In Appreciation of the Rosh Hayeshiva Rabbi Yochanan Zweig, Shlita. My name is
Michael Kanoff. My wife, Sylvia, and I have been full time residents of Miami
Beach for the past fifteen years. The Rosh Yeshiva has had a tremendous
positive impact on our lives since our earliest arrival. About four decades ago, I
attended Yeshivas Ner Yisroel in Baltimore. For five years I had the privilege of
studying under the great Roshei Yeshivos and Mashgichim and hearing their
Torah insights . Although the Rosh Yeshiva had just recently left Ner Yisroel to
pursue his studies in Israel , his influence was still keenly felt and the legend of
his brilliance lingered. As someone who has been able to keep up my Torah
studies in the subsequent decades, and who has had the opportunity to hear
many contemporary Roshei Yeshiva , I am frequently asked "What makes Rabbi
Zweig so extraordinary" and to whom might one "compare the Rosh Yeshiva"? I
always reply that Rabbi Zweig doesn't fit into any of the models provided. He is
truly unique and extraordinary. He has synthesized all the finest features and
abilities of his Rabbeim and used them to establish his "baseline." That's where
he begins! In any category, be it in "Lomdus"(erudition), "machshava"
(philosophy), clarity in understanding the depths of the "Reshonim"and the
ability to articulate these concepts to even the novice in the room. The talmidim
and "veterans" are awestruck by the brilliance of the final product. When
questioned by a new applicant and his advisors as to what is the"primary" goal
of the Yeshiva, the response is immediate and unequivocal. Each student is
challenged to probe to the best of his ability and understanding of the text or
concept before him. If any other questions follow, they are all clearly moot. Rabbi
Zweig's dedication to the community is absolute! Both men and women who
attend the regular classes quickly become addicted to his tone and message. In
his capacity of personal family advisor and "Wiseman", his ability to ascertain
the core, cause and solution to issues before him he is peerless! Accessibility for
an urgent matter has no time constraints day or night! I guess you can tell by
now that Sylvia and I are truly appreciative to have the Rosh Yeshiva in our lives.
Our fervent wish for Rabbi and Rebbetzin Zweig is that they both be granted
many more happy and healthy years together to continue the Avodas HaKodesh
that they began here 40 years ago. Love Michael & Sylvia Kanoff and family

Dear Friends and fellow Talmidim, There are moments in time
that we discover we are missing something so significant, the
realization hits you hard, and it takes your breath away. I was 19
years old (30 years ago), and like many teens was learning in a
Yeshiva in Jerusalem. It was common for boys to brag about the
special skills and character of their Roshi Yeshivot. One
prominent yeshiva student, who today is a Rosh Yeshiva himself,
spoke often about Rav Yochanan Zweig and I have always
recalled his words of awe. I wondered if I would ever have the
chance to learn Torah by such a Gadol. Lag Baomer came that
year and many of us went to Meron to visit the Kever of Rabbi
Shimon Bar Yochai. As I walked up the hill I noticed a sign with
an arrow pointing around the hill to the grave of Hillel Hazaken
and his students. I decided to visit and daven at the kever of
Hillel first as he lived about 135 years prior to Rabbi Shimon. The
Talmud in tractate Succah 28a teaches us about the 80 students
of Hillel and how pious they were. Standing in the cave, I
counted 40 graves and I understood that many years later when
the students passed away, they specifically wanted to be buried
next to their Rebbe. I felt saddened by the realization that I don't
have such a Rebbe in my life. I felt the lack of a teacher that
would fill my mind with wisdom, my heart with understanding and
my life with clarity. A Rebbi that I would have such a deep
connection with, that it would continue on in the next world. At
the age of 33, I had the privilege of becoming a Rabbi in a
community in south Florida. As I made my way to Miami to meet
with the Rosh Yeshiva, I was filled with gratitude at the warm
reception I received. Later, I sat mesmerized as I listened to the
Rosh Yeshiva expound pearls of wisdom in his famous Torah
shiur and I knew my wish came true. I found my Rebbe, my
prayers were answered. Rav Yochanan is the Hillel of today as
he encompasses the many attributes of Hillel; kindness,
patience, and brilliance. Just like Hillel, the Rosh Yeshiva can
teach the most difficult complex Torah and simplify it in a way
that all his students can understand. My humble blessing is that
the Rosh Yeshiva should have Arechas Yamim V'shanim in good
health and strength so that he may continue to be a guiding light
to us all. With all my love, Your grateful talmid, Aaron Lankry

To Rabbi and Rebbetzin Zweig - Beginning to take the
Tuesday evening Gemara class in 1979 - even before we
moved to Miami Beach - enlarged the significance of our
moving here in a way that's hard to express, though we
know many other families share the same feeling. From
our wedding to all the major events of our lives, your
influence has guided us. Living here, learning and being
a part of the vibrant community you both have built has
truly elevated and inspired us. May all the souls you've
guided continue to grow and appreciate your inspiring
and compassionate example. Erica & Alan Rauzin
