How much of innovation is inspiration, and how much is hard work? If it’s mainly
the former, then management’s role is limited: Hire the right people, and get out of
their way. If it’s largely the latter, management must play a more vigorous role:
Establish the right roles and processes, set clear goals and relevant measures, and
review progress at every step. Peter Drucker, with the masterly subtlety that is his
trademark, comes down somewhere in the middle. Yes, he writes in this article,
innovation is real work, and it can and should be managed like any other corporate
function. But that doesn’t mean it’s the same as other business activities. Indeed,
innovation is the work of knowing rather than doing.
Drucker argues that most innovative business ideas come from methodically
analyzing seven areas of opportunity, some of which lie within particular
companies or industries and some of which lie in broader social or demographic
trends. Astute managers will ensure that their organizations maintain a clear focus
on all seven. But analysis will take you only so far. Once you’ve identified an
attractive opportunity, you still need a leap of imagination to arrive at the right
response—call it “functional inspiration.”

espite much discussion these days of the “entrepreneurial personality,”
few of the entrepreneurs with whom I have worked during the past 30
years had such personalities. But I have known many people—
salespeople, surgeons, journalists, scholars, even musicians—who did have them
without being the least bit entrepreneurial. What all the successful entrepreneurs I
have met have in common is not a certain kind of personality but a commitment to
the systematic practice of innovation.
Innovation is the specific function of entrepreneurship, whether in an existing
business, a public service institution, or a new venture started by a lone individual
in the family kitchen. It is the means by which the entrepreneur either creates new
wealth-producing resources or endows existing resources with enhanced potential
for creating wealth.
Today, much confusion exists about the proper definition of entrepreneurship.
Some observers use the term to refer to all small businesses; others, to all new
businesses. In practice, however, a great many well-established businesses engage
in highly successful entrepreneurship. The term, then, refers not to an enterprise’s
size or age but to a certain kind of activity. At the heart of that activity is
innovation: the effort to create purposeful, focused change in an enterprise’s
economic or social potential.

I graduated from college in 1973 and started work at IBM (IBM) shortly thereafter. At the time, no one talked of a “global economy.” The U.S. and other developed countries in Western Europe were dominant—accounting for about half of global gross domestic product. The term “emerging markets” didn’t exist (it wasn’t coined until 1981), primarily because those countries weren’t seen as “emerging.” They were poor, many of them saddled with ineffective leaders pursuing misguided policies and with large populations that were then viewed more as a burden than a benefit. They were the “debtor” nations. There was little reason to expect the status quo to change.
But it did. Perhaps the most compelling evidence of the change appeared in a Financial Times article published almost exactly 40 years after my graduation from Johns Hopkins University. The article took note of a historic development: “In 2013, for the first time … emerging economies will produce the majority of the world’s goods and services.” The article pointed out that the label “emerging” will become irrelevant as emerging markets’ share of world output rises to 55 percent by 2018.
I don’t think anyone in 1973 could have predicted this transformation. It certainly would have been unthinkable to me.
To those who knew me as a Baltimore native, who did not make any foreign trips with my parents, did not speak a foreign language, and stayed in the city for college and a first job, my advocacy for a new approach to global business might seem puzzling. Even within IBM, it was more than a decade before any of my work had an international dimension.
But growing up in Baltimore did give me an appreciation for the world beyond America’s
shores. The city has always been home to one of the busiest ports in the U.S. and a hub for international trade. I saw how the port helped give Baltimore—often thought of as a down-on-its-luck provincial city—energy and resilience.
Those impressions were reinforced years later when I moved to Tokyo in 1991. While it has little in common with “Charm City” (as Baltimore dubbed itself in the mid-1970s), I saw how trade and investment influenced Tokyo; it was becoming more open to people and products from beyond its shores.
My time in Baltimore and Tokyo, coupled with my global travels for IBM, shaped my thinking about the global era we’re in today. I came to see a commitment among political and business leaders in emerging markets to discard past practices in the interest of developing a large middle class. Equally important, I came to see that the best ideas could come from anywhere—and that they often came from outside traditional channels. Every company—indeed, every country—can fall prey to groupthink, which has a corrosive effect as it stifles the innovative impulse that’s so essential to progress.

Ask most people who invented the lightbulb, and they will promptly provide the wrong answer: Thomas Alva Edison. Truth is, the famous inventor's 1879 debut of his incandescent light trailed others by decades. So why does he get all the glory? Mostly because of what he did next, notes Andrew Hargadon, author of How Breakthroughs Happen: The Surprising Truth about How Companies Innovate. To get his creation to the masses, Edison and his team of engineers in Menlo Park, N.J., spent years building the entire electric system, from light sockets and safety fuses to generating facilities and the wiring network. Only then did the electric light flare into the innovation that lit the world.
In short, Edison beat all his predecessors at one crucial task: managing the whole process of innovation, from light-bulb moment to final product. Today that task is scarcely easier than it was 125 years ago. Sure, it's easy to get lucky once in a while. The real trick is doing it over and over again. "Managing innovation means cultivating an environment where lightning can strike twice," says Paul Saffo, research director at the think tank Institute for the Future. "It's extraordinarily difficult."
To hard-headed business people, innovation often seems as predictable as a rainbow and as manageable as a butterfly. Penicillin, Teflon, Post-it Notes -- they sprang from such accidents as moldy Petri dishes, a failed coolant, and a mediocre glue. It's no wonder so many executives throw up their hands. "Our approach has always been very simple, which is to try not to manage innovation," shrugs Silicon Valley venture capitalist Michael Moritz, a partner with Sequoia Capital. "We prefer to just let the market manage it."
Yet even in the Darwinian chaos of Silicon Valley, innovations are made, not born. The world's most innovative companies, from Procter & Gamble and Toyota Motor to Apple Computer and Edison's own General Electric, make their own luck. They plunge ahead on new ideas even though they know most will fail. "You have to go down blind alleys," says Jeffrey P. Bezos, founder and chief executive of pioneer online retailer Amazon.com Inc. "But every once in a while you go down an alley and it opens up into this huge, broad avenue. That makes all the blind alleys worthwhile."
"COMMODITY HELL"
Problem is, a lot of forces today conspire against innovative products getting to market. Small outfits that are often the most innovative get short shrift because buyers aren't sure they can deliver or even survive to keep supporting their products. And for large corporations, there's the "innovator's dilemma" coined by Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen. By catering to their best customers with increasingly advanced and more expensive products -- a seemingly sensible approach -- successful companies ignore or even discourage less profitable low-end products. Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall.
