Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) involve skills beyond basic recall of facts, such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. HOTS allow students to interpret information in new ways, draw alternative conclusions, and transfer skills to new situations. Developing HOTS is important for students to effectively apply their knowledge and think in more productive ways. Strategies for enhancing HOTS include explicitly teaching thinking concepts and skills, guiding students to categorize concepts, moving between concrete and abstract examples, and using questioning techniques.
