]
whiskers...[looking] as if [he] knew what [he] was doing and then proceeded to [drop] one of the
metal towel bars onto [his] right thumb . Chabon continually comments and hints at his
inexperience and that he was forced to sustain the appearance of competence . This passage is a
perfectly crafted depiction of a scene: Chabon utilized both imagery and diction to illustrate a man
who was unaware of how to install a towel rack, yet felt compelled and pressured into assuming the
responsibility of doing so and

he once was.
Religion is a major theme in the life of Pi. Pi becomes a Christian, and a Muslim throughout his
childhood, and was born a Hindu. Being able to love thee rather different religions at once shows
the immense love he has for god. However, Pi s strong faith in god becomes much less prominent
when he s on the lifeboat with the animals. In other words, his physical needs take over and
dominate over his religious ones. He still worships his gods, however is occasionally. Whenever
he finds a fish or any source of food, he thanks his gods. For example when he reached the
carnivorous island, he thanked god like crazy(page 233). However, he later discovered that it
was a man eating island. I think the author included this to show that Pi is continuing to lose his
faith in god, and after this discovery he has lost even more confidence in god. This shows signs
of doubt in Pi s mind, he doesn t understand what he should thank god for. Does this mean he
completely lost his faith in god, not necessarily. He could still have a little bit of faith left in god,
but we can be sure that it s not as strong as it once

She became an animal scientist and a professor at the university. The protagonist, Temple Grandin,
was able to explain and describe very skillfully how a person with this condition feels, hears, sees,
perceives and thinks. She helps people peek inside the mind of a person with Asperger s syndrome
which facilitates good communication and better understanding. She demonstrates the importance
of pictures in the mind of autisitc people and how powerful their visual skills can be. Another
reason why I think this movie is such a great, inspirational movie is because of how a woman with
autism can accomplish something so inspiring that shows people with autism shouldn t be
viewed as someone who can t do much or someone who doesn t have the skills and knowledge to
do what normal people can. Temple Grandin has probably made a big difference in what people
think of ones who have autism and I think that is great. Just because a person has autism doesn t
necessarily mean that people don t have autism should view them as someone lower than
themselves. People with autism are only stronger willed and even though they may have difficulty
with life, Temple Grandin shows that it doesn t matter if you have autism or not because you can
achieve your goals, you just need that determination in your life. From this movie, I have learned

Cosmopolitanism In Things Fall Apart And Kwame Anthony Achebe
Throughout life, one is faced with choices between individualism and communitarianism. Such
choices are reflected in many works of literature, including Chinua Achebe s novel Things Fall
Apart and Kwame Anthony Appiah s Cosmopolitanism. The current report examines the first
reading in the context of the second. Achebe s story is about the clash between tradition and
change in an African village; Appiah s work advocates a unified perspective from which we are
seen to be connected through basic humanism. The basic assumption of this author is that when one
applies Appiah s idea of obligation to others in Cosmopolitanismto the character of Okonkwo in
Achebe s Things Fall Apart(who is also the book s protagonist), the character changes in terms of
how his fate or destiny is conveyed, as well as other aspects of his development. Although
Okonkwo is a character of complexity, depth, and three dimensionality, one of his chief features is
his resistance to change. This resistance is personal in nature, and Okonkwo then tries to impose
this personal resistance on a greater community, rather than listening to it. By emphasizing the
failure of the personal over the communal in Okonkwo s actions, Achebe draws sharp parallels
between people helping each other and people driving each other towards entropy. According to
Appiah, cosmopolitanism can be defined according to several of its divisions: One is the idea that
we have obligations to others, obligations that stretch

Princess Diana Eulogy Analysis
On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a fatal car crash while in Paris. Her funeral was held
on September 6, 1997, at Westminster Abbey in London, England. Thousands of people attended,
while many more watched from their homes. A few of her family members spoke great things
about her; however, the eulogy her brother wrote shocked the millions that were watching.
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary a eulogy is a commendatory oration or writing
especially in honor of one deceased (Merriam Webster Dictionary). This eulogy written for Princess
Diana had many factors that set it apart from typical eulogies, but these aspects made it more
effective.
A typical eulogy consists of praise, happy memories, stories, and positive personality features of
the one deceased. In opposition, this particular eulogy had a negative tone regarding the sadness in
her life, as well as blaming the royal family and the paparazzi for her untimely passing. This eulogy
used aspects that most speeches, essays, and other forms of writing use, including pathos, ethos,
logos, parallelism, imagery, and negative comments toward her unfortunate loss of life.
Earl used pathos to appeal to the audience s emotions. He used it to draw the audience in, and get
their attention by talking about family. An example of pathos from the eulogy is, These were days
I will always treasure. It was as if we had been transported back to our childhood when we spent

Abstract
In order to visualize and conceptualize the affect of the contact angle on impact force, testing of
four different shapes and comparing the results was done. Conclusions were drawn on the affects of
the type of contact surface on the measured impact force. In analyzing these results, it was also be
of interest to calculate the theoretical force using a derivation of equations and comparing them to
the measured data. Doing so may allow for further understanding concerning the possible errors in
calculations or possible mis assumptions being made.
Because theoretical results and measured results did not agree within reasonable ... Show more

This allows the theoretical data to further validate the measured data. Because the hemispherical
shape had error bars which did not overlap, the data corrections were made to that particular set of
data. Refer to Figures 5 and 6 to see how these error bars either did not overlap or came close to not
overlapping.
Notice in Figures 9 and 10 the comparisons in the before calculated force compared to that of the
corrected forces. Specific data on these corrections may be found in Tables 7 and 8 in the Appendix.

Conclusions and Recommendations
This experiment effectively showed that the resultant impact force acting on the different target
shapes changed depending on the shape, which is affected by the contact angle. Further analysis of
the data also showed that some beginning assumptions were incorrect, allowing insight on the
reasoning for incorrect data percentages. These were corrected via further derivations in the

Helen Of Troy, By Margaret Atwood
Unlike the many versions of Helen of Troy, in Margaret Atwood s The Penelopiad, she paints the
infamous woman as imperfect, as a siren, a goddess, a murderer. By making the reader see Helen
through Penelope s eyes, new layers are added to this character so often sought after. Helen and
Penelope s dynamic adds a layer to not only The Penelopiad, but also to the male dominated
Odyssey. These factors create a dynamic feminine force, and both women are in multiple ways a
foil to one another. Many of Penelopes insecurities comes from her own view of herself and the
way her experiences have shaped her. At the very beginning of the novel she says Hadn t I been
faithful? Hadn t I waited, and waited, and waited, despite the temptation almost the compulsion to
do otherwise? And what did I amount to, once the official version gained ground? An edifying
legend. A stick used to beat other women with (Pg. 2, The Penelopiad). Penelope already has
immense difficulty with herself and her identity. It is an interesting dichotomy. In one way
Penelope wants to be like Helenbecause she doesn t have the status of a legendary faithful wife.
However, she is forgetting that Helen does have her own legendary status, one that Penelope
sometimes longs for, but is most likely unsatisfactory in its own way. One of Penelope s biggest
jealousies for Helen is the amount of power she has over all she encounters, in life and death.
When Penelope first settles into her new life she states ...there was

There are multiple reasons why the Plebeians were important to Rome. They were the farmers, the

citizens. I will attempt to explain why the Plebeians were so important.
Who were the Plebeians? What was their role in Rome? What occupation did they hold? How many
of them were there? All important questions. The Plebeians were members of the general citizenry
in ancient Rome as opposed to the privileged patrician class (The Editors of Encyclopædia

the minority. Many of us can understand that. We have all been in the position of being the

Plebeians are painted as victims and Patricians as power hungry, greedy noblemen. We feel like

historical touchstones. They link the past to the present and enable people to remember and respect
the sacrifice of those who died, fought, participated or were affected by conflict. American
casualties in Vietnam began in 1959 and ended with the evacuation of Saigon in 1975. Never
officially designated a war, the Vietnam conflict became increasingly unpopular as casualties and
news coverage of the fighting increased. Those people who served in Vietnam returned to an
unsupportive nation and a media that emphasized the social problems of its veterans. There were
few attempts to honor Vietnam veterans until 1978, when an insignificant and ambiguous plaque
was placed behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ( Visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
).
One year later, Jan Scruggs (a wounded Vietnam veteran) founded the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Fund (VVMF), which sought private funds from both war supporters and opponents to build a
memorial honoring the veterans but not the conflict. Honoring the men and women who served in
the controversial Vietnam War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial chronologically lists the names of
more than 58,000 Americans who gave their lives in service to their country ( Veterans Memorial
Rededicated As 42 More Names Are Added ). The Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the

General Motors And The Affecting Factors Of Everyday Business
General Motors and the Affecting Factors of Everyday Business The company I have selected to
do my individual paper on is General Motors. General motors is the second largest auto
manufacturer globally, manufacturing cars and trucks in 34 companies. General Motors are
headquartered in Detroit, Michigan and employs two hundred and sixty six thousand people.
General Motors has many different branches, all vehicle manufacturing branches including, Chevy,
Hummer, Saturn, and SAAB to name a few. General motors has sold its products in over one
hundred and forty countries. (General Motors) The reason I have selected this company is because

While keeping their original brand of manufacturing (OBM) and their original design
manufacturing (ODM) General Motors needs to work on their value chain in order to get the
perception they want to gain from their customers. (SWOT Analysis) Right now General Motors
is fighting a poor quality perception from the loss they have incurred over the past decade.
General Motors must continue to improve on their product reliability and quality. The question
comes to the mind when dealing with a company like this, do you budget money to push, the
stronger divisions of your company, or do you try to share equal across the board. This is the
deciding factor when companies decide how to use their resources and capabilities. Using these
assets to full capacity and effectively well is the common everyday decisions a company like this
has to do. GM must reposition itself as an innovative global competitor in order to survive. The
company has been continually plagued with a host of issues, including lacking internal cost control
and perpetually shortsighted strategies. The company must first and most importantly close the gap
between the perception of its product reliability and the actual quality and innovation of its
vehicles. (Internal Analysis and Recommendations) With these companies always going to be a
factor in our lives not only from the consumer market, but also the market share it holds itself in
today s economy. I feel it will be interesting to

Foreshadowing Examples In The Most Dangerous Game
In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game, author Richard Connell expertly exploits
foreshadowing and vivid imagery to emphasize danger and suspense. Many authors attempt to
do this, but only a small few succeed. Everyone who has stayed up past their bedtime reading a
book will tell you, they stayed awake because the book they were reading was filled with
suspense. It is suspense that separates the great stories from the good stories. And The Most
Dangerous Game is definately a great one. By using foreshadowing and utilizing his characters
five senses, Connell keeps readers at the edge of their seats, eagerly waiting to find out what
comes next. Foreshadowing is a vital ingredient to any suspenseful story. It hints at the idea that
something is off kilter, without ever revealing exactly what that something is. This leaves readers
with an uneasy feeling about the plot, but they can t quite figure out why. Because of that
suspicious feeling, readers are left with a burning desire to find out what happens on the next
page. Foreshadowing can be achieved many different ways, such as through eree names,
unpleasant conversations, and odd occurrences. In one of the very first sentences in the story,
readers can already observe the usages of foreshadowing. The island they land on is referred to as
Ship Trap Island, which hints at the danger it holds for sailors who may be passing by. A few
paragraphs later, it is mentioned that the island holds a very unpleasant

Genetic Engineering is a Process of Altering Genetic...
INTRODUCTION:
Genetic Engineering is a process where an organism s genetic material is altered by introducing a
new DNA. It is where a gene is artificially removed from one organism and transmitted into another
using biotechnology. Its goal is to provide with one or more traits that are not found in recipient
organism, giving it the ability to perform a certain action, which the organism in nature cannot.
DNA and proteins are very important aspects in order to understand genetic engineering. DNA is
the genetic material that is found in every organism. It is located in the nucleus of every cell. It is
made up of four complimentary bases, Adenine to Thymine and Guanine to Cytosine. These four
bases help make the genetic code by providing information for the cell and essential proteins that
an organism requires in order to survive. Some proteins act as enzymes that can help speed up the
reaction. The genetic code is similar in every organism which benefits in the process of genetic
engineering. When a gene is transmitted into the recipient organism through the means of
transformation, the similarity of the code allows the recipient organism to express the specific trait.
Some bacteria use transformation by acquiring the naked DNA from the environment and alter
their genes by attaining new traits.
Escherichia coli, also known as E.coli is a bacterium that lives in the intestine of warm blooded
organisms that causes sickness and several diseases particularly in the weak

The Potential Of Participant Observation
Yes, research varies according to the nature of arguments and their personal information can also be
included in the entire material or changes of the information. For this reason, it will be unethical to
record the information and focus on what is in process to control further.
2.Which method do you think is more likely to produce valid information participant or
nonparticipant observation? Why? The valid information is mostly expected from the grounds of
what are the changes in behaviour and how much responses are ethical. In this regard, the most of
the responses are valid from focus group analysis, lab research and questionnaire as well as
interview studies.
3.Are there any kinds of behaviors that should not be observed? Explain your thinking. If so, give
an example. The behaviors those are immediate after any specific event or the influence from
external parties must not be observed or reported. The management and the ideas for this
advancement is required for all stages.
4.What would you say is the biggest advantage of participant observation? The biggest
disadvantage?
The biggest advantage of the participant observation is their sincere behaviour and feeling the
situation accordingly. The disadvantage is looking for the issues those are not related to the field
as it can be the personal biasedness.
5.A major difficulty in observing people is that much that goes on may be missed by the observer.
Is this always true? Are there any ways to decrease what is

Discrimination During The Construction Of The Canadian...
Thesis Statement
During the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1881 1885, the discrimination against
Chinese workers demonstrates social injustice.
Summary The Canadian Pacific Railway was the first transcontinental railway built in Canada to
connect Canada from coast to coast. (Canadian Pacific Para. 9) The construction almost delayed
completely because of John A. MacDonald losing power, but it was finally continued with the help
of a syndicate. (Canadian Pacific Para. 4) Due to the insufficient amount of adequate workers in
British Columbia, Chinese contract workers were imported to help construct the track with
minimal pay and harsh conditions. (Canada Para. 1) Chinese Canadians were discriminated by being

Chinese contract workers came to Canada to escape the harsh conditions in China caused by the
Opium War and the Tai Ping Rebellion since the middle of the 18th century. (Citizenship and

Chinese immigrants were as harsh as well. The health and safety of the Chinese workers were
compromised when constructing the Canadian Pacific Railway. Many lives were lost because
their low salaries couldn t afford fruits, which contained vitamin C. As a result, many workers
suffered or even died from scurvy. The safety of those Chinese immigrants were compromised
because they were given the toughest jobs such as using dynamite. Accidents occurred more than
often, which were effects from the dangerous work given to them. Injured workers weren t even

Life Of A Serial Killer
As members in today s data fixated society, we are always being reminded of the horrific acts
that people nowadays are able to commit. One watches the news and catches wind of a
homicide, or reads an interesting book about killers. The only time that the New York Daily
News has ever surpassed the New York Times, was the point at which the feature showed the true
identification of Jack the Ripper (Landau, Harding, 2014). As you wade through these odds and
ends of reality, one cannot resist the urge to be unearthed by the idea, what makes a person
effectively commit such repulsive acts? There have been wide ranges of studies done with
expectations of discovering an answer. For a crimeas heinous as serial murder, there are two

French Revolution Constitutional Church
Immediately, a proposal was made to halt the taking of solemn vows. This development associated
the Church with the scheming and corruption that had been featured in anticlerical literature of the
eighteenth century, as well as prepared the way for the closure of France s monasteries and the
departure of their inhabitants. The Assembly hoped that the sale of monasteries and their contents
would help to stabilize the nation s finances. Thousands of letters of protest met the
announcements; the new French state had not only taken control of the revenue and property of the
Church, but also seemed to be redefining the boundaries between church and state. The Assembly
became charged with the financial administration of the Church, and took the... Show more content

Its early losses cast further suspicion on refractory clergymen and their followers, now suspected of
conspiring with the enemy. The collapse of the monarchy on August 10 provided an added impetus
for the destruction of anything associated with the ancien rГ©gime. Thus, the Assembly suppressed
all remaining religious orders, even those staffing schools and hospitals, and ordered that the
remaining non jurors to leave, or to be arrested and deported. Suspicion furthered when news
arrived that the fortress town had fallen to the allied Prussian forces, and Parisians believed that
imprisoned counter revolutions were preparing to ally themselves with the enemy. Such paranoia
led to an outbreak of preventative justice when Parisians descended on the city s prison,
slaughtering over a thousand prisoners in what would later be known as the September Massacres.
Such violence made clear the distrust that would prevent any reconciliation between the Church and

Children s Ethical Reasoning Correlate With Their Moral...
In the study conducted by Baird and Astington (2004), their purpose of their two studies was to
answer two questions. The first question was asking when do children mentally understand an
individual s actions and how that child considers that individual s beliefs, desires, and intentions.
The second question was whether and how children s motivated based moral reasoning correlates
with their moral behavior.
In study one, the researchers wanted to address whether children can evaluate identical actions
differently when considering another person s motivation. The children s ages range from four,
five, and seven years old. Each participant heard six stories and the two characters in each story
performed identical actions, but each person had a different motivation for performing the action.
The two characters in the story had two different kinds of moral quality, one having a good motive
and the other having a bad motive. The researchers were interested in seeing how the participants
would differentiate between the good and bad motives the characters had in each story. The
researchers measured the participant s moral judgement in two ways, the first being the act
evaluation measure and the second being the punishment measure. The act evaluation measure
assesses if participants could evaluate the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Introduction As a team, we have identified two additional problems that need to be addressed by
Doohickeys U Need and their Human Resource Manager. As a company, Doohickeys U Need,
needs to implement our recommendations to help protect the company from legal action. The
issues we would like to address in this report are as follows: 1. Layoffs and Dismissing Employees
2. Healthy Work Environment Below are detailed accounts of each problem, with supporting
evidence. The corresponding explanations of our solutions follow each account. As a team, we
developed these solutions that if implemented, should assist Doohickeys U Need in eradicating the
issues, and establish a more productive and safe workplace environment. Problem #1:... Show more

The HR Manager should design job descriptions with employee and supervisory input, listing job
responsibilities in descending order of time involved. These can be used in the hiring process as
well, in particular for the manufacturing jobs that have physical requirements such as the ability
to lift 25 lbs . (The Case) Since job descriptions cannot possibly list every single task an employee
may be expected to perform in their work day, other duties as assigned or another descriptor for
possible additional duties should be included. Once accurate job descriptions are in place,
performance reviews should be instituted at Doohickeys U Need. We recommend that these
take place quarterly, and that they be a collaborative effort between supervisors and employees.
Employees may be asked to evaluate their own performance against the job description in place
for their position, as well as future goals for improvement and areas which the employee feels
they most excel in. Both the supervisory and employee evaluation will be placed in the
employee personnel file. With accurate job descriptions and performance evaluations on file,
Human Resources will better be able to evaluate employee performance and decide if discipline
problems are part of an ongoing problem with an employee or if they were a one off or perhaps
even indicative of a failure in the system that points to a need for further training or resources.
Solution #2: Temporary/Seasonal

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for severe gram negative

responsible for acute and chronic diseases in patients with compromised immune systems.1 3 Acute
diseases involve pneumonia,4 while chronic infections include cystic fibrosis,5,6 which are
complicated and can often be life threatening. Numerous factors enabling infections to occur, such
as the biotoxins released by this bacterium, are documented.7 9 However, little is known about

Additionally, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography

much light or their water being too cold because they were near an open window. For the groups
that had full regeneration their water temperature was not to warm and not too cold. Their blades

Don John In Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
Stories are a reflection of real life. We can see real life messages and examples of how to act
through the actions of the characters. Don John from Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
is not a good influence, but a careful reader can still use him as an example of how a godly
Christian should not behave. Don John is morose while God calls us to be joyful, he attempts to
cause strife when God tells us to live in harmony with others, and he flees and does not take
responsibility for his actions while Christ freely took on responsibility for the actions of all
mankind. Don John himself states that he is naturally sullen. He uses his natural bad temper as
to excuse himself from taking responsibility for his actions. Don John says, it must not be
denied, but I am a plain dealing villain(Much). The bible tells us in Thessalonians 5:16 18,
Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God s will for
you who belong to Christ Jesus. Don John is a morose person and does not strive to be better as

An Extension Of The Activities Essay
Research is a systematic, precise and rigorous inquiry or investigation that allows people to
understand the nature of a problem or idea (Grossoehme, 2014; Stringer, 2014). All research can
be visualised as an extension of the activities we engage in day by day, which requires one to
move past the day to day understandings and engage in a more precise and rigorous description,
observation or explanation of the problem or idea (Stringer, 2014).
The general distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is that quantitative research
uses empirical data in the form of numbers, while qualitative research uses empirical data that is not
in the form of numbers, usually words, but there is much more to the research designs than their
use of numerical data or not (Stringer, 2014; Punch, 2009). Qualitative research is associated with
research conducted in the social world, as opposed to quantitative research which focuses on
predicting and controlling phenomena on the physical world, and both have their own way of
thinking and approaches to research and collecting their data (Stringer, 2014, Punch, 2009). For the
purpose of this assignment we will look into the ideas, thinking and approaches of two qualitative
research designs; grounded theory and action research.
Grounded theory
Grounded theory is both a strategy of research and a style of analysis that uses the procedures to
develop a theory grounded in the data, using an inductive, theory discovery method, whose

Speech On Physical Fitness
Physical fitness plays an important role in one s life, with the growing needs of people, tension,
anxiety and stress have become one of the most common problems in modern life. Many people
suffer from potentially debilitating symptoms of stress and stress related health issues at some
point in their lives and surprisingly people are often unaware that they are suffering from stress
related health issues. Studies have shown that people who are stressed are more likely to eat
unhealthy food and hence land in complications such as diabetes, obesity and other joint related
problems such as arthritis. High levels of stress in pregnant women may also trigger dangerous
changes in their children, which include behavioral and developmental issues. Effectively coping
with stress, managing it and finding ways to reduce unnecessary, unhealthy levels of stress are
important skills of life. When you look at a range of ideas you can do to relieve stress and feel

Subjection of women Essay examples
proach to understanding the properties of persons (their traits, desires, abilities, interests) which is
not only very popular and historically important, but also intuitively plausible. It begins with a
division of human properties into three categories. Natural properties are those persons have in
virtue of being members of a natural kind, and they originate in the structures definitive of the
species. Other propertiesare unnatural, in that they result from abnormal structures. And some
properties are nonnatural (or social) in that they represent replacements, modifications, or extensions
brought about by the social environment operating on the basic structures.1 Such is the ontology. It

This . . . will remain true . . . as long as social institutions do not admit the same free development
of originality in women which is possible to men. When that time comes . . . we shall see . . . as
much as it is necessary to know of the nature of women. quot;5
Note that Mill speaks of the quot;free quot; development of women. In the history of philosophy a
social doctrine has usually been attached to those ontological and epistemological theses, the
doctrine that persons are free (or have freedom) to the extent that they are not constrained, either
in their behavior or in their development, by social influences. The liberal doctrine of quot;equal
maximal liberty, quot; then, is both a methodological rule for the discovery of the natural as well
as a political principle limiting one sort of social influence. Mill elaborates and defends the
political doctrine in On Liberty and employs it in The Subjection of Women, which also contains
the epistemology. Another statement of the corollary from the latter work more clearly connects
the discovery of the natural with freedom: quot;no one can safely pronounce that if women s
nature were left to choose its direction as freely as men s, and

Hitler seized this opportunity to claim that the democratic system had failed the German people
and that the Nazis were their only hope (Why, 2013). Almost everyone is guilty of adding a little
fluff to a statement or claim in order to make it more believable or agreeable. Take this same
situation presented twice, using a different approach each time. Wife says to husband, We need

spirits about it? Instead imagine the situation approached like this: Wife says, Husband, there is
something I need your help with (one hand outstretched to hold his, a smile on her face instead
of a glare). Hitler knew how to use power words, how to sell himself like a used car salesman in
order to win favor and even how to present a boldfaced lie and have it believed. When favor wasn

  • 3. Culture, Race, and Gender in Sports Essay Culture, Race, and Gender in Sports When a person of a specific gender enters a non traditional sport for their gender/sex, many social and moral issues will arise challenging that person involved in that particular sport. The intentions of the individual will be questioned as well as their personal interest in the sport. Before any of these questions are asked, there must be a redefinition of gender roles, femininity, and masculinity. In order for a person to enter a non traditional sport for their gender/sex without being criticize about gender morality, society must set flexible definitions for femininity and masculinity. Through the movies viewed in this course this semester, we saw women who were able to play against men and still keep their femininity. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally meant for a particular race or gender. Society must become more understanding when it comes to the sports different types of people play and hinder from stereotyping anyone when they participate and perform well in that sport. When women decide to participate in sports traditionally for men such as bodybuilding, they risk the chance of being socially stereotyped as lesbians, or simply viewed as less feminine then say women figure skaters. For example, Venus Williams is seen as criticized for being very masculine in build and judged on that by her performance. The media has commented on how well she plays, and has compared her to men in her sport. She receives fewer endorsements than many other tennis players do because of her looks (but mainly due to her race). Men place themselves in the same situation when they chose to perform/participate in traditional female sports like field hockey, socially stereotyped as gay or less masculine than hockey players. There has been a change in the way certain gender sports were viewed when women/men attempted to challenge the boundaries. Gymnastics for example began as an all male sport. It was believed that women did not have the build nor strength to compete in this sport. In 1928 were women allowed to compete in the Olympics in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Pros And Cons Of President Hoover s New Deal Economics can be defined as the study of the efficient allocation of scarce resources. Scarcity, a basic concept of economics, states that society has an insufficient amount of productive resources to fill all human wants and needs. The federal government fits into all of this by guiding the overall pace of economic activity. They attempt to do so by to maintaining a steady economic growth, high levels of employment, and price stability. How they carry these actions out, however, depends on which economic model they decide to follow. The two major approaches to economic policies are the Keynesian and Classical views. Although both of these economic theories have their pro s and con s, ultimately, government should opt for the Classical school... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Say s Law is an economic rule that claims supply creates its own demand. Ironically, Adam Smith and John Keynes, despite having been born almost two centuries apart, had conflicting ideas surrounding Say s Law. Adam Smith s Classical supporters agreed with Say s Law and strongly upheld that in a free market, workers would always be willing to lower their wages to a level where employers could profitably offer them jobs (Armstrong Economics). This declaration would have remained true if unionization had not come to rise. Unions are recognized as organized associations of workers formed to protect and further worker rights and interests. Because of unions, Keynes argued that workers would not allow their wages to be lowered. Furthermore, in his General Theory, Keynes proposed that demand was the key to unlocking economic prosperity, not supply. Therefore, Keynes called for an activist economic role for government to stimulate demand in times of high unemployment while ignoring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Personal Narrative-It s Time To Fall In High School Fall is wonderful, now. It wasn t always my favorite season. Fall marks the beginning of the school year, and what kid likes going back to school after spending long summer days out playing with their friends and causing trouble around the neighborhood. That s not a hundred percent accurate, I was a good kid, and I rarely caused trouble, but summerdid mean I had a certain level of freedom. I could stay up all night, and sleep all day, because I didn t have anywhere to be the next day. I think it s interesting to be around like minded people who get so involved in a team that the team s win or loss becomes almost personal to them. I love the energy and the excitement of the game. The winning or losing doesn t matter to me, I m not the one being paid millions of dollars to play the game. It s a fun sport to watch, but I don t take my love for the sport to an extreme. Still, there is nothing like going to an actual game, rooting for your team, and then watching them win. Traveling. • 7. 1984 Controlling The Mind Analysis In 1984 by George Orwell, Big Brother uses fear and lies to control its citizens and their thoughts. They are constantly being monitored using Telescreens, so everything done or said is recorded by Big Brother and used against them. O Brien, an inner party member, tricks Winston Smith into believing there were other people like Winston who oppose Big Brother. O Brien tells Winston that his thoughts and memories are delusions that never occurred. O Brien later explains that Big Brother controls all, including reality itself. Reality is what someone feels and experiences so it s possible that Big Brother controls reality by controlling the mind.Reality is what is perceived to be true, but what exactly is the truth when someone controls your mind. In science, reality is a theoretical notion of understanding that can never be proven. In the Copenhagen Interpretation from the school of quantum mechanics, reality does not exist without an observer to observe it so in relation to 1984, by controlling the observer (the proles) Big Brother can control what they observe. • 8. The Story Of A Woman Essay A woman is standing in her kitchen, cooking dinner for her husband and her three children. She has many things on her mind other than food: her children, her health, her life. During her distraction, the bread that she had put in the oven to toast begins to burn and it smells of smoke in the kitchen. She desperately pulls the pan out of the oven and begins to fan the bread, hoping that her husband in the living room does not smell it. Her husband enters the kitchen, smells the remnants of the smoke, and walks slowly over to her. She uses her body to shield the seared bread while realizing that the relief she just felt is gone. Her husband asks what happened and she opens her mouth to answer...when he smacks her across the face. Can you ever do anything right?! he yells. The children glance in through the open door, then scatter when they see their mom s wide eyed expression. The bruise begins to form already and the scar tissue around her broken heart opens back up again. This, unfortunately, is a reality for many women around the world, especially in the United States. They live in fear every day, wondering if today is the day that their spouse will end their lives. Others endure endless verbal abuse, killing their self esteem and their will to live. Domestic violenceis an epidemic that is on the rise around the world. We must come together and propose a solution to help women feel safe and secure in their homes and in their relationships. It was the conduct, ideas, and ideals of the knightly class of the Middle Ages. It became standardized and referred to as chivalry, a term derived from the French word chevalier, meaning knight. The code urged the knight to be brave, courageous, honorable, true to his word, and loyal to his feudal overlord, and to defend his Church. A knight was truthful, honest, capable, educated, physically fit, noble, sincere, and subservient to the king. A seriousviolation of these vows could result in a knight being classed as an undignified knight, which was the ultimate insult because of all the hard workthat was put into becoming a knight. For that, Perceval loves him mother dearly. Perceval may not have been the most sophisticated man around, however, when he did know how to do something he did it exceedingly well. He could not forget his love for his God though. God was a huge factor for knights and their beliefs. Perceval, the story relates, had lost his memory so totally that he no longer remembered God. (Story of the Grail, 457) Once Perceval found his way back to God, he was seen as the better knight because of his love for Him. Ultimately, Perceval is the one who is graced with being able to see the grail because he was such a simple, hardworking fellow. He did not abuse his strengths or downplay his weaknesses. The other side of this story revolves around Gawain, a knight and a stickler for the rules. He was a very knowledgeable knight; he knew much about courtly love and was the complete opposite of young Perceval. Gawain was a big, strong knight who was very loyal to King Arthur and served as one of his advisors. Even though Gawain was commendable, his lacked the spirituality that Perceval possessed. Section one is for identifying information of the student; while section two is where the assessor records the student s raw scores. Section three plots the results of the GATES in a clear illustration to show the student s performance against other gifted and talented students. Section four, five, and six all further detail the raw score of the student by converting the raw score into percentiles, etc. Once the scores are completed they can be assessed against the individual scales. Inter rater reliability measures the test s reliability and consistency across raters (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002). GATES does not provide any information regarding inter rater reliability. Validity Validity is the assessment of the test s informational construct, content, and criterion (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002). Despite the fact that GATES does not reference any giftedness theory or theory of support, content validity is confirmed for GATES since the test was developed based on literature reviews, critiques of existing rating scales, and academic and test construction experts of the field (Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, Morris, 2002, p. 330). A combination between federal guidelines on giftedness and a confirmatory item analysis is the basis of GATES creation. • 13. Greek Ancient Athens The city state of Athens is a part of the Greek Archaic cities. The history of Athens dates back to 3000 BCE, where the earliest evidence of occupation is documented, but the focus here is on Athens in the Archaic Period, which dates from 800 500 BCE. During this period there were a large variety of features that were detailed in the accounts of the city s society and history. The center of the city is dominated by two hills, the Pnyx and the Acropolis. Pnyx is where the Popular Assembly held its meetings. The Acropolis was the fortified center, then later became a religious sanctuary, the home of Athena, the patron goddess of the city, and a host of other deities. • 14. Annihilation In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness The bitterest contradiction and the deadliest conflicts of the world are carried on in every individual breast capable of feeling and passion (Raskin 116). Even those with the best intentions can create some of the deadliest atrocities as passion can take control over one s emotions. This emotional instability can be seen in Heart of Darknessas Joseph Conradillustrates how one s passion of saving others slowly turned into a madness that caused hundreds of fatalities. We wonder, what could cause a man, such as Kurtz, in Heart of Darkness, to enter another country with the best intentions, to become so violent and be the reason behind thousands of brutal and torturous killings without any resentment. It was the unchecked power instilled within Kurtz that led him to act on his horrific impulses. In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad claims one who has an unchecked power can fear losing it so eminently, that he or she is willing to engender atrocities that sustain the power the individual possess. In this case, Conrad suggests one way an individual reinforces his or her power on others is through annihilation. In Heart of Darkness, Conrad implies an individual develops a need to fulfill his or her role as the superior, through cultural values. During the South African wars, Europeans were granted the title as the superior group and praised higher than any other race (Reybrouck 109). To be made does not fit the context, and to be healed does not encompass the full extent of what Christ is doing to us, which is saving us from deserved eternal torment. Defining this word as to save is the best definition because it fully encompasses the salvation that Christ gives to people, while also correctly aligning itself to the intended meaning for the Ephesian audience. 2. For example, if I tell my audience that the Greek word ПѓОµПѓбїіПѓОјООЅОїО№ is a Perfect Participle Passive verb, some of them might think I am speaking in tongues. It is important to actually communicate with the audience, so in my application of the text, I would emphasize how salvation itself is a gift of God, as this is an important point that Paul makes. I would also tell them about how they are continually in the process of being saved, and show them from my own study, in an understandable way, how Christians continually work out their salvation. I would assure my congregation that their salvation is secure in Christ, while also affirming the meaning of Paul s words in a way that kindles their love for Christ. The Allied Forces alone lost almost 80,000 at the Battle of the Bulge. This casualty rate could have been much higher if Hitler would ve grasped the importance and value of supply and logistical support. Setting the Stage (The Battle) Arguably the most infamous battle during World War II, the Battle of the Bulge took place in the heavily wooded area of the Ardennes Forest region. The overall goal of this massive German counteroffensive was to break through the Western Front which consisted of both US and British forces. The primary objective behind Hitler s plan was too simply take back the initiative the Germans lost on beach of Normandy France. A few months prior to the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler had barely survived an assassination attempt. On 20 July 1944, one of Hitler s most trusted officers placed a bomb in a brief case and which he left underneath the table during a meeting (Gavin, J. (2003). The bomb unfortunately did not kill Hitler but it did represent the fact that, within Hitler s inner circle, there were disenfranchised high ranking German officers who wanted Hitler dead. 45 days before the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler was almost assassinated by one of his most trusted German Officers, an event which Allied Forces remained unaware of for a long time. Hitler s plan focused on the use of his most elite Panzer units with more than 1,500 tanks, 2,000 artillery guns, and an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 infantry soldiers (Gavin, J. (2003). The discussion about Jesus Christ was prevalent throughout the church for centuries and resulted in church councils that produced creeds for the whole church to stand upon as a foundation for Christological orthodoxy. Even with these orthodox creeds, the debate did not end there. The contemporary church, just like the patristic church, has found itself fighting to hold to an orthodox Christology. Just as it was in the patristic church the contemporary debate proceeds from a desire to be true to the teaching of the faith handed down from the apostles. Literary Devices Of Scene In Faking It By Michael Chabon Most authors who implement the literary device of scene in their writing do so to establish an entry point to the universal subject they are trying to portray. In literature, scene is an experience or moment that the author explains in great detail through various devices in order to perceive that time is slowed. In Faking It, Michael Chabondoes exactly this, utilizing a scene to introduce the main point of his chapter. In my essay, ________ , I made a conscience effort to mimic this literary device; however, failed to properly utilize it as an entry point. At the forefront of Faking It , Michael Chabon paints a descriptive scene in which he was attempting to install a towel rack in the bathroom. To start the chapter, Chabon dictated that the only reason he was granted this chore was because he knew, kind of, how to use an electric drill. He then provided a descriptive image of his efforts, explaining how he read the instruction while sagely stroking [his] whiskers...[looking] as if [he] knew what [he] was doing and then proceeded to [drop] one of the metal towel bars onto [his] right thumb . Chabon continually comments and hints at his inexperience and that he was forced to sustain the appearance of competence . • 33. Cosmopolitanism In Things Fall Apart And Kwame Anthony Achebe Throughout life, one is faced with choices between individualism and communitarianism. Such choices are reflected in many works of literature, including Chinua Achebe s novel Things Fall Apart and Kwame Anthony Appiah s Cosmopolitanism. The current report examines the first reading in the context of the second. Achebe s story is about the clash between tradition and change in an African village; Appiah s work advocates a unified perspective from which we are seen to be connected through basic humanism. The basic assumption of this author is that when one applies Appiah s idea of obligation to others in Cosmopolitanismto the character of Okonkwo in Achebe s Things Fall Apart(who is also the book s protagonist), the character changes in terms of how his fate or destiny is conveyed, as well as other aspects of his development. Although Okonkwo is a character of complexity, depth, and three dimensionality, one of his chief features is his resistance to change. This resistance is personal in nature, and Okonkwo then tries to impose this personal resistance on a greater community, rather than listening to it. By emphasizing the failure of the personal over the communal in Okonkwo s actions, Achebe draws sharp parallels between people helping each other and people driving each other towards entropy. According to Appiah, cosmopolitanism can be defined according to several of its divisions: One is the idea that we have obligations to others, obligations that stretch ... • 34. Princess Diana Eulogy Analysis On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a fatal car crash while in Paris. Her funeral was held on September 6, 1997, at Westminster Abbey in London, England. Thousands of people attended, while many more watched from their homes. A few of her family members spoke great things about her; however, the eulogy her brother wrote shocked the millions that were watching. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary a eulogy is a commendatory oration or writing especially in honor of one deceased (Merriam Webster Dictionary). This eulogy written for Princess Diana had many factors that set it apart from typical eulogies, but these aspects made it more effective. A typical eulogy consists of praise, happy memories, stories, and positive personality features of the one deceased. In opposition, this particular eulogy had a negative tone regarding the sadness in her life, as well as blaming the royal family and the paparazzi for her untimely passing. This eulogy used aspects that most speeches, essays, and other forms of writing use, including pathos, ethos, logos, parallelism, imagery, and negative comments toward her unfortunate loss of life. Earl used pathos to appeal to the audience s emotions. He used it to draw the audience in, and get their attention by talking about family. An example of pathos from the eulogy is, These were days I will always treasure. It was as if we had been transported back to our childhood when we spent such an enormous amount of time together ... Water Fly Lab Report Water Jet Target Characterization and Relation to Conservation of Linear Momentum Stephanie Coleman July 7, 2015 2 Abstract In order to visualize and conceptualize the affect of the contact angle on impact force, testing of four different shapes and comparing the results was done. Conclusions were drawn on the affects of the type of contact surface on the measured impact force. In analyzing these results, it was also be of interest to calculate the theoretical force using a derivation of equations and comparing them to the measured data. Doing so may allow for further understanding concerning the possible errors in calculations or possible mis assumptions being made. Helen Of Troy, By Margaret Atwood Unlike the many versions of Helen of Troy, in Margaret Atwood s The Penelopiad, she paints the infamous woman as imperfect, as a siren, a goddess, a murderer. By making the reader see Helen through Penelope s eyes, new layers are added to this character so often sought after. Helen and Penelope s dynamic adds a layer to not only The Penelopiad, but also to the male dominated Odyssey. These factors create a dynamic feminine force, and both women are in multiple ways a foil to one another. Many of Penelopes insecurities comes from her own view of herself and the way her experiences have shaped her. At the very beginning of the novel she says Hadn t I been faithful? Hadn t I waited, and waited, and waited, despite the temptation almost the compulsion to do otherwise? And what did I amount to, once the official version gained ground? An edifying legend. A stick used to beat other women with (Pg. 2, The Penelopiad). Penelope already has immense difficulty with herself and her identity. It is an interesting dichotomy. In one way Penelope wants to be like Helenbecause she doesn t have the status of a legendary faithful wife. However, she is forgetting that Helen does have her own legendary status, one that Penelope sometimes longs for, but is most likely unsatisfactory in its own way. • 39. A Brief Note On The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund ( Vvmf ) A war memorial is any physical object created, erected or installed to commemorate those involved in or affected by a war or conflict. These memorials are important because they act as historical touchstones. They link the past to the present and enable people to remember and respect the sacrifice of those who died, fought, participated or were affected by conflict. American casualties in Vietnam began in 1959 and ended with the evacuation of Saigon in 1975. Never officially designated a war, the Vietnam conflict became increasingly unpopular as casualties and news coverage of the fighting increased. Those people who served in Vietnam returned to an unsupportive nation and a media that emphasized the social problems of its veterans. There were few attempts to honor Vietnam veterans until 1978, when an insignificant and ambiguous plaque was placed behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ( Visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial ). One year later, Jan Scruggs (a wounded Vietnam veteran) founded the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), which sought private funds from both war supporters and opponents to build a memorial honoring the veterans but not the conflict. Honoring the men and women who served in the controversial Vietnam War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial chronologically lists the names of more than 58,000 Americans who gave their lives in service to their country ( Veterans Memorial Rededicated As 42 More Names Are Added ). • 41. Foreshadowing Examples In The Most Dangerous Game In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game, author Richard Connell expertly exploits foreshadowing and vivid imagery to emphasize danger and suspense. Many authors attempt to do this, but only a small few succeed. Everyone who has stayed up past their bedtime reading a book will tell you, they stayed awake because the book they were reading was filled with suspense. It is suspense that separates the great stories from the good stories. And The Most Dangerous Game is definately a great one. By using foreshadowing and utilizing his characters five senses, Connell keeps readers at the edge of their seats, eagerly waiting to find out what comes next. Foreshadowing is a vital ingredient to any suspenseful story. It hints at the idea that something is off kilter, without ever revealing exactly what that something is. This leaves readers with an uneasy feeling about the plot, but they can t quite figure out why. Because of that suspicious feeling, readers are left with a burning desire to find out what happens on the next page. Foreshadowing can be achieved many different ways, such as through eree names, unpleasant conversations, and odd occurrences. In one of the very first sentences in the story, readers can already observe the usages of foreshadowing. • 42. Genetic Engineering is a Process of Altering Genetic... INTRODUCTION: Genetic Engineering is a process where an organism s genetic material is altered by introducing a new DNA. It is where a gene is artificially removed from one organism and transmitted into another using biotechnology. Its goal is to provide with one or more traits that are not found in recipient organism, giving it the ability to perform a certain action, which the organism in nature cannot. DNA and proteins are very important aspects in order to understand genetic engineering. DNA is the genetic material that is found in every organism. It is located in the nucleus of every cell. It is made up of four complimentary bases, Adenine to Thymine and Guanine to Cytosine. These four bases help make the genetic code by providing information for the cell and essential proteins that an organism requires in order to survive. Some proteins act as enzymes that can help speed up the reaction. The genetic code is similar in every organism which benefits in the process of genetic engineering. When a gene is transmitted into the recipient organism through the means of transformation, the similarity of the code allows the recipient organism to express the specific trait. Some bacteria use transformation by acquiring the naked DNA from the environment and alter their genes by attaining new traits. Escherichia coli, also known as E.coli is a bacterium that lives in the intestine of warm blooded organisms that causes sickness and several diseases particularly in the weak ... An Extension Of The Activities Essay Research is a systematic, precise and rigorous inquiry or investigation that allows people to understand the nature of a problem or idea (Grossoehme, 2014; Stringer, 2014). All research can be visualised as an extension of the activities we engage in day by day, which requires one to move past the day to day understandings and engage in a more precise and rigorous description, observation or explanation of the problem or idea (Stringer, 2014). The general distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is that quantitative research uses empirical data in the form of numbers, while qualitative research uses empirical data that is not in the form of numbers, usually words, but there is much more to the research designs than their use of numerical data or not (Stringer, 2014; Punch, 2009). Qualitative research is associated with research conducted in the social world, as opposed to quantitative research which focuses on predicting and controlling phenomena on the physical world, and both have their own way of thinking and approaches to research and collecting their data (Stringer, 2014, Punch, 2009).
