This review article discusses the principles and practices of sedation in the intensive care unit (ICU), emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying causes of distress such as anxiety, pain, and delirium in critically ill patients. It outlines the appropriate use of sedative agents, non-pharmacological interventions, and the need to monitor sedation levels to avoid over-sedation. Additionally, it highlights the significance of individualized treatment protocols based on patient characteristics and the etiology of distress.
