Trophic cascade is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the predators which are at the top of
the food chain or web is removed or introduced in the ecosystem. Their population directly
controls the population of species which is on next level and thus indirectly control population of
species of the subsequent trophic levels.
Such an event was seen in Yellowstone. Wolves that wer at the top of the food chain and web
were gone. Because of which the population of deer rose. These deer gaze off the entire forests
and vegestation without giving them chance to regenerate. Absence of vegetation wiped off
species that were dependent on forests and these vegetations. Not only this, since there were no
trees to hold the soil, the river overflowed and turned anywhere without control.
But after around 70 years these wolves were reintroduced in these forests. They killed deer and
controlled their population. Vegetation and the forests regrew not only because deer's population
were low now because of hunting. But there were some place that were avoided by the deer due
danger. Such area densed with forests soon. With the advent of forest various birds, and beavers
settled in. Beavers build dam in rivers which further welcomed fishes, ducks, reptiles etc.
These wolves killed the coyotes too which use to feed on mice and rabbits. Thus their population
too improved. With their improvement, population of foxes and carrions improved too.
Population of Scavangers improved too
And the most important of all, The course of river changed too as forests and vegetation holded
the soil tightly now on the river banks, so the river course became constant. Now more riffles
and pools formed which were good for animals.
